Talk of the Town

This is what our readers think of our businesses here, in Christchurch!

For all your haberdashery needs look no further then “Feather In The Breeze” on Bargates. The lady who owns the shop makes her own jewellery and is absolutely brilliant at adding decoration such as fancy buttons to clothes and bags. If you want something really different this is the place to go. She will also change hooks on jewellery for magnetic fasteners at a very cheap price. Nothing is too much trouble for her. Quality goods, sold with a smile and helpful hints if required. Helga Speck

The Sunday Carvery at YOGI pub in Christchurch are out of this world - Great food, great service and great staff. Helga Speck I love Cheese and Alfie’s - great value, delicious food and a smiling welcome. Fiona Howarth

Editor’s Choice - Think Print in the High Street, check every week that they not only Price Match their Ink Cartridges but beat most other competitors such as PC World, Comet, Tesco & more! Fantastic advice & service too!

Shrove Tuesday

Shrove Tuesday (also known as Pancake day) is the day before Lent starts: the Tuesday before Ash Wednesday. It’s a day of penitence, to clean the soul, and a day of celebration as the last chance to feast before Lent begins. Shrove Tuesday is sometimes called Pancake Day after the fried batter recipe traditionally eaten on this day. But there’s more to Shrove Tuesday than pigging out on pancakes or taking part in a public pancake race. The pancakes themselves are part of an ancient custom with deeply religious roots. Shrove Tuesday gets its name from the ritual of shriving that Christians used to undergo in the past. In shriving, a person confesses their sins and receives absolution for them. When a person receives absolution for their sins, they are forgiven for them and released from the guilt and pain that they have caused them. In the Catholic or Orthodox context, the absolution is pronounced by a priest. This tradition is very old. Over 1000 years ago a monk wrote in the Anglo-Saxon Ecclesiastical Institutes: Shrove Tuesday is a day of celebration as well as penitence, because it’s the last day before Lent. Lent is a time of abstinence, of giving things up. So Shrove Tuesday is the last chance to indulge yourself, and to use up the foods that aren’t allowed in Lent.

This is a huge question and I don’t profess to have the answer in my column, however it’s a topic very close to the thoughts of the Chamber of Trade at the moment. This is because a planning application has been submitted to Christchurch Council to redevelop the Meteor Park site, Somerford including a new 5110m² food store. This is larger than Waitrose, slightly smaller than Sainsbury’s and will be a major retailer. This is not to be confused with the Lidl store application. Who’d be a councillor in this situation? On the one hand the site is tired looking and redevelopment would smarten up the area, plus - and this is a huge benefit - create around 230 new jobs. However, what impact would the opening of such a large store, which will no doubt sell a whole range of goods, have on the town centre? It was said that when Sainsbury’s pulled out of the store at Saxon Square the life was sucked out of the town centre. Since then Waitrose and M&S have arrived to bolster the attraction of shopping in Christchurch. But the economic climate is already making things really tough for everyone, not in the least our small, independent traders who lose out the most from outof-town competition. The applicants appear to hold the view that the proposal will bring vitality to shopping in Christchurch, but have they visited the town and seen the location in respect to the town centre? It’s going to be a tough decision for the Council. But few people appear to be aware of the plans and I’m sure the Council would be interested to hear your views, either for or against this development.

Fundraising for Druitt Community Centre put on hold Christchurch Community Partnership has temporarily put fundraising for a new Druitt Community Centre on hold due to the difficult economic climate. Members of the Community Centre Steering Group decided on this action following abortive attempts to secure the significant amounts of money needed for the project to progress. Chairman of the Steering Group, Sandra Prudom, said: “We couldn’t have chosen a worse time to launch our fundraising campaign. Just as preparations had been made and blueprints drawn up, the country entered one of the worse recessions we have known “Although we have received generous donations from local people and some local Trusts, our attempts to find organisations that could come up with larger amounts

of money have been fruitless. To be honest, when so many are losing their jobs and suffering financial hardship we could hardly justify spending £1million on a building – however necessary it is to the town. “However, we are optimistic that, once the economic situation recovers, we will be able to take our plans forward and build a new town-centre community facility which Christchurch deserves. “We are immensely grateful to everyone who has donated money and time for the project so far and we would assure them that their donations will not go to waste. We have received a grant from the government’s Community Builders fund which will enable us to carry out a feasibility study to help us update our business plan and look into future funding opportunities.” The initial planning consent for the building runs out in August 2011, but this will be renewed for a further three years and members of the Steering Group have committed to reviewing the situation with regard to funding on an annual basis until the economy recovers.

Derek Palmer has been registered by the Complementary & Natural Healthcare Council (CNHC), the UK regulator for complementary healthcare. The recognition places him at the forefront of a national drive to provide a benchmark for standards and safety for the public. Derek said: “Achieving registration is not only great news for me and my clients, but a vital step for hypnotherapy.”

“This is the time of year when many people are struggling to keep up their New Year resolutions. The most popular uses for hypnotherapy are around stress and anxiety conditions, weight control and addictive behaviours such as smoking and alcohol abuse.” Hypnotherapy is one of 11 disciplines now recognised by the CNHC. Members of the public can search the CNHC register to find practitioners in their local area. More than 40,000 searches were carried out last year. By providing a verification of standards, the CNHC allows GPs, hospitals, private healthcare providers and insurance companies to refer patients to hypnotherapy practitioners or to make hypnotherapy more readily available in health centres, clinics, doctors’ surgeries and hospitals. Brogan’s Column Bullying is not new. We know about it, we learn about it and some even experience it. But thanks to the Internet, some teens are witnessing it at home. Online harassment, more commonly known as cyberbullying, is becoming an increasing problem. People are given the power social networking sitesthrough and instant messaging, to hurt others.

Brogan

As I was researching the damaging effects cyberbullying has on children and teenagers, I came across a very touching, personal story on YouTube called ‘Teen Bullying Prevention - A Cyber Bullying Suicide Story’. A father speaks out to schools of the loss of his son, Ryan Patrick Halligan, who committed suicide at just 13 years old in 2003, after he was relentlessly bullied at school and on the Internet. You may or may not have heard his story, but it is one that is deeply moving and important to address. Like his family, I can’t even begin to imagine the pain, humiliation and depression Ryan was going through. His peers were pretending that another girl liked him online and made him share personal thoughts, which were ‘copied and pasted around for a good laugh at his expense’. Children are so vulnerable to this kind of bullying and often don’t speak out. Ryan’s father says ‘I just hope you guys have the courage to step forward and ask for help, when you ever feel the way Ryan felt.’ It’s unbelievable how much society has changed teenager’s ways of bullying, and how sometimes they have no idea that what they write and say can have dramatic affects on someone. This kind of bullying is mental abuse, and although Ryan is no longer in the world, there are still children like him suffering every single day. Charities like Childline (0800 1111) and Bullying UK are out there to help. If you, or someone you know is experiencing bullying, do make that call. Please don’t suffer alone. With love,

Brogan x

Poetry Corner Place Mill, by Lesley Burt Saxons of Twynham praise the goddess, Nerthus, for forests full of rabbits and deer, harvests of nuts in autumn, wood for homes, heat and charcoal; Thank the ocean for mackerel and the music of ripples ruffling pebbles, the percussion of waves pounding rocks at the Head. Above all, they revere two rivers that flow south to the sea and surround them with a natural moat that guards against invasion and teems with wildfowl and salmon.

So, for bread, they build a mill here at the auspicious confluence of the Stour and Avon. Beside the Quomps, spirit of mother earth sings through centuries to Christian monks, Norman invaders, tourists, musicians, painters, crafters of wood and embroiderers in the Japanese tradition.

The Convent Walk Centenary Christchurch Sailing Club - June 2011 sees the centenary of Convent Walk, one of Christchurch’s most interesting and beautiful features. To commemorate this anniversary, throughout the year these Christchurch Eye Local History articles are featuring a few of the historic landmarks that can be seen on a stroll along Convent Walk. Directly across the millstream from Place Mill is the old clubhouse of the Christchurch Sailing Club. It is considered that the Club was founded in 1874 by Benjamin J Tucker, a saddler with premises in the High Street. The early Club had about twenty members, most of them prominent local businessmen and ‘gentlemen’. Although it leased land on Convent Meadows it had no clubhouse and meetings were held at members’ houses, the Royalty Fishery offices or local hostelries - a favourite venue was apparently Newlyn’s Hotel in Castle Street, now The Kings Hotel. Ladies were first allowed to join - at half fee – in 1896. With the membership growing it was decided that a dedicated meeting place was needed, so members advanced a loan of £150 and a clubhouse was promptly constructed on Convent Meadows by local builder George Pope at a final cost of £155-7s-7d. The opening of this clubhouse was celebrated with a regatta held at the Quay on 19th August 1896. However, it was not until 1909 that the Town Regatta was established as a regular annual event. In coronation year 1911, a single-storey wooden

boatshed called the Long Boatshed was built next to the clubhouse at a cost of £198. However, Christchurch Council initially objected to the proposed shed on the grounds that the ‘elevation would be an eyesore’. Ironically, the Long Boatshed is now over-shadowed by the new clubhouse and by the Priory Quay housing estate which, despite winning two architecture awards, inspired a similar public controversy before (and after) being built on the site of a former boatyard in 1987. For many years the floor of the Long Boatshed was comprised of clay obtained from nearby Steep Banks. This was to ensure that the wooden boats would not dry out too much when stored over winter. The floor is now concrete, but the Long Boatshed remains in use and the Club’s wooden-hulled sailboat Ianthe is still seasonally bedded down much as she would have been a century ago. A new clubhouse was erected in 1925 to accommodate the growing membership. For many years the upper floor of the old clubhouse was used as a sail loft for drying out the cotton sails, but with the introduction of modern materials after the Second World War this became increasingly unnecessary and in 1965 the sail loft was converted into a steward’s flat. Ianthe, the Club’s gaff rigged 24ft sailboat, is herself a historic feature. Named after a Greek sea-nymph, it is believed that she was built in Lymington in 1888 and custom designed to be a ‘gentleman’s fast sailing sloop for racing and pleasure sailing in Christchurch bay and the harbour’. Christchurch Sailing Club now has about a thousand members and welcomes applications from anyone with an active interest in sailing. Application forms are available from the office or online: www. christchurchsailingclub.co.uk With acknowledgement to ‘History Sails On’ by Stan Evans.
