Dates for your diary this month include Shrove Tuesday on 9th and Valentine’s Day on the 14th. Shrove Tuesday is also often referred to as Pancake Day, Fat Tuesday and Mardi Gras Cheryl which is French for ‘Fat Tuesday’! An interesting little fact that I didn’t know until researching this today so thought I’d share with you! Shrove Tuesday is the last day of feasting before Lent, which begins on Ash Wednesday. It’s called so due to the tradition of eating pancakes on the day. This tradition comes from a time when rich foods were eaten on the day before Lent, when fasting begins. We’ve a fabulous pancake recipe for you to try this month on page 40 and are really easy ones to make with the kids too! Valentine’s Day is on the 14th and what better time to support your local shops? We’re very fortunate to have many interesting boutiques here in Christchurch selling an abundance of wonderful gifts for both men and women. We also have a vast array of wonderful cafés, bistros and restaurants in the town if a romantic candlelit dinner is on the cards, book early to avoid disappointment. Shopping and dining locally helps boost our local economy so therefore benefits us all! It’s a Leap year this year so don’t forget to add an extra day to the calendar this February. 29th February in a leap year is said to be the one day when a woman can propose to her partner! - That is a very curious date!

Christchurch Priory has several tombstones with dates which look like fractions. It is as if they did not know which year it was when their loved one died. The explanation is that for nearly 200 years there were two calendars, one `old style’ and the other `new’. This was because for centuries Western Europe followed the system begun by Julius Caesar in 45BC which was a year 365 days long with a `leap day’ added every fourth year – the Julian calendar. This is such a year. The New Year started at the spring equinox, March 23rd, when planting usually began. The names of our months from September to December reflect their number in this system. In March 1582 the Pope Gregory XIII introduced a revised system for Catholic countries, with the year starting in January – the Gregorian calendar. There was also a correction of dates when Thursday 4th October was followed by Friday 15th October 1582 because the actual solar equinox had slipped from March 23rd. The problem of the old and new styles was finally resolved in England by the Calendar Act of 1752. However it involved two corrections. First there needed to be an adjustment between the two calendars and the day following Wednesday 2nd September was renumbered 14th . A more important change was moving the start of the year from 25th March to 1st January. So there was a effectively a `short year’. The people colleting tax in the Treasury rebelled at this idea, so their year still runs from April. In order to find some of the curious tombstones, walk up the Nave in the Priory and turn left by the Pulpit. Look down on the floor near the northern stone seat.

The photograph below should help. The left hand one for “Samuel Keay of Blackwater is dated 2nd of February 1696/7”. Next to it, but laid the other way round is for “”Robert Kerly who died January the 7th 1736/7. If these are obscured, go on a little further, near where the organist sits and look down for Ralph [Loc]kyer and a more curious date – 1716/17 carved on the stone. The second of the next pair is not so easy to read. They are opposite the steps down from the Great Quire. “John the son of James Welshman... of Musclife... who departed this life the 1 day of February Anno Domini 1703/4”. Further on and close to the grey radiator is a date 1706/5 for “Tabitha daughter of Henry Richman”. Another tombstone which is easy to find and read is in the south Quire aisle, close to the glass cabinet which contains the cope. This is for William Goldwyer and the date is 1728/7. There are some further tombstones like these, but they are hard to read or obscured by furniture. I plan to describe some other interesting tombstones or inscriptions in future articles.

Christchurch Blue Plaques by Stephen Roberts No. 13 - “The cold, bare walls”

Sometimes buildings can be disingenuous, in the same way that people can be. What you see is not always what you’ve had. The Red House Museum (plaque 15) is a case in point. It is a happy place today, a pot-pourri of local history, wide-eyed children and pleasing gardens that gaze at the Priory’s tower. What’s not to like? It was not always so. This building once housed Christchurch’s workhouse, or poorhouse. Here lived all sorts requiring shelter and food when on their physical, mental or economic ‘uppers’. The aged, the infirm, orphans, tramps, wayfarers, the sick and so-called ‘lunatics’, abandoned wives; they all ended up here. The system did not discriminate between ne’er-do-well and war-hero; if they were down on their luck, they could be fellow inmates. Thomas Warr, Dorchester-born, ended up penniless in his local workhouse, where he died, aged 87. In his pomp he participated in the Charge of the Light Brigade, during the Crimean War. Stories like that are hard to credit and even harder to bear. Few inhabitants of Christchurch’s workhouse were fit to work, but those who could eked out an existence spinning flax, making clothes and shoes, knitting stockings, plaiting straw for bonnets and working in the town’s fusee-chain industry, where women and children were preferred because of their more dexterous hands. This was no joyous place. ‘In the Workhouse – Christmas Day’ (George R Sims, 1879) may sound like festive

cheer, but it was actually a campaigning journalist’s criticism of harsh conditions pertaining in the workhouse, as per the 1834 Poor Law. “The cold, bare walls,” and the, “long and hungry Stephen line,” leave little room for doubt. The building that is now the Red House was built next to a barn/poorhouse, itself becoming the workhouse (1764-1885). We owe a debt to prodigious collector Herbert Druitt, who preserved and recorded every aspect of the town’s past. It would be his accumulation that eventually formed the core of the museum, which he gifted to the town, the museum opening in 1951, eight years after Druitt’s death. Another misleading building is the hospital on Fairmile Road. This was originally constructed as the town’s next workhouse, after the Red House became inadequate, as the 19th century waxed and waned. This is now being redeveloped, with some old buildings, such as ‘H Block’, onetime workhouse infirmary, being sacrificed in the name of progress. Perhaps the most famous (fictional) workhouse inmate is Dickens’ ‘Oliver Twist’, an orphan, who utters one of the more easily remembered lines from classic literature, “Please, sir, I want some more.” The book, and its eponymous hero, have perhaps become the finest exemplar of workhouse life that we have. Dickens’ portrayal is an unromantic tale of sad, sordid lives and cruel treatment. As so often, he called it right. Next time: Bow House

Congratulations to the Chewton Glen for obtaining planning permission to build their Cookery School – a master class on charming the Christchurch Council Planning Committee.

The controversy over their plans was not the Cookery School itself, but the decision to site the development not near the hotel but at the edge of their grounds on a quiet residential road in the middle of a precious area of green belt. Unsurprisingly, when the first application was submitted, the Planning Committee threw out the application as inappropriate development in the Green Belt. It was hoped that revised plans would be submitted with the development more appropriately placed. Not so. The resubmission was for the same place, but accompanied by a charm offensive.

Gone were the references to it being a Bistro. The Manager’s expressed desire to have a gastro pub was buried and coy references were made to the restaurant being a “tasting area”. As a final ploy James Martin was wheeled out to address the Councillors with a homily about his background and passion. Following the election, the make-up of the planning Committee had changed since the earlier application and the Councillors, previously stony-faced and firm, melted and granted the permission on the ground of economic benefit to the developer being clearly ‘a very special circumstance’ to build on Green Belt. The Chewton Glen is naturally delighted. The Cookery School is part of their plan to maintain their reputation as one of the top hotel destinations and it is a competitive market, so every advantage counts.

If the hotel keeps to its promises, James Martin will be a regular at the school and, whilst one anticipates many lessons will be financially beyond the reach of most of us, the application did promise provision to local schools and youngsters.

Christchurch Citizens Association The Christmas lights in the town were again exceptional and made Christchurch look really special, many thanks to all those responsible. Many of us would have preferred crisp frosty days but the weather was unseasonably warm and wet. Cherry blossom, campanula, even clematis are showing new shoots. We are so lucky not to have endured the terrible floods they had in the north of the country. As Christchurch is placed between two rivers and near the sea, the CCA will be writing to the powers that be, asking how often the harbour and rivers are dredged in light of the Directive in 2000 brought in by the EU and the Environment Agency. This will be discussed at our next meeting.

As you know the Town Plan has been drawn up and here are some of the proposals: 1. Close the underpass and replace with new road layout and traffic lights. 2. Glazing in the Mayor’s Parlour 3. Build a cafe on the pitch and putt next to the Boathouse restaurant 4. Narrow the High Street and level pavement and road in some parts (i.e. in front of the Mayor’s Parlour, Regent Centre and Kings Arms doing away with kerbs).

There are many more ideas which have been put forward to enhance the look of Christchurch but as mentioned in the November ‘EYE’ a concerted effort in giving the town a spring clean by clearing weeds from pavements and gutters, re-painting post boxes, cutting back overgrown hedges and generally clearing away rubbish on a regular basis would be a step forward and costs would be minimal, which in these days of financial cut backs should prove very popular. The CCA will continue to feed back to the council local residents views. Our next meeting is on Monday March 14th in Druitt Hall at 7.30pm.

Last year, Superfast Dorset’s £37m project continued to provide even more residents and businesses in Christchurch with faster, more reliable fibre broadband. The partnership between central government, all Dorset district and borough councils and BT, is building on previous work undertaken by the private sector. By 2017, the project will have provided fibre broadband to an additional 90,000 Dorset premises that would have otherwise missed out.

Superfast broadband increases both download and upload speeds, allowing you to spend more time doing what you enjoy online. Be able to stream your favourite movies and TV shows without buffering, discover a new hobby, ensure there are no groans from the gamers in the family and work much more efficiently from home and also being able to video call in to meetings.

94 per cent of Christchurch can access superfast broadband. So far, the project has provided the borough with 15 fibre cabinets, allowing around 1,500 Christchurch properties access to speeds of up to 80Mbps. With another eight cabinets planned for 2016, around 2,600 properties in Christchurch will directly benefit as a result from Superfast Dorset’s roll-out. Residents who want to know if their home or business can receive superfast broadband should search Superfast Dorset for the latest information. The higher the number of people using the service, the more funding the project receives to continue to improve broadband throughout Dorset. 14 per cent of those with access to the service in Christchurch are using it. Residents should remember to call their internet service provider and ask to switch the fibre broadband as an upgrade is not automatic. Superfast Dorset also works in partnership with Skills & Learning to help encourage those who are left behind digitally to get online. Skills & Learning offer free digital inclusion workshops in locations all across Dorset. Having reflected on 2015, now is the time to see how the club can make a difference in 2016.

As we are all too well aware, the present world is Paul constantly changing. Who would have thought that world news would be so shocking, and that despite the lessons that should have been learned, we still find ourselves appalled at conflicts around the world? But what is the answer?

Rotary International makes no political comments. We just react in our usual Rotary way, by helping where we can. We don’t just assist where problems are; we also look to support people who need assistance, in varying ways. On an International front, Rotary has continually been involved in helping on the ‘World stage’. Some countries know us for our global promise to eradicate Polio. There are pockets that spring up but Rotary has made this promise to eradicate this terrible disease, and it will!

Clubs throughout the world will be setting out their own agendas. Christchurch club are no different and we are committed to taking Rotary to our local community. Our agenda for the year will be set in the next few weeks and we will go about our business as usual, but we cannot do this alone. We need your help, YES, YOUR help, YOU reading this. But how? Well why not tell us what you would like to see supported? Some may argue that Rotary should take a political stance, but as we all know politicians come and go, Rotary is a constant in an inconsistent world, and will continue to be long into the future. I constantly stress to readers that we want your input, and we really do. Over the last year I have given reports on how/what we do and will continue to do, but will 2016 be the year YOU make a difference? Only you can decide that. What to get the gardener in your life this Valentine’s Day?

Want a romantic gift for your gardening Valentine? Forget the drooping daffs and jet-lagged lilies, flown halfway round the world and marked up to extortionate prices. For a gardener a real romantic gesture is one that will last longer than a few days. Some gardeners actually dislike cut flowers, and most gardeners are eco-friendly, so when you think of all the paper, yards of cellophane, and air-miles clocked up by exotic blooms, a living plant suddenly seems like a better option. Potted plants are more suggestive of permanent affection than a bunch of flowers anyway, and on a purely practical level, they give much better value for money! Jasmine, stephanotis and gardenias are fragrant and glamorous, or try a passionflower vine, wound round a heart-shaped support. What could be more romantic than that? We think of red roses as being the bloom of romance so what better than an entire bush of them that promises years of pleasure ahead. One problem with rose bushes is that they are not at their best in February, and will most likely resemble a bunch of thorny twigs in a pot! But if your Valentine is a keen gardener I guarantee they will not mind. In fact they will enjoy the anticipation of the future blooms.

Myrtle is another plant you might like to consider. It’s been associated with love since Roman times and is still used in wedding bouquets. With its neat glossy evergreen leaves and clusters of fragrant, fluffy white flowers followed by purple berries, Myrtis communis is a plant of quiet good taste. If planted in a sheltered spot it can eventually grow into a tree up to 5m tall. If you want to give a flower in bloom at the moment try a potted camellia, winter honeysuckle, violas, or an orchid. These plants are all associated with love and longing. If you simply must hand over a bunch of cut flowers, try to choose blooms grown in the mild climate of the Scilly Isles as environmentally-friendly alternatives to exotic species flown in from the other side of the globe. ‘Paperwhite’ narcissi are beautifully scented and available now. With just a little thought you can come up with the perfect gift for the gardener in your life.

Hello! I hope you all had a lovely January and have all recovered the post Christmas blues.

Emily

I’ve been very busy this month planning my 18th birthday, which I’m really looking forward to. My family and I are going away over my birthday weekend but I have no idea where, hopefully I will like it! I’m not sure how my Mum will be able to pack my thousands of presents into the car! I have also been continuing to learn to drive and revising for my theory test. I have spent a long time visiting different car garages and sitting in and trying out various cars. I have discovered that I’m a very fussy buyer! There are so many different models and it is taking a long time to find the perfect one at a reasonable price. At the start of last month I went to my ‘Sixth Form Winter Ball’. The photo booth was very entertaining and there were lots of funny props, which helped us create some very interesting pictures throughout the night. There was also a magician doing magic tricks throughout the evening as well as a sweet buffet where you could fill up pick and mix bags. I can’t believe that this time next year I will be on University nights out, it’s very exciting. I’ve been visiting the Regent Centre in Christchurch quite regularly lately and making the most of all the new films they’ve been showing over the last month. The new Bond film ‘Sceptre’ is showing in March which I’m looking forward to seeing. It’s so lovely to have a local cinema with reasonably priced tickets...and yummy ice cream! One- Cup Pancakes with Blueberries

A super-easy breakfast pancake recipe These are the simplest pancakes to make with kids. You don’t even need scales to weigh out the ingredients - all you need is a cup or a mug!

INGREDIENTS

1 large free-range egg 1 cup of self-raising flour 1 cup of milk Sea salt Toppings Fruit such as blueberries and strawberries Maple syrup or natural yoghurt

METHOD

To make the batter, crack the egg into a large mixing bowl. Add the flour, milk and a tiny pinch of sea salt then whisk everything together until you have a lovely, smooth batter. Put a large frying pan on a medium heat and after a minute or so, add ½ tablespoon of oil. Carefully tilt the pan to spread the oil out evenly. Add a few ladles of batter to the pan, leaving enough space between each one so they have room to spread out slightly – each ladleful will make one pancake, and you’ll need to cook them in batches.

Cook the pancakes for 1 to 2 minutes, or until little bubbles appear on the surface and the bases are golden, then use a fish slice to carefully flip them over. When the pancakes are golden on both sides, use a fish slice to transfer the pancakes to a plate. Repeat with the remaining batter, adding ½ tablespoon of oil to the pan between batches, if needed. Serve the pancakes straight away, topped with a dollop of natural yoghurt, and some extra berries, if you like.

Scouting life in Christchurch

In 1907, the first experimental Scout Camp took place on Brownsea Island in Poole Harbour. From that first spark and the inspiration of Lord Baden Powell the Scout movement was born. That of course was well over a hundred years ago now. But 2016 it is the Centenary of the Cubs Scouts. Soon after the formation of the Scouts the younger boys wanted to join in and the Wolf Cubs were devised, themed on the Jungle Book by Rudyard Kipling (a friend of Baden-Powell). This year the Cubs will be celebrating throughout the year with various exciting activities and camps. Culminating in a renewal of the promise at 19.16pm on 16th December, simultaneously with cubs throughout the country. This year also sees the birth of our latest Scout group here in Christchurch. 22nd (Hurn) Christchurch Air Scouts will start meeting this month. The Air Scouts will do all the activities of the normal Scout groups but in addition will have the opportunity to learn about flying and planes and the Scouts will have the opportunity to actually take to the air. With our own airport in Christchurch and with support from the businesses on the airport, Air Scouts is an ideal theme for the new group. They will be based in Sopley until our new building is constructed in Hurn. We still have places for boys and girls to join the Group, especially at Cub (8 - 10 ½ years) and Scout (10 ½ - 14 years) ages. We do need more adult volunteers to help and funds for the group. As the New Year starts in earnest and all the celebrations come to an end, we, as a Detachment, look forward to another year of exciting Cadet experiences. This year is the 160th anniversary of the Duke of Edinburgh Award Scheme and we are hoping to have Cadet CSM Cranham from the Detachment represent Dorset ACF at an event in Northern Ireland later in the year. February will also see Cadets attending a WW1 Battlefield Tour to Ypres, taking part in the 6 Rifles event on Dartmoor and a Company Weekend at Bovington, all this in addition to our usual parade nights twice a week.

Mum’s the Word It’s one of my favourite days coming up this month, where I feel happy, appreciative of my husband’s cooking skills and rather in love with Natasha something special that I can’t get enough of...Valentines? No, Pancake Day on 9th February!

An entire day where I need no excuse to eat those round golden treats all.day.long. My children also love them so I thought this year I’ll grab some of the lovely fruit from the Christchurch Monday market and do a kind of pancake buffet table for breakfast. Raspberries, strawberries, blueberries and maybe a jar of chocolate spread! I’m a lemon and sugar kind of person but I am yet to convert to the kids!

There is a lot lined up this month in Christchurch to keep you busy in-between tossing your pancakes. On February 15th and 22nd Heartizans Deli and local artist Heidi Steller are hosting an art and supper evening from 7.30-9.30pm. On the evening you get to make and take home your own Lino prints as well as personalising your very own sketchbook for future inspiration. All food, drink and materials are included.
