As I write this (mid-September), I have to tell you that I’ve just turned the heating on and it’s wet and miserable outside; autumn is truly upon us. Our thoughts are Cheryl now turning towards Halloween; Bonfire Night; the clocks going back and, dare I even say it – Christmas! Although I do love the summer, I also welcome the autumn and winter seasons and look forward to snuggling up on the sofa watching movies with the children or pulling on our welly boots and go jumping in muddy puddles! This is mine and Siena’s (my 4 year old daughter) favourite rainy day past time and I do believe I enjoy it every much as she does! I think that this month is a great time to get out and see the leaves on the trees turning to autumn colours, collect conkers and make the most of the fading daylight. If you’re looking for a local Halloween event for the children I can recommend the Children’s Halloween Fancy Dress Party at Hall on the Hill, St Catherine’s Hill, from 4-7 pm on 31st. This month sees the 600th anniversary of the Battle of Agincourt, which was fought upon St Crispin’s Day (25th October) 1415. This remarkable English victory over the French was immortalised by William Shakespeare in his play Henry V - but what connects Agincourt, Shakespeare, and Christchurch?
Once in France, the English besieged the fortified port of Harfleur. However, it took five weeks to secure this vital bridgehead, far longer than anticipated, so the King was compelled to leave a garrison and withdraw to England for the winter. Nevertheless, to demonstrate his right to be in France he decided to lead his greatly depleted army the 300 miles to the English-held port of Calais.
When King Henry V ascended the throne in 1413 he asserted his ancestral claim to various territories in France. One of the ambassadors he sent to the French court in Paris to negotiate a surrender of these lands was Thomas de Montacute, the 4th Earl of Salisbury. The Earl was renowned as a skilled and dauntless warrior, and Shakespeare would later feature him in two of his plays. He was also the Lord of the Manor of Christchurch.
At Agincourt, some 50 miles south of Calais, the weary, sick, and rain-sodden English found their route blocked by a superior French army.
Anticipating that his demands would be rejected by the French, King Henry was already making plans to seize the disputed territories by conquest. The recruitment of troops was soon underway and the Earl of Salisbury contracted to provide the King with 120 fighting men, including himself. In June 1415 the Earl was granted royal assent to use his manors of Christchurch, Canford, and Poole to muster his retinue of ‘men-at-arms, hobelers [light cavalry], mounted archers, and their servants, and horses’ that would soon accompany the King overseas. In July 1415 the King arrived in Southampton to oversee the final preparations of the vast invasion fleet that was being assembled. Because there was only a small Royal Navy, royal commissioners had been sent out to requisition all merchant vessels that were able to carry 20 or more tuns (large barrels). The commissioners may have visited Christchurch, but it seems that not every suitable ship sailed directly to Southampton as ordered.
Shakespeare gave Christchurch’s Lord of the Manor two lines in Henry V. The first is just before the King’s rousing St Crispin’s Day speech in advance of the Battle of Agincourt. The other comes directly after the speech, when he delivers the daunting news that “The French are bravely in their battles set, and will with all expedience charge on us.” Against all the odds, the outnumbered English were victorious at Agincourt. Nevertheless, this did not end the wars in France, which continued after King Henry’s early death in 1422. Thomas de Montacute was killed six years later, as the English besieged Orleans, when a cannonball smashed through a window from which he was surveying the attack. Shakespeare portrayed this in Henry VI Part I. Although the Earl of Salisbury featured in Laurence Olivier’s 1944 Technicolor version of Henry V (played by Griffith Jones), do not look for him in Kenneth Branagh’s 1989 adaptation - he does not appear, and his few words before the Battle of Agincourt are delivered by the Earl of Gloucester!
While the King was in Southampton a plot to assassinate him was exposed. He immediately had the ringleaders arrested. The Earl of Salisbury was one of the 19 nobles who sat in judgement as the Earl of Cambridge and his two co-conspirators were tried for treason. The three men were found guilty and promptly executed at Southampton’s Bargate. On 11th August 1415 the fleet, reported as 1,500 ships, set sail for France carrying 12,000 men and up to 20,000 horses. A contemporary account says that the main fleet waited in the Solent to be joined by ships that had been harboured ‘in various places along the coast’. So did some of the men provided by the Earl of Salisbury perhaps sail directly from Christchurch?

RICHARD GODSELLS LONDON PROPERTY EXHIBITION After the success of last year’s London Property Exhibition where local properties from Richard Godsell’s Southbourne, Christchurch and Highcliffe offices were displayed to a London audience, the company has decided once again to offer their clients properties directly to a variety of London buyers. Christchurch Blue Plaques by Stephen Roberts No. 9 - ‘Charity Begins At Home’
Charity, not Charity Dingle (Emmerdale), but ‘charity’, the act of giving; Christchurch has a long, proud history in this regard. Blue Plaque 11 takes us to ‘Bookends’, once a house belonging to John Clingan, a man of good deeds. The plaque states that in 1714 a house and shop here, with farm and other land, were left by Clingan, a mercer, leading to the establishment of ‘Clingan’s Trust’ in 1736. Set up to benefit the parish’s poor, the income from this trust continued to assist young Christchurch people right up to today, some 3,000 in fact. In former times the income funded apprenticeships in occupations like shoemaking, dressmaking, carpentry, tailoring and even a life at sea. The Clingan Trust must have owned a considerable amount of land at one time, as in 1863, when the Ringwood to Christchurch Railway was being extended to Bournemouth, the Trust sold land either side of the Stour (at Iford) for this purpose. The house has since been rebuilt and from 1760 to 1936 was the premises of those Ferreys (September’s ‘Eye’), who had a drapery business. It became a furniture showroom and is now, of course, ‘Bookends’, book and art shop, which still pays rent to the Clingan Trust. Returning to ‘giving’, the Clingan charity is by no means the only famous one in Christchurch. There was also the Charity Hospital of Mary Magdalen, which once had buildings at the Magdalen Lane end of Barrack Road Recreation Ground, judiciously sited outside the old walls, as they were treating unfortunates suffering from leprosy.

It was ‘Mary Magdalen’ of course because Jesus cured her of ‘infirmities’. The charity still exists to help the needy and must be one of the oldest continuously operating in the country.
Stephen Charitable ventures go back a long way in Christchurch, but the tradition is alive and kicking. The Christchurch Community Partnership aims to improve the economic, social and environmental well-being and quality of life of local people through a number of initiatives. Voluntary efforts keep the community ticking. This is as good a time as any to also acknowledge the work of the Christchurch History Society and another form of giving, for it is they that bestowed on us the Millennium Blue Plaques that it has been my pleasure to guide you around. The society is dedicated to the study of Christchurch’s past and the preservation of all aspects of its heritage. This is another volunteerbased society, formed in 1989, which is the custodian of a large archive of material relating to Christchurch. Are you stockpiling your carrier bags yet? No? You may be in for a shock! As from the 5th October Peter you will be charged 5p per bag at the supermarket. Indeed that is partly the idea – to shock us out of using vast numbers of bags every time we go shopping. Apparently the supermarkets gave away 8.5 billion plastic bags last year. We all know we ought to take our old bags with us when we do our weekly shop, but do we remember? For local businesses (and shoppers) the new Government rules take some understanding – and for once they appear to favour our local small shops and disadvantage the supermarkets. Whilst you will need to pay 5p a bag at Sainsburys and Waitrose – there will be no obligation on our local deli’s. Only businesses with over 250 employees must charge, so the majority of our local shops will be exempt. Even at the large shops, a plastic bag for raw meat will be free – but if you put a tin of beans in too the exemption disappears and the 5p charge will apply. Many will support the intention of “saving waste and saving wildlife�. Furthermore the idea is that the money raised will be “expected� to go to good causes, but there is no legal obligation and no definition of good causes. If you are involved in a local “good cause�, I suggest you contact the big shops without delay! Maybe enterprising small shops will try to steal an advantage by advertising “free bags here� – or maybe we will see people touting cut priced plastic bags? My worry is that I can see a lot of bad tempered exchanges at the check outs as we all get used to the new system and I pity the staff having to explain the new rules and charges to tired and unhappy shoppers.

Christchurch Citizens Association Summer, such as it was, is now over and the clocks go back to indicate that winter is around the corner. Halloween! Love it or hate it you can be sure that “ trick or treating” is here to stay, so we ask you to please ensure that an adult accompanies your children and that you only visit houses that you know will participate as some people find this intimidating. We understand the suggestion being considered is to have a rapid response Police presence at the Fire Station, however, no news is forthcoming with regard to a Police Desk in the borough and we are still awaiting the offer for the Police Crime commissioner or his representative to attend a CCA meeting. We are delighted that more people are hiring Druitt Hall, which means that funds are coming in to allow the continuation of improvement works to the hall. We applaud the efforts of members of the public in Lymington working hard to retain local bus services and we add our support to this venture. Members of the CCA are very interested to be part of the decision making process to help steer future changes brought about by the Town Plan, and we would welcome you to attend our meeting to give your views on things that you feel will improve Christchurch. We hope that local residents will be pleased at the road improvements at Blackwater junction however the CCA will never stop pushing for a relief road for our town. HOW EASY OR DIFFICULT CAN IT BE TO BE A LANDLORD?
I thought that this week I would share a conversation with you or rather some history culminating in a conversation!

Just under 3 years ago I was approached by a landlord looking to let out a house in Highcliffe, she was going to self-manage and thought our fees were high! She chose instead an online letting agent and the last I heard until last week was that the house was let.
Last week that landlord contacted me again to ask if this time around we would be able to manage the property completely and when I asked why this was her response (summarised!) The tenants were initially located and 6 month agreement put in place with rent agreed at £1500 PCM. After 6 months the tenancy went periodic (monthly). Earlier this year after some issues the landlord decided to serve notice upon the tenants to get the house back. It was at this point that the tenants advised the landlord that as paperwork relating to the deposit was not given to them at the end of the initial 6 months when the periodic tenancy started her notice was invalid! Having taken advice she found this to be correct which meant her serving the paperwork and returning the deposit before a valid notice could be served. She did this and then the tenants stopped paying rent! This meant instructing solicitors (cost) no rent coming in (cost) and a long wait – 3 months in the end.

So to summarise, had we managed the house the landlord would have incurred costs c£6000, in the end apart from the stress, the landlords costs amounted to c£5000 plus the tenants left without cleaning and having damaged the house (no deposit now held) so all in all the landlord probably saving a couple of hundred £’s.

Christchurch Rotary With charities recently in the news for all the wrong reasons, I thought readers would like to know how we at Christchurch Rotary go about our day-to-day business.

Whilst it’s easy to understand some charities aggressive approach to fund raising because they feel so passionately for their cause, there is a fine line, which should not be crossed. Likewise, the way money is spent is often cause for concern. At this moment in time the world faces challenges not seen before with horrifying images broadcast straight into our homes.
Whilst we all have our own individual views we must all accept that ‘something has to be done’. A perfect example of our approach is two forthcoming events the club is heavily associated with: The Stanpit Bonfire Event and The Contessa Charity grant application. Our Stanpit firework event has become a regular annual event, which is in our local community, enjoyed by our community, with funds going back into the community, mainly focused on local youth charities. Whilst this is a perfect scenario, we all have to be aware of the ‘wider picture’. The Contessa charity will help a small international community, but the impact will be huge, and far reaching. That’s the Rotary way. I can imagine from my opening paragraph that readers thought they were going to read another political article. No, that’s not how Rotary works. We leave politics to politicians. At Christchurch Rotary we collect monies face to face, we do not call you at home or pressurise you in any way. TOFFEE APPLES INGREDIENTS For the toffee coating 225 g demerera sugar 110 ml water 0.5 tsp vinegar 2 tbsp golden syrup 25 g butter
For the apples 6 apples 6 wooden skewers, for holding the apples ice lolly sticks will do INSTRUCTIONS Dissolve the sugar in the water over a moderate heat. When it has dissolved, stir in the vinegar, syrup and butter. Bring to a boil and cook without stirring until it reaches hardcrack stage (138C) or hardens into a ball when dropped in a jug of cold water. This should take around 10 minutes boiling time. While the syrup is cooking, pierce each apple with a wooden stick. Once the toffee is ready, dip each apple into the hot toffee, turning it around in the syrup so that each one is fully coated. Leave to harden on a lightly oiled tray before serving. If you’re planning to keep them for a day or two, wrap the apples in cellophane.

The Spinal Injuries Association (SIA) helps people with spinal cord injuries to rebuild their lives, through all aspects such as advice, help and support, campaigning and healthcare information. HOW DOES YOUR GARDEN GROW? TERRIFIC TULIPS!
If I could grow only one type of flower then it would have to be the tulip. Harbingers of warmer days, the choice available is mind-blowing. There are frilly parrot tulips bearing fringed petals, sturdy fat-flowered types and graceful plants with lily-like blooms. They are also tremendously accommodating. You can plant them much later than daffodils and narcissi because they don’t need to start producing roots so early. In fact you can plant them from now until Christmas! My mother uses them as annuals and rips them up after flowering but I can’t bear to do that so I plant them deeply and leave them in the garden where they return happily year on year.
If you want to use them as disposable bedding you only need to plant them about 10cm (4 inches) deep. If, like me, you treat them as old friends then plant them 23cm (9 inches) deep and they won’t disappoint you. POT LUCK Tulips are wonderful in containers. As a guide, a 25-30cm (10-12 inch) diameter pot will accommodate a dozen bulbs. For a larger 47.5cm (19inch) pot use 16 - 18 bulbs.
Cover the base with at least 5cm (2inches) of drainage material and 12cm (5 inches) of soil-less multi-purpose compost. Lay the bulbs in an inner and outer circle making
sure that no bulb touches either another, or the outside of the pot.
Fill the pot with compost to within 2.5cm (1 inch) of the rim. I finish pots off with strips of daisies or anemones planted around the edge in colours which complement the tulips. Water everything in but shelter the pot from heavy rain so it doesn’t become waterlogged and never water in frosty weather. I use water-retaining granules mixed in with the compost. These help to maintain soil moisture throughout the dormant season. Feed the daisies or anemones throughout their flowering season in the Autumn and the Spring and you should be rewarded with a beautiful display sometime in April or May.
I love to plant containers of tulips by my front door. I have a red door so choose something like Tulipa ‘Apeldoorn’ in yellow and red varieties underplanted with red daisies. If you have a blue or green door you might like to try Tulipa ‘Angelique’ (pale pink) underplanted with pink anemones. Or how about Tulipa ‘Bleu Aimable’ a brilliant purple/blue variety?

I always look forward to the end of October, as on the 31st it’s Halloween!
Laura Each year I celebrate Halloween differently. When I was younger I would go out trick or treating which was always great and I loved it, but now I am older, like most teenagers, I go to Halloween parties instead. Something that I didn’t know but recently found out is that in the UK over £300 million each year is spent on costumes, decorations and sweets! Another interesting fact is that instead of pumpkins, the first Jack O’Lanterns were actually made from turnips (they must have been hard to carve!). If you want to buy a great costume for trick or treating or a costume party then Peeks Party Store is the store for you. There is a wide range of costumes, accessories and different things to decorate your house with and are brilliant if you are trying to scare someone this Halloween. Last month I wrote about the Red House Museum in Christchurch. Well this month they want to create a haunted woodland walk in their gardens by creating spooky/scary decorations out of recycled, natural materials. Once it’s finished you can walk through the dark woods (if you dare!). Traditional pumpkin carving will also be taking place and you can choose to add your creation to the woodland to make it even spookier or take it home to light at night to scare off unwanted guests. Mum’s the Word I’ve always been one for a theme, be it birthdays, Christmas, or for this month, Halloween. October is a busy month for us here at the Christchurch Detachment as we work with our new recruits to get their drill skills up to scratch in preparation for next month’s Remembrance Day commemorations. The parade through the town to the Priory is a proud moment for the Cadets and their family members who turn up to watch them as they pay tribute to those who have sacrificed so much so we can have the freedoms we have today. We don’t just focus on the drill but also the historical context of the whole day so the Cadets have a full understanding of the occasion. October also sees us keeping busy with Cadets taking part in a swimming competition in Aldershot on the 10th and our 2* Cadets practicing their map reading skills whilst undertaking a Navigation and Expedition weekend 9th - 11th. We will also be heading off for a Company Weekend of training 16th-18th, following on from our summer Annual Camp we’ll build on the skills and experience gained there with more exciting activities to challenge the Cadets and increase their knowledge and skills.

TUCKTONIA: THE LAST DAYS OF TUCKTONIA Written by Alex McKinstry
In 1985, the owners of the Tuckton Leisure Park, Tucktonia Ltd, decided to sell their Stour Road premises for housing purposes, in order to raise funds to relocate elsewhere.
not quite the end of the Tucktonia story, as we shall see in next month’s issue.
“We cannot expand where we are,” the company’s finance director, Tex Rainger, told the ‘Echo’ of 25 October. “There is no space available for major new rides, and we don’t have enough parking space in high summer.” The company hoped to sell with planning permission, and on 12 March 1986 Christchurch Borough Council said it was “likely to give favourable consideration” to any housing proposals for the site. Costain Homes expressed an interest, and on 2 September 1986 Tex was able to issue a further statement: “Tucktonia has been sold for development, and will close before Christmas for good.”
The other relic to survive the fun park’s closure for a few years, at least - was the Golfers’ Arms (pictured below), which had started life as the Tuckton Golf Course café and clubhouse back in 1955.
Efforts to clear the site had started in the autumn of 1985, when the model steam trains - including the much-loved Tinkerbell, which had operated at Tuckton since 1979 - were moved to the newly laid-out country park at Moors Valley. The remaining attractions were dismantled the following autumn: the giant fun slide was sold to the Rotunda Amusement Park at Folkestone, while the more portable features were cleared by way of a site auction. (A great many Tucktonia tea-towels were shifted around this time.) No offers had been put in for the model village at this stage, and as the ‘Echo’ reported on 4 October 1986, it was unclear what the company’s next move would be. Peter Arnold, the managing director, recalls visiting several alternative locations in the months that followed. Then, an event took place that wiped out any imminent prospect of the fun park’s revival. This was a fire that broke out on 10 October 1990 at the Ebblake Trading Estate in Verwood, where the model village had been put into storage. (The building had failed a safety check a few months previously.) So intense was the blaze that it melted a £10,000 Bentley stored in an adjoining unit; it was four hours before the flames could be brought under control. Only one model escaped the devouring element: Buckingham Palace, which now sits in a display case at the Merrivale Model Village in Great Yarmouth. Tucktonia Ltd had already entered liquidation by this stage, and was dissolved on 18 February 1992, though that was 46 • Christchurch Eye • October 2015
This was sold to Bass Breweries in 1986 and renamed The Old Colonial, though it did little business - unsurprisingly, as it was surrounded by a building site throughout its first few years. When work on The Meridians was complete, the pub was renovated to the point where it resembled a brand new building, painted cream, with fluorescent signage, and relaunched as ‘Bar Max’ (pictured below), a watering-hole for
younger persons - but it continued to trade at a loss. Eventually it was sold to McCarthy & Stone (Developments) Ltd, who built retirement flats on the site in 2003. THE BOO CHARITY
This month 18 local businessmen and residents will partake in a 400-mile cycle across France as part of a campaign started in Poole four years ago. Tom and Josh Arkell of Cobra Ribs, Malcom Jewell of Marshals Accountants, Chris Lewis of Coastline and Andy Wentworth of Revampavan, as well as Christchurch residents Simon White, Chris Webber and Jeremy Gill will embark on a charity bike ride which commences in Perpignan at the end of September. Over the last four years the group has expanded from the original four cyclists going from Poole to Paris, Paris to Bordeaux, Bordeaux to Perpignan and are now looking to complete the next stretch from Perpignan to Monaco. The journey contains an overall climb of around 10,000 feet, including the infamous Mount Ventoux. The reason for all of this mileage is to raise money for the Boo Charity, a cause which all involved in this challenge feel strongly about. ‘Boo’ was founded by Russell Hicks (one of the 18 cyclists) in honour of his wife Sarah, who sadly lost her life to cancer at the age of 36. Russell and Sarah – affectionately nicknamed ‘Boo’ by friends and family – went to Kenya in search of a cure for her illness and in the process fell in love with the country and above all else, the Kenyan children. Sarah was taken aback by the Kenyan children’s struggle to survive the ravages of daily life and deemed their situation worse than her own.
The Boo Charity was later established in Sarah’s memory to help her vision become a reality. The aim of Boo is to help African children who are disadvantaged through economic poverty. The overriding principle & ethos of Boo is to provide children with care, whilst nurturing and developing opportunities to lift them from poverty so that they no longer need to rely on charity.
