HONORARY CHAMBER MEMBERSHIP FOR SKILLS SHOP Students learning retail skills through the initiative Schools Retail Group, who recently traded in a Christchurch retail unit, have been given Honorary Membership of Christchurch Chamber of Trade and Commerce. The students were presented with their certificate by President of the Chamber, Alastair Hoare. Mr Hoare, of Williams Thompson Solicitors, said: “We are pleased to be part of this initiative which provides

good retail experience for the students in all aspects of running a High Street shop. We would hope if they were to go on and open such a business they would also appreciate the benefits of membership and how a local Chamber of Trade supports local businesses. Jane Hopkins, Vocational Learning Manager at Twynham School, said: “The Schools Retail Group gives students a chance to put into practice what they learn at school giving them hands-on experience as they work towards their City and Guilds Level 2 in Retailing. This is equivalent to a Grade B at GCSE. In addition to the honorary membership, the Chamber of Trade has also sponsored awards for the students which were judged by their teachers during the project. One student was delegated the task of managing the store each day. The students also learnt how the Shoplink system works, a Chamber of Trade initiative using radios to connect shops with each other and the town’s CCTV control room. This was the last official duty for Mr Hoare who hands over the Presidency to Peter Watson-Lee, who is also a solicitor with Williams Thomson. The Vicepresidency is held by Julie Ratcliffe.

By Jasmine Mussell Recently I’ve had the opportunity to lay the first brick of our new building at Christchurch juniors, it’s an experience I never will forget… As a year 6 right down to a former year 3, soon Twynham, this would be one of my major memories here at this School. The

can look back and see where it is.

I won this by designing a brick, mine was showing the picture as a jigsaw, showing our trim trail and lessons. Saying “CJS where it all fits together”. I was awarded my brick (literally) in assembly by our head teacher Mr Adorian.

If you ever get a chance to lay a brick for your school I strongly recommend you do it. You’ll remember it forever, I will and I’m only in year 6. After all it was a really fun experience for all of us, one of the strangest things in year 6 yet… well maybe?

Beforehand, I was able to choose 6 friends to join me, Travis , Harry and Adam, also Abigail, Ishika and Laura. On site we had to wear jackets, helmets, goggles and I had to wear gloves. Once inside I had a long photo-shoot with a photographer. After, I continued to lay the actual brick. First, we put on some cement, I laid the brick firmly down and made sure it was level. It now has a mark so I

Business Column BAD NEWS, GOOD NEWS AND MIXED VIEWS Most people will have been saddened to hear news of Jarvis Radio on the High Street closing down. I spoke to Keith Julie Jarvis who told me their reasons, mainly changes to bank support and the impact of internet shopping. However there is a bit of good news – though some of this is a little contentious. Firstly, let’s welcome, Heartizan’s delicatessen and, shortly, Indulge Yourself on High Street, Taste of Dorset in Church Street and a new wedding shop on Bargates. In Highcliffe there’s a new cafe and Accolades, a windows / conservatories business. Further promising news is that three big brands have made applications to move into the town. Penton Citroen wants to move into the Revvo site at Somerford and the former Health Centre may become a 68-room Travelodge. The good thing about the Travelodge is that it won’t have a cafe or restaurant, so those staying overnight will need to use local businesses for food and drink, also it’s a different kind of accommodation to local guest houses and hotels. The third application will split opinion. It is from Pizza Express to refit the south side of the arcade on the High Street. This building is undoubtedly a blot on the town centre landscape, so improvement would be welcomed, however there will be groans at yet another food outlet. Will it be bad news for our local independent Italian restaurants, La Mamma and Pinocchios, or could this be a new draw to people who don’t come to Christchurch? Additionally, it would hopefully tidy that awful corner. This kind of application always poses a dilemma for the decision makers. Perhaps the encouraging thing is that these companies have the confidence to invest in Christchurch, even in the current economic climate. Julie Ratcliffe

Success spurs Farley & Thompson to sponsor a second year of Priory House Art Exhibition As a result of the success of the 2010 event, Bournemouth stockbrokers Farley & Thompson are again sponsoring Christchurch Arts Guild in the staging of their 2011 annual open Art exhibitions at Priory House, Christchurch between the 6th and 20st August. The Preview/Opening event is on Saturday 6th August. While markets for both parties are prone to fluctuation this is a very significant and welcome measure of support to the Guilds standing in the East Dorset, New Forest and West Hampshire areas and a reflection of confidence shown by F&T in introducing the guild’s work to its client base and a wider audience.

Admission is only 30p and the exhibition is open daily to the public – there is art for everyone and visitors can enter a competition to win one of the exhibits. Senior Partner Colin Chalkley-Maber remarks “We are delighted to support the Christchurch Arts Guild as sponsors for the second time this summer. The standard of work on view last year was very impressive and prompted F&T to purchase for the business with further sales going to other colleagues who attended. This year we will also be presenting a Farley & Thompson award for the painting we feel stands out on merit.”

and active artists to produce some exceptional work,” New website – www. christchurchartsguild.org Examples of the work both Colin Chalkley-Maber and Bob Mackinnon refer to can be seen on the Guild’s impressive new website. Managed by committee member Doug Hart, artist’s individual galleries have already produced sales and the ‘hit’ rate is climbing rapidly. All the Guilds news is entered there including a recent impromptu visit by celebrity Peter Andre to our Furzey Gardens exhibition.

Chairman of the guild, Bob Mackinnon adds,” If success breeds success we are very pleased that this is reflected in Farley & Thompson’s renewed sponsorship for 2011. All activities of the guild have gone up a notch over the last year with the enthusiasm of both demonstrators

More health walks in Christchurch to help people get fitter

People in Christchurch keen to get healthier by walking have more options to help them with the publication of five new walks which have been added to Christchurch Council’s ‘Get Walking’ pack. The pack was originally launched in 2006 with nine walks covering some of the best parts of the Borough from Stanpit Marsh to St Catherine’s Hill. Many of the walks were adopted by the Christchurch Strollers, a group started by the Community Partnership in 2009 when 11 walk leaders were trained. Now walk leader Ted Slade has come up with routes for the five new walks covering Highcliffe Castle, Christchurch Quay and Druitt Gardens, the mill stream and Christchurch Quay, Mudeford Wood and Mudeford Quay and has worked with the Council to produce new maps. The walks are ideal for those who would like to become more active or perhaps lack the knowledge about where to walk locally. The walks are graded to show level of difficulty, are short and circular and avoid crossing busy roads wherever possible. Each map shows the walk distance, the suggested time the walk will take along with the walk terrain. There is also a key showing the symbols for facilities along the walk, such as parking, toilets or refreshments. Becky Beaumont, Open Spaces & Countryside Officer at the Council, said: “Health walks are a great way of promoting healthy lifestyles through activity and we have been looking for ways to further encourage walking. We were therefore delighted when Ted Slade came forward with a number of new routes. “We hope residents and visitors will take advantage of

the free walk pack to get fitter and enjoy the wonderful scenery that we have to offer in Christchurch at the same time.” The ‘Get Walking’ pack of 14 health walk maps is available from the Information Centre, the Civic Offices, Two Riversmeet Leisure Centre, the libraries and other centres throughout the Borough. The walks can also be downloaded from the website at www.dorsetforyou.com/ healthwalksinchristchurch.

From A Mudeford Garden by Tom Murphy From the end of the garden comes the bee’s murmur. There is something therapeutic about its drone. It marks the boundary this afternoon in summer Between the mischievous world and my home. My garden is Eden, an intimate paradise Where I imbibe the warm elixir of the sun. I raise my glass, clink the ice, bon appetite. Rosemary on the breeze tells me the lamb is done. Tomorrow I’ll leave Mudeford, plunge into the sea of traffic and commerce. Sunday is for me.

It’s the time of year where most people book a holiday or take a trip away somewhere nice. At the beginning of July, I was given an amazing opportunity to go to Morocco for a Geography trip Brogan with Brockenhurst College, to help with my A-Levels. The word ‘experience’ is an understatement, and I’m amazed at how much we fitted into six days! The first day was a chance to see the vibrant city of Marrakesh. With an early 4am flight (thanks Easyjet) I had only managed a few hours sleep. Therefore, the market stalls and souks where enough to make anyone feel overwhelmed! I took a quick snap of a man with a snake on the ground and he came chasing after me with a box, demanding for my camera! I’ve never been so frightened! Arriving at our hotel in Imlil in the High Atlas Mountains, the heat really hit me. I’m such a baby in anything over 30 degrees, I even had a cooling mist spray and a massive hat to protect me. Shame it got completely squished in my suitcase and I looked like a farmer for the rest of the week! The hiking we did up Mount Toubkal was tiring and strenuous. I moaned about the heat and the steep hills but the view from the top was breathtaking. At the end of the week, I got heat stroke (told you I was a pansy in hot weather) and was shoved on a Mule, a cross between a donkey and a horse. Bearing in mind I had never ridden a horse before, that in itself was an experience. I was clinging onto this Mule, with heat stroke, a massive squished hat; huge walking boots and sweat patches from head to toe. I even tried to take some pictures until my Mule made a huge groan. I was probably too big for it anyway! But all in all, Morocco was an experience. I learnt that I cope better in cold weather rather than hot, hats definitely do not suit me and that I really don’t like Lentils, especially in my soup everyday! Enjoy your holidays; I’m sure you’ll have plenty of Kodak moments and memories to laugh about. Love, Brogan x ChristchurchEYE

Three local charities are better off to the tune of more than £5,000 each thanks to fundraising by Cllr Nick Geary during his year as Mayor of Christchurch.

a wide range of activities during the school holidays, not only keeping them interested and enhancing their education, but also allowing parents to know that their children are in safe environments.

Cllr Geary’s nominated charities for the year were Christchurch Activities for Young People (CAYP), First Opportunities and Portfield School. As more than £16,500 was raised, each of them has now been presented with a cheque for £5,520.

First Opportunities is a unique therapy playgroup for young children with special needs. Experienced key-workers use play to stimulate the child’s physical and learning development, with each child being individually assessed.

Cllr Geary said: “I chose these charities as I believe it is extremely important to support children and young people as well as those organisations who work with children with special needs. “It gave me a lot of pleasure to raise the funds during my Mayoral year and it now gives me a lot of pleasure to hand the money to the charities for them to use for the benefit of local children and young people.” CAYP provides opportunities for school children to engage in

Portfield School is an independent day and boarding school operated by The Wessex Autistic Society for more than 50 children and young people on the autism spectrum. On receiving the cheque for Portfield School, Andrew Thomas, the Director of School Services, said: “We have children here who have a range of exceptional needs. A gift like this will make a significant difference very quickly. Every autistic child is individual and this will allow us to be creative to fit the individual needs. We’re very grateful.”

Time turned back at Christchurch Fiesta Fayre Time was turned back at the Red House Museum in Christchurch when Christchurch Community Partnership held its Fiesta Fayre there. The museum reverted to its workhouse origins as local historian Mike Andrews took on the guise of a workhouse master and stallholders and helpers at the Fayre dressed in the style of the mid-nineteenth century. Children were invited to come dressed as street urchins and 11-year-old Dan Mason was chosen by the workhouse master as ‘Red House Street Urchin of 2011’ and presented with a prize of 20 guineas (a currency previously unknown to him).

During the Fayre, the Mayor of Christchurch, Cllr Sue Spittle, unveiled a plaque for Poets Corner marking the spiritual home of the Community Partnership’s Poetry in Design Award. Winning entries for this award will be posted at the Poets Corner giving everyone visiting the museum a chance to read them. The theme for this year’s competition is the Red House Museum. Stella Jackson-Smith, chairman of the Community Partnership’s Culture & Learning Action Group, who helped organise the Fayre, said: “This was a very successful event and one which we will be able to build upon next year for the special celebrations which will be taking place for the Diamond Jubilee and the Cultural Olympiad.

“I would like to thank everyone who got involved and entered into the spirit by dressing up. We had a steady stream of visitors to the Fayre throughout the day.”

The Constable’s House Throughout 2011 these Christchurch Eye Local History articles are featuring a few of the historic landmarks that can be seen on a stroll along Convent Walk, which celebrated its centenary in June. The Constable’s House is part of the castle complex along with the Keep. It is not known when the first castle was built, but a wooden fort may have been erected within months of the Norman Conquest in 1066. Alternatively, it may not have been constructed until after Richard de Redvers was granted the Manor of Christchurch, along with the Isle of Wight and numerous other manors, by King Henry I shortly after he seized the crown in 1100. Nevertheless, the stone-built Constable’s House, with its ground floor storeroom, first floor hall and solar (a partitioned private chamber), and perhaps a roof of Devon slate, was not constructed until about 1160. This means that it may have been commissioned by Richard’s son, Baldwin, the 1st Earl of Devon, who was a prominent supporter of Empress Matilda’s claim for the crown during the civil war with King Stephen. The Gesta Stephani, a biography of King Stephen written during his lifetime, records that towards the end of the war Baldwin’s castle at Christchurch was captured ‘by stealth’ and only recovered through the courageous action of the townspeople. Did this incident, which occurred in about 1148, inspire Baldwin to construct a more secure stronghold? Perhaps - but because he died in 1155 he may never have seen the building completed. The de Redvers were Lords of the Manor for over a hundred and fifty years and, although there is no evidence that they ever resided in Christchurch for long, their castle would have provided a convenient over-night stop on the sea-journey between their power-base in Devon and their castle at Carisbrooke on the Isle of Wight. During their absences the castle would be governed by a constable. The term is derived from the Latin comes stabali (‘Count of the Stables’), for he was originally responsible for looking after his commander’s horses. The medieval constable was primarily responsible for the security of his lord’s castle but, like a modern police constable, his duties also extended to local law and order. It also became his duty to ensure that the local people possessed weapons and armour appropriate

to their rank - an obligation made compulsory by the Assize of Arms in 1252 to create a medieval ‘Home Guard’. The names of some of the 13th century constables of Christchurch are recorded in the Christchurch Priory Cartulary, where Jordan de Candale, William Lyon, Roger de Gardino, and others are witnesses to charters drawn up by the Lord of the Manor. The Constable’s House probably resembled an office more than a dwelling house. Nevertheless, it saw various improvements over the years. A garderobe (toilet) tower was constructed over the millstream to provide the luxury of en suite facilities, and a doorway was knocked through the eastern wall to create a new entrance to the ground floor storeroom. This water-gate may have been added by Baldwin de Redvers, the 7th Earl of Devon, for shortly after becoming Lord of the Manor in 1257 he drew up a charter to ensure that his boats had free access along the millstream to deliver supplies to his castle.
