editor’s letter
Last year, many of you helped us back the Christchurch Chamber of Trade’s campaign for a “£1 for 2 hours” parking regime. We are pleased to say that our efforts finally came to fruition and this comes into force from the 1st April. It will apply in the four central Christchurch car parks - Waitrose, Bank, Regent Centre and Saxon Square. Christchurch Council have however, referred to it now as a trial so do please continue to help the businesses in town and make full use of the scheme whilst in place so that we can prove to the Council that this will be worth continuing for the prosperity of our town. Thank you to all those that signed the petition, as you can see, they really can make a difference. For this month’s recipe we have some scrummy Easter Biscuits for you to try. My daughter and I have tried and tested them and although they didn’t look quite as nice as the ones in the photograph, they certainly tasted delicious! Enjoy the Easter Bank holiday!

Remembering Ann James
T
wynham School in Christchurch will be welcoming the public on Wednesday 9 April for a coffee morning to raise funds for Pancreatic Cancer UK (charity no. 112708). There will be delicious homemade cakes, tombola, bookstall, local crafts and a raffle. Local businesses have generously donated some fantastic prizes including a spa treatment at Christchurch Harbour Hotel, a Ringwood Brewery Tour for 4 people, £70 of Go Ape vouchers, a Clay Studio voucher and much more. Any type of cancer is a horrible disease but, thankfully, funding and campaigning has seen the survival rates for many types of the disease improve tremendously in the last few decades. However pancreatic cancer, the UK’s fifth biggest killer among cancers, has been little known, poorly understood and chronically underfunded, which goes some way to explaining why survival rates have not improved in 40 years. A recent advertising campaign highlighting this distressing disease attracted a lot of media attention and has raised awareness considerably. The coffee morning is being held in memory of Ann James, a popular local lady, who gave many years’ service at Twynham School as a member of support staff. Ann was diagnosed with the disease in the latter half of 2013 and sadly died a few months later. Her daughter, Sally Lebbern and her friend Liz Cook are organising the event. The doors will open from 10am until 1pm. For further information please contact Liz Cook via lizcook83@ yahoo.co.uk or on 07950 402398 or Brenda Weeks via brendaweeks@btopenworld.com or on 01202 428004.

Business Column £1 for 2 hours Parking The new “£1 for 2 hours” parking regime comes into force from the 1st April. You will recall the Eye magazines (and many readers) helped the Christchurch Chamber of Trade’s campaign to achieve this change.
Peter
It will apply in the four central Christchurch car parks - Waitrose, Bank, Regent Centre and Saxon Square. However Christchurch Council has referred to it as a trial. So please do come to Christchurch and take full advantage of the scheme. And when you come, use those two hours to look at our shops, have a coffee – or even lunch. The Council will monitor the parking numbers and we in the Chamber will monitor the effect it is going to have on trade. If we can show that trade and visitors increase, we can argue the change should be permanent. Whilst we may think it is obvious that lower parking charges help town centres thrive, with deep Councils cut-backs, we are going to need to produce hard evidence to justify it.
Invasion of the Job Snatchers If you are wondering what happened to the BBC3 programme I mentioned previously, I am told the last episode is being finalised and the date for the start of the six-part series is about to be set. The programme follows a dozen unemployed youngsters who came to Christchurch to get work experience. From its title – Invasion of the Job Snatchers - it is clearly going to focus on the antics of the job seekers who took part. However you will be able to see inside a number of local Christchurch businesses and see how BBC3 views the town. Accordingly I reckon it will be well worth watching, even if I suspect some local business owners will be doing so whilst hiding behind their sofas!

Find us on
An English Mum aster hol’s are nearly upon us, and exasperated parents can be heard expelling a collective sigh of, well, exasperation, as they once again attempt to keep the little darlings entertained. Due to a couple of my kids very helpfully getting older, Rachel I am now down to just one child and a dog to keep happy this holiday — and I have a cunning plan! (Yes, so cunning you could pin a tail on it and call it a weasel).
My plan involves treasure, and you may be surprised to learn that there is actual treasure hidden right here in Christchurch! Absolutely anyone can find it. Well, anyone with the ‘Geocaching’ app downloaded to a smart phone (or a GPS device, if you’re serious!). For the uninitiated, ‘Geocaching’ is a global game of hide and seek. Participants navigate to a specific set of GPS coordinates and then attempt to find the geocache (container) hidden at that location. You get to poke around in the undergrowth, making sure no one sees what you’re doing(!), and once found, you surreptitiously record your name on a log in the cache before replacing it without anyone seeing — any treasure items can be taken as long as you replace them with something else. Finds can also be logged on the website to keep track. There are hundreds of caches right here on our doorstep — there maybe one right outside your house, you never know!
Answers on Page 31
E
Back to my cunning plan; I get to dress up like a spy (not compulsory, but any excuse...) and take excited child on a treasure hunt and dog gets a walk at the same time — everybody wins! Oh, and the best bit? It doesn’t cost anything! If ‘app’s’ aren’t really your thing, you could always head up to Highcliffe Castle and join in the annual Easter Egg hunt instead — just as much fun and with chocolate at the end of it! Have a very Happy Easter, An English Mum :) PS. Go to geocaching.com for more info if you’d like to join in!

Downs in Dorset
SUPPORTING FAMILIES IN DORSET WHO HAVE A CHILD WITH DOWNS SYNDROME “Downs In Dorset” has been in operation since May 2010. The group was formed when a lack of support for families with a child who has Down’s Syndrome, and feeling of isolation, prompted Jo Phillpot and Ceri Tyack to join forces and create the first local Downs Syndrome play/support group. To date, the group continues to support families with the assistance of Jo Phillpot (Group Founder) and Joanne Scates (Group Leader), who both have children with Downs syndrome. Everyone is welcome to attend the group. It is a drop in session for parents, children, friends, carers and wider family members and anyone who has had a pre-natal diagnosis that their child has Downs syndrome. If a group environment is not for you, Joanne Scates and Jo Phillpot are more than happy to visit parents/parents-to-be at home. The group meets on the first Friday of every month at the Somerford Children’s Centre, Solent Room, Draper Road, Christchurch, BH23 3AS, from 12:30-14:30 and is mainly aimed at 0-5 year old children who have Downs syndrome. The group provides a relaxed and safe environment for people who wish to come along and share their experiences and knowledge with others who are in a similar situation. If you are the parent of a child diagnosed with Downs syndrome and you wish to get in contact, please phone Joanne Scates on 07595421148 or Jo Phillpot on 07772732842 or alternatively email downsindorset@hotmail.co.uk Picture: The group receiving a cheque from Norman Scates (Canford Lodge Freemasons).

Ingredients 150g butter, softened 125g caster sugar, plus extra for sprinkling Finely grated zest of 1 lemon 2 medium egg yolks 250g plain flour, plus extra for dusting 1/2 tsp mixed spice 40g currants 10g chopped mixed citrus peel Method 1. Preheat the oven to 180°C/fan160°C/gas 4. In a large bowl, beat the butter, sugar and lemon zest until creamy. Beat in the egg yolks until smooth, then beat in the remaining ingredients until it forms a ball. 2. Turn the dough out onto a lightly floured work surface and roll out to about 5mm thickness. Using a 7cm fluted pastry cutter, cut out about 20 biscuits. Re-roll the trimmings as you go. Place on 2 large, non-stick baking trays, spaced a little apart. 3. Bake for 15-18 minutes, until pale golden. Sprinkle with caster sugar, then cool on a wire rack. As a finishing touch, stack a few biscuits and tie with ribbon. They will keep for a week in an airtight container. HighcliffeEYE 17
Garden View
Climbing the walls
I
f your garden is short on space, rammed with plants, or you simply have an unsightly vertical surface to cover, climbing plants can be used to great effect: from clothing frameworks such as pergolas and arches to hiding sheds and even neighbours! Whether it’s as fast growing as a Triffid, a dainty floral twiner, or an evergreen clinger, I’m certain there’s a climber out there for you, it’s just a case of meeting your perfect match. For those of you lucky enough to have a south-facing doorway, why not spoil yourself with the highly scented fragrance of Star Jasmine (Trachelospermum jasminoides). Not only is it evergreen, but it boasts the added benefit of a claret-red leaf colour in autumn. For those with a north-facing entrance, how about a plant combo starting with an early flowering Clematis tolerant of shade, such as ‘Frances Rivis’, followed by the stunning pink flowers of Rosa ‘Zephirine Drouhin’, perfect in shade with the added bonus of being a thornless variety. If it’s a shady spot and a fast growing evergreen you require you really can’t beat Ivy, but I understand many people are not huge fans, so why not put in the extra effort and seek out a great alternative known as Pileostegia viburnoides. It’s a bit of a mouthful but not only is it evergreen, it will provide white flowers in summer and like Ivy is a self clinger, but nowhere near as vigorous. As well as the other common examples, such as Wisteria (only plant this in full sun and if you are prepared to tie it in and prune it twice annually), Honeysuckle and Pyracantha (great for deterring intruders due to its woody thorns), there is a whole range of other shrubs which can be grown against a wall or fence, not forgetting trees of course, such as the beautiful trained fruit trees we often see in Victorian walled gardens. Shrubs planted at around 30cm away from the base of the wall or fence can be manually tied in and make excellent wall cover, often with the added benefit of flowers. Photinia ‘Red Robin’ for example, or Garrya elliptica make unusual evergreen wall coverings, and look great with a second flowering climber twining through. Don’t forget the huge variety of annuals available which you can grow from seed, such as Sweet Peas, Morning Glory, or maybe try climbing French beans as an edible wall covering?
18 HighcliffeEYE
Do ensure that you provide sturdy wires for plants to travel up. The best and most cost-effective way is simply to fix vine eyes (spaced horizontally around 2m apart) to the fence or wall and vertically at 30cm intervals. Then use a taught network of galvanised wires to provide support. Be sure to tie climbers in horizontally and not vertically as most people do … this way they will look great in your garden rather than flopping over the fence and delighting your neighbour … now that really would drive me up the garden wall! Until next time, happy gardening Lee
Jobs for April: • Sow new lawns or repair bare patches • Protect fruit blossom from late frosts • If any of your plants need support this year, put the supports in now so the plants grow up through them. • Check any tree ties to make sure the tie is not cutting into the trunk. Loosen any that are tight to allow room to expand • Once the soil has warmed up, weed borders and apply a moisture-retaining mulch such as compost or bark

’m Faith, a loveable Greyhound girlie of 3 ½ years old. I’m a petite 25 ½ inches to the shoulder. I really enjoy exciting walks. I walk well on the lead and love to greet both adults and children. I could live with older children and would quite like another dog for company, although I could do with some introductions to smaller dogs as I’m used to being with dogs my own size. I’m hoping you can give me a loving home to call my own.

In excess of £700 was raised for the Smile4Wessex and Life Education Wessex charities and plans are already in hand for next year’s event. Our next major fundraising event will be our Charity Golf Day on Tuesday 20th May 2014 at the Highcliffe Castle Golf Club when proceeds will go to the Smile4Wessex in support of the Children’s neurological centre at Southampton General Hospital. hink of Christchurch and you think of the Priory standing proud for over 900 years. The Priory is larger than 21 Anglican Cathedrals in England; it attracts over 100,000 visitors each year. The Priory is undertaking radical changes not seen for nearly 300 years. Plans for a new visitor centre, upgraded visitor facilities, refurbishment of Priory House are taking place. The Priory’s new vicarage was open to the public on Shrove Tuesday 4th March and attracted many visitors. Father Chris Mann and his wife, Heather, will be moving into their new home in early April. Mothering Sunday on 30th March is always a special time for families. The children go to the Altar and collect a bunch of daffodils to give to their Mothers as a way of saying “Thank You” for the love and care given to them. The Bishop of Winchester Tim Dakin will be leading the service at 9:30 a.m. and everyone is welcome to this and any of our regular services. A new venture, a Music and Arts festival is being held from 15th - 21st June. The walls of the Priory will display art from our local schools. There is a variety of music on offer from some of the country’s best performers. The final performance will be Mendelssohn’s Elijah with the Bournemouth Bach Choir together with Highcliffe Junior Choir. Tickets are available for all events at the Regent centre.
