I’d like to welcome Peter Watson-Lee, President of Christchurch Chamber of Trade & Commerce as our new business columnist. Peter will be keeping us up to date with how our local Chamber is working hard to help bring positive changes whilst also supporting local businesses, helping our town to continue to grow and thrive. Peter’s first topic is that of the car parking charges within Christchurch, which I found to be quite an eyebrow raiser as I’m sure you will too. This month’s recipe is a gorgeous gluten-free lemon drizzle cake made with mash potatoes.Yes, you heard me right, mash potatoes! Sounds obscure but I promise you will not be disappointed. Turn to page 40 to follow this simple recipe and surprise all your friends when you tell them the secret ingredient, it’s sure to be the talking point of your coffee morning! Happy Baking!
Congratulations to Mrs EH Butler and Mr Ron Mears for winning our July competitions! Coda Music Centre to transform derelict Victorian barn into a thriving community music hub
T
he Coda Music Centre is based in a former Victorian dairy farm in Walkford and has embarked on a longterm project of restoration and development of its buildings into a purpose designed music facility. The centre is run by the Coda Music Trust, a registered charity who offers unprecedented care to people of all ages and disabilities through the use of music. A new development is taking place at the Coda Music Centre transforming a derelict barn on the music centre farmland into a creative musical hub for the local community. The barn will be transformed into an attractive creative space that will work as a flexible workshop hub and social centre with a fully accessible toilet for people of all mobility alongside expanded kitchen facilities. Phil Hallett – Coda CEO has spoken about the site stating, “The potential for our site to grow as an inspirational, creative space for all sections of our local community,” he continues “It acts as a beacon for music and its value in learning, health and in society is what dives me as Chief Executive. It is a privileged asset that requires our love and attention.” Work to the new addition to the Coda Music Centre is due to be completed in November following £10,000 funds awarded to the trust from the Big Lottery Fund and additional charitable funding following a charity golf day at the Chewton Glen Hotel on Wednesday 11th September.

St Catherine’s Chapel It is popularly believed that Creedy Path through Druitt Gardens may have once been part of a medieval track between Christchurch Priory and the Leper Hospital of St Mary Magdalen, which stood on the road to Iford - but did Creedy Path once continue all the way to St Catherine’s Hill? This possibility is presented by an account of a ‘beating the bounds’ perambulation of the Old Borough undertaken in 1811, which records that ‘Creedy’s Cross at the north side of Fair Mile road’ led to St Catherine’s Hill. Over a century later in 1925 an article in the Bournemouth Daily Echo similarly identified the entrance to Town Common, located to the east of St Catherine’s Hill, as ‘about a mile from Christchurch at Creed’s Cross’. Were the town centre Creedy Path and this Creedy’s Cross in some way connected? Without more evidence this must remain nothing but an intriguing possibility. Regardless, if a stone cross did once stand in the vicinity of the present-day Marsh Lane car park it was probably to mark the route to the hilltop chapel dedicated to the 4th century martyr St Catherine of Alexandria. The local legend of a church-building project on the hill being abandoned after the building materials were repeatedly removed over-night is well-known. Might this legend recall an attempt by 7th century Christian missionaries to establish a first chapel - and the clandestine action taken by local residents opposed to this foreign imposition on their sacred hill? Although the church-builders were apparently ‘divinely’ persuaded to build elsewhere it seems that they did not entirely abandon their plans, because by the 11th century the canons of Christchurch had indeed succeeded in constructing a chapel. Nevertheless, the earliest known documented reference to its existence is not found until the early 14th century, when the Bishop of Winchester criticised the Prior of Christchurch for having built a new chapel on the hill (at that time called Richedon or ‘Great Hill’) without his knowledge.
St Catherine had been sentenced to be executed upon a spiked breaking wheel, so in iconography she is sometimes depicted with a sun-like ‘Catherine wheel’. This has led to the suspicion that she was chosen to supersede a pagan sun goddess formerly worshipped on the hill. However, the dedication of numerous hilltop chapels to St Catherine was probably inspired by the claimed discovery of the saint’s miraculously preserved body on Mount Sinai. Pilgrims unable to travel to St Catherine’s Monastery in Egypt could thereby visit a substitute chapel situated on a far more easily accessible hill. The chapel on Richedon probably fell into disuse after the dissolution of Christchurch Priory in 1539, leaving only a few bumps in the ground and a renamed hill. In the late 1960s the chapel site was excavated by a team led by local archaeologist Michael Ridley. In a near duplication of the disruption experienced by the medieval church-builders their efforts were hampered by vandals who chopped down fences, dug holes, and destroyed the wooden site office. Despite these challenges, their investigation found evidence for a succession of chapels constructed between the 11th and 16th centuries, each one apparently completely demolished and rebuilt. Eight different types of roof tile were recovered, and a similar variety of building stone, but possibly the most interesting find was a fragment of limestone decorated with the Christian symbol of a fish (Photo).
The Friends of St Catherine’s Hill, in association with Christchurch Countryside Service, are hosting a St Catherine’s Hill History Day on Sunday 29th September from 10.30am to 4.00pm. The event will take place near the concrete water reservoirs on the summit and present a range of activities promoting the rich history of the site. For more details about this and other events on St Catherine’s Hill contact Robin Harley (Christchurch Countryside Service) on 01425 272479 or r.harley@christchurch.gov.uk.

W
e all recognise how important it is for Christchurch to have a welcoming High Street and to create conditions for existing and new businesses to thrive in it. That’s not just me speaking – it’s a quote from Christchurch Borough Council’s own Corporate Plan.
Peter
It is such a shame that when it comes to setting parking fees, the Council’s good words go out the window. Maximum money collection from those who venture out to use our High Street is then the mantra. No matter what effect that might have on the town. A recent RAC report on the amounts Councils around the country reap from their car parks, Christchurch came in at 102 in the table of high netting Councils. But Christchurch is only a small Council and a little bit of maths shows that with the size of its population, the league toppers such as, say, Birmingham in fact raised £5.42 per resident; a very similar sum per head of population to the New Forest and to North Dorset. Christchurch? A massive £34.25 per head! As far as I can see, it’s the highest figure per head in the country. Castle Point and the supermarkets all know that free or low cost parking is what attracts customers. New Milton and Ringwood have their attractive “clock” system and both Bournemouth and Wimborne have a welcoming £1 for 2 hours policy. [This Magazine helped champion the Chamber of Trade’s “£1 for 2 hours” campaign last year and even with a petition of 5500 signatures – one of the largest the Council has ever had – the Council remained unmoved. Increasing their revenue trumped the needs of the high street and the clearly expressed wishes of their residents]. Why do I raise this now? Well this month sees the crucial Council Resources Committee that will start setting the parking rates for next year. Depressingly, increasing revenue yet further is still their stated aim. Let us hope there are some Councillors who will be brave enough to speak up for the needs of the town and wishes of the residents.

IBS affects around one third of people in the UK. Symptoms can include pain, bloating, wind, diarrhoea, constipation and indigestion. Struggling with IBS creates tension and anxiety which undermines your immune system and compromises your health. Due to the varied nature of symptoms it is often difficult to treat with medication, yet there is much you can do using your mind to ease your symptoms. Dietary changes can be beneficial also.

I wonder do you continue to ‘chew over’ certain issues or perhaps something in your life is a little hard to ‘digest’..? Our stomach is the storehouse of our emotion. Reducing emotional stress often helps to reduce spasms and cramps. Gut directed therapy works pro-actively to help you address the thoughts which stimulate IBS symptoms. Bespoke powerful visualisation helps you to influence bowel movement and to manage and reduce pain and discomfort caused by IBS. My unique and successful therapy programme brings support, structure and guidance to help manage and reduce the physical and emotional symptoms of IBS. For some therapy is the last option tried, but for many who have experienced the benefits, they would argue it should undoubtedly have been the first. What is your gut telling you?

Highcliffe Rotary Charity Fete
T
he President and Members of the Rotary Club of Highcliffe on Sea extend their grateful thanks to the people of Highcliffe for their support at the Charity Fete on Saturday 27th July. The day began with a dismal weather forecast but all was well at 10.45am when The Mayor of Christchurch, Cllr John Lofts accompanied by the Mayoress officially opened the fete. There were some 30 Charity Stalls from local organisations, 6 Local Business Stalls and static displays from the Fire Service, Police Service and Dorset Air Ambulance. In the arena your local Zumba Fitness Dance Group, Falcon High Flying Display and Bobby The Clown plus a selection of Children’s Races provided entertainment. Teas, Cakes and Sandwiches were provided by the Rotary Ladies and a selection of Barbeque food was available from the Rotary Corner in tandem with information about the service Rotary provides to the local community here in Highcliffe and throughout the World. Although cloudy the weather held until 4.00pm, which gave the various Charity, stalls a good chance to raise the much needed funds to support and fuel their chosen causes. We understand that collectively up to £12,000 was raised the majority of which will be ploughed back into a whole range of deserving causes in the Highcliffe area. Once again sincere thanks from the Rotary Club of Highcliiffe on Sea and should you wish to learn more about what we do and how you can help please call Secretary John Nicholls on 07774 216636 for a chat. Ring Ron on 07774 073866 for a quote Exhibition at The Hayloft Gallery There is still time to catch the colourful exhibition currently showing at the Hayloft Gallery 14 Wick Lane, Christchurch which finishes on 5 September. This varied exhibition showcases work from local artists Susan Knights, Linda Patterson, Ann Davison and Brenda Weeks and includes paintings, textiles, jewellery and cards. Sue is a member of the national ‘Society of Floral Painters’ and enjoys painting impressionistic flowers, landscapes and seascapes in a loose, exciting, expressive and atmospheric way. She also produces abstracted works. Sue really enjoys giving workshops in Watercolour at Stanpit Village Hall, a venue which overlooks Christchurch Harbour. The ‘Jump in and Get Wet’ classes are just that encouraging people to loosen up and experiment with lots of water and paint, creating loose exciting paintings! Linda works in most mediums and includes a variety of subject matter. She has a love of the natural world, painting many landscapes. These are emotive and derived from observed subject matter. Colour is an important element in her work. Brenda produces mixed media textile panels in a quirky style together with accessories such as jewellery and bags while Ann’s individual jewellery is created from semi-precious stones. Prices are very affordable ranging from £5 to £500 with cards priced from £1. The exhibition is open every day until 5pm.

s Summer slowly fades out along with the tan, Autumn nudges its way in and a new term beckons. Children are grudgingly prised out of their favourite shorts and tees and back into crisp new oversized uniforms. The Rachel tips of fingers just about poke out as new sleeves dangle somewhere near the knees, and starchy trousers scuff along the bottom of squeaky new shoes, seemingly twice the size of the old pair and bringing Ivo the Clown to mind.
I must admit, I do not enjoy the annual shop for uniform, especially for girls. For boys, a pair of trousers is simply a pair of trousers - they’re all pretty much the same, and as long as they don’t fall down they’re happy. For girls, a skirt is most definitely not just a skirt. It appears to have become a fashion statement and an indicator of ‘coolness’ judging by how short it is, on a rating scale of ‘below-the-knee-ha-you-must-be-joking long’ to ‘home-shortened-then-rolled-I-can-seewhat-you-had-for-lunch short’. I figure if I can persuade my girls into something in between the two I’ll be doing ok! For me, buying new uniform has always been a milestone in the year. The clothes get bigger, they move up a year, personalities develop, confidence grows, and first day back at school nerves give way to excited chatter about seeing old friends and making new ones. This year as I buy just one set of uniform for my youngest, and send another child to college and the eldest to work, I’m reminded of just how quickly they do grow up — and to enjoy every short-skirted, heart stopping moment of every stage! Have a great month! An English Mum x

Poetry Corner by CCC Poets Autumn 1 by Karlina St Vincent Chrysanthemum curled, I crouch Cat warm, in cushioned chair, Velour enveloped against the acrid air, Soft, sibilant, gas glows, gives light, Thin foggy rags drift winding Round the night. Frost crushed, outside, A dahlia blackly grieves, Droops wetly down To dripping grass speared leaves. Moist autumn rots and moulds The summer fruit, Life hibernates Deep coiled in wintry root. Small flames lick, Flicker underneath the snow, Cold earth consumed, Point bright in spring to grow. Mist grey, blood berried And leaf swirled, Charcoal dark autumn, Heat at heart close curled.

Home Sellers Need To Get Packing
W
e’re lucky to live in such a desirable part of the world and the higher-than-UK-average value of our homes reflects this. With properties being in demand, it should be easy to get a quick sale when it’s time to move on but this isn’t always the case. According to Jo Rimmer from The Home Sales Clinic, there’s an art to getting a quick sale at the best price and it can be an emotional process. “We all love our homes. They are full of memories, family photographs and treasured knick knacks that reflect our lifestyles. Unfortunately, the very items you cherish can be the things that get in the way of a sale, with potential buyers unable to visualise how they would live in the property once you’ve moved out. One way to prepare your home for sale is to pare down your personal effects but retain a warm and welcoming atmosphere.” Estate agents may give feedback before they market a property but many hold back in case they give offence and send a potential customer off to a rival agent. But the asking price set by estate agents reflects how saleable the property looks, so it’s important they are impressed with what they see when they first come to make a valuation. The Home Sales Clinic specialises in preparing homes for sale, providing independent assessments and practical advice that ensure properties are dressed to sell. Christchurch resident celebrates 100 year milestone
L
ast week, a Christchurch resident celebrated her 100th birthday at Care South’s Queensmead care home, with family who had flown in especially from America for the occasion. Muriel Rae celebrated the day in style, having gone shopping beforehand for a special outfit and treating herself to a manicure and hairdressing session on the day to ensure she was looking her best. Her son, David, her daughter-in-law and one of her three granddaughters, who currently live in America, greeted Muriel. They took her out for a birthday meal at The Fisherman’s Haunt, a local hotel, where 30 friends and family members joined her. Born in 1913 in Mountain Ash, Wales, Muriel moved to London to work in service at the age of 14. She moved to Bournemouth a few years later to work as a waitress in a local hotel with her aunt, and went on to run a boarding house on Holdenhurst Road. She worked there until she retired, when she moved to Highcliffe to make the most of the sunshine! At Queensmead, Muriel enjoys sitting in the sun, chatting with her friends and popping into town to do some shopping – and to treat herself to her favourite sweet milky coffee and chocolate pastry. Janine May, Home Manager at Queensmead, said: “It was lovely to be able to spend Muriel’s landmark birthday with her - it was a really special day. She’s a much-loved resident at Queensmead and she’s made lots of friends. We were delighted, as she was, that David and his family could make it from America and celebrate the big day with her!”

Do you have an idea for a local project for the over 50’s?
D
orset Partnership for Older People Programme (POPP) is a partnership between older people, voluntary organisations, Dorset County Council, and the NHS Clinical Commissioning Group. It exists to help develop supportive neighbourhoods using the skills and knowledge of older people to identify both issues and solutions at a local level. Do you have an idea for a local project for the over 50’s? It could be an exercise class, or a coffee morning, a lunch club, an art or craft activity; it could be a reading or book club, or an environmental activity, a memory club, singing group, or a cookery class. It could also be a new opportunity to support people with a service or with information, or something quite different to any of these ideas! Projects supported in Christchurch and Highcliffe include: Phoenix Fellowship for Widowers; Homelands Activity Group; The New Horizons Widows’ Group; the newly formed Highcliffe Male Carers’ Group and Breatheasy Support Group. You might already be involved in a group that wants to develop their activities, or want to offer your services as a volunteer, or set up something new! POPP has Community Development Workers based in the East, West and Central Dorset areas who are working with the Local POPP ‘Champions’ and ‘Wayfinders’. We may also be able to provide funding or identify other resources that you may need.

“We Promise to do our Best for Scouting in Christchurch
Why would six people volunteer to take on more? Simple - because they enjoy it!
ĆŻ Ţ Ƈ Ĺą ĆŞ Ć? ƤĹ? Ć&#x; ĹĄĆ?
Scouting in Christchurch gives nearly 600 young people, fun, friends and adventure. And it’s the same for the adults. The adventure might be trying out abseiling with the Scouts, or getting covered in glue with the Beavers, perhaps going to Ireland with the Explorers. Or it might be entering new territory with an excel spreadsheet to make the accounts balance, or planning an expedition to the local fire station, or navigating creatively through an agenda with new friends.
Christchurch Scouting is on another adventure with a new team at the helm. Playing to their strengths and promising to ‘do their best’, Brett and the team have carved up the role previously held by only one person and are determined to make a difference to the young people and adults in Christchurch Scouting. It’s not so hard though after 103 years of continuous scouting and a wonderful group of 225 adult volunteers who are already making a difference. Brett’s hand is on the helm and as he embraces his new adventure, he says; “this is a great opportunity to get more people of all ages involved in scouting. I am really grateful for all the support that is given to make Scouting so strong in Christchurch. We look forward to welcoming more volunteers into the Scouting family. Were you a Scout? Has Scouting ever appealed to you? Do you have a skill and a willingness to join in and learn? If you want to get involved, get in touch on getinvolved@christchurchscouts.org.uk

New plaque reveals history of Christchurch ducking stool
V
isitors to the replica ducking stool at Christchurch can now find out more about the history of the device with a new plaque installed there thanks to Christchurch Antiquarian Society and Christchurch Council. Members of the Antiquarian Society were carrying out archaeological digs in a garden on the other side of the stream from the ducking stool and were able to hear visitors coming to view the stool asking questions about it. Bev Miller from the Antiquarian Society said: “It was obvious that people were intrigued by the history behind the ducking stool and we wondered if the Council realised quite how many visitors came to see it. Bev approached town centre ward councillor Gillian Geary offering for the Antiquarian Society to do some research to provide an information plaque and Gillian asked Tourism Manager, Ann Simon, if the plaque could be funded from the Council’s tourism budget. The plaque now explains that, contrary to popular belief, it is unlikely that ducking stools were used to identify witches. Rather they were reserved for ‘scolds’ – women found guilty of verbal abuse, brawling or other antisocial behaviour. Although the mill stream where the chair is now sited is very shallow, it would have been much deeper when the original stool was in use. It is possible that the stream widened at this point to form a pond into which the stool was plunged. Tourism Manager, Ann Simon said: “We’re very grateful to the members of the Antiquarian Society for researching the information which has been written on the plaque. I’m sure visitors to Christchurch will find the history behind the stool fascinating.
THE DUCKING STOOL The  earliest  documented  evidence  for  a  ducking  stool  in  Christchurch  is  in  the  Borough  Records  dating  from  the  mid-Â14th  century.  In  May  1350  a  property  deed  mentioned  ! " ! ".  This  is  believed  to  be  the  punishment  device  now  more  commonly  known  as  a  ducking  stool.  It  consisted  of  a  chair,  into  which  the  victim  was  tied,  fixed  to  the  end  of  a  wooden  beam  that  could  be  lowered  into  water.  The  ducking  stool  was  almost  exclusively  reserved  for  scolds   women  found  guilty  of  verbal  abuse,  brawling  or  other  anti-Âsocial  behaviour.  The  culprit  was  raised  and  lowered  into  the  stream  as  often  as  the  sentence  directed.  It  was  a  means  of  public  ridicule  and  humiliation.  Other  local  punishments  involved  whipping  through  the  market,  exposure  in  the  stocks,  pillory  and  whirly-Âgig  (a  type  of  spinning  cage).   Contrary  to  popular  belief,  it  is  unlikely  that  ducking  stools  were  ever  used  in  Britain  for  identifying  witches.  The  last  recorded  use  of  a  ducking  stool  in  England  was  in  1809.  In  1986  a  replica  ducking  stool  was  made  and  erected  close  to  its  original  position  as  part  of  the  centennial  festival  " s  of  Christchurch.  It  is  not  known  what  the  original  looked  like  as  designs  varied  considerably  through  time  and  from  place  to  place.  The  mill  stream  has  silted  up  over  the  years  and  would  have  been  much  deeper  when  the  original  stool  was  in  use.  It  is  possible  that  the  stream  widened  at  this  point  to  form  a  pond  into  which  the  stool  was  plunged.   Information  provided  by  The  Christchurch  Antiquarians Â

Christchurch Community Band Thrives with Local Support
T
he Christchurch and District Band have been bowled over by support from the local community. It was formed only in February of this year but already has over 40 members. They do not charge subscription or membership fees and all monies raised go directly back into the band for instruments and music etc. It is a not for profit organisation. In its short time much has been achieved; leading the St Georges Day Parade in Bournemouth, performing at Burton Veterans Day, 75th Anniversary of Christchurch Bandstand and more. The band are also traveling to one of Christchurchs’ twin towns, Aalen in Germany, in September to perform at their Beer Festival. They will be performing with the local pipe band and concert band whom they already have strong links with. November 3rd will be the bands biggest local performance, The Christchurch Festival of Remembrance – For Queen and Country at the Regent Centre (proceeds from the Raffle going to the Royal British Legion Poppy Appeal). Tickets on sale now from the Regent Centre Box Office (01202 499199) The band always welcomes additional members. Travel & Holiday claims …for accidents, injuries or illness abroad, including travel by air and sea Travelling by air or by sea, for most of us, is the way we get to our foreign holiday destinations. Whilst both are safe modes of transport, unfortunately individuals can still be injured by accidents or affected by illness when using them. Travel operators must take reasonable measures to ensure the safety of their passengers at all times, however, if rules are breached – resulting in an injury or illness – then you may be entitled to compensation. You may have been affected by illness due to poor hygiene standards on board or even food poisoning. You may make a claim for compensation against a holiday company for an accident, injury or illness which occurred abroad if the holiday was booked as part of a package deal through a travel agent in the UK. Your holiday accident, injury, or illness would need to be the fault of the travel agent or their representatives, such as the hotel staff. There are strict time limits in place to make any holiday injury claim.
