Happy New Year! And here’s to a prosperous one at that! The [SVH MW XLEX [I EVI RS[ GSQMRK SYX SJ E VIGIWWMSR ½REPP] and just hearing this news can have an effect on the economic climate itself. Knowing we don’t have to squirrel our pennies away as much means we can spend a little more, therefore, boosting the economy. Here’s a thought for you… If every adult in the Christchurch area spent just £5 per week in their local independent shops instead of online or at the big supermarkets, it would be worth an extra £8.2 million per year going into the local economy. This means more jobs, better facilities and a nicer place for us all to live. Makes you think doesn’t it? Totally Locally Christchurch is a local shop campaign for Christchurch & Highcliffe which is soon to be seen everywhere in our local independent shops to remind us of the importance of spending our money locally. Local Eye Magazines will be supporting them throughout and hope that you can do the same too. Invest in your town – Invest in your future. This Society was created in 1989 and almost ŝŵŵĞĚŝĂƚĞůLJ ƚŽŽŬ ƌĞƐƉŽŶƐŝďŝůŝƚLJ ĨŽƌ ƚŚĞ ƌƵŝƩ ƌĐŚŝǀĞ͕ Ă ƐŝŐŶŝĮĐĂŶƚ ĐŽůůĞĐƟŽŶ ŽĨ ĚŽĐƵŵĞŶƚƐ ĂŵĂƐƐĞĚ ďLJ ,ĞƌďĞƌƚ ƌƵŝƩ͘ /ƚ ŚŽƐƚƐ ƌĞŐƵůĂƌ ŐƵŝĚĞĚ walks and a programme of lectures, produces a quarterly magazine, and last year opened The History Shop in Wick Lane. The Friends of the Red House Museum was founded in 1951 to support the newly opened Museum and presently has about 200 members. The Museum is increasingly reliant on volunteers, and the Friends assist with research tasks as well as organising fund-­‐ ƌĂŝƐŝŶŐ ĂĐƟǀŝƟĞƐ ƐƵĐŚ ĂƐ ƚĂůŬƐ ĂŶĚ ƚŚĞ ƉŽƉƵůĂƌ

The Christchurch ŶƟƋƵĂƌŝĂŶƐ ŝƐ ĂŶŽƚŚĞƌ ƐŵĂůůĞƌ ƐŽĐŝĞƚLJ͘ ƌĞĂƚĞĚ ŝŶ ϮϬϬϮ ƚŽ ĐŽŶĚƵĐƚ ĂŶ ĂĐƟǀĞ ͚ŚĂŶĚƐ ŽŶ͛ ƐƚƵĚLJ ŽĨ local history, it has undertaken geophysical surveys of Christchurch Castle, and its recent series of archaeological digs has successfully discovered the ůŽĐĂƟŽŶ ŽĨ ƚŚĞ ůŽƐƚ dŽǁŶ Dŝůů͕ ŽŶĞ ŽĨ ƚŚĞ ŵĞĚŝĞǀĂů watermills recorded in the Domesday Book. ,ŝƐƚŽƌLJ ƌĞƐĞĂƌĐŚ ŵĂLJ ĂƩƌĂĐƚ ƚŚĞ ĂŵĂƚĞƵƌ ƐůĞƵƚŚ͕ ƚŚĞ ĐŚĂůůĞŶŐĞ ďĞŝŶŐ ƚŽ ĚĞƚĞƌŵŝŶĞ ͚ǁŚŽĚƵŶŶŝƚ͛ from the surviving historical clues. One vital source of local evidence is the Christchurch Times, which ƐƉĂŶƐ ϭϯϬ LJĞĂƌƐ ĨƌŽŵ ϭϴϱϱ͘ DŝĐƌŽĮůŵ ĐŽƉŝĞƐ ĂƌĞ ǀŝĞǁĂďůĞ ŝŶ dŚĞ ,ŝƐƚŽƌLJ ^ŚŽƉ͘ ůƚŚŽƵŐŚ ƚŚĞ refurbishment of the Library has necessitated the ƌĞŵŽǀĂů ŽĨ ƚŚĞ ƌƵŝƩ ƌĐŚŝǀĞ ĨƌŽŵ ,ĞƌďĞƌƚ ƌƵŝƩ͛Ɛ ŽŶĞͲƟŵĞ ĨĂŵŝůLJ ŚŽŵĞ ;ĂŶĚ ƚŚƌŽǁŶ ŝƚƐ ĨƵƚƵƌĞ as a locally-­‐held asset into uncertainty), limited access to this precious resource is also available via The History Shop. The Red House Museum has Ă ƐŝŐŶŝĮĐĂŶƚ ĐŽůůĞĐƟŽŶ ŽĨ ƉŚŽƚŽŐƌĂƉŚƐ ĂŶĚ ŽƚŚĞƌ material searchable in its Resource Room, with more behind the scenes. From the 14th century ŚƌŝƐƚĐŚƵƌĐŚ WƌŝŽƌLJ ĂƌƚƵůĂƌLJ ƚŽ ,ĞƌďĞƌƚ ƌƵŝƩ͛Ɛ diaries and Christchurch Miscellany of the early 20th century, the town has a wealth of readily ĂĐĐĞƐƐŝďůĞ ŝŶĨŽƌŵĂƟŽŶ ĂǀĂŝůĂďůĞ͘ /Ĩ LJŽƵ ĂƌĞ ƐƵĸĐŝĞŶƚůLJ ͚ƚŚĞĂƚƌŝĐĂů͛ LJŽƵ ŵŝŐŚƚ conduct you own-­‐guided history walks, or maybe you have the skills to present local history to schoolchildren, the heirs to Christchurch’s heritage. Christchurch’s unique history is what sets it apart ĨƌŽŵ ŽƚŚĞƌ ƚŽǁŶƐ͘ /ƚ ŝƐ ĂŶ ĂƐƐĞƚ ǁŽƌƚŚ ƉƌĞƐĞƌǀŝŶŐ ĂŶĚ ƉƌŽŵŽƟŶŐ ʹ ƉĞƌŚĂƉƐ ƚŚŝƐ ŝƐ ƐŽŵĞƚŚŝŶŐ ǁĞ ĐĂŶ all resolve to do!
