Dear Reader A Happy New Year to you all! I can’t tell you how excited I am about this month’s edition as not only do we have a fresh new look throughout the magazine but some new faces and fabulous new articles for you too. A favourite for most will I’m sure, be our Tucktonia article that we hope to bring you throughout the whole of 2015, kindly written by Alex McKinstry; we kick off with 4-page pullout special for you. Another favourite of mine is our new ‘Local places, local faces’ page where we set about Christchurch & Highcliffe asking you, members of the local community, questions relevant to the local area. Do you recognise anyone you know this month? Turn to page 25 and see!

Cheryl

We also welcome Natasha Gerber, who will be contributing by way of our ‘English Mum’ column and also Laura Philips, our Teen columnist who joined us last month (apologies for the late introduction Laura!). There’s also lots of changes on our website www.localeyemagazines.co.uk including a brand new ‘Local News’ page, so if you have something that you think our readers would like to hear about but are unable to get it to us on time (being a monthly mag, we work quite ahead of time), then why not still send your article in so that we can publicise it on our website the very same day? We’ve a great new events calendar too so you can see what’s happening in the local area at a glance. Are you a facebook user? If so, why not ‘like’ us so you can be kept up to date with what’s going on locally? All our ‘What’s On’ listings are published here, a couple of days before each event so you don’t miss out on anything. Did you know that all our listings are free of charge? If you have an event, club, class or similar that you would like promoted, pop onto our website and submit your listing to us. Another new feature as of next month will be our Local Gig Guide! Christchurch is buzzing with local bands most nights of the week so we hope you like this new feature too. Again, this is free to all local gigs that don’t charge an entrance fee so if you play in a band yourself; why not promote it via us? Now I’ll stop waffling so you can go and pop the kettle on, put your feet up, flick through and see for yourself what’s new, hopefully there’s a bit of something for everyone. Please don’t forget to mention us when using any local services and trades advertised within these pages, as without them there would be no Christchurch Eye! Enjoy!

Cheryl Cheryl Dennett Editor & Publisher

Congratulations to Mrs Pam Higginson & Mr Gilbert for winning our November competitions!

Local History by Phil Tate - The Siege of Christchurch In January 1645, exactly 370 years ago, the centre of Christchurch witnessed probably the bloodiest event in its long history when it became an urban battleground during the struggle between the forces of King Charles I and those of Parliament. At the outbreak of the English Civil War in 1642 Christchurch had declared for the King, but two years later the town was captured by the local Parliamentarian forces and Major Phillip Lower was installed as the new Governor. On 2nd January 1645, Major Lower learned that a sizeable detachment of Royalists was only four miles away. Aware that his small garrison of perhaps fewer than 80 men stood little chance of holding the town against an assault, he hurriedly evacuated his troops and munitions to Hurst Castle and the Isle of Wight. The Royalists entered Christchurch, but realising that they were vulnerable to a counter-attack soon withdrew. However, on 9th January the commander of the Royalist forces in Hampshire, Lord George Goring, who had fought at the Battle of Marston Moor the previous year, wrote to inform the King of his plan to establish a garrison in Christchurch. He marched through the New Forest with 1,000 men, perhaps believing that the town was still undefended. However, Major Lower had already returned to Christchurch with a larger garrison of 200 men and had set about making the town more defensible. It is thought that he increased the height of the castle mound to create a gun-platform. The buildings on the corner of Castle Street and Church Street were pulled down to give his cannons a wider angle of fire, creating a ‘killing zone’ in the market square at the southern end of the High Street. The castle was still an intact stronghold, so the demolition material was probably used to reinforce its outer defences. It is known that the castle ditch was re dug at about that time because Nicholas Pittman, the tenant of what is today the New Forest Perfumery Tea Rooms, had his rent reduced in 1646 to compensate for the partial loss of his backyard. On 15th January 1645, Lord Goring’s troops stormed the town and swiftly advanced through the streets. They were reportedly led to an ‘open place’ - perhaps the market square in front of what is today Ye Olde George Inn - by a local man. However, this was at the cost of his life, for he was the first to fall when the Royalists came under heavy fire from the Parliamentarian troops occupying the castle, the churchyard, and the stone-walled house (now Priory Cottage) of Sir George Hastings, a former Member of Parliament for the town. Although outnumbered 5:1, 6 • Christchurch Eye • January 2015

Major Lower’s garrison made a bold stand. Two days later Parliament wrote to the Governor of the Isle of Wight urging him to send men and supplies to help the besieged garrison. Lord Goring, having already lost many men in his failed attempt to capture the town, and fearing that Parliamentarian reinforcements were on their way, retreated back towards Lymington. Nevertheless, he left enough men in the town to maintain the siege. On 24th January, upon being informed that the Christchurch garrison was ‘reduced to great straits’, Parliament directed Lieutenant-General John Middleton to advance to the town’s aid. After over ten days the remaining Royalists retreated and the siege was finally lifted, but it had seen many people killed and buildings damaged. The town continued under Parliamentarian control for the remainder of the war. Major Lower, who had so boldly repulsed Lord Goring, was later promoted to LieutenantColonel and appointed as Governor of Winchester. After the war, Parliament ordered the demolition of the castle to prevent its use by Royalist rebels. Magna Carta - 800th Anniversary Year King John and his entourage visited Christchurch on 10 occasions during his 17 year reign. When he stayed in the town exactly 800 years ago, on 31st January 1215 whilst on his way to his royal castle at Corfe, and then again on 5th February on the return journey, he undoubtedly had the demands of his increasingly rebellious Barons on his mind. Two weeks earlier, a group of armed Barons had confronted him in London, insisting that he granted a charter to confirm their accustomed liberties. On 15th June 1215, King John was compelled to meet the rebel Baron leaders in a meadow beside the River Thames near Windsor Castle, where he assented to their demands in a document now known as Magna Carta - the Great Charter. Although King John had the Pope annul his oath shortly afterwards, this charter was a crucial step towards enshrining in law the civil liberties we all enjoy today.

A Famous Five Connection by Ruth Sear Enid Blyton (1897-1968) wrote the highly popular Famous Five series of children’s books which were published between 1942 and 1963. Some of the titles were televised in the late 1970s and some of the filming locations were in the Highcliffe and Christchurch area.

The main characters in the stories were Julian, Dick, George (actually Georgina but she disliked being a girl), Anne and Timmy the brave, faithful and intelligent dog. Each tale was a thrilling adventure and might involve mysteries, hidden treasure, secret tunnels and passages, dungeons, villains and smugglers. Exciting and dangerous events occurred when the Five went walking, camping, cycling, caravanning etc. (on their own of course, if grown-ups went along they would have spoiled the narrative!). The children always enjoyed wonderful meals and picnics with no shortage of food, and supplies were no problem even during the years of the Second World War and the rationing of the following years! The first book Five On A Treasure Island appeared in 1942 and twenty-one titles were eventually published. They were best sellers, aided by the evocative illustrations of the Hertfordshire artist Eileen Soper, and were translated into many languages. With reprints, over a hundred million copies have since been sold, making the Five one of the most popular children’s series ever produced. Inevitably there were many ‘spin-offs’. These included Famous Five stationary, jigsaw puzzles, card games, board games, 14 • Christchurch Eye • January 2015

Annuals, birthday cards, sequels by later authors, films and television series. Between 1978 and 1979 ITV produced 26 half hour episodes based on some of the stories. Much of the filming shot outdoors was done in the New Forest, Hampshire, Devon - and Dorset. Local sites for the following titles were used: Highcliffe Castle was the Wreckers Tower in Five Go Down To The Sea, Christchurch was featured in Five Run Away Together, Five Fall Into Adventure, Five Go to Demon’s Rocks, Mudeford became Demons Rocks village and quay and the gardens of Highcliffe Castle were also used. In the 1990s another television series was filmed, but mainly in Northumberland and the West Country. Although most place names in the Famous Five books were fictitious some stories have strong links to the Isle of Purbeck. Indeed Enid Blyton is forever associated with this part of Dorset for she spent many happy holidays in Swanage, visiting three times a year for over twenty years. She first went there in 1931 and the locations inspired her to provide the settings for many of the Five stories. Corfe Castle became Kirrin Castle, Stoborough Heath and Hartland Moor became Mystery Moor, Brownsea Island became Whispering Island and the Isle of Purbeck Golf Course, which she purchased with her husband Kenneth Waters in 1951, was featured in Five Have A Mystery To Solve. Enid Blyton would be pleased that the beautiful Isle of Purbeck today remains mainly unchanged and unspoilt. Incidentally the Waters also bought a farm in 1956 at Stourton Caundle which featured in Five On Finniston Farm.

Business Column New Year is a time to reflect upon the year gone by, whilst looking to the future. Mulling over my articles over the last year: £1 for 2 hours parking in Christchurch town centre. After a long campaign by Peter Christchurch Chamber of Trade, supported by Eye magazines, Christchurch Council introduced the £1 for 2 hours parking in April 2014. It has been a great success for the town centre. Not only is it attracting people into town, but once here, people are less rushed, look around, browse more and stay for a coffee. The great news is that the Council have recommended keeping the new rate for 2015. Christchurch Christmas Festival. Early in 2014, I had real concerns that the Christchurch Christmas Festival may not survive. The Council had ceased to run it and lack of funding threatened its existence. But…a new Community Partnership company was created, the Council provided essential seed funding and the hard work of the new volunteer team resulted in the biggest and best festival yet! The festive stalls, lights and the all-important visit by Father Christmas and his reindeer made it a very special event. Planning for Christmas 2015 will soon be underway! Bournemouth Airport. A visit to Christchurch’s airport resulted in an article praising how the business was run, whilst noting the challenges it faced. Looking forward, it is great to hear that 2015 will see Fly-be coming to the airport, bringing new business and a whole new set of destinations for us to visit. Supermarket Wars. In 2013 and 2014 we watched three supermarket developers slug it out for planning permission. Ironic that not a single brick has yet been laid on any site. The latest news is that Asda are not going into the Bailey Bridge development after all and there is uncertainty at the other sites. Maybe 2015 will be a supermarketfree year after all!

On the Water People have been making their way across the River Stour for generations. According to local historians a passenger ferry has existed for centuries at Wick as part of the route John between Southbourne and Christchurch. Current ferry owners Bournemouth Boating Services and regular ferryman Tony, kindly provided information which revealed a long history. As a natural crossing the Wick Ferry was probably in use before Christchurch Priory was founded and before the Domesday Book. There was no road bridge between Southbourne and Christchurch until a private company built the first bridge at Tuckton in 1882. For most of its history the ferry rights will have been vested in lords of the manor. The first recorded Wick Ferry was started around 1815 by a farm worker named Marshall. He was employed on a farm tenanted from John Sloman of Wick House who provided him with a boat and land on the Wick side of the river which has been the ferry landing place ever since. In the early 1900s a square ended punt was poled across in the summer and a salmon punt was rowed across in winter. In 1927 the ferry was owned by Edmonds who built a boathouse on the Christchurch side and started a caravan park. In February 1954 the Wick Ferry was put out of action by ice on the river for the first time since 1855. Over the years I have had been onboard hundred of boats and covered tens of thousands of sea miles around the world. Having grown up in Southbourne and spent plenty of time in Christchurch there is a good chance that the first boat I travelled on was the Wick Ferry… See you on the water!! MAINTAINING YOUR CARPETS UPHOLSTERY AND FURNISHINGS After buying your house and car the next largest investment you will make is for the carpets and furniture. Regular cleaning will prolong their life and retain the pleasing appearance. In the same way that you would have your car serviced at least once a year then you should consider the same concept when it comes to maintaining those expensive soft furnishings.

How do you go about it? 1. DO IT YOURSELF Produces limited results, can be risky as it is easy to get carried away and over-wet causing shrinkage or discolouration.. Any detergent residues left behind can cause the items to get dirtier much quicker. 2. LEAVE THEM Soil build up can be unsightly and cause long term damage to carpet fibres and fabrics. 3. EMPLOY A PROFESSIONAL CLEANING COMPANY Be wary of half price offers that are pushed through the letterbox, many of these are the hallmark of the ‘bait and switch’ operation. They offer a low price but once in the home the price rises significantly through all the ‘added’ extras. Often they may have no insurance cover in the event that things go wrong. Companies who have been recommended by friends or relatives may be one way of choosing a genuine professional cleaning company. Also look for company who belongs to a recognised specialist trade body such as the National Carpet Cleaners Association (NCCA). Members are required to attend regular training courses and prove they have FULL insurance cover as part of their membership criteria. Your local NCCA members who will be happy to attend to all your needs and provide a free quotation are Peter and Zita at New Forest Carpet Clean.

Local places, local faces Look out for the Local Eye staff in and about Christchurch -

This month we ask you - What do you love about Christchurch?

Sonia Goldney - 57 “I love the history of Christchurch especially the Priory. There are some beautiful shops and cafes in the town and the walks around the Quay are beautiful. The Regent Centre has a lovely cinema, which I often go to and there are some lovely pubs which have some great live music.”

Sheryl Woodford - 30 “I moved to Christchurch just over a year ago to start up my own cleaning company. Everyone is so friendly no matter what age. I love the harbour and surround places. Prezzo is a great place to eat and I often go to the Thomas Tripp to listen to live bands. I really do think Christchurch is a great place to live.”

Ady Hough -38 Bar Manager “What I love about Christchurch is the friendly people all around the town and the characters that make Christchurch a good place to be. I’ve lived in Christchurch all my life, I used to work on the cruise ships for about 3 years so I’ve pretty much seen the world and Christchurch has got to be up there with the best places to visit.”

Janet Lavender - 70 “Christchurch is a very friendly place and has a wonderful community feel. I like that it’s close to the New Forest and Bournemouth Town Centre and I think it’s a beautiful place to live, we’re very lucky.”

Jake Marsh - 23 Bar Manager “Working at The Thomas Tripp I get to enjoy a lot of the great social scene Christchurch has to offer whilst getting paid at the same time! Christchurch has a great sense of community amongst young and old, which you don’t always find in every town.”

Janice Tucker - 72 “Christchurch is always kept so nice; in the summer athe flowers are so colourful and at Christmas the lights are wonderful. I’ve lived here for over 40 years and I just love it.”

In the words of the John Lennon hit ‘Happy Christmas - War is Over’, another year over and what have you done? Well in our Club we can look back at another successful year, not only fund raising, but also getting even more involved in the local community, but we didn’t do this alone.

Paul

Regular readers of this column will have noticed me mentioning our business partners. These are local businesses who support the club. I was invited to one of these partners: Avon Reach (Colten Care) Residential Care Home in Mudeford for an Auction in support of Children in Need. When thinking of going out for the evening, visiting the local care home is probably not everyone’s first choice. Well surprises all round. Drinks and nibbles were provided, alongside the auction of items supplied and made by residents. By the end of the evening over £700 had been raised! Residents, Staff and families enjoyed the evening, raised money for a worthy cause, and left feeling good about themselves. Not a case of Rotary in Action, just a case of ‘putting something’ back, which all equals the same result.

Business partners are a relatively new concept within Rotary but their involvement has been a breath of fresh air and it is only right to thank them all for their valuable support, which has shown itself in many ways. So, to all our club members, business partners and so many others who have supported us we thank you all and wish you all another great year ahead. As always the Rotary door is always open and if these articles have made you curious then why not come along and see us in action! I look forward to seeing you soon.

The Pantomime Adventures of ROBIN HOOD REGENT CENTRE, CHRISTCHURCH 17th to 24th JANUARY 2015 This New Year, the award winning Highcliffe Charity Players’ eagerly awaited family panto at the Regent Centre is The Pantomime Adventures of ROBIN HOOD – a panto they have not performed for nearly a decade. It runs for ten performances including three matinees, a mid-morning and a tea time ‘meet the cast’ show, from 17th - 24th January 2015. Tickets are £9.50-£13.50 and, as usual, profits will go to local charities. So this time it’s much adventuring, high jinks and romance in the forest – Sherwood Forest. Feared by the bad, loved by the good, Robin Hood was the legendary swashbuckling outlaw who, with his Merry Men, robbed from the rich to give to the poor. Toby Bradford and Tina Webster’s hilarious panto adaptation chosen this year by HCP, contains more than its fair share of mayhem and merriment. Ensured, too, is HCP’s renowned panto formula for a fantastic fun evening – great sets and costumes, popular show songs, dazzling dance routines, slapstick humour and, of course, plenty of audience participation (Oh yes you will!). Stuart Darling returns as Musical Director of his third Charity Players’ panto, and the Director is Malcolm George, who joined the Players in 1991 at the age of 16 (and co-directed Cinderella in 1999, winning ‘Best Pantomime’ in the Dorset Panto Awards). “I haven’t directed since Goldilocks in 2008, so I’m delighted to be back in the director’s chair once again,” he says. “And it’s great to have such an enthusiastic and wonderfully talented cast of both HCP favourites and terrific newcomers. We’re certainly having an adventure!” There are three choreographs sharing the dance numbers - long-time member, Louise King, who has directed and choreographed several successful shows for HCP, together with two talented teenagers and enthusiastic dancers, Donatella Butt and Polly Lane, who are choreographing their first ever show. “It’s such a wonderful experience”, say the friends, “we feel privileged to be involved. Dance is a passion and we’ve worked really hard to come up with routines that will do the show justice and that the cast will enjoy.” Says HCP Chairman Georgina Smith, herself an award winning principal boy, director and choreographer, “In our 43 year history, HCP have staged all the traditional pantos. Last year’s pirate adventure, Treasure Island, proved so successful, we’ve purposely chosen another fun-filled tale full of swashbuckling heroics, which we hope will prove equally as popular.”

Tickets are on sale both at the Regent Centre Box Office (01202 499199) and online: www.regentcentre.co.uk Further information www.highcliffecharityplayers.com

Reader’s Letter I was hoping you could help. I recently (if you could call 3 years recent) bought a house on Fitzmaurice Road (BH23 2DY) and desperate to get the history of the road and if at all possible some photographs or pictures of times gone by. I have managed to dig up a little history on St George’s church and found that our house, number 9, was built on the site where the original church building stood. That said, this is pretty much all the information I could find unfortunately. Would you have or at least know of someone that has more photographs and information on Fitzmaurice Road or the general Jumpers area and Christchurch Cemetery area? MIKE MARSH Local History columnist Phil Tate replies: A vital resource for local history research is the archive held by Christchurch History Society. Currently housed in Highcliffe Castle, this archive holds directories, maps, microfilm copies of the Christchurch Times (which was published between 1855-1983), and much more.To learn about accessing the archive, visit the Christchurch History Society’s website: www. historychristchurch.org An extensive collection of local photographs is held by the Red House Museum. This can be viewed, along with other research material, in the first floor Resource Room. Do any readers have early photographs or other information related to Jumpers and the Fitzmaurice Road area to assist Mike with his research? If so, please write to Mike Marsh at: 9 Fitzmaurice Road, Christchurch, BH23 2DY or email: mike@ marshy.me

TUCKTONIA: A FRESH INTRODUCTION Written by Alexander McKinstry

There was a time, not long ago in fact, when every major historical British monument could be found at Christchurch. The site of this cultural cynosure was the Tuckton Golf and Leisure Park off Stour Road, and the monuments formed part of a model landscape called ‘Tucktonia’ - occupying just four of the site’s twenty-one acres, though ‘Tucktonia’ is the name by which the whole theme park tends to be remembered. With nostalgia for the site showing no sign of diminishing, it is time we looked at how this very singular attraction evolved. Its origins lay with the Tuckton Golf School, opened in 1932 by Arthur Vine, an affable cove in plus-fours, who laid out a golf course and driving range on the low-lying meadowland here - floodlit during the summer months. Towards the end of his life he entered into partnership with Harry Stiller, a young motor racing enthusiast and keen golfer, who arrived in Bournemouth in 1958. Having bought the business outright in 1961, one of Harry’s first acts was to secure a drinks licence for the clubhouse, which is how The Golfers’ Arms came into being. The site then ticked over while Harry focused on his Formula Three career: he was British champion three years in a row but retired from the sport in 1968, after two successive accidents test-driving tyres. It was at this point that Harry turned his attention to transforming the Stour Road site into something unlike anything else in the district, installing a miniature railway (‘The Red Eagle Express’), crazy golf, the 35-ft fun-slide of blessed memory, and a gokarting circuit powered by a 170-cc Honda engine, which allowed speeds of up to 23 mph; there was no age limit, so long as the driver’s foot was capable of reaching the brake-pedal. With these features in place, the site reopened as the Tuckton Golf and Leisure Park in 1972, at which point Harry was already planning an additional attraction. ‘A friend of mine suggested I visit Holland,’ says Harry today, ‘and take a look at the Madurodam model village in The Hague - and the moment I set foot there, I knew this was exactly the sort of thing I wanted to bring to Christchurch.’ The result was Tucktonia, a model landscape embodying ‘the best of Britain in miniature’ incorporating Stonehenge, Hadrian’s Wall, the Tower of London, St. Paul’s Cathedral, the Palace of Westminster, a hoverport and a nuclear power station. 34 • Christchurch Eye • January 2015

The first models were in place by 1974, though Harry’s plans to expand the feature meant endless run-ins with the local authorities, to the extent that in 1975 he sold the entire site to Watney’s Grand Metropolitan Ltd., who had been leasing The Golfers’ Arms for a number of years. Watney’s continued to overhaul the site at a cost of £2 million, draining and filling four acres behind the pub to allow for Tucktonia’s expansion; an artificial river was then cut through the new landscape, crossed by models of Tower Bridge and the Clifton Suspension Bridge, while Concorde took off hourly from Tucktonia Airport. Everything was built to a 1:24 scale, right down to the pigeons surrounding Nelson’s column and the graffiti on the model railway station wall.

The grand reopening of Tucktonia took place on 23 May 1976, with Arthur Askey presiding as MC - an inspired choice, for even he towered over most of the models.

As the years went by, further fixtures were added: in 1978 an army helicopter was brought in to lower a 26-ft model of the Post Office Tower, the site being so densely packed by this time that there was no other way of putting it in place. That particular model cost £7,000 to construct and, like its life-size counterpart, was equipped with a revolving ‘restaurant’ section, rotating at eight revolutions per hour. Inevitably, the cost of maintaining these models was high, and the park would be closed between January and March to allow the work to be carried out - though the indoor amusements palace remained open throughout the year, generating a trickle of income.

Despite these overheads, Watney’s insisted the site was still solvent when they sold it to a newly-established local company, Tucktonia Ltd, in 1983. (Peter Arnold, who had been running some of the rides as a sub-contractor, was appointed managing director.) Unfortunately this company ran into difficulties almost from the outset, facing spurned planning applications and a string of abysmal British summers. Accordingly, in 1986 the company resolved to relocate, and sold the site to Costain Homes, pending the 130-home development known as The Meridians that stands there today. Site clearance began in October 1986 and was complete by December, the Tucktonia flag - a chirpy, Union Jackbreasted robin - fluttering above the park at half-mast.

Regrettably, attempts at re-establishing Tucktonia at various other locations never came to fruit, not least because most of the models were destroyed in a warehouse fire in 1990 though Buckingham Palace escaped unscathed, and now forms part of the Merrivale Model Village at Great Yarmouth. Tucktonia Ltd, meanwhile, was dissolved on 19 February 1992, and even The Golfers’ Arms (latterly rebranded ‘Bar Max’) has succumbed to the wrecking-ball. Since then, the days of Christchurch’s first and only theme park have become a fond but increasingly distant memory. Over the next few months we will be tracing the rise and fall of the site here in the pages of Christchurch Eye, and interviewing some of the figures involved in bringing this remarkable attraction to our collective doorstep.

Reader’s Memories We lived in Winchester but often visited my parents who had retired to Wimborne in the early 1970’s. Sadly we only visited Tucktonia once but it has enduring memories for me. - Mrs. Rosie Martin

White chocolate, cranberry and strawberry rocky road

INGREDIENTS 800g white chocolate chopped
 2½ cups quartered white marshmallows

1ž cups (192g) sweetened dried cranberries
1 cup freeze-dried strawberries, sliced lengthwise METHOD Very lightly butter a 20 x 30cm(8x12in) baking pan and line it with foil (the butter will keep the foil from sliding around the pan). Place the chocolate in a heatproof bowl over a saucepan of barely simmering water – do not let the bottom of the bowl touch the water – and cook until chocolate is melted and smooth. Remove from the heat, add the marshmallow and cranberries – keep some of the cranberries for decoration – and stir until well combined. Pour mixture into prepared pan and smooth the top. Sprinkle with the dried strawberries and reserved cranberries. Set aside until firm, 2-3 hours. Cut into pieces, remove the foil and serve.

Christchurch Citizens Association Happy New Year to all our readers and we hope that you all enjoyed the Christmas holidays. However, now is the time for new ideas and resolutions. The Town Centre Plan could mean many changes for Christchurch, so in February we will be inviting Councillors and Officers to attend our meeting for discussions regarding this plan. It is important for all residents to view the plans and let our association and the local authorities know your opinions so that we can ensure that Christchurch remains a pleasant and desirable place to live. We must put pressure on the council and the police to ensure that a police presence is kept within the town. The public must have access to a local office that is open full time. At present the police resources are being wasted as the following example shows:- It was reported at our last meeting that there were two incidents of keys being found and having nowhere to take lost property, an officer had to be sent to the finder to collect the keys! If Bridport, as previously stated are keeping their police station, it stands to reason that the needs of Christchurch who have a higher population should also be allowed to retain theirs. We would like to finish on a positive note by commending the new volunteers and the council on the attractive and eye-catching Christmas lights erected throughout the town this year. Our next meeting is on Monday 5th January 2015 at Druitt Hall at 7.30pm. Contact e-mail:christchurchcitizensassociation@hotmail. co.uk or phone 01202 388900

Belvoir Lettings

2015 - Time to become a landlord? 2015 will see a new era for property investors and will see new inexperienced people entering the market as landlords.

In April 2015 rules will be changing as far as pensions are concerned seeing people being able to draw down some or all of their accumulated pension pot. It is inevitable that some will want to invest that money in property and become buy to let landlords; there is a good feeling about being able to actually see your investment in bricks and mortar as you walk or drive past it! Typically in the Christchurch and Highcliffe area investing in property will give you a return of c4% on your capital dependant on funding. Whilst this may not seem a great return, it is worth noting that some property prices in the area have risen by as much as 30% since 2004, there is of course no guarantee that this will happen again but generally bricks and mortar has always been a sound investment in the UK. It is also estimated that up to one million more renters will be looking for homes in the next five years - adding to a rental market that has already doubled in the past 20 years and is expected to double again over the next two decades.

telling a landlord not to buy something that they may have set their heart on! We advise on the type of property to buy, the likely rent you will achieve and what sort of tenant you are likely to attract. Sales prices have started to show signs of decreasing so now could be a good time to invest in your buy to let property! Belvoir is now the only dedicated letting agent in Christchurch, all the other agents also sell property, ask yourself the question is the agent selling that house working for me as a landlord or looking to earn a fee from the seller of the property. At Belvoir Christchurch there is no such conflict we also offer free pre-purchase advice, just call us or drop into our offices at 22a Bargates. Jeremy Clarke, Belvoir 01202 588920

At Belvoir Christchurch we believe that we give good sound advice to anyone looking to buy a property as an investment; we will be honest with you and sometimes that means

An English Mum New year, a fresh 365 days to accomplish new goals, make resolutions and see what 2015 will have in store for everyone. I LOVE to make my resolution list, it helps Natasha me have my targets to aim for and encourages me to try and do as many as possible in those 52 weeks. This year, my resolutions have lots to do with our town, I’m planning on visiting our year round Monday market more often with it’s fresh produce and it is a lovely trip with my children. Also to use our newly refurbished library, that have free weekly story telling sessions for children. Volunteering is also on my list; it’s great chicken soup for the soul, wonderful to be able to help others and introduces you to a wealth of new people, as well as great experience for future job opportunities. Like most, days are busy for our family, but I’m hoping to help Contact The Elderly, who ask for people to host afternoon tea at their home just once a year for up to six elderly people in Christchurch, what could be easier? Another note on the list is to make more use of our local children’s centre in Christchurch. They run several classes a week from messy playtime and running adult workshops in baby massage. They run a ‘dad’s club’ fortnightly, a toy library and are also looking for volunteers to help in their crèche or administration duties. Whatever 2015 will hold in store for you, go at it full blazing, there’s so much on our doorstep, so get writing your list! Happy New Year!

Mudeford Men’s Club Have a Heart The club give away thousands of pounds to charities every year. They work tirelessly for the good of local clubs and organisations. Members were there to witness the presentation of a cheque for over £7,000 handed personally to Neal Williams of Macmillan Caring Locally, from Christchurch Hospital. The fundraising for 2014, not including December, so far has been for the RNLI, Help for Heroes, Remap, Zoe’s Wish, Christchurch Life Saving Club, Scarf and of course Macmillan Caring Locally. Mudeford Men’s Club have a long history. It began in 1927 and was started by the local fishermen hiring a room in the Stanpit village hall. Later, the members built their own club which now stands opposite the same hall. A Mrs Wiggins who had helped in creating the club, back in 1927 was invited to attend to the opening night. She was quoted as saying ‘My only regret is that I am not one of you, because I should like to be a member.’ Today ladies are full members and take an active role in the day to day running of the club. Liz Westall is the First Lady on the Committee, one of the entertainment crew,

also secretary for the same village hall, so keeping that historical connection. Some members of the club are glad to help before and at events. On the day of an event, many of them come early to help set up the various stalls. BBQ’s usually goes well even though this summer lent itself more to ice creams that was equally enjoyed. The club appreciates the hard work of the members and demonstrated this by holding a ‘thank you’ evening, putting on entertainment with a buffet. So a caring club all round. They have annual events like, Children’s Christmas party, pantomime trip, New Years Eve party, Dinner and Dance night, Ladies Night and many more. If you would like to join Mudeford Men’s Club they have a website or telephone the club on 01202 482928 or for secretary 01202 477689.

Garden View - January drawer (presumably they had been stuck to a box of cereal at some stage). I diligently followed the instructions for sowing and placed them on top of my wardrobe (I’m not quite sure why I did that). What happened next really was a miracle. They germinated! It was hard to believe that the old seed, uneven layer of compost, wardrobe location and over watered soil, produced a rash of new seedlings. It wasn’t long before they had grown to around 2 inches high and bent towards the light, narrowly avoiding the artex ceiling!

Seeds of Change How many seeds have you eaten today? Probably more than you realise. As a nation, we consume tons of them every day and whether they are ground to make our bread, mushed to accompany our chips or sprinkled on our burger bun, seeds play an important role in our diet … as well as in our garden! Most of the seed heads that were left over from autumn have now fallen over, disintegrated, or been eaten by hungry birds, so as part of my ‘outdoor housework’ I’m cutting them down to ground level before the new growth begins to emerge next month. The stately seed heads of Stipa gigantea looked fantastic for such a long period of time, as did the erect stems of Calamagrostis ‘Karl Forester’, but even these have been defeated by the wind. It may be cold outside, but now is the perfect time for planning what to grow this year, from seed of course! Over recent years the popularity of growing your own vegetables has meant that veg seed sales have overtaken those of traditional flowers, but you really can’t beat the satisfaction of plants from seed. The first plants I ever grew were Snap Dragons. I was fifteen, and I found the packet in the back of a

50 • Christchurch Eye • January 2015

I potted them on and they produced the most beautiful range of colours all summer long, and that was the moment I became hooked on gardening. It wasn’t really a surprise that they germinated, as that’s what seeds are designed to do. They can survive in their dormant state for years, and because there are often more seeds per packet than you know what to do with, I always sow just a few more than I need and return the rest to a sealed container in the fridge. Stored like this they keep for years. To give them the best start in life, most seeds require just a tray of compost and some warmth. Large seeds should be covered over with compost, but small seeds left uncovered as they often don’t have enough energy to push new leaves through the soil. Prick out singly once large enough to handle and grow on somewhere frost-free, before gradually hardening off ready for life outdoors. Until next time, happy winter gardening. Lee Bestall

Teen Column Happy New Year!!! Goodbye 2014 and hello 2015. Have you made a New Year’s resolution? Mine is to increase my fitness as it will help me a lot in Laura P.E. Did you know some of the most popular New Year’s resolutions are to spend less time on social networks, to read more and to spend more time with family? I am slightly apprehensive about this year as the hard work really starts at school, and with the first piece of English coursework already done, which is a slight weight off my shoulders; I know I have lots of assessments and coursework to go. I just hope they are straight forward and easy! I would like to thank my English teacher for the help she gave me and the rest of my class to get through our very first GCSE English assessment. Well Christmas maybe over but there is still plenty of things for you to do and see in Christchurch. This time of year Druitt gardens has lots of lovely changes. The leaves have fallen off the trees and the low winter sun creates a perfect glow amongst the branches. It is a nice spot to meet up with friends and my best friends and I regularly go there. There is always a nice flow of people walking through with their dogs and families. During winter, I like to stay warm so if I am out in town and are feeling chilly I pop into Indulge Yourself on Christchurch high street. With their friendly staff and hot drinks for reasonable prices, they make my friends, family and myself feel very welcome. If you are feeling a bit peckish they have a wide range of beautiful cakes too!

Adopt a Pet I’m Noah a 4 year old, gorgeous brindle greyhound. I’m 28 inches to the shoulder, so perfect for those not so bendy people to stroke me! I’ve hung up my racing shoes as I Noah just wasn’t fast enough anymore. I would make a great family pet. I walk really well on the lead and have been fine with all other dogs I’ve met to date. I could live with children or with another dog and can’t wait for an owner to call my own to take me on lots of nice walks.
