welcome

to the Highcliffe Eye Community Magazine

editor’s letter

I’m very sorry to tell you that this month, after three years working with us, Julie Ratcliffe, our business columnist will be writing her last column. Julie is also withdrawing from the Christchurch Chamber of Trade & Commerce and all the hard work that came with her role there in order to concentrate on writing children’s novels. Julie’s first novel, ‘The Thirteenth Box’, was the first in her Smugglers’ Town Mysteries series. Set in 18th-century England, it is action-packed and full of colourful characters within a historically correct setting, using actual places around the Christchurch & Highcliffe area. This book was read and enjoyed by every member of our household so is suitable for all ages and makes a fantastic birthday present for anyone. Although we are very sad to see Julie go, I’m pleased that she is one step closer to the next book, The Face of Sam, which I believe should be available nearer to Christmas, how fantastic! I’m sure you’ll join me in wishing her every success with her new career. I would like to say a huge thank you to Julie for her contribution over the last three years and wish her all the best for the future. Thank you Julie. The Thirteenth Box is available to buy now from Bookends, Christchurch Information Centre, The Olde Eight Bells shop, Avon Beach Shop, Highcliffe Castle & Priory Bookshop. Also available via www.highsailspublications.co.uk and on Amazon Kindle!

Who will make sure those you care about are OK? Carers Required – We are looking for people to provide care to the elderly in their homes.

We know the most important things in life are our loved ones but it is not always possible to be near them. This obviously causes anxiety as you are not always sure that they are safe, secure, warm and managing their daily lives. We can provide daily or weekly support that will help alleviate your concerns.

Business Column

JUST ONE MORE THING... After three years this is, sadly, my final business column for the Christchurch and Highcliffe Eye magazines having decided to concentrate on my children’s novels. It has been an interesting time and I’ve thoroughly enjoyed reporting the challenges facing businesses throughout the Borough.

Julie

My very first column was back in August 2010. I wrote about how high streets evolve, of new businesses starting up, how Christchurch High Street has bucked the trend in this recession, and I’ve urged people to shop locally on the parades and streets where businesses vie for local patronage. Other column topics have been the importance of passing trade, local transport systems, Business Improvement Districts (BIDs), apprenticeships and youth employment, the value of tourism, using festivals and events for business benefit and, of course, parking charges. There are still testing times ahead. Both Christchurch and Dorset County Councils will be no doubt wrestling with budgets following further cuts to government grants. I sincerely hope they choose not to target parking again, especially Dorset’s truly awful idea of meters on the High Street. Every survey undertaken, such as the Portas review and those by the Federation of Small Businesses, shows that parking charges are a real threat to the vitality of towns. Questioning the issues will be Christchurch Chamber of Trade and Commerce and I hope that businesses of all kinds get behind it. Having a strong business voice is vital and recently the Chamber has been making changes and focussing its work. Proactive business people on an active Chamber can make a big difference - especially if it works alongside the local authority rather than at loggerheads. Finally, it would be great if everybody joined the Chamber in getting behind the Totally Locally Christchurch campaign. Success here would go a long way in ensuring ours is a thriving town.

local history

Country Houses CLIFF CLOSE AND BEACON LODGE Cliff Close Cliff Close was a small property between the Castle and Beacon Lodge. The grounds extended from Lymington Road to the cliff edge. It was built for Colonel Francis Adams, D.S.O., an officer in the Royal Deccan Horse, who died in 1945. It later became a hotel, ‘The Cliff Close Hotel’ run by Mr and Mrs Holden. Later it became the Galleon Public House but is now called the Hinton Oak. Beacon Lodge Beacon Lodge was an estate bounded by the Lymington Road and the cliff edge. It was at one time a beacon place where a fire would be kindled to act as a signal of either an invasion or of rejoicing, as at the time of Queen Victoria’s Jubilee in 1887. The fire would be allowed to burn brightly at night but would be covered during the day so as to emit dense smoke. Beacon Lodge was originally called East Highcliffe. Little is known of the origins of the house but it appears to have been continually leased. Amongst the tenants were:General and Mrs Orde. Bishop Bloomfield, who was Bishop of London 1828-1856. The Hon. Grantley Berkley and his wife. Grantley Berkely was the fifth son of Earl Berkeley and a very colourful character. He fought a duel with the critic of his first book, slightly wounding him. He was the first

person to propose that the ladies should be allowed into the gallery of the House of Commons. He was a keen and active sportsman. At Highcliffe he taught Lord Stuart de Rothesay the art of being a country gentleman, teaching him shooting, fishing and the habits of birds, beasts and poachers. Sir William Goshen rented the Lodge in 1914. Sir William had been British Ambassador in Germany. Sir William Gordon, Q.C., a Scotsman Major Cadbury and his family of three boys. Residents recall the boys firing the cannon which stood near the cliff edge, frightening those who lived near. Cricket was played every day in August on the beautiful ground on the estate. It was in a very picturesque setting with a fresh green turf surrounded by trees. Residents took deckchairs and picnics to spend leisurely afternoons watching the play. The Co-operative Society purchased it as a holiday hostel for their staff. It has now been demolished and the Beacon Lodge estate built.

We would like to thank Sheila D. Herringshaw for kindly giving us permission to include this article extracted from her book titled ‘A Portrait of Highcliffe’, published by Natula Publications. This book and many others written on local history in Christchurch & Highcliffe can be purchased online from www.natula.co.uk and also at Highcliffe Castle, Avon Beach shop and Bookends.

An English Mum

A

few days ago I found myself edging towards the grumblier side of a moan as I lamented that the English Mum family probably wouldn’t be going away on holiday this year. Just then, I looked out of the car window Rachel and noticed I was driving past the beach — you know, that beach, the one with seven whole miles of golden sands, dozens of awards and within walking/cycling distance of Christchurch...

S

It’s sometimes so easy to forget that we live in a holiday destination. We can pass by the sea without a second glance; drive into the forest without noticing the trees; a field of cows or horses is largely ignored, and we even become oblivious to the seagulls (unless they happen to leave an unwelcome message on the car or steal your ice cream). We are so fortunate to live in an area full of natural beauty and also with an abundance of recreational facilities available for people of all ages – a sports centre, swimming pool, tennis courts, riding stables, shooting, fishing, archery, boating, golf and even crazy golf, all within a few minutes of the town! And all that is before I have even mentioned Christchurch Regatta & Carnival, Stompin’ on the Quomps, the New Forest Show and of course the amazing free Air Festival by the sea (which I absolutely LOVE but will not go on about after forcing trains on you all last month!). We even have Play Rangers who help entertain the kids for free in the parks in the summer months! So, I am going to quit whinging and start planning some days out instead, while counting my blessings that we live in such a varied, beautiful and amazing part of the world. Hope you have a great summer, however you spend it.

Garden View

Designer Plots It is estimated that just 3% of the UK population employ a professional garden designer, with most people opting to design their own outdoor space, or adapt one they may have inherited. The first decision to make when starting a plan is whether to make it look ‘designed’ or not. By this I mean do you like a structured garden with big sweeping curves and strong lines, formality and symmetry, or do you prefer a more informal space that looks like it ‘just happened’, almost by mistake, (these are much harder to achieve as you are often trying to recreate something nature does best). There was an industry debate recently which explored the idea of modern gardens being ‘over designed’. Just like in clothing fashion, there’s a revival of a certain era every so often, and it’s the same with design outdoors. Once up on a time, formal terraces were all the rage with pretty-coloured bedding schemes and clipped hedging. Then, decades later, these were dug up and replaced with sweeping natural ‘landscapes’ , where trees and lakes were carefully located to make them appear as though they had always been there. Which is right? Well, neither, it’s personal taste and as long as it fits with the house style and surrounding landscape, I think you should do

26 HighcliffeEYE

what makes you happy. After all, that’s what gardens are for, to be enjoyed. Once you’ve decided on a style, take some measurements of the boundaries, starting with the house. Use circles, curves, squares and rectangles to make some nice shapes on the plan, then choose a material to fill them in with. Usually the largest space will be the lawn, then patio or deck, and pathways, then fill the gaps with plants. Next month is the perfect time to plant, so we’ll be looking at planting plans in detail then. In 2008/2009, laws were introduced regarding things like changing levels in your garden, such as only being allowed to raise decking by 30cm above ground level, any higher would require a protective rail or balustrade; and also the consideration of sustainable ways to manage water, and where possible retaining it within the garden. So, before planning any major works to your garden, check with your local planning department that you don’t need permission Lee Bestall

esigning Top tips for d your garden:

Keep things simple and don’t over complicate the basic design layout Use pergolas to add height and shade Consider hedges instead of fencing to add structure Make space for at least one small tree Consider the maintenance of the new garden - decking and gravel are cheap, but require more maintenance in the long term
