Editor’s Letter By Cheryl Dennett
finally arrived! I love this time of year. Not only do I find I have more energy to tackle all those long awaited jobs around the house, there’s plenty of Bank Holidays to do them all in. It’s also a time when we can kick back, relax and spend some time with the family on days out, even if it’s just a walk to the Quay to play in the park and have a cuppa and cake. We’re so very lucky to live here in Historic Christchurch as there’s always so much to see and do that we don’t have to travel far to enjoy a good day out. Inside this issue, we’ve a Pair of Tickets to see Gerry & the Pacemakers at The Regent for the winner of the Sudoku competition so get those entries in! Congratulations to Mr M Gardener who won a Bouquet of Flowers last month courtesy of Fairmile Florists & Golden Kiss Spray Tanning who won our monthly ‘Win an Ad’ competition; why not visit our website to enter your business? Are there any keen amateur or professional photographers out there? Each month, the winning entry will see their masterpiece on our front cover! Just email us your best shots to info@christchurcheye.co.uk
This month’s image was taken by Tony Mathews and can also be seen at www.wordsandpictures.me.uk Our Community Diary within our back pages is starting to become more popular; If you know of a local event, do please let us know so that we can include it. We want Christchurch Eye to be a great resource for our readers therefore adding great value to our content. Fingers crossed for some lovely weather over the forthcoming weeks - perhaps you can sit outside in the garden and enjoy reading your copy of Christchurch Eye! Finally, please don’t forget to mention Christchurch Eye when responding to adverts as without our advertisers there wouldn’t be a magazine! And remember to keep supporting our local traders - use them or lose them! Happy reading!

Come and Master Self-Hypnosis in Just 2 Days! Creative-Plane Personal Development are running their popular Self-Hypnosis Workshop at Wessex Therapy Clinic, Stour Road, Christchurch on the weekend of 14 & 15 May 2011. Creative-Plane founder, Derek Palmer says: “There are no pre-requisites for this Workshop — all we ask is that when you book yourself on to a self-hypnosis seminar, you attend with an open mind. Some huge shifts in beliefs and behaviours happen on this Workshop, and everyone who attends the Workshop experiences powerful changes, magical discoveries and more, so an open mind is essential when booking your place.” Do you sometimes wonder why you have all the best intentions but can’t seem to get through to yourself to make changes? EMBROIDERY ON BARGATES What’s going to be the coolest class for youngsters from age 7 to join, in 2011? If the last six months is anything to go by, it’s the one at Bonnie Stebbings’ new store on the Bargates, in Christchurch. Teenagers, too, have their own after-school groups, as well as holiday courses. With a love for needlecraft dating from her teen years at Twynham School, Bonnie has opened Pinks Embroidery shop and school, at 65 Bargates. With the huge trend towards creative craft hobbies now sweeping the world and a desire to produce something that is attractive and personalized, schoolchildren, teenagers and adults are discovering how to use a needle and coloured threads as they enjoy learning different stitching techniques, with all materials supplied by the store. Day and evening classes provide adult students with a chance either to learn a new hobby or to revive those skills learned years ago. The 6-week blocks of classes are popular and run continuously – extra courses are always put on to clear waiting lists.

Half-term and Easter holiday workshops will also be taking place in the next few months; in these 2½ hour sessions, students will learn Embroidery, Hand Sewing and Appliqué - do call in or phone to reserve a place. A fun feature at Pinks’ are the children’s parties. Arranged for between 5 and 10 guests, they consist of party games, eating and sewing. At the end of the 2-hour session, each child leaves with a party bag of sewing items as well as their own hand-sewn creation to treasure. In response to requests from local craftspeople, Bonnie now also stocks fabrics and supplies for patchwork and quilting. (She’s seeking a trained, qualified assistant to teach these two subjects, so please contact her if you fit the bill.) Pinks Embroidery has only been open six months but with its huge selection of embroidery kits and sewing equipment for sale - as well as its classes – it’s already become a popular venue for those who want to browse or sew in a happy, relaxed atmosphere, surrounded by the beauty of creative needlecraft.

BATTING FOR BUSINESSES Shake Shack, High Street and Made 2 Measure, Barrack Road have recently opened their doors and it’s pleasing that in the current economic climate there are people with grit and Julie determination to start up a new business or improve an existing one. Small businesses are the country’s life blood, employing 58% of the workforce. Their growth results in new jobs and wealth creation and these small businesses need people batting for them. I recently attended the Annual General Meeting of Christchurch Chamber of Trade and Commerce. Alastair Hoare of Williams Thompson Solicitors, has gallantly taken on the Presidency for a record third term. In his address he outlined some of the actions the Chamber had taken over the past year and what it was planning to do over the next. There are a range of action points on which the Chamber has, and continues to focus its attention. Putting pressure on the council to: freeze parking charges and improve regimes; improve street cleaning and engage with businesses to achieve this; to implement better signage and maps for pedestrians; improvements to Christmas lights and extended free Christmas parking and completion of bypass subway improvements. Some of these projects have funding in place, but have yet to be implemented. The Chamber also supports a range of initiatives, for example the Food Festival, Christmas Festival and Community Day and undertakes work such as promoting the car park refund scheme, producing a shopping and services guide, keeping an eye on planning and development and speaking on local issues raised by businesses. So much work is done by the Chamber on behalf of local business, of all kinds, and it would be great to see more of these businesses becoming members – thus providing strength in numbers and support for each other in difficult times.

Love your town, now love your heart Christchurch
Christchurch has become one of the first places in the UK to wear its heart on its sleeve as a British Heart Foundation (BHF) Heart Town. Christchurch Borough Council has teamed up with the BHF to help put the heart into Christchurch as part of the charity’s Mending Broken Hearts Appeal which has been launched to mark its 50th anniversary this year. Heart Towns are a brand new initiative from the nation’s heart charity, bringing communities together through local fundraising and volunteering as well as helping to raise awareness of heart disease. It offers residents a raft of support services including schools initiatives, workplace health guidance and lifestyle information resources. Speaking at the launch of Christchurch Heart Town at the Committee Room, Christchurch Borough Council, Neil Jarrett, BHF Fundraising Volunteer Manager in Christchurch says: “We are delighted that Christchurch Borough Council has decided to become a Heart Town. Local people can get involved in the many activities and events that will happen throughout the year, details of these will be announced over the coming weeks. We will be working with the Christchurch community to raise awareness of heart disease and raise money for the BHF’s Mending Broken Hearts Appeal. Please get involved and pledge your support today.”
The Mayor of Christchurch, Cllr Nick Geary, explains why the town has joined this initiative: “Christchurch is very pleased to support the Heart Town Initiative by becoming one of the country’s first Heart Towns. The concept of the Heart Town fits very well with the Fit Christchurch initiative we’ve been running with Christchurch Community Partnership for the past two years. By encouraging people to take more exercise we hope to be able to prevent heart disease. I do hope that our residents will also get behind the BHF’s Mending Hearts Appeal.” The Mending Broken Hearts Appeal is the biggest ever fundraising appeal ever launched in the BHF’s history. The goal is simple: to fund the research that could begin to ‘mend broken hearts’ in as little as 10 years and save and improve the lives of millions within decades. There is no cure for a broken heart. This ground-breaking research can change that and help researchers learn how to teach the heart to ‘heal itself’. In order to do this the charity needs to spend £50 million on the research to repair damaged hearts. The hope is, if it can get the money, it could be funding trials with heart failure patients in as little as five years. That’s why Christchurch’s support is so vital. Every person in Christchurch really can make a difference and help give hope to millions. You can do almost anything you like! Volunteer your time, buy the BHF’s great new products, donate muchneeded funds or even get on your bike. Whoever you are, there’s a way for you to get involved and give hope. Visit bhf.org.uk/hearttowns or call your local Fundraising Volunteer Manager, Neil Jarrett on 07879 480835 or email jarrettn@bhf.org.uk.
The BHF is aiming for as many towns and cities across the UK to sign up and become a Heart Town, to help the growing issue of heart and circulatory disease, the UK’s biggest killer.

New Gorse, by Karlina St Vincent New gorse sharpens the upper path Between the sea And the crumbling cliffs On an early April day. Lateral Thinking Lateral thinking puzzles are a hybrid between a brief story and a puzzle. In each puzzle some clues to the scenario are given but they don’t tell the full story. In order to solve the puzzle you need to work out which details are missing. You can solve them alone but it’s more fun with friends.

Brogan’s Column March and April are such beautiful months; the transition from winter to spring; the early morning sun and longer days; the council planting flowers ready to bloom on the roundabouts and Christchurch Market as busy as ever. Not only is it my birthday, but also a time to celebrate Mothers Day, and what a lot of thanking I need to do! My mum is one of the most important people in my life. She’s my counsellor, personal shopper, cleaner, chef, taxi driver, nurse… but most importantly, my best friend too. Growing up, whenever I fell out with a friend or wanted answers to things, I always went to my mum. When I wanted to start wearing make up or know how to talk to boys, I always went to my mum. When I was bullied and needed advice, I always went to my mum. Even now, when I’m completely lost and need a cuddle and a cry, she’s the best person to go to. My friends used to question ‘why do you tell her everything?’ and I would tell them ‘If you can’t tell your friends, then who can you tell?’ Looking back, I pity the kids who couldn’t tell their mums things, because I don’t know how I would have coped. But Mothers Day is not just about my mother, but her mother too. A Grandmother is just as important, and what a special role they play. One lady came into work the other day and said ‘Grandma’s do all the things that the parents can’t’, which made me smile. Every Saturday on my lunch break, my wonderful Grandma walks into Christchurch and waits for me at ‘Kelly’s Kitchen’. We eat lunch together in the short space of time, and talk about all kinds of things. I look forward to it every week, knowing that someone cares enough to make the effort and dedication. Even if she’s been invited somewhere else, she never lets me down. So thank you Mum and Grandma, without you both, I wouldn’t be the person I am today! Enjoy such a lovely month with your loved ones. Love,
Brogan x

Local History By Phil Tate
The Priory Garderobe June 2011 sees the centenary of the Convent Walk footpath, one of Christchurch’s most interesting and attractive features. To commemorate this anniversary, throughout the year these Christchurch Eye Local History articles are featuring a few of the historic landmarks that can be seen on a stroll along Convent Walk. Opposite Convent Walk on the bank of the millstream in the south-east corner of the Priory grounds is a ruin that can lay claim to being the town’s oldest toilet. The stone structure was thought to be merely a tower until it was excavated in the late 1960’s by local archaeologist Michael Ridley. He identified it as a monastic garderobe or toilet block, and the discovery of spring stones (the base of an arch) was evidence that the millstream once flowed under the building. Documentary evidence that the Priory toilets utilised the millstream comes from an inquisition conducted before the King’s judges at Romsey in 1281. The case, recorded in the medieval Christchurch Priory Cartulary, was to establish whether or not the millstream had been illegally diverted, ‘thereby depriving the prior’s mill of water, and cutting off the supply to the kitchen and that used for cleansing the privies’. Ridley’s excavation uncovered a wealth of finds dating back to the 13th century. Alongside bone and pottery fragments were numerous small objects including a
stone mould depicting a church (possibly the Priory church), a pewter Seal of Solomon brooch, comb, keys, buckles, strap end, thimble, and needles. Intriguingly, there were also seventeen pieces of leather, mostly shoe soles of a design dating to the early 15th century. Ridley suggested that this leatherwork had survived because oak tree debris floating down the millstream had become trapped and created tannic acid – a natural preservative. Another speculation is that this out-of-the-way building might have housed a small monastic tannery, one of the most polluting of medieval industries. Whether a toilet or tannery, life for the medieval miller downstream at Place Mill cannot have been too pleasant! The precise age of the garderobe is unknown. The 13th century finds suggest that it was constructed shortly after the Augustinian Priory was established in the mid-12th century. However, it is possible that it was constructed at a later date and all the discovered objects were merely dumped in the abandoned outbuilding after the canons were evicted from the Priory by King Henry VIII in 1539. The true story may never be known. September 2010 a small group of volunteers organised by The Christchurch Antiquarians, a local society dedicated to the research and archaeology of the town, set about clearing the vegetation that was smothering and potentially damaging the garderobe walls. Permission for the work was granted by both the Priory House Trust and Christchurch Council – and a bat expert assured that no bats were nesting in the stonework. The volunteers later cleared the stone wall located a short distance upstream from the garderobe. The origin of this second structure is uncertain, but one theory is that it might be the remains of the Priory kitchen mentioned in the 1281 inquisition.
