Welcome

Editor’s Letter

June 2011

to the June edition of Christchurch Eye. This month sees the return of our ‘Day in the Life of...’ feature after many requests! If you know of anyone from a charity or non-profitable organisation that would like to generate a bit of free publicity then do please get in touch. Also this month we have two free tickets to give away for ‘The Funky Little Choir’ who are singing at the Regent Centre who amongst other awards were Regional Winners of BBC 3’s Choir of the Year! The regular Sudoku competition this month offers you the chance to win a pair of tickets to see Desperado - Heart of the Eagles at the Regent Centre. May I say, I cannot stress enough how grateful I am to you for your continued support of local events and businesses who, now more than ever, need our backing in the current financial climate, and I take great pride in your kind, positive feedback and continued delight in Christchurch Eye’s usefulness and professional quality. I’d also like to take this opportunity to thank everyone for all their lovely kind wishes, cards and congrats on the birth of our daughter Siena. Thank you all! Best Wishes,

CHRISTCHURCH & DISTRICT ARTS COUNCIL FESTIVAL OF PERFORMING ARTS Concert & Prize Giving The eighth CADArts Festival of Performing Arts reaches its climax at the Regent Centre in Christchurch on the evening of Sunday 5 June at 7.30 pm with a Gala Final Night Concert. Following extensive heats throughout the Borough of Christchurch at which groups of performers have competed in Youth and Open Classes in Instrumental Music, Singing, Dance and Drama, the finalists in each section will perform in the Gala Concert for the trophies and medals, which will be awarded at the end of the evening. The Festival of Performing Arts was developed from an initial idea by the late Kit Townend, who was the former Managing Director of the Regent Centre and a leading light of CADArts. Kit wanted to promote and encourage local groups by giving their creative talents a public outlet on stage at the Regent. The Festival has allowed these groups to showcase their talents, and many have gone on to appear at events in and around the conurbation as a direct result.

Business Column A NEW NATION OF SHOPKEEPERS? Sadly, nine businesses have closed their doors recently but new ones opening include Topsies, Saxon Square; New and Used Store, Bargates; Julie Made2Measure, Barrack Road; Shake Shack, High Street; Urban Quay, Wick Lane; DDA Signs and Stickers; Rivergate Cars and Nova Mini Market plus Premier Inn, Highcliffe. How can a shop improve its chances of success? At one time a business was passed down through the family, as were the required skills. The English were described by Adam Smith in 1776 as a nation of shopkeepers, but how many of our young people would now consider retail as a career? And if they do, where can they acquire the necessary skills?

The store needs sponsors to ensure the students have something to sell. If you have stock or goods sitting on the shelves they could use, contact Mandy-Jane Payne on 07869 149976 or email: mandy@retailresource.biz As a footnote, results of recent research have shown that retail therapy is good for the health – older people who shop are, apparently, more likely to live longer! Happy Shopping!

Does your child have flat feet? littleSTEPS™ make a big impression with brand leaders footrescue©

Developmental flatfoot is an increasingly common condition affecting children, and as many concerned parents know there is a tendency for health professionals to ignore a child’s flatfoot unless it is severe. Developmental flatfoot often results in some level of disability or discomfort as an adult; as such recognizing this anomaly early will save joints and muscles later in life. A child’s foot can appear flat up until about the age of 2, this is due to a thick layer of baby fat that fills the arch area. Most children begin to walk by 1214 months and many initially walk on their toes. As they begin to master their movements over a few months they begin to walk flat on their feet and by the age of 3 the foot begins to adopt a natural arch. If your child continues to toe walk after this time, or if their arch is severely flat, with an inward bowing of the ankles combined with their feet turning out when they walk, they may have a “developmental flatfoot”. Typically the condition is not painful, but

may lead to postural concerns and poor muscle development. However some children with flexible flat feet may develop foot or limb pain (“growing pains”) along with fatigue, or decreased endurance and balance. Wearing supportive shoes in combination with a foot orthotic can help them. littleSTEPS™ pre-fabricated foot orthoses are specifically designed to improve coordination, balance, posture, strength, and aid in the development of a more stable and functional gait. They provide an affordable alternative to expensive custom foot orthoses while delivering prescription-based correction and they are available through footrescue© at their flagship clinic in Christchurch. (For more information on child foot development or to book a talk or presentation by one of our leading experts contact footrescue© on 01202 483848 or visit our website – see advert below)

Record crowds at Christchurch Food & Wine Festival An estimated seventy thousand people filled the streets of Christchurch for the start of the town’s Food & Wine Festival at the International Food Market. Though rain had hampered the traders setting up stalls on Saturday, the skies cleared for a dry day for visitors to the market before torrential rain swept in as the traders were packing up for the day. Sunday, however, was bright and sunny for most of the day and the crowds of hungry food-lovers were able to take their fill of the delicious offerings on sale at more than 100 stalls in the market in delightful weather. Stall holders reported excellent business, with some of them running out of goods to sell before the market finished. TV chefs Nick Nairn and Peter Gordon performed the opening ceremony alongside Mayor, Cllr Nick Geary, before demonstrating their culinary skills in the Harbour

Hotels Collection demonstration theatre in Saxon Square. Lesley Waters, the Festival’s patron and Andrew Gault, head chef at The Captain’s Club had some well-known local kitchen helpers for their session as the Mayor and the vicar of the Priory church, Chris Mann, took to the stage to take their instructions from the chefs to get chopping, beating and whisking as they fought to win the prize for the best dishes gleaned from the same ingredients. In the end, both came up with such delicious offerings that it was impossible to judge one of them to be the winner and the contest was drawn. The Mayor thanked Mary Reader, President of the Festival, and the committee of organisers, saying: “This has been another marvellous event. Every year the Festival just gets better and better and next year you will have your work cut out to come up with a Festival that could possibly top this one. “I know how much hard work goes into putting the Festival together and you are to be congratulated for an event which is hugely beneficial for the Borough.” 07:30

Local History Councillor Maurice Prichard. The Coronation Oak, now full grown, still stands beside the path opposite the Gin Hatch door.

Coronation Day 1911 This month sees the 100th anniversary of what many consider to be one of Christchurch’s most interesting and beautiful features. Convent Walk was officially opened as a public footpath on Thursday 22nd June 1911 as part of the town’s celebrations for the coronation of King George V and Queen Mary. The idea to create a public footpath beside the millstream in Convent Meadows had been submitted by Councillor William Eaton Burt in 1907. His scheme, which also included the conversion of the oft-flooded Quomps into a public pleasure ground, was already approved when King George V came to the throne in 1910. Local preparations for the coronation began in February 1911, when Mayor Robert Druitt held a public meeting in the Town Hall to discuss what ‘Festivities and Rejoicings’ would be appropriate. However, the celebrations on the longest day of the year did not take place quite as planned. Dark and threatening clouds were already being blown across the sky when Henry Croucher, attired in the robe and cocked hat of a Town Crier, rang his handbell and proclaimed the start of Coronation Day. The Mayor sent a congratulatory telegraph to the King and Queen. He then went to the little lawn next to the Town Hall where, watched by an assembled crowd, he hoisted a flag that had been presented by the Corporation and citizens of Christchurch, New Zealand. The Mayoral party then proceeded to the Castle Street entrance of Convent Walk for the official opening of the new footpath. The Mayor was presented with a silver key with which he ceremonially opened the Gin Hatch door, and the Mayoress used a pair of silver coronation scissors to cut a purple silk ribbon that was stretched across the rustic bridge beyond. The Mayoress then planted a sapling oak tree which had been donated by Purewell-based nurseryman

The Mayor and Mayoress then took part in the grand procession, which paraded through the flag-bedecked town from Mudeford to the High Street, then along Bargates and down Stour Road, before entering the Barrack Road Recreation Ground by the Creedy gateway. It was estimated that the procession was two miles long and involved local dignitaries, over 1500 local schoolchildren, and numerous costumed tableaux. A large proportion of the population either took part or lined both sides of the route to cheerily greet it despite the onset of a drizzling rain. Coronation Day was one of the first major events in Christchurch to be comprehensively recorded by photography. Christchurch photographer George Moss captured the procession from an upstairs window of Square House, which stood on the corner of High Street and Wick Lane, and Boscombe-based George Stanford did the same from the house belonging to Frampton’s brewery, which jutted out into the High Street next to Bow House – and their pictures show that umbrellas were in increasing evidence as the morning progressed. Disappointingly, by lunchtime the drizzle had turned to unremitting rain and the children’s afternoon sports and displays were postponed until the following day. The remainder of the celebrations were either abandoned entirely or postponed until the following Wednesday.

Teen Column Grace Ball has kindly stepped in as our Guest Teen columnist this month whilst Brogan takes a break.... As the famous Jane Austen character Miss Elizabeth Bennett exhibits her love for walking, I too share her pleasure, and as the weather improves, shining a ray of sparkling sunlight over the Priory I continue to use walking more and more as a form of transport. This prompts me to think how fortunate we are to live in our cosy town of Christchurch with no major natural disasters and not crippled directly under the fright of war. This time of year I am thrilled myself, when walking on my passage to or from Twynham School, to hear the rambunctious cries of laughter or to see the different shades of green and colour that sing out of the Summer greenery that occupy our gardens and streets around Christchurch. Thank you Sun for allowing me to walk and enjoy the nature around me without an umbrella.

Grace

I’m looking forward to the thought of rollercoaster rides and spinning tea cups making their annual visit to Christchurch. Last year, very much to my dismay and disappointment, I was abroad at the time of the fair’s Summer time stay. This year I am determined to buy fluffy candyfloss and experience the adrenalin rush as I am thrown around on the twister! I cannot wait to spend this time with my family and friends, and with such beautiful weather what more can we ask for? Grace Ball

Lateral Thinking Lateral thinking puzzles are a hybrid between a brief story and a puzzle. In each puzzle some clues to the scenario are given but they don’t tell the full story. In order to solve the puzzle you need to work out which details are missing. You can solve them alone but it’s more fun with friends.

A DAY IN THE LIFE OF...... A COUNSELLOR AND TRAINER By Sally Tanner I begrudgingly open one eye and look at the clock, hoping it won’t say it’s time for me to get up. I resist the temptation to have ‘just five more minutes’ and slowly and reluctantly raise my body out of bed. The cat loudly demands both breakfast and attention and after accommodating both her requests I organise my own breakfast and experience the wonderfulness of that first cup of coffee of a new day. The coffee, having done its job by bringing me around from my morning stupor, I switch on the laptop to check any emails that may need attention before leaving for the day. Having showered and dressed and given the cat yet more attention, I check my diary for the day and pack my briefcase accordingly. The first ‘hat’ I wear for the day is that of counselling assessor for Dorset Community Counselling Service. The Service offers local charitable organisations the opportunity of providing counselling for their clients which they would not normally have access to either because of finances or their local GP service does not provide this. The waiting times for counselling within a GP surgery can be anything up to 3 months and with a restriction of usually only 6 sessions. I find this incredulous considering over 39 million antidepressant prescriptions are issued each year in the UK and that 1 in 4 of us will experience a mental health problem during our lives. I aim to access clients and match them to an appropriate counsellor within 2 weeks and offer up to 24 counselling sessions. My first port of call for the day is with a local organisation which helps people who have previously been homeless and are recovering from either drug or alcohol dependence. I am always filled with such sadness when I hear

some people speaking with prejudice and hostility about recoveriers of alcohol and drug dependence. I can honestly say every person recovering from either drugs or alcohol dependence that I have either assessed or has been a client of mine, has without exception experienced severe trauma and deep pain in their childhood and consequently have sought solace in either drugs or alcohol to take away the painful feelings, they seek numbness from their agony at any cost. This does not mean I condone any anti social behaviour or criminal activity; this is a symptom of the disease. However, I often think how I would cope, what sort of adult I would be, if I ever experienced the devastating childhood trauma’s that I have listened to over the years. Having left there I get in my car and head for my office in Christchurch. I love where my office is, very close to The Priory, and I often walk around the grounds, especially if I have just been working with clients. It seems to ‘ground’ me and I can enjoy the beauty that man is capable of instead of the cruelty that I have just been listening to. I finally write up my client notes and refer the client on to an appropriate counsellor within the service. Its then time to put away my ‘counselling assessor’ hat and put on my ‘trainer’ hat ready for the evening courses…… but that’s another story.

Picture: Christchurch Priory Bell Ringers with Reverend Canon Hugh Williams in 2010.

A Ringing Endorsement for the Convent Walk Centenary

The historic Priory bells will be heard ringing out over the town on Wednesday 22nd June 2011, just as they were on the same date a century ago for the coronation of King George V and Queen Mary. The peal will be rung from 10.15am to 10.45am to commemorate the centenary of the scenic Convent Walk footpath beside the millstream, which was officially opened as part of the day-long celebrations in 1911 – see the Local History article in this issue of Christchurch Eye. The ringing will be by the local Christchurch Priory Bell Ringers to accompany a ceremony at the Gin Hatch on Convent Walk where, at 10.15am on 22nd June – the precise time of the official opening of Convent Walk in 1911 - a commemorative blue plaque will be unveiled by former Mayor and local historian Michael Hodges. This new plaque, which is cast from 100% recycled

aluminium, has been funded entirely by members of the Christchurch Local History Society to help promote local history and is the first to be erected since the Millennium Trail plaques were created over ten years ago. Anyone wishing to help celebrate the town’s history is welcome to attend. The Priory tower contains thirteen bells. The two oldest were cast in 1370 by the Royal Bellfounder appointed by King Edward III and carry a medallion of the King’s head, indicating that they were a royal gift to the Priory. The Christchurch Priory Bell Ringers practice on Mondays 7.30pm-9.00pm. Anyone interested in taking up this centuries old art of bell ringing locally should contact Rosemary Rogers on 01202 473175 or alternatively visit www.wp ringers.org.uk.

“Cheryl Dennett is doing a great job in producing ‘Christchurch Eye’. This, to my mind, is the best local magazine we have. It is very well produced, in a neat size; it is aesthetically pleasing with lovely, bright cover photographs of the local area. Cheryl’s commitment to the local community is clear from the energy and enthusiasm she displays in her involvement in the community, and many of our projects”

Lesley Burt, Local resident

And here’s what our advertisers have to say about us “In my experience, advertising can be a very” hit and miss” affair. However, since starting to advertise with Christchurch Eye a few short months ago, I’ve been blessed with an absolutely superb response! I have gained new clients both for my Private Practice AND for my Self-Hypnosis Workshops. Also, every client who has come to me has without fail said how much they enjoy (and look forward to) reading Christchurch Eye and what a superb local community-focussed publication it is. Moreover, Cheryl and her team are a delight to work with. No wonder then that Christchurch Eye is now my NUMBER ONE choice for any local marketing I do.” Derek Palmer, Creative-Plane Hypnotherapy

ChristchurchEYE

Providing a potential of around 22,500 local readers. In total there are 9,000 copies of ChristchurchEYE (per edition) distributed in the BH23 with 6,000 of those being door-to-door. The readership figure is based on the assumption that, on average, each copy is read by 2.5 people.
