welcome

editor’s letter

to the Christchurch Eye Community Magazine

Having recently enjoyed watching the drama series ‘Mr. Selfridge’ on ITV, I was interested to hear that the real Mr Selfridge had strong connections with the local area, namely Highcliffe Castle and Hengistbury Head. Turn to page 14 to learn of these exciting connections, he and his wife are even buried here in Highcliffe. New this month, you’ll find our “Jurassic Jaunts’ page for those that enjoy a stroll, each month will see planned walks along and nearby the South Coast. Thank you to www.jurassicjaunts.co.uk for kindly letting us use their information each month. Look out for ‘Fiver Fest Fortnight’ happening from Saturday 20th April around many places in Christchurch. The Fiver Fest is being organized by Totally Locally Christchurch, volunteers, both traders and residents that want to make Christchurch an even better place to live. The shop local campaign aims to remind everyone the importance of using our local, independent traders to help keep money within the local economy. Lookout for flyers being handed out around town nearer the time of the Fiver Fest or pop on over to their website to find many offers www. totallylocallychristchurch.co.uk We’re always looking for interesting local articles to keep the magazine as interesting and relevant as possible so if you have something you think our readers will be interested in do please email us at info@localeyemags.co.uk Oh, I nearly forgot to tell you…our recipe this month (page 35) is the Hummingbird Bakery’s Traditional brownie; this has to be the most amazing Brownie recipe ever. Enjoy! I certainly did!

Business Awards Awards Celebrating Local Business Excellence

Dewey’s Greengrocers win March’s Business Award for Christchurch!

C

ongratulations to Mike Dewy at M J Dewey Greengrocers on Barrack Road. Many of you, our readers, had posted and emailed in your nominations for a local business that you felt deserved recognition for their high standard of service and your comments certainly portrayed that of our local greengrocer. Here are just a few of your comments…… ‘I was fed up with the flavourless fruit and veg from supermarkets that didn’t last five minutes and was imported from all over the world. Then I found Deweys. They are local, great value, helpful and open on Sundays. I go there several times a week as it is en route home and parking is usually pretty easy outside. I try different things if they dont have what I had planned to buy. The produce is fresh, tasty, English where possible and lasts for much longer than Supermarket produces. So glad I found them.’ Laura of West Christchurch ‘Helpful and friendly service. They will go that extra mile to try and get a fruit or vegetable that they don’t stock as a norm.’ Jenny of Christchurch Have you received a particurlay good service from a local business recently? Then please do tell us about it! Here at Local Eye Magazines, we want to spread good news! To nominate your favourite business, either pop along to our website and tell us why or alternatively, if you do not have internet access, you can write to us then post or pop your nomination through our letterbox if you are passing: Business Award nominations, Local Eye Magazines, 20 Manor Road, Christchurch BH23 1LU. Are You Going to Trinity Fair?

T

rinity Fair is one of Christchurch’s earliest recorded annual events. A medieval fair was essentially a large market that attracted traders selling luxury produce and goods not readily available at the regular weekly market – much like the modern Christchurch Food & Wine Festival Market held annually in early May (Photo). It is not known when the Trinity Fair began, but the earliest known reference to it appears in a mid-12th century French manuscript written by a retired Abbot of Tournai named Hermann. He recorded an account of a fund-raising expedition through southern England undertaken in 1113 by nine canons from the French cathedral city of Laon. Hermann wrote that, after leaving Winchester, the canons came to Christchurch, ‘where a fair is held every year on the octave of Pentecost’. Hermann does not name the fair, but this description indicates that it was held on the eighth day (inclusive) after Pentecost/Whitsun on what is now known as Trinity Sunday. This was the holy day – or ‘holiday’ - of the town’s Holy Trinity minster church. Hermann recorded that the Fair lasted only one day. However, less than a century later it had grown to five days, lasting from the eve of Trinity Sunday until the following Wednesday. It seems likely that the growth in popularity and profitability of Trinity Fair had been assisted by the construction of Ranulf Flambard’s grand new church (which Hermann says was still in progress when the canons from Laon visited) and the foundation of the Augustinian priory in about 1150. The establishment of Christchurch Priory was supported by the Lord of the Manor, Baldwin de Redvers, who confirmed that it was entitled to receive a tithe (10%) of the tolls from the Trinity Fair. Some 50 years later, Baldwin’s by then elderly

6

son and the current Lord of the Manor, William de Redvers, decreed that an additional 1½ marks (20 shillings - over £1,000 today) should be donated annually to Christchurch Priory from the revenue of Trinity Fair. William’s wife Mabel had recently died, and this donation was to ensure that each anniversary of her death was celebrated by the Canons with particular devotion - with one third to be allocated to provide a meal for forty poor people of the town. Perhaps as a consequence of a prohibition on Sunday trading introduced by King Henry VI in 1448, Trinity Fair was later recorded as being held on Corpus Christi, the Thursday following Trinity Sunday. A mid-19th century description of the Fair says horses and cattle were penned in Bargates, with pigs at the north end of the High Street. Boxing stalls and other side-shows were pitched outside what is now the Library, and a pleasure fair continued along the remainder of the High Street, sometimes extending into Castle Street. However, in 1871 the passing of The Fairs Act permitted the abolition of ‘unnecessary’ fairs and, despite a campaign of opposition by aggrieved townsfolk, the Mayor and burgesses of Christchurch (by that time the owners) successfully applied to have both of the town’s ancient fairs ended. Local auctioneers Abbot & Son endeavoured to continue a livestock market on Trinity Thursday, at first in a field on Barrack Road and later in Fairfield off Bargates, but this could not prevent over 700 years of annual fairs in Christchurch from slipping into history.

For more information about the town’s Trinity Fair, St Faith’s Fair, and weekly market, refer to ‘The Medieval Markets & Fairs of Christchurch’ by David Eels, available locally at £3.50. David is a well-respected local historian and expert on the de Redvers dynasty. He is also a founder member of The Christchurch Antiquarians, a local society dedicated to studying the history and archaeology of Christchurch. All the proceeds from the sale of this booklet are devoted to funding the society. ChristchurchEYE

CHAMBER – A CHAMPION OF THE BOROUGH

I

was asked recently what the Chamber of Trade does for the town as a whole. Chambers of Trade are organisations set up by businesses to speak up for and to lobby on their behalf. Chambers work Julie on initiatives that support businesses and promote their localities to the outside world.

Have you been avoiding the dentist?

Christchurch Chamber of Trade and Commerce is not a large organisation and does not have a great deal of money. Often it kick starts and supports initiatives until they run on their own. So, how does it help businesses and the town as a whole? Here are examples of its work. The town’s CCTV scheme was set up as a joint initiative between the Chamber, Council and Police; the Christchurch Food Festival was initiated by the Chamber and run by businesses; the Christmas Festival began as a Chamber initiative for a late night shopping event; the Chamber runs the Shoplink Radio Scheme, an offshoot of the CCTV scheme, to help prevent business crime; the Parking Refund Scheme, where businesses offer to refund 1 hour’s parking charge for a set spend, is Chamber run. The Chamber holds business events and produces publications, such as the Christchurch Shopping and Services Guide and Christchurch Business Guide to promote business. Recent lobbying has included the £1 for 2 hours parking campaign and support for the Totally Locally initiative. Without a successful business base, towns become run down. Shops and industrial units lie empty, jobs disappear, property prices drop. So a healthy local economy is vital to the wellbeing of a town and its residents. A pro-active Chamber of Trade is an essential part of this. Christchurch works best when it works together. The Food Festival is testament to that fact and local Councils and Chambers should work in partnership to create conditions in which businesses can thrive. www.xchtrade.co.uk

AFC Burton - Free Advertising Opportunities for local businesses AFC Burton are currently looking for help from local businesses to form mutually beneficial relationships. The club currently boasts 4 adult teams playing in both the Saturday and Sunday Bournemouth Leagues, and has over 90 playing members ranging from 16 to 38 years old. The Perils of Gardening This is the time of year I see many patients with gardening related injuries. Many patients report that they had planned to go out in the garden to do a little bit of gentle pruning. Often this has developed into a much longer stretch of hard graft, as they noticed other bits and pieces that needed doing – and before they knew it, several hours have passed by. Digging and pruning, weeding and planting, mowing and raking are all hard work and can often result in an aching low back or painful neck and shoulders. After a long winter of indoors inactivity it may take your body a few weeks to re-accustom itself to the physical demands of gardening – squatting and twisting and lifting. The following tips may prevent your needing the services of an osteopath. •

Always warm up before you start your gardening with some gentle limbering up and stretching exercises.

Pay attention to your technique when lifting objects such as heavy planters or bags of compost. Bend your knees, and keep the item close to your body. Keep your back as vertical as possible and use your leg muscles to lift, rather than straining your back.

Try to vary your activities and frequently change your position, especially if you are kneeling, or squatting, or bending over.

Investing in some good quality long-handled tools will help minimise the amount of bending over and stooping you need to do.

If back pain is a persistent problem for you, then consider creating a raised-bed garden

If you are feeling stiff and sore after gardening, or for any other reason, then do think about getting in touch with me to make an appointment for assessment and treatment.

Mr Selfridge in Highcliffe By Jenny Wigman When ‘Mr Selfridge’ came to our television screens in January little did I realise how Christchurch could in fact be linked with him. Harry Selfridge was an American born in Wisconsin on 11 January 1856. He was brought up by his mother, his father did not return to them after the Civil War in 1865 and his two brothers died around this time also. With this hard start in life it didn’t deter him and he became quite the young entrepreneur. At the age of 20 he was taken on by a very successful store in Chicago one of the partners being Marshall Field. Marshall Field was a pioneer of department store shopping, someone who influenced him greatly. On a trip to London in 1906 he discovered that London’s shopping experience was sorely lacking and decided to open his own department store, ‘Selfridges’. On 15 March 1909 Selfridges opened to the public. His ideal was to embrace everyone from all walks of life so all could enjoy this new shopping experience. Mr Selfridge was very keen on mixing theatre with shopping and made the department store a destination. In 1916 he decided to have a residence away from the hustle and bustle of London and rented a property in Dorset, this property was Highcliffe Castle. Sharing his time between London and

Highcliffe he rented the property until 1922, the magnificence of Highcliffe Castle obviously appealing to Mr Selfridge’s showman persona. In 1919 Selfridge commissioned the architect Philip Tilden to design his very own castle. He had purchased land at Hengistbury Head; the plan was so vast it was due to cost a fortune. Philip Tilden set to work and some of these beautiful drawings can be found online at the Royal Institute of British Architects picture library http://www.ribapix.com. The plan involved four miles or ramparts with towers, and both a small and large castle. The large castle was to include a Gothic hall, a 300-ft tower, a theatre, a Hall of Mirrors copied from Versailles, a winter garden, a covered lake, long corridors and galleries for pictures, tapestries and other objet d’art, and at least 250 suites of rooms for guests. Unfortunately when his wife died in 1918 his spending became reckless, also in 1929 the Great Depression began. In 1930 he sold the land at Hengistbury Head to Bournemouth Borough Council with a covenant advising that the land was never to be built on. This may have been unfortunate for him as his dream castle was never built but indeed fortunate for us as the land remains unspoilt for us to enjoy. In 1939, at the age of 83, in debt and more or less penniless he was made to retire from Selfridges. After this he led a more simple life and died in 1947 at the age of 91 in Putney. As his wife, Rosalie, was buried in St. Marks Churchyard in Highcliffe, so he too was buried beside her in a very simple grave, his life turning full circle from a humble beginning to a humble ending. Excerpts taken from countrylife.co.uk.

ESTABLISHED 25 YEARS

ue to some strange collision between the moon, the Gregorian calendar and the number of rabbits it takes to change a light bulb, Easter is irritatingly early this year. Whereas we can usually enjoy a week or Rachel two of holiday, pump our kids full of chocolate and lovingly send them off into the care of apprehensive teachers, this year we’re stuck with them. Two whole weeks of choccy-hyper ‘I’m bored’-ness.

If you’re fed up of cowering in the corner with your hands over your head, you could always take the little darlings to the local library. I recently took a peek in Christchurch branch, which is nearing the end of a full refurbishment and extension. It is with some relief that I can finally go in there without needing a disguise due to a certain ‘incident’ which occurred when my kids were quite small. At the time I also owned a new puppy. Not knowing quite how to deal with the barking, the biting and the nasty deposits on the floor (and that was just the kids) I trotted along to the library and borrowed two books. One was called ‘How to Tame your Toddler’ and the other was a book on dog training. It was with some embarrassment that I returned the remains of the books two weeks later; the Toddler Taming book having been eaten by the puppy, and the dog training book having been scribbled in by the toddler (much to the amusement of the librarians and the detriment of my wallet). Anyway, the library now looks all fresh and lovely, and they usually put on free events for the kids during the holidays. (Make sure you check out the lovely ceiling skylights if you go in). Alternatively you could always leave the kids at home with an unsuspecting baby sitter and go to the library for some peace of your own! Have a very Happy Easter! An English Mum x

Lateral Thinking The Zorganian Republic has some very strange customs. Couples only wish to have female children as only females can inherit the family’s wealth, so if they have a male child they keep having more children until they have a girl. If they have a girl, they stop having children. What is the ratio of girls to boys in Zorgania? Answer on Page 41

Life at Durlston Court Prep School.... Life as a pupil at Durlston Court Prep School is certainly a busy one. The school prides itself in enabling all of its pupils to fulfil their potential, whether academically, in sport, music or the arts; the opportunities available certainly reflect this commitment. Shortly after 8.30am pupils gather in Chapel as the day begins. At the same time Pre-Prep children are welcomed with enthusiasm to their classes. One PrePrep parent commented that the “Pre-Prep is such a harmonious and nurturing environment which makes our son feel relaxed and confident.” It is evident that this approach, combined with small class sizes, really enables the children to thrive here. From Year 3 pupils are introduced to specialist teaching. Jonathan (aged 12) appreciates this: “Every week we have a lesson in the art room. I love being in a place with so many materials and such inspiration.” Durlston has a well-established and impressive sporting reputation and many of the pupils express their enjoyment of their daily sports coaching. Many of the children choose to stay at school until 5.30pm to take part in the endless list of clubs on offer including, Choir, Swimming and Pottery. 11 year old Kira enjoys Play Club. “Although I only have a small part in Midsummer Night’s Dream, the thrill of being on stage is exhilarating,” she said. The academic success speaks for itself, with an impressive record of Senior School Scholarships and entrance exam success. Listening to the pupils, it is clear that children truly enjoy all that life as a Durlstonian has to offer.

Are you currently faced with the prospect of Most families wish to ensure that their relative can stay in the chosen care home for the rest of their lives as well as safeguarding as much of the existing capital as possible. With careful planning it may be such a way that care fees can be paid future or what might happen if the money runs out. Norris and Fisher will review the clients circumstances fully and provide a summary of the options.

Care Destiny Plan At Norris and Fisher we have long held the belief that people should have time to plan effectively for their care future, even if they might never need it. That’s why we offer a simple report which is able to give this type of forward planning a real structure. As you might know, placing a relative in a care home is nothing short of an absolute crisis and time is not usually an available commodity. But, we believe that younger citizens of around 65+ should embrace the luxury of time and invest in our services so that we can help them create their very own unique “Care Destiny Report. Attacking the situation head-on as it were, and drafting a personal Care Destiny plan, should prevent younger family members having to: second-guess what type of care “Mum would have wanted, spend ages searching for details about income, expenses and savings and locate and visit numerous care homes trying to find a suitable one. Establishing a Care Destiny Plan, gives people the chance to explore exactly what would happen (personally & financially) if they needed care. The report addresses the following essential issues: Background & Personal Information , Objectives, Care Choices & Costs, Care Fees Payment Calculation, Current Legislation, Future Legislation, Powers of Attorney, Inheritance Tax Liability & Planning, Wills & Funerals If you would like a complimentary copy of our Ultimate Care Fees Planning Handbook or you think you might benefit from a no obligation discussion about planning ahead for care, please call us on 01202 474447 or contact: Norris and Fisher Independent Financial Services Ltd 54 The Grove, Christchurch, Dorset, BH23 2HB

Under her leadership, the choir- now numbering more than forty children aged from 4 – 15 years- rose to dizzy heights, exceeding Alison’s own expectations. Their meteoric rise to national status culminated in their amazing win as BBC Children’s Choir of the Year in 2010. The choir is based at The Regent Centre, Christchurch where weekly Wednesday rehearsals concentrate on technique; building repertoire, and creating lifetime opportunities to all local children. Since their win in 2010 the choir has continued to build on its formidable reputation- competing successfully at the Llangollen Music Festival. Their local, regional and national contributions are always sell out events. Two opportunities have arisen since the formation of the Training choir in 2011 and the Chamber choir in 2012. Alison is, once again, giving the children of Dorset and Hampshire the opportunity to take part in the feeder Training choir. Entry is by a simple audition (but the children don’t know they’re being auditioned) and are given additional opportunities to receive high quality 1-1 tuition for a nominal sum. The latest audition dates are 27th March 17th April and 24th April. Parents are asked to contact Alison via the choir website newforestchildrenschoir.co.uk The Chamber choir is also seeking to extend its membership. Older children; young adults and adults are welcome to join a rehearsal and to audition after this. Again, please contact via the website to register your interest. In addition to their regular concerts, the choirs intend to visit New York in the spring of 2014 as they have been invited to perform at Carnegie Hall.

HOW HEALTHY IS THE LOCAL PROPERTY MARKET? 2012 Locally we saw a modest overall rise in transactions with the mid and higher end demand often underpinned by out of area ‘family’ buyers frequently with schooling considerations and second home purchasers primarily from London and the South East. Our Knightsbridge office having played an important role for us in relation to the latter group. First time buyers remained thin on the ground with high deposit requirements and lack of financial options dampening appetite. A number of properties, including small new build developments that we felt would appeal to first time buyers, were ultimately bought by investors seeking to ‘park’ their money in bricks and mortar and achieve yields of 4½% or more, plus potential capital appreciation, rather than historically low interest on savings accounts. As a result of our increased sales to investors and an ever-increasing volume of rental/tenant enquiries we set up Richard Godsell Lettings department headed by Claire Goddard to provide both full management and tenant find services to both existing and new clients. 2013 The landscape in the first quarter has seen some changes with a significant increase in first time buyer demand, stimulated by the Government Funding for Lending Scheme. Our firm’s own independent mortgage advisor, James Youlten, confirms that he is now able to source a far wider range of competitive finance options for first time buyers, those trading up and investors alike than was the case last year and new players seem to be continuing to enter the market. Elsewhere, whilst the flat/apartment market remains challenging, family homes and retirement bungalows continue to attract strong demand and for those properties whose pricing is consistent with the market conditions a buyer can normally be found within a reasonable period of time. That said challenges remain in areas marginally above the Stamp Duty threshold, particularly at the £250K and £500K levels; whilst at the upper end of the spectrum there remains a psychological resistance to breaking through the £1m barrier unless there are exceptional attributes. The Hike 2 By Karlina St Vincent Windblown smoke from granite chimneys Joins the enveloping mist. No colour in the cloaked landscape. The silver tarn is rain pitted to gunmetal. Rivulets wash the lavender slate roofs, Splash onto speckled stone paths. Bedraggled sheep in stinking wool Huddle under dripping elms. Engorged streams gurgle, rush down hill Over moss, rocks and Harts tongue fern. Walkers, head down to the wind, plod on, Water chills through anorak shoulders, Boots squelch in boggy grass, Miles more to cover in the soaking grey.
