Editor’s letter

I love the month of Novemb er when the whole family wrap up war m and head off to Stanpit Recreat ion Ground for the annual bonfire and firework display. There’s always so much to do and great to see so man y familiar faces (and an affordable eve nt for the whole family). My favourite part of the evening has to be the Gug ge 2000 Band! Jigging away to the Gugge band whilst embarrassing my boy s is always a must! A couple of exciting announ cements this month; Jenni Baden How ard, Editor of www.nonstopmam a.com previously Beauty editor for The Daily Telegraph for many years, now writes for a range of UK Glossies which now includes a monthly column here in the Christchurch Eye! Also , Brogan Mooney who wrote our Tee n Column for us last month has com e on board too as a regular columnist which is now titled ‘Brogan’s Column ’. Congratulations to Mrs M Robb of Highcliffe for winning our Sud oku Competition to see Christc hurch’s Gilbert & Sullivan Societys’ Princess Ida at the Regent Centre, we hope you enjoyed the sho w! Also,

congratulations to Mary Wh itcher for winning a Bouquet of Flow ers courtesy of Fairmile Florist!

As always, this magazine is brought to you free of charge to assist you when choosing local companies to provide you with local services and products. We hope to provide you with plenty of information and entice you to keep the magazine for the whole month, this way our advertisements get seen more. Let’s support our com munity and the businesses within it – we’d be lost without them! Finally, please don’t forget to mention Christchurch Eye when resp onding to adverts as without our adv ertisers there wouldn’t be a magazine! Happy reading, C Editor

Six reindeer at Christchurch Christmas Festival

Father Christmas has been so delighted at the reception given to him by Christchurch people in past years that he will be bringing more of his reindeer – six in total - to the town’s Christmas Festival. This year’s Festival takes place on Saturday 27 November and a host of entertainment is being planned to get everyone in the festive spirit.

The traditional Christmas market will be in the pedestrianised High Street from 10am to 7pm selling a wide range of food, drink and Christmas gifts. Father Christmas will be led by his reindeer into the High Street to join the Mayor, Cllr Nick Geary, on the balcony of the Mayor’s Parlour for the switch-on of the Christmas lights at 4.30pm. Heart FM breakfast show presenters Jules and Bunker will also be on the balcony to talk to the crowd. Following the ceremony, the reindeer will transport Santa down to the Priory where he will speak to children and receive their Christmas wish letters. Children will also get a chance to pet the reindeer there. Throughout the day, from 10am to 4pm, Christchurch Community Partnership will be presenting Magical Moments in the marquee in Saxon Square. This will include performances from Christchurch Music Centre, State of Undress, Stourvale Mummers, children’s entertainer Mervin Cole, Swing Unlimited, Pure Funk, Treehouse Theatre, Lighthouse bands and groups from Christchurch Junior School and Mudeford Infants. The Priory church will be holding its Christmas Fair on the same day. There will also be activities and entertainment in Bargates as well as offers in shops in the High Street and Bargates. Christchurch Library will be holding story-telling sessions and craft activities in the morning and afternoon.

Talk of the Town

This is what our readers think of our businesses here, in Christchurch! Did you know there is a small magazine called ‘Grace’ that is published in Christchurch and is in its 51st year? It sends its magazines all around the world. Whenever you pop into their office the Grace Ladies always make time for a chat and kind word. The magazine is a joy to read with its uplifting message and healthy living nature’s way.

Editor’s Choice: This month I’d like to say a Big Thanks to all the staff at the Post Office in Christchurch High Street. As a frequent visitor to their counters, I’m always presented with a ‘Hello’, a smile and polite conversation. I’ve always found that they are very helpful and informative of the many services that they provide.

The Mcpet shop in Walkford is the most helpful; welcoming pet shop in the area if they haven’t got something you need they will get it and deliver for you.

Hi I just wanted to feedback that Cheese and Alfies in Christchurch is such a great place to be!! The homemade cakes are fantastic; the staff are so accommodating, happy and friendly. My daughter loves the books, toys and drawing on offer and it just has a great feel to it!! The best bit is I had breakfast there this morning for 10p!!! (On the 10th day of the 10th month of 2010, Cheese & Alfies’ served Brekkie to their first 10 customers for 10p!) It was delicious. I cannot recommend this place enough.

Kev & Rob

My favourite place in Christchurch is by the river where I go fishing and watch the wildlife. It is quiet there and away from the noise of the town. A place where you can just relax without being disturbed.

Heather Costello

Since the re-opening of the Copper Skillet last year my fiancé and I have become frequent visitors as we love their wonderful breakfasts. My fiancé has the full skillet and always comments on what a filling and good quality breakfast it is. I usually have the smaller version the ‘Half Skillet’ which is just as great. The owners and staff are always welcoming and friendly and cannot do enough for you. Having tried many ‘a breakfast out’, it is by far the best.

AN INDEPENDENT VIEW By Julie Ratcliffe New in town this month is Pinks Embroidery and a new fruit and vegetable shop in Bargates, and shortly we shall see Lois’s Babies & Kids Store opening on Barrack Road, but what can be done to encourage more independent shops? Recently the Federation of Small Businesses’ held its Small Business Friendly Awards for councils. The winner for Best All Round Small Business Friendliness was Christchurch Council. The nomination contained a raft of the Council’s initiatives, including one where officers had contacted every business in the Borough entitled to Small Business Rate Relief (SBRR). Such relief will be of great help to struggling firms. Offering a helping hand with business rates leaves only the issue of continuous rent rises - another burden on a small business, particularly for high street premises. It is often the combination of rates and rent rises that tips a business over the edge. There are still many independent shops in the town centre, Bargates, and further afield and, at present, only a few empty units. These often end up being taken by national chains or charity shops, which are able to afford the payments. But this has led to a change in many high streets and complaints that it’s difficult to tell one from another. So it was interesting to read proposals in London to use the planning system to support the provision of affordable retail units when applications for retail developments are made. This already happens with housing development. So is this something that could be achieved here?

Established 17 years

The character of small towns such as Christchurch is often in the variety of its independent shops. Maybe potential new sites, such as the former Post Office site on Wick Lane, are ripe for such an idea. Perhaps the Council could pioneer this in Dorset and win again?

Our new columnist Jenni Baden Howard edits nonstopmama. com, an online magazine with beauty, fashion, homes, food, exclusive interviews and great giveaways. Jenni has written for many national newspapers and glossies, including The Daily Telegraph, Elle and Marie Claire Claire. I’m really excited about writing for Christchurch Eye and getting the opportunity to chat to all the fantastic local businesses and experts – from hair stylists to homes and interiors shops, restaurants to gift boutiques – with the aim bringing you lots of ideas and inspiration, targeted to the season. Where to begin?! This month, we’re kicking off with a beauty theme. Now that temperatures are dropping – despite the last minute rays of south coast sunshine we’ve been loving recently – it’s a great time to think about adding a bit of warmth and gloss to post-summer hair and updating your make-up for the colder months (any excuse to splash out on a new lip gloss or nail polish, no?). ‘After summer’s lighter, sunkissed looks, many clients want to tone their hair colour down a little for autumn,’ says Hannah Mattingly, art director at Toni & Guy salon, Christchurch (for appointments, tel: 01202 409560). ‘Many of us are drawn to warmer, more autumnal shades to match the season’. Colour-enhancing shampoos and conditioners – such as those by John Frieda and Charles Worthington, available in town at Boots and Waitrose, for example – along with temporary and semi-permanent colours (used at home or applied professionally in a salon) can be used to add depth and shine to post-summer tresses. Hannah at Toni & Guy also suggests the salon’s professional Natural Glossing treatment. ‘This is inbetween a semi-permanent and permanent colour,’ she explains. ‘It will fade out without regrowth, but it’s important to come in for a complimentary consultation first to check that it’s compatible with your hair’.

If you’re using home hair colours, the crucial thing is to check product packaging for suitability (especially if your tresses are already coloured or chemically treated), do the sensitivity and strand tests and always seek professional advice from a local salon if you’re in any doubt. More complex processes, like highlighting and lowlighting, are often best left to the pros. A fast, easy way to give your beauty routine an instant, seasonal update is at your fingertips (and toes, too!). ‘Very warm, autumnal nail colours are definitely “in” now,’ confirms Alison Filbee, senior therapist at the Matisse Beauty Clinic, Christchurch (for appointments, tel: 01202 487070). ‘The most popular shades for manicures now are mushrooms, darker browns and even deep greens’. Matisse stocks the Jessica range of Custom Nail Colours, a professional range that’s a hit with beauty pros. ‘Among our favourites in the salon are the new Victorian Crush, a soft green, and Bittersweet, a dark toffee shade, which are both part of the Muse autumn/winter collection’. The salon also offers a Jessica Three Week Manicure, which involves “setting” colour under UV light for glossy, long-lasting effect. ‘It’s ideal if you’re busy and the benefits include smudge and chipfree colour,’ adds Alison. On the town’s beauty counters, too, look out for this season’s delicious new shades of chocolate and rich, deep berries. At Boots, try No 7’s Stay Perfect Nail Polish in Spun Sugar and Damson Dream, Bourjois’ 1 Seconde Nail Polish in Gris Cashmere or Maybelline New York’s Forever Strong Professional Varnish in Extreme Blackcurrant or Really Rose. Coming in the next issue: ideas for decorating your home for Christmas. In the meantime, for more up-to-the minute news on beauty, fashion, homes and more, read Jenni’s blog at www.nonstopmama.com

Teen Column:

Winter is one of my favourite seasons; boiling hot bubble baths, cups of tea, big jumpers and fluffy socks, Saturday nights in with a take-away watching Strictly Come Brogan Moone Dancing or The X y Factor. Staying in my pyjama’s being fixed to the TV all day never seems bad or curling up on the sofa with an old Disney movie. Oh and of course, there’s always that glimpse of hope that we might witness some snow again!

However, despite all of that, everyday I find myself complaining to my friend Kelly on our walk to the train station about how cold it is. We both wish we had worn two pairs of socks or invested in a proper pair of gloves. Although, by the time we start walking and climb onto the busy train, we tend to forget about it. Another thing I always seem to complain about in the Winter is walking everywhere. Not only is it freezing cold in the mornings, but I’m always so tired from working and school work, I really can’t be bothered! Maybe it’s just because I’m lazy, but sometimes I persuade my mum to take me to the train station or pick me up from work, even though I don’t live that far away. Last Saturday however, I decided to cycle to work and as I was passing Christchurch Junior School, I saw an elderly woman stumble over the pavement and fall to the floor. She dropped her newspaper and purse and sat on the ground in shock. I jumped off my bike, helped her up again and asked if she needed me to call anyone for her. She seemed fine, thanked me, and walked on home. At that point, I realised, if someone nearly 50 years older than me can walk around Christchurch to her house at a slow pace, then I really shouldn’t complain about walking places too. So although I can’t drive yet, I’ll just put on a bigger coat and appreciate when my mum does give me lifts. She reminds me that I’m young and should be walking, even if it is winter!

Local History It is hard to believe that the site of a municipal car park was once a thriving community, an area with shops, small businesses and houses with families; it was swept aside to make way for the motorcar. The area is now the car park next to the Conservative Club, immediately adjacent to the roundabout at the end of the bypass. The roundabout is called the Pit site roundabout and the car park is the Pit site car park. The area was once a gravel pit from which the local inhabitants would have extracted gravel for building and road mending. When the gravel was no longer required or ran out the area was gradually developed. People built small cottages, yards and store houses on ground they had come to believe was theirs. These buildings were made of cob and thatch, (roofing slate not being a local material, was expensive) all the dwelling houses no doubt contained large families with very little furniture. By the early 19th century the community was an integral part of Bargates.

On the 20th July 1825 a catastrophic fire saw the total destruction of many houses and fifty two families were made homeless. The town of Christchurch responded to the tragedy with remarkable speed and compassion, homes were found for the homeless and a collection fund was started, over a thousand pounds was raised. As a result of the destruction the area was rebuilt with a different layout and different materials. Brick and slate were used rather than the cob and thatch. The design of cottages built was not dissimilar to the ones that have just been finished in Wick Lane. One thoroughfare was named after John Spicer, the Chairman of the committee that was set up to distribute the money raised. The generosity of the town at this time was commemorated in a Plaque which was placed on a cottage in Spicer Street (the cottage, incidentally, that my Great Great Grandparents lived in). The small map dating from the 1840s shows the layout of the area very well. It had a pump, blacksmith, small courtyard and a “lock up,” which replaced the “blind house” (a round building with no windows which was used to imprison miscreants). Over time the main route out of the Town changed, from the road through Bargates and

Faimile to Barrack Road which had once been just a lane leading past fields to the Barracks. This route began to attract more and more traffic with the growth in popularity of Bournemouth as a holiday destination in the late 19th Century and the increase of motor car traffic. This resulted in the widening of Barrack Road (on a number of occasions over the years). Then when the newly widened Iford Bridge was opened in the early 1930’s a bottleneck at the pit site was created. By the 1930’s the Pit site had become run down and neglected, it became rather notorious as a den of iniquity. The houses in western end of the Pit site were condemned and demolished, this was timely as it allowed the growing number of motor cars an easier access to the Town. The Eastern end of the pit site remained with buildings which included the Antelope Inn and Millers Brother builders and decorator’s house and yard. With traffic filled roads all around and plans for a new by pass coming right into the Town, these buildings were doomed and so after compulsory purchase by the authorities they were demolished and replaced by the Pit site roundabout leaving no memorial except the name. More information on the Great Fire and on the Pit site can be obtained from the Christchurch Local History Society.
