welcome

to the Christchurch Eye Community Magazine

editor’s letter

As I write, it’s raining outside.Yet again! It feels like it has been raining every day for weeks, if not months! Turn to page 6 to read our local history article written by Phil Tate, which seems very apt this month as he tells us about the floods here in Christchurch, back in the late 18th and early 19th century. With the magazine becoming more and more popular, it allows us to continue to grow; thus bringing you more local editorials making for an even more interesting read. Thank you everyone for your continued support by not only using the local trades and services within the magazine but also for the lovely emails and letters that you send in, it makes me so happy to know that you are enjoying the magazine and look forward to the next edition the following month. Using local business and services is so important to our local economy, not only that but those within these pages is how this community magazine is funded, printed and distributed around Christchurch & Highcliffe. Please help keep us all in business and support us where you can. Don’t forget to mention ‘The Eye’ when replying to adverts. Happy Reading,

Cheryl Cheryl Dennett Editor & Publisher

We are an independent, non-political, non-profit Peter making Christchurch based organisation run by its members for its members. We are open to all sizes and types of trade and businesses from one person home-run businesses to the Borough’s largest employers. I hope our recent success with the £1 for 2 hours parking campaign demonstrates that by working together we can achieve change for the better. We offer each other support and provide networking and social events and are a great place to keep up to date on what is happening. Although we already have 130 member businesses, at the start of 2014 the Chamber is keen to attract new members to boost our claim to speak on behalf of the businesses of the borough. Come along and meet us at one of our events at the Kings Hotel, Castle Street, Christchurch. Upcoming up are:

An English Mum

I

recently met up with an old friend and told her the exciting news that we will soon be hearing the patter of tiny feet in the English mum household. She looked a bit shocked Rachel until I explained it would be four feet, not two. On seeing the relieved look on her face, I couldn’t resist adding (with tongue firmly in cheek), ‘Yes, it’s twins!’ After picking her up from the floor (!) I did confess that I was joking, and actually it is a rather lovely rescue dog that will be joining us!

I am anticipating that this month will mostly be spent getting to know our new family member, mopping the floor and replacing chewed items! I am hopeful that the shoe mountain which currently resides in my hallway will quickly disperse to the respective owners rooms once their trainers/boots/slippers etc. have been sniffed, drooled over and generally chomped! I am equally hopefully that the enthusiastic promises to assist with walking duties will be adhered to. Just in case they should be conveniently ‘forgotten’, I am preparing a binding agreement (to be signed by all family members and stuck to the fridge door), containing the clause that if they should decide they no longer wish to walk/feed/poopy scoop the dog, then I in turn will no longer wish to taxi/feed/ clean up after them! Watch this space on that one! I’m very much looking forward to finding new places in and around Christchurch to take our little chap for a walk — so if you should spot me out and about chasing after a small poodley looking dog, do give me a wave! An English Mum x

Mix the ground nuts, flour, cinnamon and salt together in a mixing bowl, set aside. In a large bowl beat the butter and caster sugar together until light and fluffy, this may be done by hand or in a food mixer. In a small bowl, lightly beat the egg with the vanilla and almond extract if using. Beat half the egg mixture into the creamed sugar and butter, then beat in the other half. Continue to beat until combined. Add all the dry ingredients and mix gently by hand until all the ingredients have been combined. Divide the dough in half, shape each piece into a disc, place in a polythene bag and chill for 2 hours in the fridge. If you want to make this ahead of the day, the dough can be stored in the fridge for 3 days or 2 months in the freezer). Preheat the oven to 190C / Gas Mark 5, and line two trays with greaseproof paper or a silicone baking mat. Lightly flour the work surface and roll out the first piece of dough until it is about 1/4 inch / 0.5cm thick. Cut out as many heart-shapes as the dough can fit. Gather up the scraps with the second disc of dough and continue to roll out the dough and cut out the cookies. Cut out the centres of half the cookies using a smaller heart-shaped cutter. Transfer the cookies to the baking sheets and bake for 12 14 minutes or until the cookies are golden, dry, and firm to the touch. These cookies don’t spread so don’t have to be spaced out too far apart. Remove from the oven and allow to cool while the second batch is baking. Heat up some jam in the microwave or on the stove top until it is warm. Spread half to a teaspoon-full of jam on the cookie and place a cookie with a cut-out centre on top. Lightly dust with powdered sugar before serving. If you don’t want the jam to be sprinkled with icing sugar, you can dust the cookie-toppers with the cut-out centres first, then place them on top of the jammy bases before serving.

Christchurch Citizens Association

O

ur members would like to thank the council for the beautiful flower arrangements throughout Christchurch during the summer especially the wild flowers at Stony Lane and Jumpers. Also, the Christmas lights were quite spectacular and managed to withstand the frightful weather. February is not the kindest month of the year but spring is just around the corner and we must remain upbeat and positive to tackle any problems that are bound to arise. One lady who attended our last meeting was not aware of our existence until she read the Christchurch Eye. We hope to see her again along with other members of the public who really can make a difference in the way town affairs can affect us all. Three issues on which we would appreciate the views of the public are the felling of trees in Druitt Gardens, a bus lay-by outside Waitrose and keeping the Kings Hotel Bowling Green as an open space. Our next meeting Monday 3rd March at Druitt Hall 7.30pm so why not come along and join us?

Free parking period at Wortley Road car park, Highcliffe

I

n order to support local businesses in Highcliffe, Christchurch Council is offering free parking for a two-hour period during the day at Wortley Road car park.

The free period, identified by local businesses as the best time, is from 1pm to 3pm each day from Tuesday 3 December to Monday 31 March. Cllr Trevor Watts, chairman of Christchurch Council’s Resources Committee, said: “We are very aware that the shopping centre in Highcliffe has been suffering from the recession with businesses closing and not all being replaced. Our figures also show falling usage of the Wortley Road car park, indicating that the village was attracting fewer shoppers. “The council decided to offer some help and asked some of the businesses in the village what would make a difference. Top of the list was two hours of free parking between 1pm and 3pm because that seems to be when trade falls away. “As part of our annual review of car parking charges, we have agreed to this request over the winter period and hope that business will pick up as a result.” Traders have also asked for the highway signage directing drivers to the car park to be improved. Discussions have been on going with Dorset Highways and initial indications are that improvements can be made. Councillors and officers are continuing to meet to look at other initiatives that will help existing and new businesses in Highcliffe as well as local residents and the wider community in the years to come.

aving won the support of the Council in July of this year, Christchurch Fairtrade Group has now applied to the Fairtrade Foundation for Fairtrade Town status. Keep an eye out this New Year for the launch of the new Fairtrade Directory, which will list all the places in Christchurch where Fairtrade products can be bought. The Directory will be available in many local shops, hotels and restaurants as well as the visitor information centre. The group is now getting ready for Fairtrade Fortnight when we will be holding a day of Fairtrade celebrations with lots of stalls selling exciting Fairtrade products (such as Lush) and samples galore. Make a note in your diary for Saturday 1st March at the Baptist church on Bargates from 10.30am to 2.30pm and come and try the free chocolate fountain! Children and adults alike will be able to dunk Fairtrade bananas in delicious Fairtrade chocolate It’s hard to believe but 2 out of 3 bananas sold in the UK are still “unfairly” traded. Being a Fairtrade banana grower makes a huge difference to the farmers and their workers in the industry – come and see for yourself. The prize for the 2014 raffle will be drawn on the day. The winner will receive a hamper of Co-operative Fairtrade products worth £200. Could it be you? Raffle tickets will be available in January 2014, costing £1 each. There will also be prizegiving for the Fairtrade Senior schools’ poetry competition. For details see www. christchurchcommunitypartnership.org.uk/fairtrade. For anyone interested in getting more involved, our group is seeking a treasurer and a secretary. We meet about 6 times a year, for an hour each time and our accounts just need checking once a year. Christchurch Rotary

W

ell the New Year resolutions are all history, dark nights and bad weather here for the next few months. But, I only have to look at my Rotary diary to see Christchurch Rotary Club is back in full swing with the Swimafun pending (Saturday 25th January at Two Riversmeet Leisure Complex), and the Club poised to give out some serious money. The Swimafun had to be re-scheduled due to technical difficulties and I know all will have a fun evening. This event has now become a regular fixture in the diary and raises thousands of pounds for local good causes.

Adopt a Pet

I

’m Jennie and I’m between 3 and 4 years old and just 25.5 inches to the shoulder. I’ve been in foster for a very long 3 months through no fault of my own. I’m a beautiful, shiny black and white saluki greyhound. I was found wandering as a stray so I can be wary of strangers to begin with, but love cuddles once I get to know people. I love children and love playing with squeaky toys and running for the ball. I have been patiently waiting for the right home and deserve to have a comfy bed to call my own.

Two main capital expenditures have been given the green light by the club namely: Burton Scouts and Hope for Children. We were given a talk by Graham Markwick from Burton Scouts who advised us that the Scout movement is going from strength to strength. Their present building has served them well but action is now required, and Christchurch Club have pledged their support.

To find out more visit www.grwe.com or call 07000 785 092

In addition we are also donating to Hope & Homes

For Children. Mark Cook gave us a moving and positive talk on the real tangible difference the charity is making. He praised Rotary International who has supported them but we all wanted to help even more. Last month I thanked our business partners but forgot to say a huge Thank You to Christchurch Eye for giving us this opportunity of a regular feature. The magazine really is doing well and we are delighted to have this opportunity, thank you again.

aving started its life as a single handed, wooden boat rescue service from Avon Beach, Mudeford RNLI lifeboat station has evolved over the past 50 years and now boasts a volunteer crew of 31 who are based in a purpose built lifeboat house on Mudeford Quay. For 50 years the RNLI team at Mudeford lifeboat Station have overseen the rescue of 1961 people in danger off the villages coast. There have been 5 lifeboats at the station, with the last inshore lifeboat Mudeford Servant having been on station since 2006. The charity’s volunteer crew and shore helpers are on call 24 hours a day, 7 days a week to ensure that when help is needed they are ready within minutes to launch for service. Andy Hack, Mudeford RNLI Lifeboat Operations Manager said ‘ 2013 was an important year for the station as we commemorated the commitment of volunteer crews past and present, and our supporters who have maintained the lifeboat service here over the last 50 years. When looking back at the history of our station and the courageous actions of our volunteer crew, we all feel extremely proud and privileged to be involved in maintaining what is an important part of our local community and the RNLI’s ring of safety around the coastline.’ The RNLI is the charity that saves lives at sea and the current cost of running Mudeford Lifeboat Station is £90,000 a year. In order to maintain the enviable tradition of the local lifeboat service and support the selflessness of the volunteer crew, the team rely on public donations and legacies, no matter how large or small. Pancake race to launch 2014 Christchurch Food & Wine Festival

C

hristchurch Food and Wine Festival will officially launch its new website and dates for the 2014 festival with the revival of a well-known event that originally was held in Christchurch for many years – a pancake race in Church Street. Shrove Tuesday, Tuesday 4 March 2014, will see teams of chefs, local businesses and local celebrities battle it out to win the golden frying pans! Relays will kick off at 11.00am and, after the result has been declared, spectators will have the chance to visit and support chefs at Splinters, Cheese and Alfies and James and White who will have made delicious pancakes especially for the occasion. Purewell Electrical announce new ÂŁ2 million superstore to open Summer 2014

W

e are delighted to announce that Purewell Electrical has purchased the former Dreams bed retail shop in Christchurch, and will be opening a new 15,000 square foot store next summer.

The store in Wilverley Road will create a number of new jobs in customer services, deliveries, online sales and in a new business-to-business trade account department. More information will appear on our vacancies page in the coming months. Our Managing Director Ian Griffiths said: “I am delighted to secure the future of our company in what will be our 59th year in Christchurch, and hope to provide a shopping experience like nowhere else in the area for electrical products. “It has been a very difficult industry of late, with the recession leading to the demise of Comet and other smaller independent retailers, and I feel that now is the time to expand. “We have a great team who have been working hard and we want to thank our many loyal customers who shop with us – we hope to give them a reason to carry on shopping with us over the coming years in what I hope will be a state of the art technology and kitchen storeâ€?. The new store will be over two floors and will see an increased range of technology and home solutions, as well as live cookery demonstrations and a cook shop, with almost ÂŁ2million being invested before opening in summer 2014. A number of manufacturers have already expressed excitement about the project and we look forward to working with key partners such as Panasonic, Sony, LG, Dyson, Rangemaster, Bosch, Siemens and many more over the coming months, to give the people of Christchurch an exciting new retail experience!! Garden View

Gardens for play By February Christmas can seem like a distant memory: toys and games which were desired for months beforehand, are now no longer new. I’m sure I’m not alone in remembering how the excitement of a new toy soon faded, but for me the big box in which it was wrapped provided entertainment for a much greater length of time because it could be turned into a car, a bus, a den or a robot. Recently I was asked to apply this theory when designing a family garden: a fun outdoor space, with no obvious pieces of play equipment such as a big blue climbing frame; a bright red slide, or a plastic swing. Instead fun is designed into the garden space much more subtly, the key being to introduce elements which children can ‘accidentally’ find, and which stimulate thought and exercise their creative minds. Children love pretending, and creative play can include play sand, water and of course mud (surely you must have made mud pies or sloppy dosh when you were a child – for those who didn’t its mud and water mixed in a bucket or bowl with a stick then left to harden in the sun). Elements such as a mud kitchen, logs to jump off and a tree to climb are all much more fun (and cheaper) than modern play equipment. I love to see a garden which on first inspection looks like an adult space, but has elements for initiating play. Stepping stones through a border; a self contained water feature; bark areas under trees for den making; grass mounds for climbing up and rolling back down; paths to race bikes on; washing line poles to climb, and a small bridge to cross when escaping from trolls…the usual thing! Parents also often ask about child-friendly plants, and it’s a tricky question to provide a quick answer for. There are basically two ways in which children could be adversely affected by garden plants: ingestion, or contact. The majority of ornamental plants, roots, seeds and berries range from slightly to very toxic, but statistically (research shows) that the number of deaths is tiny. The vast majority taste so disgusting that your child probably would spit most of it out, and if poisonous then vomiting would most likely occur because it is the body’s natural defence mechanism (apple pips must surely be the most commonly eaten poisonous seeds!). Foxgloves, fungi and Delphinium seeds are the most commonly known plant poisons, but others less well known include Daffodils, which are planted in most gardens and public places without a second thought. The leaves of Rhubarb, green parts on tomatoes and potatoes are all harmful, but we still grow them in schools. I think garden education at a young age is the key, and given most under 3’s won’t be outside alone in the garden it shouldn’t be a problem … anyway, they’ll be too busy playing to eat the plants! Happy (and safe) gardening Lee 34 ChristchurchEYE

I

t is the norm for our society to immediately associate February to St Valentine’s Day, the 14th day of the month. Whilst this celebration should continue to be embraced with chocolates, flowers and stuffed bears cradling Grace extraordinarily exuberant and decorative crimson hearts, there are also other annual events that occur during February which should be acknowledged. February officially swings in the Chinese New Year and with 2014 brings the year of the horse. With it being one of the Chinese’s favourite animals, the horse connotes symbolism of travelling, competition and victory. Furthermore, the horse is connected to heat, fire and the colour red. Since the horse is as a social animal and red is also connected to love, horse is therefore treated as a Romantic Star in Chinese Horoscopes. Most importantly the horse exemplifies the passionate idea and momentum of freedom. Perhaps, if you have already slipped from those newly found resolutions from January you could give yourself a second chance and resolve to refresh your targets with the Chinese New Year. After having a proud and patriotic summer of the London Olympics; February 7th kicks off the start of the Winter Olympics in Sochi. After such an electrifying and illustrious summer our passion for sport can once again be ignited! It is often found that the summer Olympics over shadow the prodigious sport that is displayed every year by world-class athletes who train so diligently and with such assiduous determination. However, that being said, February is indeed a month of love. With the tragic story of St Valentine hearts will be throbbing all over the world. Christchurch is sure to be booked with couples looking to romance their partner with lavish restaurant dates or moonlit walks along the quay. Love is in the air.

REGENT CENTRE HIGH STREET, CHRISTCHURCH 01202 499199

Theatre Review

T

he Glad Rag Production Company’s Christmas Spectacular recently staged at the Regent Centre in Christchurch, was indeed quite spectacular! I went along with my teenage son and two year old daughter on Christmas Eve as a festive treat for us. The run up to Christmas hadn’t been particularly Christmassy for us until we went along to the show, and what a show it was! From the opening song, the cast (who are all local by the way, including the children coming from local groups and schools) uplifted everyone’s spirits with traditional Christmas songs alongside plenty of comedy keeping the whole family entertained throughout. I couldn’t believe the amount of splendid costumes (I heard numerous comments from spectators after the show about the costumes being fabulous), which gave the impression that we were at a West End show. We’ve only ever been to one other show before in the Regent, which was great, but this one was truly magical and judging by the full house within the theatre, this is clearly no secret (and certainly not now!). The Glad Rag Production Company will be performing again at Easter with their Easter Holiday Special from Friday 18th to Sunday 20th April. Tickets are on sale now at the Regent Box Office. I’ve already got ours booked as this is one show I don’t want to miss out on. I’d like to congratulate the creative team on such a fabulous production; they’ve certainly set the standard high for any future shows!
