Just before term starts I have to drag my 3 boys from Barber shop to barber shop in search of one without endless queues only to have a shoddy cut as they feel rushed to deal with demand. At the beginning of the High Street, they can be easily missed, but having walked past we went in and were pleasantly surprised with only a couple of people waiting. Touching the 12th Century at Place Mill Christchurch’s unique character has been shaped by its long history - so says Phil Tate, organiser of this year’s commemoration of the town’s historic St Faith’s Fair. The free event, to be held at Place Mill on Christchurch Quay on Saturday 9th October from 11.00am until 4.00pm, provides a glimpse of the everyday lives of the town’s medieval residents with music, games, crafts, and historical exhibits

Mudeford Wood Community Centre to be managed by the community Following discussions between Christchurch Council and the Friends of Mudeford Wood (FoMW), an initial agreement has been reached that will keep Mudeford Wood Community Centre open and managed by the community. A consultation carried out by the Council concerning the future of the facility resulted in the creation of FoMW who mounted a campaign to keep the Centre open. The agreement will lead to the drafting of a business plan allowing FoMW to take over the running of the facilities within two years.

TUCKTONIA A nostalgic look back on Tucktonia Christchurch’s 1970’s miniature town

ne of my fondest childhood memories within Christchurch is Tucktonia. We didn’t have Chessington, Thorpe Park or Paulton’s then. Tucktonia was the only equal to these theme parks and it was right here on our doorstep. A generation of Dorset children brought up in the 1970s remember the Tucktonia theme park with great affection. But 10 years after it opened in 1976, the park suddenly closed. The owners of Tucktonia wanted to build a roller coaster at the rear of the park, but were refused permission by the local council. Not long after this the park closed. Today the site, in Christchurch, is a housing estate with no traces of the theme park remaining (Although it is rumoured that amongst the hedges you may find the remains of the turning circle for the Motorway). A newspaper article revealed that the entire model village was destroyed in a fire within a warehouse on Verwood Industrial Estate. However one model survives... this being Buckingham Palace which was acquired, restored and put on display at the Wimborne Model Town, Wimborne Minster in 2002 and moved to Merrivale Model Village, Great Yarmouth in 2006. Tucktonia was located on Stour Road. It originally occupied 4 acres of the 21-acre Tuckton Park Leisure Complex. The park was closed down in 1986, having become rather run-down and neglected, with the buildings and fixtures being cleared and the land used for

residential building and a public house called "Bar Max" and then ‘The Old Colonial’, later to become retirement ﬂats. The park was best known for its large model village layout, which included a representation of London. It was billed as 'Best of Britain in Miniature' and as the country's biggest tourist attraction after The Tower of London, it was thought to be the largest model landscape of its kind in Europe. Built to a scale of 1:24, Tucktonia was a fully intergrated living spectacle with a complex railway system, motorways, waterways, commercial airports, airport trafﬁc and other animated features controlled by sophisticated electronic equipment. The park included a 7.25-inch narrow gauge ride-on steam train that had operated there since 1980 but following the closure of Tucktonia it was moved to the Moors Valley Railway in the

Moors Valley Country Park near Ringwood, Hampshire. The Moors Valley Railway opened to the public at the end of July 1986, using much of the equipment— locomotives, rolling stock, some trackwork and workshop machinery moved from Tucktonia during the previous September and October. Tucktonia was the brainchild of former double British Formula 3 champion Harry Stiller who still lives in the area. ‘I originally bought the land in 1961 when it was just a big open field. In 1972 I opened what was then the ‘Tuckton Park Golf & Leisure Centre’ and went on to sell it in 1975 to Watneys Grand Metropolitan. I was fortunate enough to find Paul Taylor, a gardener (who later became Head Gardener) at Tucktonia who had started working there within the first few months of it’s opening in 1976 up until 6 months before it closed in 1986. ‘I left Tucktonia when I had heard that the place was being knocked down and I couldn’t bear to see that. For many of us, working at Tucktonia had become an obsession. We enjoyed being there so much, there was always so much to do and we loved looking after the place. For many a year I worked a 70 hour week on a Basic rate and during the summer season I would work nights too and sleep on the floor of the Arcade with the Security dogs until my day shift would start. My wife and I were saving up for our first flat. I lived on Proplus and Beer to keep me going all those hours, I rarely saw my wife!’ Paul goes on to say ‘Within the Tucktonia Guides there was a questionnaire for visitors to fill in. We always received wonderful comments; one in particular I remember read ’I recently visited Compton Acres to see the flowers but was quite disappointed then I came here to see the models and loved the flowers even better!’’. Paul was very proud of his horticulture at Tucktonia and his love of gardening was plain for all to see. Paul grew all the plants himself from seed starting in the winter months making for an all year round job. Paul is still in the gardening trade with his own business now, P & R Landscapes. Christchurch Mayor congratulates couple in first Chamber wedding The Mayor of Christchurch, Cllr Nick Geary, stepped in at the end of the ﬁrst ever wedding performed at Christchurch’s Council Chamber to congratulate the couple. Claire Edmed and Steven Lee were presented with a certiﬁcate marking the historic occasion along with a bottle of champagne. The ceremony came about following approval by Christchurch Council for the Chamber to be used for civil ceremonies and Dorset Registration Service being granted a licence to use the venue by Dorset County Council.

It was all a bit of a rush as we’d originally planned to go abroad but then had to change our plans.”

Although there are other venues licensed in Christchurch for civil ceremonies, including Highcliffe Castle and some hotels, this is the ﬁrst Register Ofﬁce Ceremony Room in the Borough.

The Mayor added: “I’m really happy that our Council Chamber is now available for residents of Christchurch to hold their weddings here. Previously people would have had to travel outside the Borough to have a ceremony at a Register Ofﬁce, now they can stay closer to home.”

Steven Lee said: “It’s great that we were able to have the option of using the Council Chamber.

The Chamber will be available for ceremonies every other Saturday during the year.

Recipe Roasted Pumpkin Soup Note: You’ll need a pumpkin which weighs about 1.5Kg for this recipe.

Ingredients 3-5 medium cloves garlic, unpeeled 1kg (2lbs) pumpkin, peeled and deseeded Olive oil 1 large onion, finely chopped 1/2 teaspoon ground nutmeg 1 teaspoon ground cumin Salt and pepper, to taste 1 litre (1 3/4 pints) vegetable or chicken stock Cream, for serving (optional) Freshly grated nutmeg, or chilli flakes for serving (optional)

If you’ve ever wondered what else you can do with a pumpkin other than make a Halloween Lantern, try our rich, golden, tasty soup.

Method Preheat oven to 190C / Gas mark 5. Chop the pumpkin into even-sized chunks (about 5cm / 2 inches across). Place the pumpkin with the unpeeled garlic cloves in a roasting tin. Drizzle with a little oil and toss to coat the pieces. Bake in the oven. Check after 20 minutes and remove the garlic at that point and set it aside. Roast the pumpkin until it’s soft and tender. Be careful not to burn it. Heat a teaspoon of oil in large (at least 2.7 litre capacity) saucepan over medium heat. Add onion, nutmeg, cumin, salt and pepper. Fry gently, stirring, until the onion is just softened slightly. Add the roasted pumpkin and stock and bring to the boil. Reduce heat and simmer, uncovered, until onion is completely soft and the stock has reduced a little. The more the stock reduces, the thicker the soup will be and the more concentrated the flavour. Season to taste. Peel the roasted garlic and add it to the soup. Remove from the heat and allow to cool for about half an hour before pureeing in batches in a blender. WHAT’S ON OFFER IN CHRISTCHURCH? By Julie Ratcliffe One way that some towns try to encourage visitors and tempt new business is with loyalty schemes. In Christchurch, there are schemes to provide consumers with special deals and discounts. There’s Christchurch Eye’s Privilege Club and the Chamber of Trade scheme, A Better Deal, where people can receive an email in which shops and businesses list their offers. A recent edition had 14 special offers and 26 regular discounts available for a variety of goods and services. But is this enough to encourage people to shop and do business in Christchurch? Shops in particular can take advantage of crowdpulling fairs and festivals and the Chamber of Trade’s Christmas shop window display competition encourages this by providing winning businesses with a trophy, some free publicity and an invitation to the Chamber’s Annual Dinner at the Captain’s Club. Making shop windows inviting is one thing but a concerted effort is needed to make the town itself appealing. Improvements are being made to Saxon Square and it’s encouraging to read that the Council is to undertake a blitz on litter and wants to work with businesses in this task. Unfortunately enforcement doesn’t appear to work but community litter picks and volunteers tidying up the town are good examples of where pride in a community can make a difference. A tidy town is an attractive one, so do businesses have a role? Yes, making businesses look attractive can include sweeping the pavement outside and providing a bin, especially fast food and drinks ﬁrms, and a number of businesses do this. And maybe business input into the clean-up will produce greater understanding between the issues and the solution. But wouldn’t it be great if people had enough loyalty to their town not to drop litter in the ﬁrst place. R.I.P. Personal Service? Dear Editor, I enjoyed the article by Mr. OrchestonMatthews in August’s Christchurch Eye. I didn’t realize until then that I was a G.O.M. (Grumpy Old Man). My G.O.M. pet hate is about how the internet seems to have taken personal service out of the picture. Christchurch has many fine shops with knowledgeable, enthusiastic and patient staff. I visit Castles when I want a grommety-type fixing for an oojamaflip or the Bay Tree when I think I need vitamin supplements. Try having a conversation with EBay or Amazon and relying on their suggestions when you’re not quite sure what you need! The magic of personal service is that someone listens to what you say; interprets the information and provides the solution on the spot. Hardware, vitamins, clothes, food – it doesn’t matter what you want – the principle is the same. The internet is ideal if you know exactly what you want and trust the company behind the web site. While online I still have to suffer unrelated “pop up” adverts inviting me to join virtual casinos and, on a recent occasion, “meet hot single girls from Russia” – very disconcerting if all you want is to order a new belt for the vacuum cleaner. Quite frankly I don’t care if I have to pay a bit more for good old fashioned service and I hope real shops will be around as long as I am. Always remember – If you smile at a computer – it won’t smile back! Anon

Teen Column: Mudeford beach is a beautiful place. It has its history of Hengistbury Head, its sea defences and of course, over 300 beach huts worth an average of £100,000 each. So what makes them so special?

We've had a beach hut as a family for 6 years now. When people ask, we say we brought it with our hearts, not our heads. It’s a fairly large size, with an upstairs which can sleep about 5 people comfortably. Everyone's is different, but we all share the same experience. There really is no other place in the world I would rather spend my summer. One of the best things about being at the beach hut is how it’s so relaxing. It washes all your worries away and lets you enjoy the sun, sea and sand without actually going on holiday. When you wake up in the morning, you can eat your cereals with the sun coming up. You can lie on the beach while it’s quiet. You can relax. And when the sun goes down again, and everyone leaves, you can enjoy a bbq and drinks with family and friends. There is always something to do as well. From kayaking to swimming, to bodyboarding and sunbathing. I've grown up with people and shared hundreds of memories. The best part is the people you meet. There are people from all different ages and backgrounds but everyone seems to be one big community. You can stroll into someone else’s hut and spend hours talking and laughing and enjoying life. You meet friends who will be for life.
