welcome

to the Highcliffe Eye Community Magazine

editor’s letter

Well Christmas is almost upon us and we hope you enjoy this festive edition of Highcliffe Eye. Excitement is all around us in the office here not only as we are looking forward Cheryl to Christmas but there are many changes afoot for the New Year with a whole new look for our magazines! We welcome new columnists and articles too. Many of you are kind enough to tell us that you already enjoy the magazines but we wanted to be able to give you more enjoyment from reading them and hope you like our new ideas. On a sadder note, Rachel Clark, who has been writing our English Mum column for the last couple of years, is off to pastures new so we would like to wish her all the best for her future endeavours and we just wanted to say that we’ve always enjoyed reading her column and they have always given us a good giggle here in the office, you will be missed Rachel! I’d like to wish you all a very Merry Christmas and can’t wait for you all to see our even bigger and brighter magazines next year! Merry Christmas! Cheryl Cheryl Dennett Editor & Publisher

Congratulations to G. Bolder & Mrs P Wadie for winning our October competitions!

The Christchurch Priory Christmas Dinner Menu The monastic refectory of Christchurch Priory was almost certainly located in the south range of the cloisters. This was aligned with the southern edge of what is today the Priory House Car Park, directly beyond the entrance gate from Priory Car Park. The canons ate at long tables, whilst the Prior and any high status visitors - such as King John, who came to Christchurch a number of times - sat at a table elevated on a platform at one end of the hall. A list of the meals to be served in the Priory refectory on each of the many holy-days throughout the year was recorded in the Order of the Refectory, a copy of which has been preserved in the 14th century Christchurch Priory Cartulary. The dinner ‘menu’ served on Christmas Day was:Seasonal Starter : ‘...wastel bread and wine, a loaf to each for the whole day’s allowance...’ Wastel bread was a good quality white bread produced from wheat flour that had been sifted, or ‘bolted’, through a textile sieve to remove the bran. Having a lighter and more even texture than the usual wholemeal bread, it was served on only the most important holy-days, such as Christmas, Easter, and the Priory’s own feast day of Holy Trinity. The Order of the Refectory stated that the wastel loaf each canon was to receive would weigh the same as their usual daily loaf, which was 60 shilling-weights - this is equal to three 1 lb loaves! The Priory was provided with flour by its own watermill, which is now Place Mill by the Quay. Festive Tipple : ‘Item, each will receive a pottle of wine; moreover a tankard, or full jug of ale called a customary jug, will be placed at the dish, and on every table two smaller flagons will be put, and one flagon on the alternate tables.’

Wine was served only on special days. A pottle held half a gallon - the canons each drank over two litres of wine on Christmas Day! A tankard of ale held ‘two gallons at least’. The usual daily allowance of ale for each canon was a small jug, which held ‘a good gallon’. This hop-less ale was most likely brewed within the Priory; a brewhouse was listed as one of the buildings to be retained when the Priory was dissolved in 1539. It has been estimated that medieval monks derived more than a quarter of their daily energy needs from ale and wine! Christmas Main Course : ‘Item, from the kitchen, five dishes and a pittance will be given at dinner, viz the flesh of salt beef, fresh pork, chicken or wildfowl, charlet, brawn, and fries for a pittance.’ Charlet was essentially scrambled eggs made with herbs or spices, often with chopped pork added. A pittance was a small extra portion given as a holy-day special. Perhaps these pan-fried treats were a medieval equivalent of vegetable crisps, but they were certainly not made with potatoes, which would not be seen in Europe for another 250 years! Specials : ‘If Christmas Day falls on a Friday or Saturday, fish is given and not meat, and then for a pittance, a rissole of figs is given, or fresh fish...’ The rissoles were chopped figs, perhaps with raisins or other fruit added and soaked in wine, mixed with spices such as cinnamon, nutmeg, or ginger, all rolled into a ball and fried in oil. These medieval mince pies without pastry would be a delicious Christmas treat even today!

Christchurch Priory Cloisters Café Bar Opened earlier this year in Priory House, close to the former site of the medieval refectory, the Cloisters Café Bar is open daily Monday to Friday 10.00am-4.00pm serving a range of beverages, lite-bites and a daily lunch-time special. Catering can also be provided for private functions. Access is through the church or via the Priory House Car Park. The Café is adjacent to the relocated Priory Gift Shop, which offers a wide selection of gifts, cards, books, jewellery, pickles and preserves, church music CDs, and souvenirs to suit all ages and budgets. A perfect shop to visit for Christmas present ideas! The correct answer to the Local History Competition in the October issue was that Christchurch Priory was closed down in: b) 1539 After Christchurch Priory was dissolved by King Henry VIII, Prior John Draper retired to Somerford Grange with an annual pension of over £133.

Now I’m not having a go at people for shopping on the internet, I do quite a bit myself, what I’m trying to say is be careful what you wish for. Internet shopping is growing at an exponential rate, however, it is still in its infancy and what it looks like now is not what it will be in the future. How long will shopkeepers sit and watch people use them as a catalogue page for online sellers? The traders in Highcliffe are waking up to the fact that the internet is not going away and as a group are looking how we can adapt and use things such as social media to boost our High Street.

We also need to build on things that the internet cannot offer, you can’t taste online, you can’t smell online and the conversation just isn’t the same.

Christchurch Chamber of Trade December is the most challenging of months for Christchurch businesses. For the shop keeper, sales leading up to Christmas are the most important of the year. A significant percent of the year’s sales are made in Peter December, and your local shop owner is dependent on that happening. Did I buy the right stock all those months ago? Will it sell well, or must it be heavily discounted in the sales? And Christmas is hardly over before the shops have to gear up for that important after Christmas sale. December is certainly the most frantic, worrying and important month of the year for the retailer. For the Restaurateur, Christmas party bookings will have them rushed off their feet, staffing cover will be a worry and far from closing the door on Christmas day itself, many will be working to provide a large lunch on that day too. Contrast the local Estate Agent. Few put their house on the market in December and fewer are looking to buy. December is a dead month for them. All they can hope for is that the market will pick-up early next year. For the offices and engineers, the challenge is twofold. Getting that final job completed “by Christmas” is an often-made client demand. Meanwhile, the Christmas to New Year close down, plus those last days of holiday taken by the staff, coupled with the expected Christmas bonus and Christmas party all make December a cashflow disaster. For the Rest Homes and carers, Christmas is unlikely to bring any extra holiday – staff rotas will be stretched and they are still expected to add that extra seasonal cheer. Whichever category your December may fall into, remember Christmas comes but once a year, so, may I still wish you a Happy Christmas and, once you have recovered, a Prosperous New Year.

TOP 10 REASONS TO SHOP LOCALLY THIS CHRISTMAS When you shop locally you will enjoy good service, product knowledge, high quality - and know that you've really done something about keeping your local shops and services in business and your local communities thriving. Here we tell you the Top Ten Reasons why it is good for everybody! 1. Local shops sell a wide range of great products at affordable prices. Many people get out of the habit of shopping locally and are then surprised by the range of products and gifts available. 2. Shopping locally saves you money. Out of town shops have done a good job of convincing us all that sole traders = expensive, but the evidence just isn't there to back this up. If you add in travel, parking costs, fees to transport larger items home and customer time, the overall cost is often much greater. 3. Shopping locally retains our communities. People don't like losing shops and services in small towns and villages but don't equate this to how they spend their money. Shops will only survive if customers spend locally - so if you want a vibrant town centre, where people can socialise as well as shop, we need to encourage people to shop locally. 4. Shopping locally retains our distinctiveness avoid clone towns! Many town centres in Britain look the same with franchises and multinationals. Independent shops create distinctive shopping experiences and stock different products. Independent shops keep traditional local products alive. They respond more quickly to the needs of local customers, stocking products to meet the changing population needs. 5. Shopping locally saves the environment. We are all aware of CO2 emissions and our environmental impact. Local shops often stock a higher percentage of locally sourced goods for which distribution time and customer journey times are reduced. This helps reduce our global footprint.

18 HighcliffeEYE

6. Shopping locally creates jobs. Shops in our town centres and villages create local employment and self employment. These people in turn spend in the local economy. Evidence shows that for every £10 spent in an independent shop, £25 is generated for the local economy compared to £14 spent in multinationals. 7. Local independent shops invest more in our communities. Sole traders and independent stores are proportionally more generous in their support for local charities, carnivals, schools and community events. So supporting local shops means a financial return for our community. 8. Local shops are for everyone. Most people can get to their local shops easily. This is especially important for the elderly, the vulnerable, young people and those without private transport. Keeping your shops open by buying locally helps the whole community. 9. Local shops value you more. Evidence from numerous surveys shows people receive better customer care and service in local shops. Traders survive by their reputation and repeat business - so shopping locally means that you get a higher standard of service. 10. Shopping locally saves services. Private, voluntary and public sector services cluster around shops. The loss of the high street often corresponds to a reduction in these services. As shops disappear, so do hairdressers, vets, dentists etc

SUPPORT YOUR LOCAL COMMUNITY!

MAINTAINING YOUR CARPETS UPHOLSTERY AND FURNISHINGS After buying your house and car the next largest investment you will make is for the carpets and furniture. Regular cleaning will prolong their life and retain the pleasing appearance. In the same way that you would have your car serviced at least once a year then you should consider the same concept when it comes to maintaining those expensive soft furnishings.

How do you go about it? 1. DO IT YOURSELF Produces limited results, can be risky as it is easy to get carried away and over-wet causing shrinkage or discolouration.. Any detergent residues left behind can cause the items to get dirtier much quicker. 2. LEAVE THEM Soil build up can be unsightly and cause long term damage to carpet fibres and fabrics. 3. EMPLOY A PROFESSIONAL CLEANING COMPANY Be wary of half price offers that are pushed through the letterbox, many of these are the hallmark of the ‘bait and switch’ operation. They offer a low price but once in the home the price rises significantly through all the ‘added’ extras. Often they may have no insurance cover in the event that things go wrong. Companies who have been recommended by friends or relatives may be one way of choosing a genuine professional cleaning company. Also look for company who belongs to a recognised specialist trade body such as the National Carpet Cleaners Association (NCCA). Members are required to attend regular training courses and prove they have FULL insurance cover as part of their membership criteria. Your local NCCA members who will be happy to attend to all your needs and provide a free quotation are Peter and Zita at New Forest Carpet Clean.

Well, it’s that time of year! The most wonderful time of year some might say. The Christmas spirit is swirling around in the Laura air and I am looking forward to all the Christmas things coming up at school such as the Christmas assemblies and the annual Twynham School Priory Carol concert. One of the things that I am most passionate about at this time of year is Operation Christmas Child which is a charity set up to help children in the poorer countries receive a Christmas present. The work they do is amazing, however, they rely on donations. To find out more of how you too can help or donate go to www.samaritans-purse.org.uk.

Mudeford Men’s Club HAVE A BIG HEART The club give away thousands of pounds to charities every year. They work tirelessly for the good of local clubs and organisations. Members were there to witness the presentation of a cheque for over £7,000 handed personally to Neal Williams of Macmillan Caring Locally, from Christchurch Hospital. The fundraising for 2014, not including December, so far has been for the RNLI, Help for Heroes, Remap, Zoe’s Wish, Christchurch Life Saving Club, Scarf and of course Macmillan Caring Locally. Mudeford Men’s Club have a long history. It began in 1927 and was started by the local fishermen hiring a room in the Stanpit village hall. Later, the members built their own club which now stands opposite the same hall. A Mrs Wiggins who had helped in creating the club, back in 1927 was invited to attend to the opening night.

She was quoted as saying ‘My only regret is that I am not one of you, because I should like to be a member.’ Today ladies are full members and take an active role in the day to day running of the club. Liz Westall is the First Lady on the Committee, one of the entertainment crew, also secretary for the same village hall, so keeping that historical connection. Some members of the club are glad to help before and at events. On the day of an event, many of them come early to help set up the various stalls. BBQ’s usually goes well even though this summer lent itself more to ice creams that was equally enjoyed. The club appreciates the hard work of the members and demonstrated this by holding a ‘thank you’ evening, putting on entertainment with a buffet. So a caring club all round. They have annual events like, Children’s Christmas party, pantomime trip, New Years Eve party, Dinner and Dance night, Ladies Night and many more. If you would like to join Mudeford Men’s Club they have a website or telephone the club on 01202 482928 or for secretary 01202 477689.

Garden View Christmas Wreaths

Lee

Long before the introduction of central heating and other luxuries of the 21st century, people required greater faith that they would safely survive the harsh upcoming winter. One such symbolic display of this hope was the beautiful Christmas wreath. Now creeping back in fashion and available in a number of guises, they can be found hanging on doorways, both inside and out, as a centrepiece on a table, and even hung on walls as decorations. Although we may have lost the traditional reasoning behind displaying such garlands, I’m on a mission to bring them back … in whatever style suits your home. The word ‘wreath’ is linked to the word ‘wrist’, both words describing the form of a continuous circular shape. Fuse this with ‘wrethe’ from middle English (meaning a twisted band or ring of leaves) and you have the wreath as we know it today. The circular shape is symbolic of eternity, or everlasting life because it has no beginning or end. In ancient Rome the symbol became a popular display of victory. From a Christian perspective it represents the unending circle of life, with the traditional Holly as the thorns on Jesus’ crown and the red berries as his blood. At this bleak time of year, it’s wonderful to use evergreens and other brightly coloured flowers, foliage, or fruits to adorn your wreath. The addition of expensive and rare fruits such as pomegranates, indicated wealth, but wreaths also included the display of pinecones, seashells and even imported products. Once the decorations had been taken down, the edible decorations would be eaten and the bounty of summer enjoyed in the depth of winter. The Americans seem to be leading the way in the contemporary wreath, so why not try something a little different this year such as a circle of pine cones, dried leaves, dried sweetcorn cobs, pussy willow or even a ring of astroturf! Merry Christmas

By Lee Bestall 30 HighcliffeEYE

Making your own Wreath Making your own wreath is fun and easy, and can vary from a simple and cheap evergreen circle to an elaborate bauble ring. For those who like a quick and easy option, simply buy a circle of oasis and soak it in tepid water, before sticking in sprigs of evergreen foliage from the garden, flowers, berries, dried fruits, nuts, and bows. If you have more time why not make your own base by taking a ring of string wire and covering it in moss or hay, holding it in place using thinner gauge wire, then wiring in the foliage and decorations. Be aware though that holly wreaths are tricky and gloves should be worn!

An English Mum

I know that for a lot of people, Christmas is about finding the perfect gift, sending the perfect card and seeing the reaction on friends’ faces as they receive the unexpected, the unusual or even the unwanted! Rachel It’s the fun of bumping into friends while shopping in the unique, friendly shops of Christchurch, and hiding their intended gift as they ask the inevitable ‘Are you ready for Christmas?’ For some, it’s about candles and choirs, with scarf wrapped children singing about shepherds and angels and a faraway night when something very, very special happened. It’s about trying to explain what a virgin is, without giving too much away… There is just one thing I miss at Christmas — a very special member of my family. My amazing sister, Bex, lives near a slum in Uganda. In the last 8 years, together with her Ugandan husband Moses, she has built a whole Primary school just for the slum kids, from nothing! Thanks to their vision and the donations of a lot of very generous people, over 350 children now have a future. These are children who live in the most appalling conditions, and yet they are happy, smiley kids, who love being educated and love that they have been given a hope. This is, sadly, my last column as I take a break, but if you would like to help make a change this Christmas, please go to childofhopeuganda.org, where you can make a donation or find out about sponsoring a child. If money is tight, then just take the pictures of the happy, smiling kids at the school and be cheered by their youth, enthusiasm and zest for life! I would like to wish you all a very Merry Christmas and a blessed New Year. An English Mum x
