Not long until Christmas now folks! Have you done all your Christmas shopping yet? If not, please consider popping into Christchurch & Highcliffe. Not only are there a wide variety of shops but also many unusual gift ideas, some even made by local artisans. I bought a few stocking fillers at the recent Fiver Fest in Christchurch which took me into shops I hadn’t been in for a while and was pleasantly surprised by the wide choice our local shops have to offer. There’s also free parking in the week leading up to Christmas (dates unconfirmed at time of going to press, we will announce on our facebook page when confirmed). Shopping in Christchurch & Highcliffe is a totally different experience compared with your larger shopping malls with great customer service and just knowing that my little bit makes a huge difference to our local community brings me that feel good factor. If we don’t continue to use our local High Street for shopping we will quite simply lose them, so come on, do your bit and give yourself some of that feel good factor too. Wishing you all a very happy Christmas!

hich Christchurch business has 700,000 customers a year and has recently spent £50 million on improving its facilities but works in an industry that has such tight profit margins that it needs its customer’s parking fees to help balance its books? To confuse you further, despite Peter being a major Christchurch employer and being based in the borough, it uses the name of Bournemouth in its title because of its international standing? A recent visit to Bournemouth Airport by the Christchurch Chamber of Trade and Commerce gave a fascinating insight into one of our borough’s most interesting businesses. Its development over the years is engrossing enough on its own. The airport started in 1941 as a wartime airstrip for Spitfires, after the war for a period it was UK’s only inter-continental airport (until the opening of Heathrow) and it was also the hub for significant aircraft building. Just as engrossing is its current business model. The air flight and the tough bargaining tactics of the low cost airlines makes the running of a regional airport immensely challenging.
recent recession in international DTIME AD_66x94MM_QUARTER PAGE_CHRISTCHURCH_AND_HIGHCLIFFE 11/06/2012 EYE_MAGAZINE.indd 17:58 1
However, it is a challenge that the management and staff in Christchurch rise to with great spirit. The senior management will happily assist the less able-bodied from the car parks, and when no flights are due, the security officers will help with the cleaning. A true team spirit pervades the whole running of the enterprise. The diversity of its functions with its air traffic control, massive fire engines and the air club, air pilot training centres and large hangers and businesses on the commercial side of the airport, all makes this a unique Christchurch business. Of course, for us locals, it also provides a superbly convenient gateway to international holidays. It’s a local business that deserves our support.

Buying Real vs. Artificial Christmas Trees Real Christmas Trees: The Best Choice Each Christmastime, shoppers find themselves confronted with a choice: celebrate with a fresh, real tree, or one that is artificial plastic or aluminum. What most people don’t realize is that the best choice has always been the traditional and natural choice - a Real Christmas Tree. Real Christmas Trees Benefit the Environment
Fresh cut Christmas trees available 1st December onwards
While they’re growing, Real Christmas Trees support life by absorbing carbon dioxide and other gases and emitting fresh oxygen. The farms that grow Christmas Trees stabilize soil, protect water supplies and provide refuge for wildlife while creating scenic green belts.

Real Christmas Trees are grown on farms just like any other agricultural crop. To ensure a constant supply, Christmas Tree growers plant one to three new seedlings for every tree they harvest. On the other hand, artificial trees are a petroleum-based product manufactured primarily in Chinese factories. The average family uses an artificial tree for only six to nine years before throwing it away, where it will remain in a landfill for centuries after disposal. Real Christmas Trees Are Recyclable Real Christmas Trees are biodegradable, which means they can be easily reused or recycled for mulch and other purposes.

t’s that time of year again, when previously sane friends suddenly succumb to OCD — Organised Christmas Disorder. You know the ones — they have the cake made in October, the presents bought (and wrapped) Rachel in November and all the Christmas cards written and sent by the 1st of December. This is most definitely not me. I know for a fact that the cake will be bought, not made, the presents will arrive on the last delivery day Amazon has available, and will finally be wrapped up by around 2am on Christmas Morning. Oh, and don’t expect a card. I’m fairly certain that most of my long-suffering friends would have thought I’d died, if it were not for the reprieve of being able to post a message on Facebook sometime in-between stuffing the turkey and peeling the sprouts.
Christmas Day is always a little on the frantic side in the English Mum household! According to Delia and Nigella, I should be able to prepare copious quantities of mouth watering dishes, presented on an impeccably dressed table, whilst wafting around the kitchen looking like I’ve just spent the day at the spa. The reality is I’ll be lucky if I make it out of my dressing gown by lunchtime and my make-up will be hastily scrawled on in between shouting at kids to get dressed, attempting to dig out the dining table (usually buried under heaps of post), and remembering to rest the turkey. It’s chaotic, frantic, sometimes fraught, but by the time the turkey sandwiches are starting to curl and the dips have formed a light skin, the family usually agrees that it was a great day. As for me, I envy the turkey — a rest would be very welcome sometime around lunch time on Christmas Day! However you spend your day I hope you have a very blessed and Happy Christmas. An English Mum :)

Asda is coming to Christchurch in 2015
T
he former MOD site at Bailey Drive, West Christchurch will become home to a brand new Asda supermarket, which plans to open its doors in 2015. Awarded Britain’s lowest priced supermarket for the 16th year in a row, Asda was also voted Britain’s favourite supermarket by a panel of consumers at this year’s The Grocer Gold Awards. Supporting the growing number of residents living in West Christchurch, the new supermarket will form part of a larger redevelopment at Bailey Drive. Bailey Drive is situated behind the retail park on Barrack Road and this new store will offer its customers 350 car parking spaces, two electric car charging points and a café overlooking the river. Approval for the site’s redevelopment was given by Christchurch Borough Council in June 2013. The finer details for the store are to be presented to Christchurch Borough Council’s Planning Committee in the coming weeks. Quantum Group, owners and developers of the land, announced the news on Friday 22nd November. CEO David Hines said “It is great news for Christchurch and its residents. Asda are very excited to be setting up a new supermarket in the town and playing a part in the growth of Christchurch’s economy”. You can find out more about Asda’s new store and what is going on at Bailey Drive by visiting the website www.baileydrive.co.uk. ADVERTORIAL

The Face of Sam
Another Smugglers ’ Town Mystery from J.A.Ratcliffe AT GRE T! GIF
Christchurch, Hampshire, 1781 - A ship is wrecked, a girl is found two miles away staring at a carving in the church, she is hiding a secret and refuses to talk. As word spreads about the girl and the wreck strangers appear in town, including smugglers from Kent on a journey of revenge. Soon three friends are drawn together in a mystery that can only be solved by The Face of Sam. Available from: www.highsailspublications.co.uk and the following local outlets:

£1million for the development of Christchurch
A
brand new ‘not-for-profit’ enterprise launched this month, focused on the continual development of Christchurch town and its community. The Christchurch Foundation Trust was the idea of employees at Quantum Group, developers of the former MOD site at Bailey Drive. Last week the site owner and developer announced that Asda is planning to open a new store at Bailey Drive in 2015. CEO David Hines, of Quantum Group, said “This is a very exciting time for Christchurch. To celebrate the news, Quantum Group has decided to seed The Christchurch Foundation Trust with £1million from the profits of our deal with Asda. This is a fantastic way to kick start the trust, which was set up by employees of our business.” The trust will be working with residents and businesses to generate ideas and create new economic, social and environmental projects that have a positive impact on the town. Simon Hammond, Community and Engagement Director of Quantum Group and acting Chairman of the trust, said “I have spent a number of months speaking and listening to the Christchurch community. Many of the local residents are passionate about Christchurch and have expressed how keen they are to play an active part in its continual development. Therefore, to be actively involved in forming The Christchurch Foundation Trust is a great privilege and opportunity for me.“ Simon’s role for the coming months is to work with other employees within the Quantum Group – who are giving up their time for free – to bring the trust to fruition. One of the first priorities is to set up an independent board to run, and manage, The Christchurch Foundation Trust. “I will be searching for this new board in early 2014,” says
Simon “so that we can create some strategic direction and really engage with the Christchurch community on what their thoughts and ideas are.” Not only will the scheme use the £1million, promised by Quantum Group, but will also be working to identify new and additional sources of funds, which will further enhance and continue the work of the trust. Simon elaborates on how he and the board might do this. “Part of the role of the new board will be to identify ways of generating even more funds to help Christchurch. We are already researching ways of generating donations, funding partners and ‘match funding’ opportunities from other organisations”. The development at Bailey Drive was agreed by Christchurch Borough Council in June 2013. The site will offer, in addition to the new Asda supermarket, 25 affordable houses and a range of new community benefits, including an outdoor fitness area, a new ferry point with access into Christchurch and a children’s play area. Quantum Group is also planning to build a modern interpretation of the Bailey bridge, acknowledging its creator Donald Bailey, OBE, who designed and developed the renowned World War II invention. Over the coming months the trust will be speaking to charities, schools, businesses, residents and other organisations on how it can help them and the town. If you are interested in finding out further information about The Christchurch Foundation Trust, you can visit their website which offers details about how to get involved, how to apply and some of the opportunities the trust is currently exploring. You can find it at www.christchurchfoundation.co.uk.

Surviving Christmas Surviving a modern day Christmas can be challenge enough for humans, but just imagine how difficult it is if you’re a plant. You’ve been reluctantly forced to flower, grown in a light controlled polytunnel and you’ve been force fed with growth stunting hormones to ensure you’re not too straggly when flowering on Mrs Cratchit’s table …. and here’s me feeling sorry for the turkey! It seems such a shame that after all the effort, you go and kill the poor thing after just one week of taking custody. This year will be different though, because whether giving or receiving a houseplant this festive yuletide, help is at hand with my top tips for keeping them alive (until New Year at least!). •
Avoid placing plants in a draughty location such as windowsills, or near to a frequently opened door, (they won’t appreciate the large fluctuations in temperature)
•
Avoid hotspots, such as in front of or above a radiator or fire
•
Water plants by plunging them into a bowl of tepid (not cold) water, and then allowing the water to fully drain out from the pot before returning to its location
•
Azaleas like humid conditions, so stand these on a tray of gravel filled with water, (but ensure plants are not sat in water)
•
Create a ‘plant area’ where groups of plants can be stood together, this will create more humidity
•
Avoid direct sunshine
•
Ensure the compost never dries out or is too saturated, water little and often
•
Remove faded flowers to prevent disease and to promote flowering
And finally, don’t get emotionally attached, think of flowering houseplants as a medium term bunch of flowers or a Christmas decoration, and after flowering if they look a little jaded, return them to the compost heap in the sky - I don’t think there’s any worse house plant tragedy than a straggly Poinsettia in July with three stunted yellow leaves. Poinsettias are popular because they look wonderful, but here’s a little word of warning, be careful not to get the sap of a Poinsettia on your skin as they can cause irritation, and always keep them out of reach of pets and children. Have a wonderful Christmas and Happy New Year Lee 38 ChristchurchEYE

T
is the season to be jolly where I will once again hear the chorus of ‘’ Twas the night before Christmas, when all through the house, not a creature was stirring, not even a mouse.’’ I hope it to be a month where Grace Christchurch is again glistened with a white carpet of crystal snow and the High Street is littered with hanging balls of coloured lights. The shortest day of the year falls on 21st of December, a day for quiet inner-reflection, a time to process our gratitude and happiness. Moreover, my thoughts develop in a wonder at how lucky we are to live in such a safe and friendly town. What are you thankful for and how will you spend your time? Personally, I have three favourite Christmas moments that occur each year. Firstly, putting out the Christmas decorations symbolises the start of Christmas; where little red and golden ballballs spring from our fresh pine Christmas tree and royal maroon stockings wait in anticipation to once again be filled by Mr Claus himself. Our house is turned into the result of a Christmas explosion by the end of it, not quite living up to the standards of the annual displays at Stewarts Garden Centre, but it’s home. Secondly, I enjoy watching the faces of my family members as they open the presents I have given them. Last but not least, I find it most gratifying to stuff one’s face with a fork full of turkey and Grandma’s homemade stuffing.

Christchurch Rotary
O
ctober and November are very busy months here at Christchurch Rotary. In October we have the Swimafun, a “swimming challenge” open to the local community to raise money towards their chosen charity and ours. Unfortunately, this event was cancelled due to technical pool issues BUT has been re-scheduled for Saturday 25th January, 2014 With this disappointment behind us, and the pending doom of the weather forecasters, what hope did we have for the Stanpit Bonfire and Fireworks Spectacular? I am pleased to advise this event went ahead and all those months of planning were rewarded. Not only has the club secured thousands of pounds to be used in the local community, but also a safe family evening was enjoyed by all. Originally set up because of a tragic case the club set out to create an event celebrating a long tradition in which the whole family could enjoy. The fact that all profits go back into the community is a bonus. So, with funds in the bank its time to start moving the money to its intended home, and there are all to many good causes in our local community that would probably surprise you. Like everyone else at this time of year my thoughts are turning to the Festive celebrations, being with family and having a good time. Unfortunately, only around the corner from us all are the lonely, vulnerable, fragile and forgotten. This will not be far from our thoughts at the club with various festive fund raising already in place. If you think alike then why not come and take a look at us in person, perhaps drop us an email.

Santa Hat Brownies
Showerdome  Ingredients 1 tray of your favorite brownies, cooled and cut into desired size and shape (I used a round cutter)
12-16 small strawberries, cleaned and hulled
vanilla-mascarpone buttercream (recipe below) 200 g sugar 150 g egg whites 450 g soft unsalted butter 1 pinch salt 1 teaspoon vanilla 250 g softened mascarpone cheese Method Place egg whites and sugar in a heat proof bowl and place over a pot of simmering water. Heat whites while whisking continuously until they are hot and sugar has completely dissolved (or 60*C). Remove whites from the heat and - using an electric mixer with a whisk attachment - whip on medium high speed until whites are completely cooled and have formed medium stiff peaks. Add butter in chunks, creaming well between each addition. When butter is fully used, and the curdled look changes to a smooth satin look, add the marscapone and vanilla, whip until well combined. To assemble, pipe a ring of buttercream on top of each brownie. Cut off the base of a strawberry so it is flat and place it upside down on each brownie, pushing slightly to secure in place. Top the tip of the strawberry with a dot of buttercream to finish the santa hat.

Plug-into the future of motoring
B
atchelor Electrical, a Poole based electrical contractor is now certified under a Government-backed initiative to supply and install free* electric vehicle charging units to homes across the South. The recent scheme aimed to kick-start the electric vehicle market has released ÂŁ37m worth of funding nationally including charging points to homes, residential streets, railways stations and public sector car parks and rapid charge-points to facilitate longer journeys. With a typical electric vehicle capable of running on up to 100 miles for as little as ÂŁ2, improved battery technology and various new electric vehicles and plug-in hybrids hitting the showrooms the electric vehicle market is gathering rapid momentum. Furthermore, some manufactures have introduced monthly battery rental for those worried about potential battery performance over time meaning lower upfront vehicle costs and a lifetime battery warranty. “The free charging point funding worth over ÂŁ1,000 is open to all domestic homeowners with off-street parking regardless if they have an electric vehicle currently or not. The installation is simple typically taking half a day. It really is getting the public to think about their future requirements and understanding the importance that electric vehicles will have within the UK in the next 2-5 years.â€? Stuart Patience, Sales and Marketing Manager The Government funding is strictly limited and Batchelor Electrical is, encouraging all homeowners to take advantage of this offer now to have the charging infrastructure in place ready for the future.
