I’m very sorry to tell you that this month, after three years working with us, Julie Ratcliffe, our business columnist will be writing her last column. Julie is also withdrawing from the Christchurch Chamber of Trade & Commerce and all the hard work that came with her role there in order to concentrate on writing children’s novels. Julie’s first novel, ‘The Thirteenth Box’, was the first in her Smugglers’ Town Mysteries series. Set in 18th-century England, it is action-packed and full of colourful characters within a historically correct setting, using actual places around the Christchurch & Highcliffe area. This book was read and enjoyed by every member of our household so is suitable for all ages and makes a fantastic birthday present for anyone. Although we are very sad to see Julie go, I’m pleased that she is one step closer to the next book, The Face of Sam, which I believe should be available nearer to Christmas, how fantastic! I’m sure you’ll join me in wishing her every success with her new career. I would like to say a huge thank you to Julie for her contribution over the last three years and wish her all the best for the future. Thank you Julie. The Thirteenth Box is available to buy now from Bookends, Christchurch Information Centre, The Olde Eight Bells shop, Avon Beach Shop, Highcliffe Castle & Priory Bookshop. Also available via www.highsailspublications.co.uk and on Amazon Kindle!

Business Column
We now offer gardening services!
JUST ONE MORE THING... After three years this is, sadly, my final business column for the Christchurch and Highcliffe Eye magazines having decided to concentrate on my children’s novels. It has been an interesting time and I’ve thoroughly enjoyed reporting the challenges facing businesses throughout the Borough.
Julie
My very first column was back in August 2010. I wrote about how high streets evolve, of new businesses starting up, how Christchurch High Street has bucked the trend in this recession, and I’ve urged people to shop locally on the parades and streets where businesses vie for local patronage. Other column topics have been the importance of passing trade, local transport systems, Business Improvement Districts (BIDs), apprenticeships and youth employment, the value of tourism, using festivals and events for business benefit and, of course, parking charges.
Questioning the issues will be Christchurch Chamber of Trade and Commerce and I hope that businesses of all kinds get behind it. Having a strong business voice is vital and recently the Chamber has been making changes and focussing its work. Proactive business people on an active Chamber can make a big difference - especially if it works alongside the local authority rather than at loggerheads. Finally, it would be great if everybody joined the Chamber in getting behind the Totally Locally Christchurch campaign. Success here would go a long way in ensuring ours is a thriving town.

There are still testing times ahead. Both Christchurch and Dorset County Councils will be no doubt wrestling with budgets following further cuts to government grants. I sincerely hope they choose not to target parking again, especially Dorset’s truly awful idea of meters on the High Street. Every survey undertaken, such as the Portas review and those by the Federation of Small Businesses, shows that parking charges are a real threat to the vitality of towns.

Following Creedy Path
W
hen the redeveloped Druitt Gardens were officially opened in June 2012 the ceremony included a celebratory cycle ride along the pathway that runs between Sopers Lane and Wick Lane. This pathway has long been known as Creedy Path, and its transformation into a shared footpath and cycleway with a ‘resin bonded gravel’ surface is just its most recent incarnation. Before the Druitt Gardens were redeveloped, Creedy Path was generally considered to be a length of crazy paving running near the back gardens of Wickfield Avenue. However, that quirky stone path dated to only the 1950s. Old maps show that the footpath had previously run in an almost perfectly straight line through the Gardens. Although some of the trees have been felled, a remnant avenue delineating this earlier route can still just be discerned (Photo: The former route of Creedy Path, leading between the waste-bin and signpost, as viewed from near the Wick Lane end of the footpath). Because this former route ran close to the line of the medieval town wall it is popularly believed that Creedy Path may have once been part of a track running outside the town between the Priory and the Leper Hospital of St Mary Magdalen (which was situated on the far side of what is now the Recreation Ground) – effectively a medieval bypass! A colourful but dubious local story even suggests that Creedy Path is so-named because canons walking along it could be heard reciting the Christian creed. In reality, the true antiquity of the footpath is unknown, and it seems more likely that its name is derived from the land it bordered, which before the Wickfield Avenue estate was built in the mid-20th century was an 11 acre field system called Creedy. This land is recorded as ‘Crydie’ in the early 14th century. Nevertheless, the origin and meaning of this name remains uncertain. Do you have any theories?
6
After Wimborne-born solicitor James Druitt built his grand new house (now Christchurch Library) on the High Street in 1844 he gradually extended the back garden until it included Creedy Path. He maintained the public footpath and later planted saplings along it to make it ‘more agreeable’. After James Druitt’s death in 1904 there was a real risk that Creedy Path and part of the garden ground would be lost to urban development, with sale particulars specifically noting that ‘forming Creedy Footpath into a 36ft road’ would permit access to a large number of building plots! Fortunately, this fate was averted by James Druitt’s son Herbert, who bought the land. In 1938, shortly before the Wickfield Avenue estate was built, Herbert’s sister Charlotte purchased an additional narrow strip of land at the edge of Creedy Field. In time the footpath moved sideways onto this strip, creating the curious kink in the pathway that still exists. When a public consultation regarding the proposed redevelopment of Druitt Gardens was conducted in 2009 one of the most contentious issues was whether or not the crazy paving Creedy Path should be retained or replaced, with opinion equally divided. Nevertheless, in December 2011 the slabs were lifted, trees were felled, and the work to create a shared footpath and cycleway was begun, heralding a new phase in the history of this apparently ancient pathway. With acknowledgement to research undertaken by Sue Newman and Bev Miller.
The preservation of the garden by Herbert and Charlotte Druitt is the reason that the town now possesses a unique woodland environment just off the High Street. For more information about the history of the formal Druitt Gardens in the early 20th century refer to ‘An Edwardian Garden - From The Diaries of Herbert Druitt’ by the late Olive J Samuel, a founder member of the Christchurch Local History Society. An English Mum
A
few days ago I found myself edging towards the grumblier side of a moan as I lamented that the English Mum family probably wouldn’t be going away on holiday this year. Just then, I looked out of the car window Rachel and noticed I was driving past the beach — you know, that beach, the one with seven whole miles of golden sands, dozens of awards and within walking/cycling distance of Christchurch...
It’s sometimes so easy to forget that we live in a holiday destination. We can pass by the sea without a second glance; drive into the forest without noticing the trees; a field of cows or horses is largely ignored, and we even become oblivious to the seagulls (unless they happen to leave an unwelcome message on the car or steal your ice cream).

We are so fortunate to live in an area full of natural beauty and also with an abundance of recreational facilities available for people of all ages – a sports centre, swimming pool, tennis courts, riding stables, shooting, fishing, archery, boating, golf and even crazy golf, all within a few minutes of the town! And all that is before I have even mentioned Christchurch Regatta & Carnival, Stompin’ on the Quomps, the New Forest Show and of course the amazing free Air Festival by the sea (which I absolutely LOVE but will not go on about after forcing trains on you all last month!). We even have Play Rangers who help entertain the kids for free in the parks in the summer months! So, I am going to quit whinging and start planning some days out instead, while counting my blessings that we live in such a varied, beautiful and amazing part of the world. Hope you have a great summer, however you spend it. An English Mum x ChristchurchEYE

Wellbeing Matters THE MIND/BODY CONNECTION
I
f you were offered an opportunity to use your head to help yourself be healthier and reduce medication, would you welcome such an attractive and empowering offer? Research in neuroscience (Psycho-Neuro Immunology) continues to show strong links in mind and body functioning. It is widely recognised that illness is not just physical; it is hugely influenced by our emotional and mental wellbeing. The immune system is strong when emotional stress is low.
Lisa
Many forward thinking GPs are now embracing these ideas. A GP who has successfully referred a number of patients to me, once commented how patients do not realise that their thoughts may be creating or exacerbating their condition. Perhaps you reach for medication to ease your symptoms? Whilst this can be successful in curtailing symptoms, the body’s voice is silenced. Drugs take the symptoms away but do not address any root cause of emotional imbalance. To rely solely on help that is outside of us is to ignore the elephant in the room. Physical disorders such as IBS, high blood pressure, frequent colds, headaches and sleeping problems are often signs of emotional stress. Your body is communicating to you that the way you are thinking or living your life is in some way out of balance. It’s the tap on the shoulder wanting your attention. It’s the only way our body can communicate with you – but do you listen?

Osmington White Horse Circular Walk Area Weymouth Distance 4 miles Difficulty Easy/Medium Access Restrictions? No An excellent 4 mile walk providing excellent views over Weymouth and Portland and the option to visit the famous ‘King George III on Horseback’ carving on the Osmington hillside Follow the track, go through the gate (1/3 mile) and start to ascend towards the Ridgeway. At the top turn left, signposted Bincombe 2 ½, White Horse ¼ mile.
How to get there: - Grid Reference 705836. On the way to Weymouth, about 1 mile after Osmington, turn right for Sutton Poyntz. Park on the road near or opposite The Springhead pub alongside the small river runs through the village. Walk details:- Proceed up the road past the pub and turn right up the lane at Cob Cottage. You will soon pass through 2 gates about 50 metres apart. Go straight on across the field for about 500 metres to a stile in the corner, on again to a gate (300 metres) and then on to the stile in the hedge (300 metres).
You are now on the Inland Ridgeway, go straight on to the metal gate. After ¼ mile, you will see a Trig point on your left. At the left fork option, carry straight and at the next left sign, turn left. You will now have some derelict buildings in the field to your right and tumuli to your left. Follow the fence to the gate and carry on along the ridge. After 1/3 mile, you will find a telegraph pole in the right hedge. The path swings left, following the line of the telegraph poles which leads onto a track. Follow this to the bottom. At the bottom, turn right through a gate and continue along the track to a gate with the stream to your left. After 100 metres you will come out onto the road on the opposite side of the small river where you started. Jurassic Jaunts © Jurassic Jaunts AP 2009
Proceed for another 300 metres to a gate-size gap in the hedge. Continue to follow the Hardy Way signs and head for the Purbeck Stone house ahead of you. At the pedestrian gate opposite the house (1/3 mile), turn left toward the White Horse and Bincombe.

An English Mum’s Guide to a Successful Picnic
W
ith lots of exciting outdoor events taking place in and around Christchurch this month, I thought I would share my guide to preparing a perfect picnic:
1. Get up early, start making sandwiches like they’re going out of fashion, then hide some. About 5 minutes after you’ve finished, at least one of your kids will tell you that they’ve now made other plans to go out, and will disappear, munching some of the no longer needed ‘wiches. About three minutes after this, the same child will reappear to tell you that they are now coming, and also bringing their friend with them, so could you please make them lunch too. Of course, you are now prepared for this and can produce extra sarnies with a flourish and a smug grin. (Until they tell you that little Jimmy doesn’t like cheese or tuna or ham or Marmite or jam and is allergic to nuts. At this point, I find that a bag of frozen sausage rolls left over from Christmas will do the trick, unless he’s also vegetarian, in which case he gets bread and butter. Or banned.) 2. I like to bag everyone’s sandwiches individually, with their name on. Then when they’re gone they’re gone, and no one can have more than their fair share! (I know, I’m mean). 3. Do not under any circumstances wear perfume or take anything fizzy or jammy or chocolatey, unless you want wasp fest. I wouldn’t bother with citrus candles either, unless you want a burn mark on your blanket/foot/child. 4. If your freezer is big enough to chuck small bottles of water in, these act as great coolers for the bag, and are nice and cold to drink as they start to melt. They also soothe any stings (and burns, if you ignored my candle advice). 5. Chop up sticks of carrots/celery/cucumber etc. Your kids will be trapped in the middle of nowhere and will be ravenous - an ideal opportunity to get them to eat the illusive vegetable. 6. Take loo roll and a plastic bag. I’ve been there without either, and it wasn’t pretty. 7. Don’t forget the talc —it’s brilliant for removing welded on sand and getting feet dry. 8. A blanket, towels, sun lotion, wet wipes, tissues, plasters, bandages, string (it has many uses) ear plugs, a ball, headache tablets (probably best to take a couple before you set off) and a good book finish off my check list. Oh, and a map if you’re going to the forest, though I find it more fun to drive around until we get lost and come across a nice little spot that we haven’t found before. (Getting home is then also an adventure). Have fun! And, as an Aussie friend recently said to me, don’t forget to slip, slop, slap and slide (slip on a t shirt, slop on some sun lotion, slap on a hat and slide on your shades)! An English Mum x

treat, The perfect summer afternoon cup g sit back and enjoy with a warmin of tea. Ingredients 225g self-raising flour, plus extra for dusting 50g butter 4 tbsp golden caster sugar Ÿ tsp cinnamon 1 apple, peeled, cored and diced 125ml milk, plus extra for brushing Clotted cream and fresh or defrosted blackberry compote (see goes well with), to serve Preparation method Heat oven to 220C/200C fan/gas 7. Tip flour into a large bowl with butter then rub in using fingers until the mix looks like fine crumbs. Stir in sugar and cinnamon, add apple and give everything a mix. Pour in milk and stir it in quickly, then fold dough over 2-3 times until it’s a little smoother. Tip onto a lightly floured surface; pat into a round about 3cm deep. Dip a 6cm cutter into some flour then cut out scones, flouring the cutter each time. Squash offcuts lightly back into a round and repeat until all dough is used up. Brush tops with a little milk then place on to a lightly floured baking sheet and bake for 18-20 mins until risen and golden. Allow to cool on the tray. To serve, split scones then spread with a dollop of clotted cream and a spoonful of blackberry compote.
