Sunshine at last! It’s amazing how much the sunshine can affect our lives in such a positive way, seeing everyone smiling and generally lifting everyone’s spirits. More of us are venturing out either to appreciate all the fabulous beauty spots we are fortunate enough to have here on our doorstep or to treat ourselves to a bit of shopping on our local High Streets. Please remember the importance of spending a little of your weekly spend locally – If every adult in BH23 spent £5 of their weekly spend locally, an amazing £8.2 million would be kept within our local economy each year. Wow, that really is a difference worth thinking about don’t you think? New this month, we have our ‘Community Notices’. The 1953 Coronation
T
he 2nd June 1953 has gone down in history as the date the British public discovered television! On that day 60 years ago the country celebrated the Coronation of Queen Elizabeth II and an estimated 27 million people watched the ceremony by the new medium of ‘T/V’. How did Christchurch celebrate this historic occasion? Whereas earlier Coronations had seen the town busy with people, in 1953 the Christchurch Times – which could proudly claim to have been in print through six reigns – reported that the streets of Christchurch were mainly deserted. A combination of bad weather and the coverage on TV had kept most people indoors. Televisions generously loaned by Jarvis Radio had even been installed in the Town Hall for the benefit of ‘the old folks’, though the High Street was apparently one of the worst places for good reception. Over 400 people watched a special large-screen projection set installed in the British Legion Hall in Bargates. Residents had been encouraged to avoid using electrical equipment during the ceremony to prevent causing interference, and many motorists had fitted suppressors to their cars. The bus companies, however, had apparently been more reluctant to introduce such costly precautions, estimating that the numerous spark producing ‘points’ in the overhead trolley-bus wires would each cost up to five guineas to suppress – even the bus bells and windscreen wipers were a potential source of interference! Although the afternoon saw some street parties braving the strong cold wind, the only official event was a fete held on the Barrack Road Recreation Ground. As part of this celebration, sponsored by the British Legion, Mayor Kenneth Ashcroft and Alderman John W Tucker planted several oak trees along the Barrack Road edge of the Ground. A programme of sporting events occupied the afternoon, then at twilight a torchlight procession of Scouts, Guides, and other youth organisations made its way to St Catherine’s Hill. At 10 o’clock
the Mayor lit a bonfire to join those to be seen blazing on the Purbecks, Hengistbury Head, the Isle of Wight, and at Highcliffe. In town, the Priory Church, Castle Keep, and Constable’s House were all illuminated by the searchlight unit of the Territorial Army, and the evening ended with a firework display on Christchurch Quay. A longer-lasting memorial of the Coronation was the construction of Druitt Hall behind Christchurch Library. This innovative prefabricated building was designed by local engineer and inventor Stanley Kermode and was primarily intended to provide welfare facilities for old people - Stanley Kermode was later awarded an MBE for his services to the elderly of Christchurch. The cost of £3,000 was funded entirely by public subscriptions and it took local firm Bryant & Trowbridge only 10 weeks to construct. Druitt Hall was officially opened by Mayor Ashcroft the day after the Coronation. It was therefore either apt or ironic, depending on your point of view, that in 2012 the Council announced that the Hall would be demolished in March 2013, mere weeks before the 60th anniversary of the Coronation it was built to commemorate! However, that decision was subsequently reappraised and the future of Druitt Hall as a town centre amenity is presently under ongoing discussion. A clock presented by Christchurch British Legion to celebrate the Coronation still hangs in Druitt Hall (Photo) and continues to display the passing minutes of the Second Elizabethan Age – or perhaps of the TV Age?
The Druitt Hall’s Diamond Jubilee will be celebrated on Monday 3 June 2013, 9.30am to 4.00pm. Come along for refreshments and locally produced crafts, cards, and plants - and the Country Markets’ famous cakes! The Hall will be decked out with bunting and feature a display charting its past and present as a town centre meeting place. Do you have memories and perhaps even photographs of the early days of the Hall? Why not share them over an inexpensive cup of tea or coffee and a plate of scones and help record the local cultural history of the town’s prominent memorial to the 1953 Coronation. WELCOME TO CHRISTCHURCH Christchurch made the national media in the spring when a trader spoke openly that his business actually suffered due to tourists. This created a huge debate. Not every businesses benefits directly from tourism, however it is a vital industry for the Borough. As the main tourist season begins, here are some facts.*

Each year Christchurch accommodates nearly 1 million staying visitor nights, generating £42.3 million. Over 1 million people visit Christchurch for a day trip, spending £38.6 million. Within these figures £13 million is spent in shops and £16 million on food and drink. Altogether, tourism is worth over £84 million to Borough’s economy and 11% of the workforce is employed due to tourism. To keep this vital income it is imperative that the town is kept attractive. By this I mean both visually, places to visit and by holding as wide a range of events as possible to keep people wanting to come back for more. This will be achieved not solely by the council, but by community effort. The Borough’s parks, gardens and floral displays are amongst the best in the country. Businesses can help the Council in these efforts through sponsorship and having baskets and flags where appropriate. Litter needs to be controlled, not only on shopping streets, but throughout the borough and especially its entrances. Businesses can ensure their premises are appealing and welcoming. Accessibility, cleanliness and great service are essential. Christchurch is a very active town with literally hundreds of community groups. From these, dozens of great events are organised by volunteers and held for residents and visitors alike. These also provide opportunities for all businesses to promote and showcase their goods and services. Christchurch should welcome its visitors and give them a positive experience, so that they will enjoy their time here, want to return and happily recommend Christchurch to others.

South Dorset Ridgeway Circular – 4.5 Km 1. Follow the path out of the corner of the pub car park across the field to the stone stile. 2. G over the stile, turn right and after 150 metres, turn left into Little Hill.
5. Follow this left, through the gate and down the centre of the valley. After another two gates, head down for the telegraph post in the centre, then bear right down to the right-hand gate of the 2 gates in the bottom right corner of the field. 6. This brings you into a pleasant picnic area and continue down to the gate at the road. 7. Turn left here and walk down the road on the right-hand side for 100 metres where you will see a footpath sign on your left leading up a tarmac drive. 8. Go along this drive, keeping left, then along the grassy lane, through the gate, across the top of the garden and proceed straight ahead for ½ mile to meet the junction at the start of your earlier ascent up to the ridgeway.
3. Continue up the gradual ascent until you meet the track jus as the ascent has finished. 4. Turn left here and follow the track to the left along to the 3-way finger sign with Upwey and Wishing Well 1 mile to your left.

Mudeford Wood Community Centre Family Fun Day
O
n Saturday 8th June the volunteers and trustees of Mudeford Wood Community Centre are holding their second annual Family Fun Day from 10am to 4pm. With a theme of Superheroes and Princesses, children are encouraged to enter the fancy dress competition and enjoy the bouncy castles, face painting, and the various stalls and games. There will be a BBQ, refreshments, Grand Prize Draw and hopefully pony rides. The first family Fun Day in April 2012 raised over £1,700 and now the charitable trust running the centre is ramping up fundraising efforts to refurbish and improve centre facilities. The aim is to raise £49,000 to replace and enlarge the kitchen area by this Summer, and trustees hope proceeds from the Fun Day will go some way towards the outstanding £21,000 needed. Various fundraising events and grants secured from local community initiatives have already raised over £28,000. Stage two of the refurbishment plans, subject to planning permission, would see the current changing room areas completely refurbished and extended, providing greatly improved facilities for a number of the user groups. his month I have a confession and a challenge for you.
Confession first (don’t worry, it doesn’t involve dropping goats down a well or anything else worthy of getting on Rachel Simon Mayo’s show). No, my confession is that, despite living in Christchurch for over 20 years, I have only just visited Avon Beach for the first time! I always knew Christchurch had a beach, and I’ve been sunburnt while crabbing at Mudeford Quay on plenty of occasions, but I had never actually been to the beach part. I hang my head in shame. Avon Beach is definitely not the 7 miles of golden sands of Bournemouth. However, it is very interesting. There are lots of shells to rummage through and rocks to investigate, and a fresh, raw smell of the sea that urges you to have fish and chips for tea. Little green beach huts cradle the bay and look out across to the stunning view of the Isle of Wight, which is so close you almost feel like you could swim to the Needles. (I strongly suggest not trying this unless you are a fish.) Little boats bob in and out of the harbour, adventurous types bump over the crossing tides on jet skis and canoes, and the really brave blow around on wind and kite surfboards. When all that gets too exhausting to watch any longer, there’s a cafe to warm up in too! So, here is my challenge – however long you have been here, why not try and do something locally that you haven’t done before? Maybe you’ve never visited Avon Beach either! Perhaps you’ve always meant to climb up the ruins near the Priory but have never got around to it? Or maybe you’ve never been on the ferry boat across the river, or seen the view from The Priory tower. Have you walked up St Catherine’s Hill or visited the Red House Museum or Place Mill? There are lots more I haven’t mentioned – if you have a favourite local place you would like to share, why not pop it on our Facebook page (search under ‘Christchurch Eye’) for others to see. Ingredients For the cake 225g/8oz unsalted butter, plus extra for greasing 225g/8oz caster sugar 4 free-range eggs 50ml/1¾fl oz strong espresso coffee 225g/8oz self-raising flour 75g/2½oz walnuts For the butter cream topping 125g/4½oz unsalted butter 200g/7oz icing sugar 50ml/2fl oz strong espresso coffee 12 walnut halves, to decorate Preparation method Preheat the oven to 180C/350F/Gas 4. In a bowl, beat the butter and sugar together until very light and pale. Add the eggs one at a time to the butter and sugar mixture, beating well to completely incorporate each egg before adding the next egg. Add the espresso to the mixture and stir well. Then add the flour and walnuts and stir well to completely combine. Spoon the cake mixture into two lined and greased 20cm/8in cake tins. Transfer to the oven to bake 25-30 minutes, or until a skewer inserted into the centre of the cake comes out clean and the cake is golden-brown. Remove the cakes from the oven and leave to cool on a wire rack. For the butter cream topping, beat the butter and icing sugar together in a small bowl until pale and light. Add the espresso and mix well. Spread the butter cream over the top of each cake, then place one cake on top of the other. Decorate the top of the cake with the walnut halves and serve in generous slices.

or the past two years local archer and longbow-maker Martin Young has been holding his Longbow Legacy archery sessions in Druitt Hall on Saturdays. With the 60 year-old Hall soon to be refurbished or replaced, Longbow Legacy is now facing homelessness and Martin is seeking a new archery venue. Update on Druitt Hall
F
ollowing the 18 month long campaign to retain a Community Hall in Christchurch Town Centre, a new community group, Druitt Hall Association Ltd. (DHAL), is negotiating with the Council with the aim of implementing the recent charitable offer of up to £1.5 million to build a new hall and up to £40,000 to refurbish the old hall and keep it running until the new hall is built. Having talked to residents and user groups, DHAL and the professional advisors of the Benefactor, Dr. Somerville Ford, have produced plans, which they believe will meet the needs of the community and also satisfy the Council. On 15th April DHAL submitted an outline Planning Application for a future hall built largely on the current (brown-field) site, with level access and proximity to bus stops but set back slightly from the High Street to open up the view of the gardens. DHAL is keen to preserve the environment and wildlife of the Druitt Gardens and present a design sympathetic to this Conservation Area. Public Consultation began with a big turn-out at Druitt Hall to see plans and hear the Architect and Town Planner describe the project, which was very positively received. DHAL urge the Council to stick to their agreed timetable of Committee meetings and to approve the Planning Application and Business Case. The current hall will take bookings at least through June and hopefully beyond. Christchurch & District Band
I
t is just a number of weeks since Christchurch had its own community concert band formed. Aptly named the Christchurch and District Band, it’s doors are open to anyone who plays a brass or woodwind instrument. There are so many “lapsed” musicians out there who used to play an instrument and simply gave it up because of life events, their children may now be grown up etc. and find now they have more time on their hands and would like to take up playing once again. The ability range in the band is huge from beginners to absolutely superb performers. All work well together.
The band recently had the privilege of leading the Bournemouth St. George’s Day Parade and have received wonderful reviews. They have many more concerts booked plus a visit to one of Christchurch’s twin Towns in Aalen, Germany to perform at their beer festival. The band has a wonderful friendly atmosphere, why not pop along to try us out with a view to joining. You’ll be made most welcome. he award-winning Highcliffe Charity Players’ next show is Here we go again!, performed at our home base, St Mark’s Church Hall in Highcliffe, over four nights from Wednesday 24th to Saturday 27th July. The Players’ forays into revue are legendary – tuneful, exuberant and a little bit risqué! This fast moving, laughter packed evening is presented cabaret style with an interval supper and programme included in the ticket price of £15. There is one further performance (without supper) at the Regent Centre, Christchurch, on Sunday 28th July (£13).
