This is what our readers think of our businesses here, in Christchurch! I’d like to nominate The Industry Hair Salon as an example of a good Christchurch business. One thing’s for certain in Christchurch; there is no shortage of hair salons. The industry is tucked away in Wick Lane, (opposite the old post office), so not as high profile as the High Street Salons. My mother and I have used The Industry since their Christchurch branch opened many years ago. This salon ticks all the usual boxes – Welcoming and friendly service; quality cutting, etc. What makes this place special for me is that Michelle and her team treat me like a person, not just a head of hair to make a profit on. They always give good sound advice are very patient when I don’t quite know what I want! They also provided excellent “disaster recovery” for a friend of mine recently when her salon messed-up. A trip to the hairdressers isn’t cheap these days so it pleases me when the coffee & cake they’ve served me isn’t added to the bill like some other salons.
The Copper Skillet and Siena's Italian Delicatessen are always welcoming; always make a point of having a chat like old lost friends, and as my partner is Gluten intolerant, will always go out of their way to provide a suitable wheat free dish! Although we are very impressed with all the Christchurch venues, the Copper Skillet and Siena's Italian Delicatessen needed a special mention.

Is Christchurch’s Business Your Business? By Julie Ratcliffe Christchurch has been trading for centuries and has many and varied shops and businesses and whilst the doom-mongers tell us that the town is dying, I beg to differ. This new column will take a look at business in Christchurch and although the economic climate is difficult, the outlook here seems better than in many towns. Small businesses are at the heart of the UK economy. Small businesses employ 12 million people – 58% of the private sector workforce. Small businesses are the innovators and the entrepreneurs ploughing savings, time and energy into setting up new ventures. So when we see a new shop or business open we should applaud and support it. In the past few weeks several new businesses have opened. The former Christopher Mark premises now offer a bridal shop, florist consultations, beauty treatment rooms and a second branch for Tony Hair of Highcliffe. There’s a new haberdashery in Bargates and on the High Street we have a new sweets shop – a real trip down memory lane! The former Superbuys shop has been let and Saxon Square will soon have a new Caffé Nero. Business issues in the town are fought for by groups like the Christchurch Chamber of Trade and Commerce and the Federation of Small Businesses, the council has a business portfolio holder and supports the festivals in town. Yes there are big issues, such as parking charges, but this is a great town to be part of and probably the reason why people want to set up shop here. So let’s get behind the town and shop locally to keep the town vibrant; and the shops and businesses should try to lift their game by getting involved and raising their profile. Making a splash! The new splashpark on the Quomps at Christchurch Quay has been officially opened by the Mayor of Christchurch, Cllr Nick Geary – with the help of scores of children. The splashpark has taken the place of the old paddling pool and now offers a more modern and varied facility for children which will be open all year round. On opening the splashpark, the Mayor said: “Today we finally see the results of this community-based project that is built for the 21st Century. It provides an innovative, interactive, educational and exciting water-based play area for the local community and visitors to Christchurch which we hope generations of children can enjoy.” The facility has come about through partnership working between Christchurch Council and members of the local community, including local children who helped to choose the various elements of the park. It was funded from £100,000 from Christchurch Council and £5,000 from Christchurch Community
Partnership with the bulk of the remaining £129,000 coming from the government’s Play Builder project. Chris Chope, MP for Christchurch, said: “This project demonstrates a forward-looking, imaginative council. The old facility was out-of-date and the council could just have closed it and forgotten about it. Instead the place has been transformed into something which is sure to be a popular part of Christchurch.” Adrian Dwyer, representing the local community, added: “This has been a marvellous example of how the community can work with the local council to achieve fantastic results. It’s good that it has been designed to be accessible to everyone regardless of their ability.” Before the Mayor took the plunge and cut the ribbon to mark the opening, a new flag for the splashpark was raised by its designer, Heather Bradfield from Somerford Primary School, and the Council’s portfolio holder for children and young people, Cllr Josephine Spencer.

Getting Married at The Priory Holy Trinity, Christchurch (‘The Priory’) has been hosting weddings since Mediaeval times. Before the English Reformation it served two congregations: (a) Augustinian ‘canons regular’ who met in the Great Quire with its renowned thirteenth century misericords; and (b) the parish church, led by the canons, where worshippers gathered in the Nave, still the longest of any parish church in England. Wedding proposals for the Chamber Couples in Christchurch could soon be saying ‘I do’ at a new venue in Christchurch if proposals by Dorset Registration Service go ahead. Although there are a few venues already licensed to hold weddings and civil ceremonies in the Borough, there is no Registry Office in Christchurch for people who may want a more simple ceremony. Research has shown that between May and October 2009 42 marriages or civil partnership ceremonies of Christchurch couples were held in Registry Offices outside the Borough. By licensing the Chamber at the Civic Offices, these ceremonies could be held in the Borough with the attendant economic benefits to local businesses for receptions and other wedding services. Even if the Resources Committee decides to support the proposal, Dorset Registration
Service will still have to apply to Dorset County Council for a licence to use the Chamber for these ceremonies. The Registration Service, which currently uses the Civic Offices as a venue for licensing births, marriages and deaths, has suggested that the Chamber would be ideal for weddings and civil ceremonies. As the Civic Offices are used during the normal working week, ceremonies would be restricted to a certain number of Saturdays per year, initially proposed as every other Saturday or 26 during the year. Cllr Mike Duckworth, chairman of the Resources Committee, said: “This seems like a very good opportunity that would benefit everyone – this Council would make some extra income, local people would be able to have a Registry Office in their home town and local companies would have more business.

A Day in the Life of... an Educator with Life Education Wessex
