I can’t believe it’s October already! This year really is whizzing by fast it seems. I searched the Internet for interesting dates in October and it seems the US have designated the month to be National Pizza Month! So I thought why not step out of my comfort zone of baking cakes and try cooking a pizza when I stumbled across a great recipe that I thought was worth sharing with you all. Why not turn to page 35 and give it a try yourself? Totally Locally Christchurch are holding another Fiver Fest Fortnight from the 26th October, flick over to page 5 to find out more of how important it is that we try and spend as much as we can within local independent businesses to boost our local economy. Don’t forget to move your clocks backward one hour on Sunday 27th October and a Happy Halloween to you all.

’m Neipher, a pretty Whippet cross German Shephard girl. I’m 3 ½ years old and 24 year inches to the shoulder. I’m the perfect houseguest as I’m clean and quiet. I’m happy to be left alone when required, but I could live with another dog. I get on with everyone, including children of all sizes. I’m very obedient as I’ve been to training classes, but my recall still needs a bit of work! I’ve had a tough life so far, but I am finally one very happy dog who loves cuddles and treats. It’s Fiver Fest Fortnight time for Christchurch again!
T
he 26th of October sees the second Fiver Fest Fortnight launch for Totally Locally Christchurch (TLC), the shop local campaign run by volunteers from within the local area. The campaign has been initiated to spread the important message of shopping locally and what a big difference just spending a few pounds can actually make. If every adult in Christchurch (all of BH23) tweaked their shopping habits just slightly and spent just £5 of their weekly spend in local independent shops, it would be worth an extra £8.2 million (at least!) per year going into our local economy. This would mean more jobs, better facilities and a nicer place for us all to live. Makes you think doesn’t it? Totally Locally has had a big impact on other towns that have run the campaign. TLC are confident that it can do the same for Christchurch and Highcliffe with Fiver Fest Fortnights being one way to pass on the message of shopping locally and its benefits to everyone. “Totally Locally isn’t anti-supermarket or anti-internet”, said Totally Locally founder, Chris Sands. “There is a place for all these things in our lives. It’s just highlighting how a small change in spending habits can make a huge change to Christchurch and Highcliffe. We have a choice to make the place we live that little bit better by just diverting £5 of our weekly spend back into our local economy. And everyone wants their town to be great, don’t they?!”. Totally Locally Campaign was released as a free kit for towns to download and use in 2012, after demand for it became so huge that the Totally Locally Team had to create a way for anyone to be able to use. Totally Locally is a multi award winning campaign that has a proven record of helping towns to re-assess themselves and work together. Totally Locally is a social enterprise and is based in Sowerby Bridge, West Yorkshire, UK. TLC holds two Fiver Fest Fortnights per year with each one growing bigger and better. Look out for signs in shop windows to see who is taking part this Fiver Fest Fortnight to grab yourself a bargain! Offers are also posted on the website wwwtotallylocallychristchurch.co.uk Numberworks 2013-d.pdf 1 14/08/2013 11:40:33

The Lepers of Christchurch
D
uring the second half of the 12th century leprosy became increasingly common throughout Europe. To combat this perceived threat to public health the Church Council advised that lepers, who had previously been permitted to live discreetly within their community, should be isolated from the healthy population as instructed in the Bible. This began a major phase of hospital building, with over 200 constructed throughout England by the end of the 13th century. To cater for the lepers of Christchurch an isolation hospital was established a safe distance outside the walled town, beyond what is now the Barrack Road Recreation Ground in the vicinity of Magdalen Lane. (Picture: 14th century depiction of an ulcerating lazar on crutches and a leper with bandaged hands, a begging bowl and warning rattle, arriving at a hospital.) Like many of the hospitals established at that time it was dedicated to St Mary Magdalen, the female disciple Jesus had cured of ‘evil spirits and infirmities’. Operating on monastic principles, the Hospital probably consisted of a stone-built chapel and dormitory wards where the inmates could receive both physical and spiritual welfare. The only reference to the Hospital in the 14th century Christchurch Priory Cartulary indicates that it was run by its own Prior independently of Christchurch Priory. Funding for the Hospital came from the charitable endowments of generous benefactors, the earliest known being that of John de Warham, who in 1317 donated an acre of arable land adjacent to the Hospital (on what would become the Recreation Ground) for the benefit of ‘the lepers and other sick therein’. A spate of similar donations followed the Back Death, a bubonic plague that swept through the country in 1349-50. Although a procurator was later appointed to collect alms throughout the kingdom, the Hospital continued to derive much of its income from the rents of its local tenants. Surviving leases reveal that it had properties in Holdenhurst, Portfield, Bargates, and

a plot backing onto the castle ditch in Church Street (now occupied by Cheese & Alfies café bistro). After King Henry VIII closed down the country’s monastic institutions – with Christchurch Priory being surrendered to the King’s Commissioners in 1539 - the responsibility for the Hospital fell to the Mayor and Burgesses (self-elected town councillors). In 1699 it was reported that no lepers had been admitted to the Hospital for many years. Nevertheless, the Mayor and Burgesses agreed that the Hospital’s income should continue to be used for charitable purposes and from that date the Hospital Master was directed to aid the poor of Christchurch in the absence of any lepers. It seems likely that the unused Hospital buildings fell into disrepair at about that time. By the 19th century most of the aid was being provided in the form of distributed bread, though this was later replaced by financial payments. In 1847 the former Hospital site was leased to local architect John Holloway on the condition that he built a new house – this has since been replaced by a block of flats. In 1886 the affairs of the Hospital were transferred to the Charity Commissioners and subsequently administered by trustees. Today, the Hospital of St Mary Magdalen continues to assist the sick or needy of Christchurch as a registered charity providing aid to residents living within the Borough. It must surely be one of the oldest continuously operating charities in the country!
The present-day charity continues to provide assistance to Christchurch people in need. It can be supported by sending a donation cheque, made payable to ‘Hospital of St Mary Magdalen’, c/o East Quartleys, 2 Bridge Street, Christchurch, BH23 1EB. Further details about the charity (No 236722) can be found on the Charity Commission website: www.charitycommission.gov.uk

The first day of shooting was on a sunny day at the beginning of September in the lovely surroundings of the Bowls Pavilion of the Kings Arms when the one hundred shortlisted applicants were whittled down to twenty. Each successful applicant is being placed in established Christchurch businesses for 6 to 8 weeks of work experience under the guidance of an older mentor within the company. There is a wide cross-section of local businesses involved, both large and small and many of which are well known local names. All of us who are participating have slight nerves over how the chosen candidates are going to turn out and the way in which the editing might portray our respective businesses, but I am hopeful the overall image will be of an active town and an energetic business community. After the humorous Top Gear portrayal of the area as a place full of geriatrics, I hope that this, together with the recent National Statistics Research finding that Christchurch is the most affluent sea-side town in the country, will exhibit us in a more realistic light. The BBC3 series is likely to be shown in January next year and has a current working title of “New Blood Old Town”. Whilst I doubt it will do for Christchurch what “Broadchurch” did for West Bay, every little helps.

Wellbeing Matters
Welcome to
Happy Days
CONFIDENCE FOR KIDS As parents we want our children to feel relaxed, confident and able to cope with any number of challenging situations. Being a child is tough! It isn’t easy doing the right thing, learning and keeping to what others expect of you, understanding who you are and what’s important to you and making the right decisions, let alone fitting in with your peers or standing up for yourself and expressing your needs or ideas.
Lisa
At times children may feel at odds with everyone and everything as they wrestle with endless ‘musts’ and ‘shoulds’. Their own feelings may seem forbidden to them and this can lead to irrational phobias, stammering, bedwetting, anxiety, aggression, sleeping problems, self harm and eating disorders. My aim is always to empower children to discover a resourcefulness that helps them to develop personally and that enhances their wellbeing. I offer one2one sessions to children and parents for particular concerns. Newly settled in the area, I am delighted to introduce ‘Being ME!’ – A Confidence Building and Life Skills Programme held in small groups for kids aged 7+. It aims to equip kids with some personal and social strategies so that they feel more comfortable being themselves. As a parent, you are in the best position to give your child a most precious lifelong gift – the gift of self esteem. Your gift to your child is just a phone call away.

Saxon Square Shopping Centre crowns Granny and Grandad of the Year
O
ne fabulous granny and one fantastic granddad will celebrate National Grandparent’s Day in luxury with a selection of treats from Saxon Square Shopping Centre after being crowned Grandparents of the Year. Una Towers and John Towers from Poole, Dorset, were nominated by their daughter in law Debbie on behalf of their 14 month year old grandson Jake, to win the prestigious title. The couple was chosen for their dedication to their grandchildren. Una and John look after Jake while his parents work full-time, whilst also being handy around the house and generally being kind and generous. They also take care of his cousin to give rest bite to his un-well aunt.
Una & John at Th e Bay Tree
Upon hearing the news that they had won, Una said “We are so pleased to have been named Grandparents of the Year. Being a grandparent is an extremely rewarding and special role and we are always so proud of our grandchildren. It’s lovely to be able to celebrate Grandparent’s day knowing that they are proud of us.” The grandparents enjoyed an afternoon of shopping and dining courtesy of the Centre, followed by a relaxing treatment from The Bay Tree Health Store and Therapy Centre and a pedicure at Harbour Beauty. National Grandparent’s Day (06 October 2013) is a holiday established by Age Concern in 1990 to recognise the hard work and support grandparents give all year round. The competition gave grandchildren the opportunity to explain in 300 words why their grandparents were the best.

Bring on autumn cheer Red, orange and brown would be traditional colours associated with October and I predict that 2013 will be no different. Personally, being able to Grace dig out the woolly jumpers and cashmere scarves brings with it a building excitement for me. The excitement of Halloween, the crunch of rusty leaf under foot, of reading by a roaring fire, the cold freshness surrounding the air that only Autumn could achieve and ultimately the build up to Christmas! For many parents Halloween brings with it the annual trip down to Peeks party store to renew the outgrown Dracula or Spiderman costumes, only to replace them with the newest witch or zombie ensemble. However, for the children of Christchurch it’s the only time of the year, apart from April Fools, where tricking their parents is not entirely out of line. From jumping out from behind curtains armed with plastic fangs to badgering for endless amounts of sugary sweeties, I’m afraid to say is not totally against the rules! However, pumpkin carving activities can be enjoyable for the whole family. It would be fantastic if this October Christchurch could compete in manifesting some of its wackiest pumpkin designs yet. The sky is the limit! I shall have to start brainstorming for my design this year. Moving on from the festive of Halloween cheers, this time of year is excellent for simply sitting with a cup of tea and a few digestive biscuits to enjoy the tranquillity of Christchurch after all the busy holiday makers have departed for the meantime. As nature undergoes its annual change from summer daises to undressed trees and holly bushes, appreciate the magic atmosphere we are surrounded in for a few short months of the year. Bring on autumn cheer.

Update on Duitt Hall
I
n April, Druitt Hall Association Ltd (DHAL) submitted its outline planning application for a replacement Community Hall, largely on the site of the current Druitt Hall but set back slightly to open the view of the Gardens from the High Street. DHAL’s ongoing Public Consultation to hear views of the community resulted in overwhelming public endorsement-- including over 730 letters of support Druitt Hall Birthday Celebrations written to the Council from people, organisations, and businesses who want the hall rebuilt on its current site. This is a very close level walk from bus stops, promoting equal public access by older people, people with restricted mobility and people on limited incomes. The Council’s Planning Committee voted its approval in June. Having talked to user groups and Council Officers, a Business Plan designed to meet both the needs of the community and also satisfy the Council has been submitted. It details the refurbishment and running of the current hall for up to 2 years, and the planning, building and running of the new hall. DHAL is convinced that the hall will have the best chance of success on its present site, where it has worked for the community for the past 60 years and will help to revitalise the High Street, increasing footfall in the Town Centre. The Hall will link the Library, the High Street, the Regent and the Gardens to create a Town Centre cultural hub. DHAL hopes the 25 September Resources Committee will give the Plan the go-ahead! dhal@live.co.uk

O
ctober is a funny old month, marooned in between the heady days of summer and the excitement leading up to Christmas - nothing much happens! I deliberately choose not to celebrate the now ridiculously over-hyped Rachel festival of halloween due to both my religious beliefs and a strict aversion to the colour orange. In lieu of this, I thought I’d research what I could celebrate instead.
I quite like the idea of ‘National Pizza Month’, which appears to have been incepted, unsurprisingly, by a Pizza outlet, although ‘National Popcorn Popping Month’ sounds much more fun! If Wikipedia is to be believed it is also ‘National Squirrel Awareness month’. Yes, dear reader, squirrels. I’m pretty certain I’ve been aware of squirrels for quite some time, although for any blissfully unaware citizens I suggest a quick walk around Christchurch Priory would suffice, rather than dedicating a whole month to it. October also hosts ‘Mole Day’ which apparently is something to do with chemistry and nothing to do with small, poorly sighted burrowing mammals. If it were it would make much more sense, as it is also ‘World Sight Day’ during October. ‘Apple Day’ sounds far too healthy, and whilst I got quite excited at the idea of the USA’s ‘National Sausage Month’ my enthusiasm was soon quashed when I discovered this occurs in September in the UK. Bother, missed it. On further investigation, however, I have found something that is worth supporting; October is Breast Cancer Awareness Month. Having recently lost a friend to this evil disease this seems a most appropriate cause to join in with. ‘Pink Fridays’ will be taking place throughout the month where you can dress pink, eat pink, party pink or even work pink all to raise money for this worthwhile charity. Why not check out breastcancercare.org.uk to see what else you can do to raise a few pounds? And pink is a much better colour than orange! An English Mum x

By collecting, storing and sorting books no longer wanted in this country and getting them shipped across to where they are wanted and needed. Paul and his team locked themselves away in his garage and sorted out a “few booksâ€?, over 22 Boxes in the last consignment alone, which added to the 19 boxes previously sent. About 4,000 books, enough in fact to open 4 Libraries! Whilst we are all very sceptical of seeing benefits going overseas we all recognise the need that is there. Sophie Dawes - Bar & Restaurant Review
Nestled behind Ye Olde George Inn, across the quirky cobbled courtyard you’ll find Dorset Piddle Brewery’s new Bar & Parlour, The Sophie Dawes. We were invited along to their opening night recently to find out a bit more about this hidden treasure, here in Christchurch. The bar/restaurant itself is modern yet rustic, quaint and warm. Friendly bar staff immediately set about making sure we were going to enjoy our evening by warmly greeting us and asking if we’d like to begin our evening with a few choices from the cocktail menu (ahem, yes, a few!), I chose the classic cocktail ‘Cosmopolitan’ - vodka, Cointreau and cranberry with a dash of lime. Yum! These certainly went down a treat while we sat and enjoyed the relaxed and happy atmosphere of the bar. Tonight there are many groups having a fun night out (such as ourselves) and also couples enjoying a romantic meal, this place seems to suit all occasions and there is a real good buzz about the place. Dorset Piddle Brewery not only know their ales but seem to have a vast knowledge on many wines offering a great choice guaranteed to please most palates. The food that we saw arriving to the diners’ tables looked amazing. Tom, the manager, who was also going out of his way to make sure that everyone was having a good time, asked if we’d like to come along on the Sunday and try out the carvery. Who am I to turn down a free meal? We went along on the Sunday to try out said carvery. Again, we were warmly greeted whilst being shown to our table. There were three meats to choose from – beef, pork and turkey during our visit – and a huge selection of vegetables. On approaching the carvery table, diners are given a hot plate with the meats of their choice (all three in my case!) and the opportunity to pile their plates high with everything else including my favourite ‘pigs in blankets’. The selection when we visited included sprouts, carrots, roast potatoes, Yorkshire puddings, leeks in cheese sauce, cauliflower cheese, broccoli and gravy. The meats were tender and juicy and the vegetables perfectly cooked and regularly topped up by kitchen staff. The waiting staff seemed very attentive toward all the customers; nothing seemed to be too much for them. The main menu looked to be full of choice and offered a great selection from traditional pub food such as pie and chips to tuna steaks as well as salads including salmon, goat’s cheese and duck. They even offer a meal choice for your four legged friends! The Sophie Dawes is definitely worth a visit if you’re in the area but judging from the lack of vacant tables I’d make sure you book ahead, good value food of this quality is hard to find. 01202 479383

Ingredients 750ml (1¼ pint) strong vegetable stock 175g (6oz) instant polenta (dry) 40g (1½oz) freshly grated Parmesan cheese 75g (3oz) tomato purée 1½tbsp extra virgin olive oil 1½tsp dried oregano 125g ball buffalo mozzerella, torn into pieces 200g (7oz) vegetable antipasti (we used a mixture of grilled artichokes, roasted peppers and sunblush tomatoes) Large handful rocket leaves, to garnish Preparation method
JT’s BLINDS
Preheat oven to 220°C (200°C fan) mark 7. Line a large baking sheet with baking parchment. Put the stock in a large pan, bring to the boil and stir in the polenta. Simmer for 5min, stirring continuously (be careful – it may bubble volcanically!), until the mixture thickens. Stir in the Parmesan and lots of seasoning, then tip the mixture on to the prepared tray and spread to make a circle 30.5cm (12in) across. Leave to cool while you prepare the toppings.
A local company with 25 years experience, JT’s Blinds offer a complete service
In a small bowl, stir together the tomato purée, oil and oregano with 1tbsp water to make a smooth sauce. Spread evenly over the polenta base leaving a 2cm (3/4in) border.
ROLLER BLINDS - VENETIANS VERTICALS - WOODEN VENETIANS ROMAN BLINDS - REPAIR SERVICE
Scatter over the mozzarella and antipasti and cook in the oven for 15min or until the cheese is bubbling and golden. Scatter over the rocket leaves, cut into wedges and serve.

Mudeford Wood Community Centre This summer saw refurbishment works get underway at Mudeford Wood Community Centre to extend and refit the kitchen. Generous grants from the Talbot Village Trust, Christchurch Borough Council, SAMRA and Hall and Woodhouse Brewers, alongside fundraising efforts of Trustees and volunteers, made this project a reality. Local architects, Aspire Christchurch, project managed the build at their expense, so a special thanks goes to them and to Spectrum Property Care, whose expertise and advice ensured the project got off the ground. Since taking over the management of the Centre in April 2012, Mudeford Wood Community Trust’s vision has been to improve the facilities. The kitchen was the first step, and fundraising efforts continue to ensure that further major refurbishment plans are realised in the near future. June saw the Centre’s hugely successful second annual Family Fun Day which raised over ÂŁ1,200, followed in September by the annual Family Fun Dog Show. The Trust is also committed to providing access to sporting activities for local youngsters. This summer saw the first ‘Summer School’ open to children aged 4 to 13. Sessions were led by Dan Pryke, sports degree student and experienced coach, and included mixed sports, football, handball and various active games. Specialist leaders also assisted, allowing children to experience yoga, street dancing and Arts and Crafts. The holiday club, renamed ‘Mudeford Wood Active Kids’, will be run each school holiday. For details of the October half-term programme visit www.mudefordwoodcommunitycentre.co.uk or call 01425 272084.

A message from your LOCAL Age Concern
Y
ou’ve seen our shops but do you know what we do with the funds we raise?
We provide valuable services to the older people of Christchurch via our Befriending and Information and Advice Services. We also support 5 Friendship Groups across the area and provide a Transport Service. We would not be able to do any of this without our valuable team of volunteers; if you feel able to commit 4 hours a week we will look to match your skills with our opportunities available. Could you be an information and advice worker, office assistant, minibus driver or assistant; a befriender, fundraiser or retail assistant? Whatever your strengths and experience Age Concern Christchurch would like to hear from you. We know that volunteering can be a powerful tool to both help people change their lives for the better or maintain a healthy mental wellbeing. “Volunteering can increase volunteers’ longevity, improve their mental health, keep them fitter, and enable them to cope better with illness when it occurs. Volunteering also has a positive impact on a range of factors affecting health service users including their self-esteem, disease management, adoption of healthy behaviours, compliance with medical treatment and relationships with health care professional”. If you would like to learn more, please phone 01202 488311, or e-mail contact@ageconcernchristchurch.org.uk Apply online at http://www.ageconcernchristchurch.org.uk/working-with-us/volunteering

Make a difference by helping to raise cash for Marie Curie
M
arie Curie is calling on the local community to help make a difference – by getting involved with the new Christchurch and Highcliffe fundraising group. Fundraising Groups play a very important role in the charity, helping to ensure that Marie Curie nurses can provide free care to sufferers of terminal cancer and other illnesses, within the comfort of their own home. A number of local volunteers have already put their hands up for the proposed group, but the group are still seeking further members. Local residents and supporters of the charity are invited to come along to a launch party for the group, which is to be held in October (venue and date tbc). The Christchurch and Highcliffe Fundraising Group will be aiming to fundraise for Marie Curie by supporting their main campaigns; The Great Daffodil Appeal collections during February & March and the Blooming Great Tea Party throughout the Summer months as well as organising local events such as quiz evenings. The Fundraising Group will in turn also help raise awareness of the Marie Curie Nursing services locally. Marie Curie Cancer Care provides nursing care, enabling terminally ill patients to be cared for in the comfort of their own homes. If you would like to be a member of this exciting new fundraising group or you would like to donate a couple of hours to assist the group with their fundraising activities, then please contact Dorset Community Fundraiser, Amy Salmon, on 01884 703537.

“I have been very impressed by the large number of people who have commented on a recent article of mine in the Christchurch Eye. Whilst I have been President of the Christchurch Chamber of Trade and Commerce, I have often found my comments mentioned in the local papers, but I cannot remember having as much feedback as I have had from the Eye article. It is clearly widely read.”

“In my experience, advertising can be a very” hit and miss” affair. However, since starting to advertise with Christchurch Eye, I’ve been blessed with an absolutely superb response! I have gained new clients both for my Private Practice AND for my Self-Hypnosis Workshops. Also, every client who has come to me has without fail said how much they enjoy (and look forward to) reading Christchurch Eye and what a superb local community-focussed publication it is. Moreover, Cheryl and her team are a delight to work with. No wonder then that Christchurch Eye is now my NUMBER ONE choice for any local marketing I do.” Derek Palmer, Creative-Plane Hypnotherapy

Christchurch Priory Choir extends an open invitation to all Music plays a huge part in the life of Christchurch Priory, and I would like to extend an open invitation to you to join us in our latest project. The Priory Choirs, totalling some 50+ skilled singers, will be recording a new CD of hymns at the beginning of October. For the last of the nights of recording, we will be inviting people to join us in recording some hymns together with our boys, girls and gentlemen of the choir. I wonder if you’ve watched Songs of Praise on the TV, and seen the uplifting effect of a large number of people singing with heart and voice: well, this is your chance to experience it live! If you would like to be part of it and feature on the CD, come along on Saturday 5th October. You will need to arrive at the Priory at 6.15pm, at which time the recording session will pause and the doors open to let everyone in, and will resume at 6.30pm. We expect to finish at around 7.45pm, at which point everyone will be able to quench the thirst they have worked up with refreshments! Because of the nature of a recording session, please note that it is not suitable for children under 8 years old, nor for anyone who is unable to maintain the necessary quiet when they are not singing! Do come along – it’s quite hard work, but very rewarding! If you have any questions, you can ring the Vestry on 01202 485804 or email music@christchurchpriory.org. Hugh Morris, Director of Music, Christchurch Priory.
