to the Christchurch Eye Community Magazine

As I write this it’s minus 2 degrees outside with possible snow on the way. Bizarre when we’ve been seeing crocuses in the garden EPQSWX ¾S[IVMRK EPVIEH] - HS LSTI MX´W [EVQIV F] XLI XMQI ]SY are reading this; we’ve lots of work to be done on our house which includes replacement of windows and knocking down walls, replacement of boiler and radiators. All this disruption is never great but to have no heating or windows would be even worse! We hope to be using many local trades within the magazine for much of this work. We do already have many trades within our family but when we can, we use local trades. Using local business and services is so important to our local economy, not only that but those within these pages is how this community magazine is funded, printed and distributed around Christchurch. Please help keep us all going and support us where you can. Don’t forget to mention ‘The Eye’ when replying to adverts. Thank you everyone for your emails and letters that you have sent in, it makes me so happy to know that you are enjoying the magazine and look forward to the next edition the following month. As we grow, we are able to bring you more editorials making for an even more interesting read. Comings and Goings – The Christchurch Tramway The present Tuckton Bridge was opened in 1905 and is reputed to be one of the earliest surviving ĞdžĂŵƉůĞƐ ŽĨ Ă ďƌŝĚŐĞ ĐŽŶƐƚƌƵĐƚĞĚ ƵƐŝŶŐ ĂŶ ŝŶŶŽǀĂƟǀĞ ĐŽŶĐƌĞƚĞ ĂŶĚ ŝƌŽŶ ƚĞĐŚŶŝƋƵĞ ŬŶŽǁŶ ĂƐ ,ĞŶŶĞďŝƋƵĞ ĂŌĞƌ ƚŚĞ &ƌĞŶĐŚ ĞŶŐŝŶĞĞƌ ǁŚŽ pioneered it. It replaced a previous wood and iron ďƌŝĚŐĞ ĂŶĚ ǁĂƐ ƐƉĞĐŝĮĐĂůůLJ ĚĞƐŝŐŶĞĚ ƚŽ ďĞĂƌ ƚŚĞ weight of an electric tramway. Having passed this test, in the ĞĂƌůLJ ĂŌĞƌŶŽŽŶ ŽĨ dƵĞƐĚĂLJ ϭϳƚŚ KĐƚŽďĞƌ ϭϵϬϱ eight airily decorated tramcars full to capacity with dignitaries and invited guests departed ĨƌŽŵ ŽƵƌŶĞŵŽƵƚŚ ^ƋƵĂƌĞ ŽŶ ƚŚĞ ƌŽƵƚĞ ƚŽ Christchurch. The only delay on the journey was the necessary halt to switch the power from a conduit feed (which was buried in the road between the rails to avoid unsightly wires in Bournemouth town centre) to an overhead supply. ƚ ƚŚĞ ŽƌŽƵŐŚ ďŽƵŶĚĂƌLJ ŽŶ dƵĐŬƚŽŶ ƌŝĚŐĞ ƚŚĞ Mayor of Christchurch invited the Mayoress of Bournemouth to cut a tape barrier, there being ‘no massive gates to unlock, or bars to draw’. dŚĞ ƚƌĂŵ ƉƌŽĐĞƐƐŝŽŶ ƚŚĞŶ ĐŽŶƟŶƵĞĚ ƚŽ ƚŚĞ ŇĂŐͲ ďĞĚĞĐŬĞĚ ƚŽǁŶ ĐĞŶƚƌĞ͕ ǁŚĞƌĞ ĂŶ ĞdžĐŝƚĞĚ ƚŚƌŽŶŐ was assembled to welcome this new era of public transport. dŚĞ άϱϬ͕ϬϬϬ ŚƌŝƐƚĐŚƵƌĐŚ ĞdžƚĞŶƐŝŽŶ ŽƉĞŶĞĚ ĨŽƌ ƌĞŐƵůĂƌ ƐĞƌǀŝĐĞ ƚŚĞ ĨŽůůŽǁŝŶŐ ĂŌĞƌŶŽŽŶ ĂŶĚ became part of a local network that carried ŽǀĞƌ ϯϮ͕ϬϬϬ ƉĂƐƐĞŶŐĞƌƐ ĚĂŝůLJ Ͳ ƚŚƌĞĞ ƟŵĞƐ ƚŚĞ ƉŽƉƵůĂƟŽŶ ŽĨ ŚƌŝƐƚĐŚƵƌĐŚ Ăƚ ƚŚĂƚ ƟŵĞ͊ &ƌŽŵ

To generate the electricity for the tramway a ƉŽǁĞƌ ƐƚĂƟŽŶ ŚĂĚ ďĞĞŶ ĐŽŶƐƚƌƵĐƚĞĚ ŝŶ ĂƌŐĂƚĞƐ ;WŚŽƚŽͿ͕ ĂŶĚ ƚŚŝƐ ŽƉĞƌĂƚĞĚ ĨŽƌ ŽǀĞƌ ϯϬ LJĞĂƌƐ ƵŶƟů ƐƵƉĞƌƐĞĚĞĚ ďLJ ƚŚĞ EĂƟŽŶĂů 'ƌŝĚ͘ dŚĞ ƌĞĚ ďƌŝĐŬ building is now Grade II listed and considered to ďĞ ŽŶĞ ŽĨ ƚŚĞ ŵŽƐƚ ĐŽŵƉůĞƚĞ ĞĂƌůLJ ƉŽǁĞƌ ƐƚĂƟŽŶƐ to survive in England. Totally Locally is a social enterprise and ‘shop local’ movement. The scheme Julie provides free help to towns which want to support their small businesses, whether they are shops, trades people or in professions, such ĂƐ ĂĐĐŽƵŶƚĂŶƚƐ ĂŶĚ ƐŵĂůů ƉƵďůŝƐŚĞƌƐ ůŝŬĞ ŚĞƌLJů͊ Businesses taking part are able to use ƉƌŽĨĞƐƐŝŽŶĂů ŵĂƌŬĞƟŶŐ ŵĂƚĞƌŝĂůƐ͕ ƉƌŽǀŝĚĞĚ by Totally Locally, that encourage people to ƵƐĞ ůŽĐĂů ƐŚŽƉƐ ĂŶĚ ƐĞƌǀŝĐĞƐ͘ ^ƵĐŚ ƐĐŚĞŵĞƐ are already working well in other parts of the country, serving to highlight and promote what ŝƐ ĂǀĂŝůĂďůĞ ŝŶ ƚŚĞŝƌ ůŽĐĂůŝƟĞƐ͘ ŶŽƚŚĞƌ ƐƵŐŐĞƐƚĞĚ ŝŶŝƟĂƟǀĞ ŝƐ ĨŽƌ ƚŚĞ h< ƚŽ ĨŽůůŽǁ ƚŚĞ hŶŝƚĞĚ ^ƚĂƚĞƐ ĂŶĚ ŚŽůĚ ĂŶ ĂŶŶƵĂů ^ŵĂůů ƵƐŝŶĞƐƐ ĂLJ͘ dŚĞ ^ŵĂůů ƵƐŝŶĞƐƐ ĂLJ is a scheme with the same aim as Totally Locally.
