our regular, ‘about town’ column by Jenni Baden Howard, editor of nonstopmama.com. an online glossy magazine, you can now subscribe to nonstopmama’s free email updates – delivered daily to your inbox – so you’ll never miss a post or one of the website’s great, regular giveaways! Isn’t this, to quote a suitably seasonal song, the most wonderful time of the year in Christchurch? Or one of many, anyway! As the countdown to Christmas begins, the excitement builds and the town’s shops literally light up with the festive spirit. Gorgeous window displays beckon us in, fairy lights twinkling, full of lovely gift ideas and “little somethings” begging to be added to our own wish lists! Of course, preparing for the Christmas isn’t without its stresses (hooray for a ‘medicinal’ hot chocolate stop at Cheese & Alfie’s!). How to bring a little of the Christmas magic created by the town’s wonderful gifts and interiors shops into our own homes? As Tracey at Lavender & Bay stressed when I asked what inspired her this season, in these budgetconscious times, the simplicity of a single, truly special decoration or ornament will really help to set the mood for the festive season. Her lovely ‘Noel’ cushion, handmade locally, is a great example! Tracey has an absolute passion for the handmade (locally, whenever possible) and fair trade (2 Wick Lane).

Just up the road at Crickle Wood, Marie and her sister Lynsey are super-excited about their ‘Christmas goodies’ (73 High Street) and, as ever, Traditions looks gorgeous with its traditionally decorated trees and more (70 High Street). Speaking of ‘statement trees’, stepping into Thomas & Lucia is like arriving in a country home for Christmas – you almost want to sit down at one of the beautifully arranged tables (at least you can buy the ‘dressings’, to recreate the look at home!). Owners Sue and Matthew admit to being ‘a bit silly about it to be honest, but we really enjoy decorating the shop. We had over 1, 500 fairy lights on the main tree last year!’ (34 Bargates). But we’ll leave the last word to Lucy of Wisteria, whose eye for original, stylish yet affordable homewares is matched by her and Chrissie’s no-pressure, browser-friendly and personal service. ‘This year, our decorations for the tree range from traditional, wooden hanging decorations to stunning vintage baubles, cute little stockings to glitzy angels. Holly Wreath Christmas Card Holders are pretty and practical and our hand-knitted “Woolideer” make lovely additions to the home!’. The ‘Noel’ wooden blocks are really eye-catching, too (93 Bargates).

Until the next issue, subscribe to free email updates on beauty, homes, fashion and more at www.nonstopmama.com.

A stone’s throw (well, almost) from the Priory Church, Ye Olde Eight Bells is not only a treasure trove of collectibles – what could be more seasonal than the limited edition Lilliput Lane model of the Priory Church in the snow? – but offers an array of festively-patterned ribbons and trimmings by the metre. ‘The ribbons are always popular for decorating Christmas cakes and displaying cards,’ says Anita (16 Church Street). Check out the great new website, too, at yeoldeightbellsgiftshop.co.uk). 8 • Please mention Christchurch Eye when responding to adverts

JINGLE TILLS? By Julie Radcliffe Opening in time for the Christmas rush we have The Curiosity Shop, High Street and Bella Te on Barrack Road, but how can shops in a town like Christchurch compete with the outof-town centres, such as Castlepoint? With the country tightening its collective belt, maybe it’s time to return to a traditional Christmas, away from the huge consumer spend fest of recent years. Thoughtful, practical and unique small presents are often appreciated for the thought that has gone into the purchase. Shops in Christchurch are well placed to provide such gifts. As well as High Street, Church Street, Wick Lane and Castle Street, Bargates is brilliant for small independents. Bookends is giving Amazon a run for its money with competitive prices, and interesting games and gifts, and what about places such as the Priory Gift Shop for something different?

Christchurch has its very own ‘out of town’ stores. There’s a great toyshop at St Catherine’s Parade, plus a florist. Fairmile itself has computer shops and much more. Barrack Road has a range of independents, where product knowledge and customer service are second to none and don’t forget Highcliffe. There are national chains where bigger gifts can be obtained through Argos, Boots and WH Smith plus the retail parks in Barrack Road and Somerford Road. Christchurch Chamber of Trade has published an excellent guide listing around 700 outlets and businesses in Christchurch - copies are available from the Information Centre. Another good thing about Christmas shopping in Christchurch is that the Council offers free parking in the lead up to Christmas. This, along with the wide variety of cafes and restaurants, can make shopping a delight rather than the crowd-jostling chore it has become. So, now that the Christmas lights are on, why not shop local in Christchurch this Christmas?

A WEIGHT LOSS PROGRAMME WITH A DIFFERENCE. NO DIETING REQUIRED IT’S ALL IN THE MIND! “A weight loss programme without a diet?’ We are at that time of year again when it is very easy to over indulge. Dee has put together a simple and effective process using her unique collection of therapies for you to use for weight loss. One treatment may be all that is required. ‘Simple, fun and easy’ is the aim of this program. Most of us have come to the realisation that dieting alone may work for a while but then we often slip back into old patterns of behaviour. The cycle continues with weight increases often lowering our self esteem and confidence. The technique Dee uses incorporates many of her skills, enabling her to adapt an individual tailor made programme for you. Many of Dee’s clients have lost weight and maintained their slimmer figure. Brogan’s Column: Christmas already!

Can’t believe 2010 is nearly over and we’re heading into 2011! Christmas is such a beautiful time of year when everyone is gathered together Brogan Moone to enjoy food, drink, y laughter, presents and fun & where we recall the past year and look forward to the next. As a family, we have always had a very traditional Christmas; whether it’s enjoying a turkey dinner, Christmas crackers, visiting church, giving and receiving presents or being with all the family; it’s always an exciting and enjoyable time. Growing up, of course my brother and I loved the present opening. We would wake up way too early, rush to the end of our beds to see that Santa had filled our stockings and hurry downstairs to see more presents under the tree. I loved seeing that Santa had enjoyed my mince pie and the reindeers had a nibble of my carrot. One year, my parents made Christmas a whole lot more exciting. I remember being about seven years old and opening my eyes to pink toilet roll wrapped around my bedroom and leading out to the hallway. They had made a trail all round the house which I had to follow. My brother had the same and we were so excited when it led to two little Go-Karts in the garage! Another year, all our presents were hidden all around the house. We had clues where to find them in places like the washing machine and in the fridge. It was truly fantastic! However, more recently, I have been fortunate enough to experience Christmas in different countries on skiing holidays. I learnt to ski when I was ten years old and feel so lucky to get the opportunity to enjoy the sport and the spectacular mountainous views and pure white snow make my Christmas very special. So whether you enjoy being with your family or friends, away or at home this Christmas, lets finish 2010 with laughter and fun and start 2011 with a bang! Merry Christmas & A Happy New Year! Love, Brogan xxx

a Day in the Life of...

The Christchurch information Centre another day dawns bright and sunny and we open the doors to welcome our customers. We anticipate a busy day with questions to answer, information to give out, and tickets to book. We want to make sure that all our local customers leave happy with the information they want and every visitor to Christchurch enjoys a wonderful day in our beautiful town. We greet many familiar faces at the counter. Local residents we have known for many years come in to buy Council garden bags, car park permits and radar keys. Fancy a day away? We have Coach Day Trip brochures for many local companies who will pick you up from Bargates and whisk you away to all sorts of interesting places - all easily booked with us, no fuss. Want to go further afield? Why not come and pick up a Coach Holiday brochure and let us help you book it here. We also have a fantastic range of free Visitor guides for all parts of the country.

The day is drawing to a close. We’ve had a wonderful day and met so many new and interesting people and passed the time of day with many of our local customers. We close the door and guess what? The sun’s still shining!

Throughout the day the phone keeps ringing with requests for information on what to do, where to go, what to see and where to stay. Most times we can help but sometimes we’re flummoxed! “Hello, good morning, I’ve booked a week’s holiday in August and I can’t remember the place I’ve booked – can you help?”

Website: www.visitchristchurch.info

So if you’re passing our door, we’re next to the Regent Centre, pop in and say ‘hello’ we’d love to see you. Sara and her team Tel: 01202 471780 Fax: 01202 476816

By coffee break we have handed out lots of free information to many visitors – leaflets on historic Christchurch, museums and local attractions, town maps, bus and ferry timetables, things to do, local events and where to eat. From midday onwards it’s time for lunch, not that we close of course. It’s been a hectic morning in many ways. We’ve booked national Express to London and York as well as Heathrow Airport – over 60’s travel at 50% discount on most days! We’ve taken lots of Mayflower Theatre and Poole Lighthouse bookings and yes, even for the Christmas pantomime and with the added bonus of no booking fee or credit card charges - book with us and save some money! Or as an ideal present, why not purchase some theatre tokens from us? After lunch the pace picks up. Visitors ask “what can we do tomorrow”? We sell tickets for lots of events and concerts at pre-show prices – great savings. For local people we sell the Priory Church Concert tickets including Handel’s Messiah, the classic Christmas concert – a not to be missed event. www.christchurcheye.co.uk I T: 01202 477214 I M: 07791 022190 • 23

Local History

by Mike Andrews

The Truth about number 10 Bridge Street Last month’s article on the Pit Site showed the vulnerability of thatched buildings. Another Fire in a thatched building in Bridge Street in 1859 led to a historical misunderstanding that is still misleading people today. What is the misunderstanding?“That the Filer Knapper Building in Bridge Street was the head-quarters of the Custom Service in Christchurch.” August 1859 had been a dry month and on a Wednesday night early in September a fire broke out in the thatch near to the chimney of a cottage in Bridge Street belonging to Mr G. Brown, (opposite to where Prezzo’s restaurant is today). The fire took hold quickly and had soon spread to the adjoining cottages, also thatched. These were residences of Eli Troke, Mr G Butler, a watchmaker, and a long standing resident, Mr J. Everleigh Mason. The Town fire engine was quickly summoned. This was followed by the Barracks fire engine, which was accompanied by a large body of soldiers from E Troop Royal Horse Artillery. It was soon obvious that the buildings were doomed and efforts began to prevent the fire spreading by spraying adjoining properties with water. Before the fire in 1859 the buildings had been leased by the Jeans family, a well established local family whose sons in the past had filled the position of Mayor on no less than ten occasions. Joshua Stevens Jeans had also held the post of Supervisor of the Riding Officers for the Custom Service based in Christchurch. He was dismissed from the service under a ‘cloud’ in 1786. After the fire the site was purchased by Abraham Pike who was a Postmaster and grocer and lived opposite. This family also had links to the Custom Service. Abraham Pike’s father had been a supervisor of Customs at Christchurch in the early 1800’s. It was Abraham Pike junior who built the three story building that we now know today as Filer and Knapper, Accountants. It was a speculative adventure and when it was finished it was leased for five years to the “English Joint Stock Bank” who controlled the South Eastern Banking Co. The bank opened in 1864 with a claimed security of one million pounds. In 1866 Abraham Pike’s investment turned sour when the Bank closed after accumulating a lot of debt. Three years later there were reports in the Christchurch Times that conspiracy and fraud were factors in the bank’s collapse. With an empty building on his hands Abraham or members of his family moved in and

stored their belongings in the loft. Amongst the belongings was the Custom Officer’s Journal that had been diligently compiled by his father when he was serving as Supervisor. The Journal, when it was found some eighty years later, together with confusion over the two Abraham Pikes, was regarded as proof that the building had been the head-quarters of the Custom Service in Christchurch. This completely spurious history of the Filer and Knapper building has appeared in at least four publications and now has been reproduced on a number of web sites. As a result of the work done by Allen White, one of the Towns most diligent local historians, readers of the Christchurch Eye now know the truth. Bridge Street showing Abraham Pike’s building, now Filer Knapper Accountants Picture, copyright of The Red House Museum and the Christchurch Local History Society. Mike Andrews from the Local History Society would love to hear from you, to find out what you, our readers, would like to read about. Please do send in your requests to Christchurch Eye (Contact details on page 5). The Christchurch Local History Society produces a quarterly journal for its members (also available to purchase at Christchurch Information Centre) and organises a series of talks from September to May. These take place at the Christchurch Junior School in Clarendon Road, on the first Tuesday of the month. Local History Room, Christchurch Library, 29 High Street, Christchurch, BH23 1AW.
