editor’s letter
I
can’t believe it’s September already. Yet again, the year seems to be whizzing by. As I write, the air is getting a little chillier but the sun is still shining after such a fantastic summer, which Cheryl we’ve been very fortunate to have these last couple of months here in Christchurch. I have been lucky enough to be able to appreciate a great deal of it myself having recently taken my Powerboat course with John Haynes, our ‘On the Water’ columnist, and also trying my hand at Paddleboarding over at Mudeford Quay with Shoresports. I’ve very much enjoyed both of these water pursuits and hope to continue with them for a few weeks yet, so fingers crossed for a little more of this great sunshine. I hope you too, are getting out and about lots yourselves. I know time is so limited these days as we all work so very hard to keep pushing ourselves out of this recession, but it’s great to see so many of you out there, not only on the water but also enjoying all our other fabulous local attractions. It’s good to know that we still haven’t forgotten how to have fun and achieve a good work/life balance with us being so lucky to live in such a beautiful part of the country. All the best until next month, Cheryl Cheryl Dennett Editor & Publisher
Congratulations to Alison Duffy & Mr Gilbert for winning our July competitions!

Christchurch resident celebrates 101 years young at care home
S
taff and residents at Care South’s Queensmead care home in Christchurch recently held a very special celebration, to mark resident Muriel Rae’s milestone 101st birthday. Bouquets of flowers flooded into the home from Muriel’s many family and friends and her room was filled with cards. She celebrated with a birthday lunch with some of her closest friends – one of whom travelled all the way down from London that morning to celebrate with her. At Queensmead, Muriel enjoys sitting in the sun, chatting with her friends and popping into town to do some shopping – and to treat herself to her favourite sweet milky coffee and chocolate pastry.
One of Muriel’s friends baked her a special birthday cake, beautifully decorated with pink icing roses, which she enjoyed with her fellow residents during afternoon tea. She finished the day with one of her favourite snacks – a cup of tea with chocolate Turkish Delight.
Janine May, Home Manager at Queensmead, said: “We were delighted to be able to celebrate Muriel’s special day with her. Muriel is a popular resident, with lots of friends at the home, and is a real character. She’s always very glamorous and looked especially lovely on her birthday. When asked about her secret to long life, Muriel replies that a good face cream and plenty of sunshine work wonders!”
Born in 1913 in Mountain Ash, Wales, Muriel moved to London to work in service at the age of 14. She moved to Bournemouth a few years later to work as a waitress in a local hotel with her aunt, and went on to run a boarding house on Holdenhurst Road. She worked there until she retired, when she moved to Highcliffe to make the most of the sunshine!

T
he Saxon Square multimillion pound makeover has been completed and the recent re-launch on a gloriously sunny day showed the improvements in a excellent light.
Peter What is more, the work on the new Travelodge above the shops is also completed, bringing back into use a large area of wasted town centre space which has lain empty for over twenty years. With 68 rooms and no onsite restaurant, the new hotel will not only bring visitors but more business to our town centre cafés and eateries. With the 2 hours for £1 parking in full effect, the disruptive work finished and a sunny Summer, one hopes that the town centre is on track to take full advantage. The lack of empty shops both in Saxon Square and the High Street is an excellent sign of a healthy town. So is Christchurch town centre re-development all sorted now?

No, not at all. With little local publicity, a significant five acre site comprising the police station, the old magistrate’s court and the court and pit site car parks in Bargates is now being marketed for sale and redevelopment. It is not the first time development of this site has been mooted, but the diverse owners of the site have finally reached agreement and “invitations for expressions of interest” have been sought. The site has vast potential. A mixed use to include residential (both general housing to flats for the elderly) through leisure facilities to some retail is what is anticipated. However, anything could happen. Being a commercial undertaking, it is likely to be sometime before any firm plans are announced publically. Whatever the proposal, it is going to have far reaching implications for the town centre and, if handled well, there is an exciting opportunity for great improvement.

A
s September brings along the new school year, I thought I’d share a few of the more, ahem, ‘interesting’ questions I’ve been asked while helping in school Food Technology classes over the last few years: 1. ‘Is this an oven?’
Rachel
Answer I would have liked to have given:— ‘No, it’s an enchanted cupboard where we put the ingredients. You turn the magic dial, say ‘abra-cake-us-make-us’, wait 20 minutes, and when you next open it up, it’s turned into a cake!’
Local Domestic Cleaning Company
A Beautiful Clean
Actual answer given: ‘Yes, it’s an oven.’
Time for a Spring Clean!
2. ‘Miss, do I get my ingredients out of the fridge?’
One off clean, clean and tidy or a regular booking
Me: taps nails, bites tongue, fights off desperate urge to reply something about either food preparing itself whilst locked in small dark cold cupboard, or suggesting child needs to climb into said cupboard to prepare said food.
Please contact us:
07788 454487 01202 477812 10% Discount for First Clean
Actual answer given: ‘Yes, you get them out of the fridge.’ 3. Follow up question from the same child: ‘Do I use them?’ Me: long pause Pinches self to make sure I’m not dreaming. Quick glance round room confirms that all other students are taking food out of fridges and putting it on worktops, and no singing gnomes or purple elephants are anywhere in sight. Child in front of me seems oblivious to this fact (about the usage of food, not the lack of dream like characters). ‘Yes, you need to use them.’
4. ‘Do we crack the eggs?’
Colin Butchart, Denture Clinician with over 28 years ’ experience working directly to the public.
It’s very hard for someone who tends to veer towards the dark side of sarcasm not to reply, ‘Of course not. Just pop it in whole and the shell will melt in the oven!’ Instead, it’s a deep breath, a tired smile and a resolute ‘Yes, you need to crack the eggs.’
O ering: New Dentures, Relines, Repairs, Home Visits, Easy Parking, Ground Floor Access
Of course, being a lovely helpful person, I know there is no such thing as a silly question, just a silly answer, which I always try very, very, very hard not to give!

On The Water
B
odyboarding is one of the most popular beach watersports worldwide and Christchurch is a great area to get started. You will see many people making their John way to local beaches with a foam bodyboard under their arm or a board bag on their back. The best surf in Christchurch Bay for long rides is at Chewton Bunny, below the Crows Nest car park at Highcliffe. The smaller beach break waves at Steamer Point and Avon Beach are great fun to catch on a summer’s day. Bodyboards or boogie boards are high-density foam boards around one metre in length that are ridden lying down. Bodyboarding technique combines swimming and surfing. To paddle out through the waves you need to kick with short bladed flippers known as fins and paddle hard with your arms. Then turn around and use a few short sharp paddle strokes to catch a wave. It is easy to ride small waves on a bodyboard and the paddling is a good all-round workout. Christchurch lifeguards usually allow bodyboards to be used around swimmers, as they have no sharp edges. Fibreglass surfboards, which have a pointed nose and sharp skegs underwater, should only be used in designated areas away from bathers. September and October are good months for surf on the South Coast, the sea is still warm plus there are fewer bathers. In 1987 we brought the first bodyboards into the UK and Southbourne Beach became a legendary location. Many bodyboarding world champions visited the area to meet local riders and pass on tips. The Christchurch area has developed some great bodyboarders and surfers who travel to ride the best surf breaks around the globe. See you on the water!

Christchurch Rotary
I
recently attended an event that had overnight camping. Well I do like my creature comforts but it did make me think about life in a tent, especially at this time of year with us spending more time out doors. Rotary is all too aware of living in tents via the amazing ShelterBox scheme.
Paul
But what is a ShelterBox ? Basically, a large Green Plastic Box with facilities and provision to ‘survive’. It brings shelter to communities overwhelmed by disaster and humanitarian crises. At our club, Howard Matthews, is our liaison officer and can be seen at various sites and times around the town promoting this amazing idea. So when you are next erecting your tent, remember that somewhere, someone is looking at this as a home for the foreseeable future. Makes you think! You may have seen Christchurch club members, along with other club’s supporting the Children’s Parade from Pier Approach and also at the Festival in Meyrick Park. Members from around the area came together to highlight children at the heart of our communities, also showcasing young talent. From all accounts a great fun day was had by all, with older club members ‘getting down’ with the kids. I know, even I’m cringing, but you get the drift. This all goes on at sleepy old Christchurch club, which it certainly is not, but don’t take my word for it, come and have a look yourself. I look forward to seeing you soon.

Poetry Corner Poetry in the Park by Pam Davies Once again the meadow’s full of humming, buzzing and gentle clicks as ladybirds rest on sticks. They’ve gorged on aphids nervously waiting to perform, still calm, despite and expected storm. Here come ‘The Ladybirds’ red and black formations fill the air as honey bees take great care! Painted Ladies meet Small Tortoiseshells now in gregarious mood after snacking on so, so delicious food! Cabbage Whites rest on rumpled brassicas, Red Admirals and Peacocks enjoy some strange nettle, while Fritillary flutter around an old tin kettle. What a delicate jazzy show ‘The Blues’ perform against a luminous summer sky as The Lulworth Skipper waves goodbye. Before by Tom Murphy I was unhappy before I met you. Sad as a verb with nothing to do. Dull as grapes without a wine press. Fermenting in loneliness. You brought an aura of tenderness. On my agenda now is your caress. Garden View Blooms s from bulb It may seem early to begin planning next year’s spring and summer colour, but it is essential to get bulbs planted this month (with the exception of Tulips which should be planted in November). The history of bulbs can almost be traced back to the beginning of man, when they would most certainly have been used as food. We know that the ancient Egyptians grew onions and that potatoes (technically tubers) have been cultivated in South America for thousands of years. I wonder what these early people would think to the use of our ornamental onions, such as Allium ‘Pinball Wizard’, grown for their show stopping flowers! Most of the usual subjects including Allium bulbs can be planted right now, and range in price from the very cheap tiny bulbs of Allium sphaerocephalon, to the more rare and expensive giant heads of Allium schubertii. Most kinds of Alliums enjoy a position in full sun, but if you have a very dry and shaded border such as that under a large tree, then try Allium ursinum, more commonly known as wild garlic. Its beautiful lush, low growing green foliage makes a great foil for a woodland setting, as well as producing a • Wear gloves when handling, as some are toxic and can mass of white globular flowers borne on cause skin irritations short stems. • Try and buy them loose so you can feel them. Transient tenancies are being replaced by longer-term living solutions
Transient tenancies are being replaced by longer-term living solutions in many areas say the experts at Belvoir... “Long-term tenancies are definitely increasing and we are getting more people staying longer and longer,” says Jeremy Clarke, owner of Belvoir Christchurch. “In fact, at our office tenancy lengths have almost doubled. When we first opened in 2003 people tended to stay in a property for about 18 to 19 months, but my average tenancy now is 33 months.
Jeremy
“Our longest tenancy is a couple who moved into the property in February 2004, so they’ve been with us for more than 10 years. We’ve got tenants who have been in properties for longer than that too which we’ve inherited from other agents along the way.” “I think tenancy lengths are increasing for a combination of reasons,” explains Jeremy. “Rental prices have gone up so people are more cautious about moving - from an affordability point of view a lot of tenants can’t afford to do it. And some tenants will be saving for deposits, which of course takes longer now. “I think in our area there is also a general lack of property available. If you were a tenant in this area you wouldn’t give your notice if you didn’t like where you were because there would be a huge fear that you wouldn’t be able to find an alternative. What we’re finding is that people will have a little look and if there’s nothing out there then they’ll stay for another year rather than putting themselves under pressure.” “Also, we’ve got quite a lot of older people becoming long-term tenants. They’ve chosen to downsize and are keeping hold of the equity from their previous property but want the stability of a long-term home.” “From a tenant’s point of view, long-term tenancies can give long-term security and security is key for many tenants, especially those with children who go to the local schools,” says Jeremy. “Long-term tenancies can have big benefits for a landlord too as there will be no void periods and rent will be paid every month. Also, a smaller turnover of tenants causes less wear and tear to the decor of the property because furniture isn’t being moved in and out on a regular basis.” “Another benefit is the reduced cost of repairs and maintenance. As a landlord you’re not having to go through the property and paint and replace carpets and do all the things you’d normally do at the end of a tenancy - because the tenant’s in situ they’re often happy to live with what they’ve got. “Furthermore, as the length of the tenancy increases the strength of the relationship between the tenant and the agent or landlord often gets stronger too, which is a huge benefit.” An increase in tenancy lengths is affecting housing stock levels, with many rental properties now attracting several potential tenants. Jeremy concludes, “Because of longer-term tenancies there are lower housing stock levels and it’s starving the market completely. The influx of new tenants is thriving but many new landlords are desperately needed and we’re actively seeking additional properties to add to our portfolio.” With a strong rental market and high tenant demand it’s a great time to become a letting agent with Belvoir.

Widow’s Hunt for Distinctive Trophy
C
AN anyone help Mrs Edna Travis of Bournemouth, locate an unusual football trophy her late husband designed in the 1970s and presented to local football teams? Bournemouth Regatta Committee member and a six-a-side football tournament chairman, Michael Phillips-Pitman, designed the trophy with a base which depicts a game in progress with authentic players and goals at each end. On the wooden surround are small brass plaques for the names of the winning teams. The last Edna heard of the trophy’s whereabouts was when it was won by a football team during the Christchurch Carnival week 15 or 16 years ago. Michael was also the manager of Strouden Rangers where his son, Steve, was the captain. For many years the Rangers had made many unsuccessful attempts to win the East Dorset Youth League Cup. In 1979 the team had a successful season, winning many of its matches.
Sadly, Michael died of a heart attack in the spring of that year. Undeterred, Strouden Rangers went on to win the league for the first time. During the final game against Hamworthy, Edna wore an old black cardigan that Michael always wore for luck when managing Rangers. Before the game, the team, in black armbands, stood for two minutes silence as a token of respect to their manager. Michael’s ashes were scattered at the Cherries’ Dean Court ground. Now Michael’s grandson Mikey Phillips-Pitman, 11, who has won medals and trophies in karate and football, would like to find his grandfathers trophy so that he and others would be able to compete for it.

e are very pleased to report that the CCA have now definitely obtained the lease to run Druitt Hall. Previously we were led to believe that the council were not prepared to allow us to go ahead and we felt very strongly that the loss of this hall would be a retrograde step. All towns and villages need a hall, which can provide a necessary amenity for all our citizens to enjoy. We are in the process of renovating the building and anyone who can help in any way will be greatly appreciated. Any business or private person who would be willing to contribute financially or anyone able to spare a few hours to help decorate, etc. In fact, there will be many jobs that need a willing hand to give this important venue a new lease of life.

We are now taking bookings for the hall and should anyone wish to hire it for clubs, meetings or activities etc. The PHONE NUMBER to ring is 07818 724762. Please come along and enjoy the official opening by the Mayor of Christchurch Councillor Mrs. Denise Jones on Saturday 13th September from 11am. The general theme of the day will be the 1950’s as this was when the hall was originally built. It has been an incredible summer and we hope that visitors enjoyed our town and all its amenities. We were a little perturbed by the recent BBC programme that did not portray Christchurch in a true light, yes we have a high percentage of elderly but we have many young people, a letter has been sent requesting that the BBC show this and the assets we have in this town for their enjoyment. The CCA meetings restart on Monday 1st September in Druitt Hall at 7.30pm when we look forward to welcoming our existing and hopefully new members. October meeting will be on Monday 6th. Jam Today... Autumn is the perfect time to start preserving. You can use home grown fruits or those you’ve foraged amongst the hedgerows. Preserving is relatively easy. Once the fruit has been picked, washed and prepared, you just need some simple equipment to turn it into marvellous produce. You can get lots of advice from your local cook shop on what’s required, but some basics are: a large heavy based saucepan, spoons and funnels, a sugar thermometer, containers and jars, lids and labels. The concept of preserving foods has been around since the earliest humans. To survive, ancient man had to harness nature. In frozen climates he froze seal meat on the ice. In tropical climates he dried foods in the sun. Food by its nature begins to spoil the moment it is harvested. So the ability to preserve food enabled ancient man to make roots, and live in one place and form a community. Preservation with the use of honey or sugar was well known to the earliest cultures. It was commonplace for fruits to be kept in honey. In ancient Greece quince was mixed with honey, dried and packed tightly into jars. The Romans cooked the quince and honey producing a solid texture. As there’s not enough sunlight in Northern climates to successfully dry fruits, housewives learned to make preserves, heating the fruit with sugar, and this is the method we know today. Whilst there is no longer a pressing survival reason for preserving, it can be very rewarding. As well as providing delightful food and drink for you to consume, you could also make your preserved fruits into lovely Christmas gifts. There are many possibilities including jams and marmalades,

chutneys and pickles, and beverages such as sloe gin. Many establishments run evening classes which can help you create these and many other fabulous recipes, such as fruit butter or fruit cheese. When preserving, you should use fruits that are sun ripened, as the process will not improve green tasteless fruit. Using fruit that has a high acid content is recommended, as it less likely to harbour bacteria. When filling jars, you should ensure they are hot as temperature drops will increase the likelihood of bacteria forming. For the same reason, always cover your jars straight away and when the jars are cooled, you should recheck the seals and tighten lids to prevent any air entering and causing mould to form. Or you could use a waxed disc of paper and cellophane to act as a cover. Keep your preserves in a cool, dark, dry place. Chutneys and pickles can last for around a year, and fruit liqueurs and fruits in alcohol up to two years. Once opened, store in the fridge and use quickly. By Susan Brookes-Morris
