editor’s letter I can’t believe it’s October already! This year really is whizzing by fast it seems. I searched the Internet for interesting dates in October and it seems the US have designated the month to be National Pizza Month! So I thought why not step out of my comfort zone of baking cakes and try cooking a pizza when I stumbled across a great recipe that I thought was worth sharing with you all. Why not turn to page 28 and give it a try yourself? Totally Locally Christchurch are holding another Fiver Fest Fortnight from the 26th October, flick over to page 5 to find out more of how important it is that we try and spend as much as we can within local independent businesses to boost our local economy. Don’t forget to move your clocks backward one hour on Sunday 27th October and a Happy Halloween to you all.
Congratulations to Mrs Mary Whitcher for winning our August competition!

T
It’s Fiver Fest Fortnight time for Christchurch again!
T
he 26th of October sees the second Fiver Fest Fortnight launch for Totally Locally Christchurch (TLC), the shop local campaign run by volunteers from within the local area. The campaign has been initiated to spread the important message of shopping locally and what a big difference just spending a few pounds can actually make. If every adult in Christchurch (all of BH23) tweaked their shopping habits just slightly and spent just £5 of their weekly spend in local independent shops, it would be worth an extra £8.2 million (at least!) per year going into our local economy. This would mean more jobs, better facilities and a nicer place for us all to live. Makes you think doesn’t it? Totally Locally has had a big impact on other towns that have run the campaign. TLC are confident that it can do the same for Christchurch and Highcliffe with Fiver Fest Fortnights being one way to pass on the message of shopping locally and its benefits to everyone. “Totally Locally isn’t anti-supermarket or anti-internet”, said Totally Locally founder, Chris Sands. “There is a place for all these things in our lives. It’s just highlighting how a small change in spending habits can make a huge change to Christchurch and Highcliffe. We have a choice to make the place we live that little bit better by just diverting £5 of our weekly spend back into our local economy. And everyone wants their town to be great, don’t they?!”. Totally Locally Campaign was released as a free kit for towns to download and use in 2012, after demand for it became so huge that the Totally Locally Team had to create a way for anyone to be able to use. Totally Locally is a multi award winning campaign that has a proven record of helping towns to re-assess themselves and work together. Totally Locally is a social enterprise and is based in Sowerby Bridge, West Yorkshire, UK. TLC holds two Fiver Fest Fortnights per year with each one growing bigger and better. Look out for signs in shop windows to see who is taking part this Fiver Fest Fortnight to grab yourself a bargain! Offers are also posted on the website wwwtotallylocallychristchurch.co.uk

’m Neipher, a pretty Whippet cross German Shephard girl. I’m 3 ½ years old and 24 year inches to the shoulder. I’m the perfect houseguest as I’m clean and quiet. I’m happy to be left alone when required, but I could live with another dog. I get on with everyone, including children of all sizes. I’m very obedient as I’ve been to training classes, but my recall still needs a bit of work! I’ve had a tough life so far, but I am finally one very happy dog who loves cuddles and treats. Circle Dance has come to Highcliffe!
D
ancing in a circle is an ancient tradition common to many cultures for marking special occasions, strengthening community and encouraging togetherness. Modern Circle Dance draws on the rich and diverse traditional dances of many cultures and there is also a growing repertoire of new dances to classical music and contemporary songs. Dances can be energetic and lively or gentle and reflective. Anyone of any age or ability can Circle Dance. Each dance is taught and there is no audience. You do not need a partner. The atmosphere is friendly and welcoming with no pressure to get the steps right straight away. It promotes a deep sense of wellbeing and the repetitive steps are like a moving meditation. It is excellent for brain health as well as gently improving your level of physical fitness. Circle Dance needs to be experienced in order to find out what it is. Not many people have heard about it but there are many established groups throughout the country, day and weekend workshops and even Circle Dance holidays. Come and experience it for yourself. You will be surprised how much you enjoy it even if you have never danced before. We meet on alternate Friday mornings 10.30-12.30 at Highcliffe Methodist Church Hall. We are also hoping to start a group at Greystones on a Monday afternoon from October. Beginners are welcome at any time and your first session is always free. Contact Nancy on 01425 277920 or email nancyferguson53@googlemail.com.

local history
Country Houses - The Hoy & Chewton Mill The Hoy This is the oldest house in Highcliffe, probably well over 200 years old. It is now a beautifully preserved residence in Lymington Road, opposite the junction with Castle Avenue. It is a large brick-built house, until recently thatched with barley straw but now roofed with Canadian cedar shingles. The house has been extended on both sides in keeping with the original building. On the side wall is a sealed window. It was bricked up to avoid payment of window tax. Now it has been painted to simulate a window. The house is surrounded by a concrete apron as the roof has no gutters and the rain pours off the roof onto the ground below.
In the garden are two curiously carved stones whose purpose is unknown. They may have been brought over from France by Lord Stuart de Rothesay to build the Castle.
rescued and their baggage brought ashore to The Hoy. It is recorded that the villagers had great difficulty in making the shipwrecked seamen understand that they had hospitable intentions. The Hoy’s licence lapsed in 1868. The other inns of Newtown were the Globe and the Victoria. The Globe remains but the Victoria’s licence lapsed in 1886 and the site is now occupied by the shops Lafitte Galleries, Highcliffe Coaches and Lesleys.
Chewton Mill The present Mill House is about 260 years old and stands at the end of Mill Lane down in Chewton Bunny. It was a water-driven corn mill and stands on the same site as an older mill and it is still possible to see the dip made by the Mill Pond to the north of the present house. The Mill was mentioned in Chancery proceedings in the time of Elizabeth I, following a dispute when it was ruled that the Mill had always been part of the Manor of Somerford. The great mill wheel was removed by one of the owners, Miss Clutterbuck, in the late 1920’s so that the wheel room could be used as a rehearsal room for the Gilbert and Sullivan productions in the village. Principal singers were hired from Bournemouth but many local people took part including Harry Lee, a local butcher, Herbie Hann, the manager of Misselbrook and Westons (later Rosencase and now G & T’s), and Ken Whitcombe, the Parish sexton. After General Stuart Wortley died, Mrs Stuart Wortley lived at the Castle for a time but eventually it was sold and she retired to the Mill House where she died three years later. Half way down the footpath that runs above the Bunny towards the sea is a seat on a knoll dedicated to her memory. The site had been carefully selected because from that point is a superb view through the trees of the distant Isle of Wight.
The Hoy takes its name from the Isle of Wight Hoy, a boat which plied between the mainland and the Isle of Wight. In the 19th century ‘Ye Olde Hoy’ was one of three inns in Newtown. Gamekeepers from the estates gathered there. They brought with them their terrier dogs which fought the badger kept by the landlord. Badger baiting was a popular pastime. The gamekeepers smoked clay pipes which were smoked once then thrown away. The garden is littered with remnants of these broken pipes. A large Russian ship was driven ashore at Chewton Bunny in the late 1830’s. The Russian sailors were

In Christchurch our members are very diverse and it is likely you will know someone, or come across one of us in your daily life. We have Doctors, Dentists, Chemists, Insurance Consultants, Self Employed (various), Retired etc in the club all working under the non-political umbrella of Rotary. As you can see Rotary welcomes members from all walks of life. We have several committees within the club which encompass all, local and international deserving causes. A brief example is a long standing Rotarian named Paul Bond, retired Dentist previously working in Boscombe. With “his teamâ€?, Paul made a considerable impact in a small town in Uganda. But how? By collecting, storing and sorting books no longer wanted in this country and getting them shipped across to where they are wanted and needed. Paul and his team locked themselves away in his garage and sorted out a “few booksâ€?, over 22 Boxes in the last consignment alone, which added to the 19 boxes previously sent. About 4,000 books, enough in fact to open 4 Libraries! Whilst we are all very sceptical of seeing benefits going overseas we all recognise the need that is there. Rotary followed the books on their travels and saw them eagerly awaited and used in the libraries. Â

y the time you read this, Christchurch and a number of its businesses should be on their way to TV stardom! BBC 3 is in the process of filming a six-part series based on a group of unemployed 18 to 28 year olds keen to find work.
Peter
They chose Christchurch as the place to film partly because of our well known age profile, but also on closer investigation they found such a positive business community here. The first day of shooting was on a sunny day at the beginning of September in the lovely surroundings of the Bowls Pavilion of the Kings Arms when the one hundred shortlisted applicants were whittled down to twenty. Each successful applicant is being placed in established Christchurch businesses for 6 to 8 weeks of work experience under the guidance of an older mentor within the company.

There is a wide cross-section of local businesses involved, both large and small and many of which are well known local names. All of us who are participating have slight nerves over how the chosen candidates are going to turn out and the way in which the editing might portray our respective businesses, but I am hopeful the overall image will be of an active town and an energetic business community. After the humorous Top Gear portrayal of the area as a place full of geriatrics, I hope that this, together with the recent National Statistics Research finding that Christchurch is the most affluent sea-side town in the country, will exhibit us in a more realistic light. The BBC3 series is likely to be shown in January next year and has a current working title of “New Blood Old Town. Whilst I doubt it will do for Christchurch what “Broadchurch did for West Bay, every little helps.

O
ctober is a funny old month, marooned in between the heady days of summer and the excitement leading up to Christmas - nothing much happens! I deliberately choose not to celebrate the now ridiculously over-hyped Rachel festival of halloween due to both my religious beliefs and a strict aversion to the colour orange. In lieu of this, I thought I’d research what I could celebrate instead. I quite like the idea of ‘National Pizza Month’, which appears to have been incepted, unsurprisingly, by a Pizza outlet, although ‘National Popcorn Popping Month’ sounds much more fun! If Wikipedia is to be believed it is also ‘National Squirrel Awareness month’. Yes, dear reader, squirrels. I’m pretty certain I’ve been aware of squirrels for quite some time, although for any blissfully unaware citizens I suggest a quick walk around Christchurch Priory would suffice, rather than dedicating a whole month to it. October also hosts ‘Mole Day’ which apparently is something to do with chemistry and nothing to do with small, poorly sighted burrowing mammals. If it were it would make much more sense, as it is also ‘World Sight Day’ during October. ‘Apple Day’ sounds far too healthy, and whilst I got quite excited at the idea of the USA’s ‘National Sausage Month’ my enthusiasm was soon quashed when I discovered this occurs in September in the UK. Bother, missed it. On further investigation, however, I have found something that is worth supporting; October is Breast Cancer Awareness Month. Having recently lost a friend to this evil disease this seems a most appropriate cause to join in with. ‘Pink Fridays’ will be taking place throughout the month where you can dress pink, eat pink, party pink or even work pink all to raise money for this worthwhile charity. Why not check out breastcancercare.org.uk to see what else you can do to raise a few pounds?

Garden View
The late show Good planning and preparation can make this time of year a dramatic moment in the garden, but if you feel your outside space lacks autumn pizzazz, the work for next year’s spectacle begins right now. You still have time to plant late flowering herbaceous perennials and hardy grasses, both of which have beautiful flowers in bloom right now, but aim to do this at the beginning of the month. Experiment with vivid red Helenium such as ‘Rubinzwerg’ which look fantastic when planted in front of the biscuit coloured flower spikes of Calamagrostis ‘Karl Foerster’, or try the much lower, but no less dramatic double pink flowers of Colchicum ‘Water lily’ towards the front of the border. I would challenge anyone who does not favour grasses to find another species which offers colour and texture to match this diverse range of plants. As I sit in the autumn garden right now, perched on a cold metal bench, I can admire the wonderful tall arching stems of Stipa gigantea swaying in the gentle breeze. Standing proud since July, this majestic grass will carry on performing until the heavy snow flattens the delicate oat-like flower
26 HighcliffeEYE
spikes. If the subtlety of the grassy flowers are not enough to sustain your need for autumn colour, then try Aster ‘October Skies’ for a splash of late season lilac. The daisy like flowers are produced in abundance over a long period of time, and the great news is that it’s happy growing on dry poor soil in sun or even part shade. It won’t get much bigger than 45cm tall so doesn’t need staking and the colours seem to intensify as the light levels fall. As we progress further into the month, the bright yellows, oranges and reds synonymous with October, slowly deepen before fading to a muddy brown. As the aroma of decay intensifies, I notice the evening light fades faster of late, as the autumn sun sets on another gardening day. Happy Gardening, Lee
ings to Other fun th include: do this month Make chutney from the left over autumn harvest such as pears, apples and carrots. Stewed and pickled fruit and vegetables make great personalised gifts for Christmas Sow board beans now if you have a light soil or raised beds, and you will have an earlier crop next year. Give them protection with fleece to keep out the worst of the weather Move tender plants in to a heated greenhouse, or pot them on and bring indoors Continue to plant spring flowering bulbs including Alliums, Daffs, Crocus and Iris. Delay planting Tulips until next month. Collect seed from the garden and dry in paper bags. Sow them next spring and if you have too many give them away.

Line a large baking sheet with baking parchment. Put the stock in a large pan, bring to the boil and stir in the polenta. Simmer for 5min, stirring continuously (be careful – it may bubble volcanically!), until the mixture thickens. Stir in the Parmesan and lots of seasoning, then tip the mixture on to the prepared tray and spread to make a circle 30.5cm (12in) across. Leave to cool while you prepare the toppings. In a small bowl, stir together the tomato purée, oil and oregano with 1tbsp water to make a smooth sauce. Spread evenly over the polenta base leaving a 2cm (3/4in) border. Scatter over the mozzarella and antipasti and cook in the oven for 15min or until the cheese is bubbling and golden. Scatter over the rocket leaves, cut into wedges and serve.

Make a difference by helping to raise cash for Marie Curie
M
arie Curie is calling on the local community to help make a difference – by getting involved with the new Christchurch and Highcliffe fundraising group. Fundraising Groups play a very important role in the charity, helping to ensure that Marie Curie nurses can provide free care to sufferers of terminal cancer and other illnesses, within the comfort of their own home. A number of local volunteers have already put their hands up for the proposed group, but the group are still seeking further members. Local residents and supporters of the charity are invited to come along to a launch party for the group, which is to be held in October (venue and date tbc). The Christchurch and Highcliffe Fundraising Group will be aiming to fundraise for Marie Curie by supporting their main campaigns; The Great Daffodil Appeal collections during February & March and the Blooming Great Tea Party throughout the Summer months as well as organising local events such as quiz evenings. The Fundraising Group will in turn also help raise awareness of the Marie Curie Nursing services locally. Marie Curie Cancer Care provides nursing care, enabling terminally ill patients to be cared for in the comfort of their own homes. If you would like to be a member of this exciting new fundraising group or you would like to donate a couple of hours to assist the group with their fundraising activities, then please contact Dorset Community Fundraiser, Amy Salmon, on 01884 703537.
