editor’s letter

The last weekend of this month sees one of Christchurch’s largest events of the year, and I think it’s probably my favourite event locally too - The Christchurch Cheryl Christmas Festival. So, pop a note in your diary to reserve Saturday 29th November for the whole day as the festivities begin from 10am with a Christmas market in the High Street selling a variety of food, drink and Christmas gifts, then go on to enjoy a whole programme of events through to 7pm that evening, more details and times can be found on page 11. Don’t forget to pop into the local shops too whilst you’re there, they can sometimes be forgotten about on market days and they are so important to the local economy, so please don’t forget them! In fact, why not make it your mission to pop into a shop that you’ve not been in before or for a very long time just to see what’s in there? You never know, you may be pleasantly surprised and find something fabulous for that special someone or maybe even spoil yourself. Or why not try somewhere else to eat or drink? Step outside of your ‘norm’ and try something new – try it, you might like it! Cheryl Cheryl Dennett Editor & Publisher

An English Mum

O

nce bonfire night is over, I consider 100 it is officially safe to mention the ‘C’ word 95 without any shouts 75 of ‘Too early!’ Yes, Rachel Christmas is just around the corner, and the end of this month brings 25 my personal favourite of all the Christchurch festivals - the big Christmas Light Switch-on! 5 For my family, it starts with the excitement of 0 running to the end of our road (with seconds to spare) in order to follow the Father Christmas procession as he is pulled along in his sleigh by his gorgeous (if ever so slightly stinky), real, live reindeer! Excited children trot along behind the sleigh as he slowly makes his way through Bargates into the town centre, ready to attempt to switch the lights on outside the Mayor’s Parlour. I say ‘attempt’ as it has not always been straightforward, with occasional years of wind, rain and technical problems to throw a spanner in the works! The atmosphere in the town is a lovely, family experience, with smaller kids sitting on parents’ shoulders and older kids hanging off lampposts in order to catch a glimpse of the infamous Mr Christmas! After the suspense of the countdown to the big switch-on, the festivities continue with 1 0stalls 0 of food and gifts, shops open late and a steady 5 procession of kids down to the Priory9where they can queue up to meet Father Christmas 5 and feed the reindeer. (They really do7smell bad, but are incredibly cute!). After enjoying the festivities, I personally 2 5 like to finish the evening with a bag of hot chestnuts to munch on the way home. It really is5 the perfect start to the Christmas season — wrap up warm, and I hope to see you there!0 An English Mum x HighcliffeEYE 15

ou know what they should do!

I couldn’t begin to count the times I’ve heard a sentence start with those words. “They should fix the pavements”; “They should sweep the streets”; “They should open a

Richard

shoe shop”; “They should put events on in Highcliffe”. Who are they? We all find it easy to pass the buck and blame someone else for our ills. How quickly we judge others and gossip about how “They” are doing it wrong. And modern technology has not changed a thing, it’s guaranteed that any blog or news item online will gain a few genuine comments but very quickly turn into a hotbed of personal abuse usually directed at those with varying degrees of power. Well here’s a thought, if you don’t like it, do something about it - If you see a broken pavement don’t just gossip about it, report it; If you want a shoe shop you try and open one, you will soon find out why no one has; If you want events in Highcliffe, organise them, get together with other interested parties and just do it! It’s worked in Milford on Sea. Oh yes, you just don’t have the time do you there’s just too much on the telly? Please don’t take this personally I’m not talking about you, “They” know who I’m talking about. Remember the old saying: See a penny pick it up all day long you’ll have good luck. See some litter pick it up in the end you’ll have clean streets. Regards

Garden View Hedging your Bets!

Lee

Ok, so it’s a terrible heading, but November is the perfect time for planting new hedges, and at this time of year it’s a very safe bet. Prior to the use of containerised plants (which can be planted at almost any time of the year) planting between November and March was a gardeners only option, and as far as the plants are concerned it’s still the best by far. When plants are dormant (asleep) they will hardly even notice being moved, and by spring when their new leaves emerge their roots will have already pushed through the surrounding soil in their new home. Hedges are often thought of as hard work, time consuming and have been at the centre of heated neighbourly debates (whether it’s cutting them too low or letting them grow too high). They are great for blocking out unsightly views, adding privacy, and also make a wonderful place for wildlife to live, rest and nest. For the past 3 years we’ve had a variety of birds nesting in our Yew hedge and the addition of extra life in the garden always pleases me. If you’re looking for a quick solution to a green screen, then you have two options, either instant (such as a 2m high instant hedge, pre grown, trained and clipped, perfect for the impatient gardener), or Leylandii conifers. As I write this I can hear the screams, but it really is the best option for speed and it’s cost-effective. Do be aware that legally, as of a couple of years ago, you have to keep its growth contained to 2m high if on a boundary (this does not apply to any other species). For the more patient gardener, try the classic evergreen Yew hedging. Like most beautiful things in life, it’s more expensive to buy. It’s also slower growing (15-30cm per year), but does only require cutting once per year in September, and will provide you with the most beautiful hedge. I also favour the evergreen Portuguese laurel, which has a smaller leaf than the more common cherry laurel, or Beech if it doesn’t need to be evergreen. For a smaller hedge it has to be Box, but alternatives include Lavender, Berberis, Lonicera, and for the perfect no-cut low hedge go for a small Hebe, (simply choose a variety which only grows to the height you actually want the hedge to grow to). Happy Winter Gardening

By Lee Bestall 18 HighcliffeEYE

How to prepare for your Hedge Whichever hedge you choose, the ground preparation should be the same. For containerised, bare-root or root-balled hedges, dig out a trench which follows the line of the proposed hedge, this should be at least one and a half times wider and deeper than the rootball. Fork over the base of the trench and return some of the soil, so that when you plant the hedge it sits at the same level as previously planted (i.e. not too deep). Backfill with the removed soil, add a handful of bonemeal per plant, and dig in. Firm with your boot then water well before mulching with 5cm of compost, manure or bark clippings.

1000km Ride between our twin towns!

A

Christchurch man has recently returned from a 650 mile cycling adventure between two of our twin towns.

Steve Haynes, a trustee of Christchurch Citizens Advice Bureau rode a singlespeed, fold up bike from Stuttgart in Germany to Budapest in Hungary, dropping by to see our friends in Aalen and Tatabanya along the way. Most of the journey was alongside the beautiful River Danube - just as well as with no gears to call upon and a small bike stacked up with camping gear, hills were a particularly tough proposition!

Steve

In Aalen, Germany, he met up with the mayor and Hannah from the local twinning group and had a tour of the lovely medieval town centre whilst under the watchful eye of the “Aalen spy”. Looking down from the church tower, this mechanised head reflects the story from the middle ages when a spy was dispatched to head off an impending war. When he was discovered, he humorously admitted he was “a spy from Aalen”, and for his naïve honesty the town was spared! Aalen also has some interesting Roman remains as it was on the key defensive lines at the northern edge of the empire. It also has an historic mining complex. After leaving Aalen, Steve rode through one of the largest meteor craters on earth and stopped at Nordlingen, where the buildings are made of stone containing millions of microscopic diamonds. The huge pressure of the impact, 4.5 million years ago, fused the granite causing the minute gems to form. Flowing 3000 miles across Europe, the Danube is the continent’s longest river and Steve spent the next 8 days riding alongside through amazing scenery, across Germany and Austria to Vienna, then to Bratislava and on through Slovakia to the Hungarian border. Eurovelo 6 (a cross Europe cycle route) also took him up into the Wachau wine growing region, where vineyards stretched along the escarpments as far as the eye could see, and the winding cycle route was dotted with ruined castles, including the one at Durnstein where Richard the Lionheart was imprisoned. A long way east, just 30 miles off the Danube, lies Tatabanya, another of Christchurch’s twin towns. Set in a an area of magnificent hills, the town is overlooked by the largest bronze bird statue in the world, the mighty Turul.

Prato Park, Vienna

In legend, this bird led the founders of Hungary to their land. Steve met up with Susie, a teacher at the local school and her family, and explored the sights whilst enjoying the terrific hospitality they offered - which was most welcome after almost 2 weeks alone in a one man tent! Tatabanya has a great museum showcasing its mining history and is a great base for visiting the lakes of the region.

Cycling alongside the Blue Danube 22 HighcliffeEYE

The final leg of his journey was on to Budapest, the spectacular capital of Hungary. Steve arrived in the early evening when the fantasy architecture was washed with intense yellow lights, its buildings appearing to float magically on the river like great ocean liners. The next day he celebrated the completion of his ride beneath the Statue of Victory, a huge installation by the Soviets after World War 2 that overlooks the city from a surrounding hill. Lifting his small bike above his head he was able to reflect on the trip – he had travelled through 4 countries and over 1000km, pedalling over 1 million strokes, on a little fold up cycle more suited to popping round the shops. Raising funds to help local people! It was a great adventure, which also raised funds to support Christchurch Citizen’s Advice Bureau. This fantastic organisation helps over 1000 people in the local area each year, offering friendly, professional advice when it is most needed. Each bureau is an independent charity and Christchurch relies on grants from the Borough Council and others, plus charitable fundraising efforts. Through the ride, Steve has so far raised around £1000 - if you would like to help him support the bureau you can visit www.justgiving.com/ danubechallenge. Steve would like to specifically thank the following local companies for their support of his fundraising:

After 1025km in Budapest

Motorbiking, 143 Barrack Road (01202 479125. Cars to Go, 93 Barrack Road (01202) 389099 Mathews Shoes, 19 & 25 High Street (01202) 482231 Rapid PCs Unit 11 Silver Business Park (01202 478979. CycleXperience, 179 Barrack Road (01202) 486278, South Coast Fire Protection Ltd, 01202 460019 Ways YOU Can Help the CAB! The number of people the CAB can help is directly related to the number of volunteers and staff it has available. Volunteering with the CAB is a great way to learn new skills and knowledge whilst making a difference to your community. You could help as a volunteer advisor, or alternatively the CAB has an opening for an additional Trustee Director. Christchurch CAB is also seeking corporate sponsors to help support projects for 2015 and to ensure that it can continue its work long into the future. If you are interested in any of these opportunities then please contact the Bureau Manager on (01202) 470917 or admin@christchurchcab.org If you would like to find out more about the ride, the history and scenery of the Danube and stories from the road, then Steve’s new book “Single Speed to Budapest” will be out before Christmas. You can contact him at CEO@amilewith.me Steve was also assisted by Christchurch Twinning Association. Local care home celebrates Summer Fayre success

taff and residents at Care South’s Queensmead Residential Home in Christchurch raised almost £2,000 for the Residents’ Amenity Fund during their annual Summer Fayre, which they held recently in the home’s beautiful gardens. There was a whole host of entertainment on offer to keep younger guests amused, including a bouncy castle, balloon artist and children’s play area, plus special visit from Peppa Pig! The home hosted a skittle alley and traditional fayre games, including a raffle, tombola and coconut shy. Visitors also watched brave Home Manager, Janine May, and Deputy Manager, Emma Cotton, taking part in the Ice Bucket Challenge. Residents were joined by their families, friends and the local community, including Director of AFC Bournemouth, Rob Mitchell, along with representatives from organisations including Dorset Police, Dorset Fire and Rescue Service, local branches of the Stroke Association, Age Concern and Dementia Friends.

INGREDIENTS

4 large ripe English pears, peeled and cubed 100g golden granulated sugar 250g blackberries 200g plain flour 100g unsalted butter, cold, cut into small pieces 85g shelled pistachios, roughly chopped 100g demerara sugar ice cream or custard to serve (optional)

www.millerbrosfunerals.co.uk

METHOD

Heat oven to 190C/fan 170C/gas 5. Place the pears in a medium-size pan, add the granulated sugar and cook on a medium heat until the fruit starts to soften and releases its juices, about 10 mins. Add the blackberries and bring back to the boil, then remove from the heat. Spoon the fruity mixture into 4 individual ovenproof ramekins, or 1 large baking dish. Place the flour, butter and a pinch of salt in a large bowl and rub together with your fingers until the mixture resembles coarse breadcrumbs. Add the pistachios and demerara sugar, then stir to combine. Sprinkle crumble evenly over the cooked fruit. This can be done up to 1 day ahead, or frozen for up to 1 month. Bake for 20-25 mins if small, 40 mins if large, until golden. If baking from frozen, add 15 mins cooking time. Remove from the oven, cool slightly, then serve with ice cream or custard, if you like.
