- Captain Cameron of Waterloo

In Phil Tate’s Local History column in the June issue, which marked the bicentenary of the Battle of Waterloo, he mentioned that Captain William Cameron of Nea House, Highcliffe, is known to have fought in the battle. As I have been researching the Camerons of Highcliffe for many years and am in touch with the present-day descendants, Phil suggested that I should write a more detailed article about the local hero of Waterloo. It was Cameron’s father, General William Neville Cameron (1754-1837), who bought Nea House at the beginning of the 19th century when he retired after a distinguished military career. The mansion stayed in the family for four generations and was eventually demolished in 1940. Although much of the huge Nea estate was developed for housing, a substantial area is preserved as a wild life haven, Nea Meadows nature reserve. The general’s son, William Gordon Cameron, was born in India in 1790 during his father’s service there. After education at Harrow, he joined the Army as an ensign in 1809.

In the General Election of 1837, Cameron stood for Christchurch as a Liberal in a straight fight against the Tory candidate, Sir George Rose, of Sandhills, Mudeford. Cameron’s supporters gave out handbills with the message: “The Soldier of Waterloo. The Soldier of Barrosa.Vote for him, Electors, he has fought for you. The Laurel against the Rose.” It was all in vain. Rose, who had previously been Christchurch’s MP from 1818 to 1832, won the election by 116 votes to 105. Lord Stuart de Rothesay, at his newlybuilt Highcliffe Castle, had given his support to Rose. Cameron died in 1856, aged 65. A large gathering, including many of the local gentry, attended his funeral at St Mark’s Church, Highcliffe. Four of William Cameron’s five sons went into the Army, while the other served in the Royal Navy. His eldest son, General Sir William Gordon Cameron (1827-1913), inherited Nea House and became a colonial administrator. His second son, Colonel Aylmer Spicer Cameron (1833-1909), was awarded the Victoria Cross in 1858 for his “conspicuous bravery” during the Indian Mutiny.

He first saw action against Napoleon’s forces in the Peninsular War and was severely wounded in the Battle of Barrosa, fought in 1811 near Cadiz in southern Spain. Cameron recovered from those injuries and in 1815 was a captain in the 1st Foot Guards when, just six days before his 25th birthday, he went into battle at Waterloo as a staff officer to the British commander, the Duke of Wellington. During the battle, a cannon ball took away his right arm and badly lacerated his thigh. Ten days later, a surgeon investigating why the thigh wound was not healing found that fabric from Cameron’s trousers and fragments of silver coins in his pocket had been impacted onto his thigh bone. Cameron was able to continue his military career despite the loss of his sword arm - and was promoted to major in 1819. He was made a lieutenant-colonel in 1825 and finally retired in 1832. He settled into life as a country gentleman at Nea House with his wife Caroline and their five sons and five daughters. He involved himself in local affairs, became a Justice of the Peace and gave support to Christchurch Priory Church.

Oh dear, set the sad violin music playing and cast a woeful dewy eye across the weed strewn desolation that is Highcliffe’s little High Street (I’m joking!).

More shops are closing on the High Street, some that have been here for many years. However, times change and things are cyclical and all such sayings. I am from Dorset and knowing the area well, I have seen that most High Streets that are currently bustling along with vim and vigour, also had there lulls, lost their way and identity for a while. We are seeing new innovative and modern shops open and they are doing well! It is a process of change and does not happen overnight. I am excited at the prospect of what will be coming in now and I know of a few things that are brewing - I cannot wait. Meanwhile we have to keep the faith, try and pop into your village once a week to buy something. Times are a changing and with that comes possibility. Anyway enough of that! Nick Atkins formerly of Chewton Glen has pulled a blinder, I ate there last week and was bowled over by a great menu, fantastic food and the price! Over the summer holidays my son came to work in the office. Good experience and funds for him and essential cover for us. We quickly realised there was no shortage of choice. I have always wondered how small catering establishments make ends meet. You must have to sell a lot of teas, coffees and small-value items to cover rent, business rates, staff costs and other overheads that businesses have. Despite that, café society in Christchurch is clearly booming. We decided to try a different one each day, but soon realised we would never be able to visit them all. We counted a staggering 42 alternative lunch venues within Christchurch town centre and Bargates.

One unexpected benefit was that we had lunch together most days – but where to go?

The Council used to have a policy of no more than 30% of premises being cafes and restaurants. That has gone and the number has flourished. The advantage is a full high street 100 and a magnificently wide choice.

Christchurch Blue Plaques by Stephen Roberts No. 8 - The Famous Ferreys

None other than Thomas Hardy might have ended up working for him (Benjamin Ferrey that is). It’s time for plaque 10 on our trail at 6/6a Castle Street, today’s Pettengells Estate Agents. This house was originally built in the 17th century for a wealthy mercer, a dealer in fine fabrics, with today’s frontage added in the 18th century. The dwelling passed to the talented Ferrey family, who owned a drapery business in the High Street (today’s ‘Bookends’), from 1760 until 1936, where Benjamin Ferrey lived as a child. The most famous of the Ferreys was Benjamin Junior (1810-80), born in Christchurch, a quite brilliant architect and winner of the Royal Institute of British Architects’ (RIBA) Gold Medal in 1870. He started his own practice in London in 1834 and it was in April 1862 that the 21-year-old Hardy arrived bearing a letter of introduction. Ferrey had no work for him. The plaque tells us that Ferrey was a renowned ecclesiastical (church) architect, trained by the elder Pugin (the younger Pugin worked on the refurbishment of the Houses of Parliament after the 1834 fire). Ferrey had regular work with the Bath & Wells Diocese, where he was honorary architect for 39 years, which included much of the restoration work on Wells Cathedral. Ferrey also designed what became the cathedral of St Paul’s on the island of St Helena. Some of his practice’s early work was on the design of the new resort of Bournemouth, including the Royal Bath Hotel, which opened in 1838. Ferrey also left his mark in Christchurch, with

work in the Priory, St Luke’s Church (Burton) and the arched gateway and two chapels at Jumpers Cemetery. Ferrey Junior’s last design was Bagshot Park in Surrey, a commission from none other than Queen Victoria.

Is if that wasn’t enough, Ferrey was also an accomplished artist, painting seven watercolours to illustrate his book, ‘The Antiquities of the Priory of Christ-Church, Hampshire’ (1841), pictures currently in the Priory’s St Michael’s Loft Museum. Apparently Benjamin loved to draw in the Priory as a boy. He was, by all accounts, personable, good-natured and well-liked and had a son, Edmund Benjamin Ferrey, who also became an architect. Benjamin Ferrey Senior was a draper of Huguenot descent and mayor of Christchurch, who apparently left ‘diary jottings’ on the 18th century wainscot panelling (at 6/6a), discovered in a much later restoration. We should also not forget George Ferrey, Benjamin Junior’s brother, organist at the Priory for half-a-century and also mayor of Christchurch. A plaque in the Priory records that due to George’s exertions the organ was twice enlarged and reconstructed, in 1865 and 1890, the latter just a few years before George’s demise in 1893. Community Charity Fete 2015

For over 2 decades, the Rotary Club of Highcliffe Susan on Sea has been organising an Annual Community Charity Fete, held at the Recreation Ground, Lymington Road, Highcliffe, to raise funds for local Rotary sponsored charities as well as providing fundraising opportunities for smaller charities. This year more than 17 different charities were represented and it is estimated that in excess of £10,000 was raised between all of them, on a day which can only be described as being ‘perfect Fete weather’, slightly cloudy and warm with no rain. As entry is always FREE it is impossible to know how many local people and Highcliffe residents visited the ground to be entertained by a Zumba demonstration, an excellent display by the Bald Eagle Vulture and other larger Birds of Prey provided by the Liberty Raptor Centre, a fun 5-a-side football match and the inimitable style of Bobby the Clown entertaining the kids with his kiddies races and much, much more.

The award winning Highcliffe Charity Players are presenting “I Don’t Mean to be Rude…But…”, an entertaining evening of music, dance and comedy, performed cabaret style over four nights from Wednesday 9th to Saturday 12th September at St Mark’s Hall in Highcliffe. Tickets are £12.50 from the Regent Centre Box Office (01202 499199) and audiences are invited to bring their own picnic for the supper interval (bar available). As usual, profits will be donated to local charities. Charity Players’ regular forays into revue are legendary and our latest fast moving, laughter-packed show once again combines HCP’s well-loved formula of songs from the shows with comic sketches that are just that little bit risqué! Our director, Pete Whitaker, has chosen a variety of numbers from such musicals as the long running hit Miss Saigon, the recent smash hit The Book of Mormon and the Tony Award-winning Memphis. There is also a tribute to Frank Sinatra (born a hundred years ago this year) and some saucy songs from the likes of Fascinating Aida. The sketches too, are drawn both from old classics and current day humour. All the routines are performed to backing tracks to ensure that authentic ‘big band’ sound accompaniment. It’s always special for us to perform at St Mark’s Hall, where HCP began back in 1971. Our audiences seem to like watching our shows with a drink in their hand, sharing a table with friends and enjoying a supper in the interval. I do hope you can come and see us.

Teen Column September already? After a great summer 100 holiday with my friends, I now have to go back to 95 school. This year is one Laura 75 of the biggest years in my life, year 11. What I do this year could have a massive impact on what I end up becoming. After finding out my results 25 for my mock exams, I was planning to focus on the areas I needed to improve on the5 most, but that seems to be all areas. To get in to the 0 6th form I wish to go to, I need to get the right grades as well as standing out over many other applicants. The thing that saddens me the most is for some of my friends; this is their last year in the same school as me so I wont be able to see them as often anymore. I am already aware that some of my friends do want to leave and have looked into other places. During the holidays I learnt that one of my friends, who has been living in Christchurch for a couple of years, had never been to The Red House Museum, so I decided to take her there. The museum was great and my friend really enjoyed it. We especially liked the area with all the old fashioned clothing. What I liked was the change in the gardens; if you go at different times of the year, the change in flowers and scent is 100 amazing. The garden is so beautiful. There is a large tent in the gardens for fun games 95 and activities throughout the year. I recommend the museum and gardens for people of75all ages, as there is an endless amount of things to do. Just remember, if you have been there before to go again because so many things change 25 and there are always new things to do. It is free admission too but if you do wish to make a 5 donation there are boxes scattered about.

New Toilets and Refurbished Coffee Bar

Stop Press: TripAdvisor award the Regent their Certificate of Excellence Patrons of the Regent in Christchurch will be relieved to hear that the work on the new toilets at the Centre has been successfully completed on time. In addition, the Foyer Coffee Bar has also had a complete makeover, having been enlarged with new facilities and with more space to allow for a greater variety of confectionery, popcorn and hot and cold beverages. Flushed with the success of the renovations, the Management are certainly aiming high and the new loos at the Regent promise to be the best in Christchurch! It is interesting to think that when the Regent was built in 1931, indoor toilets were still a luxurious rarity with many houses still only having an outdoor privy to retreat to! Once again the Regent, as the leading public building in Christchurch, will be boasting the latest in WC comfort and technology for the benefit of all its patrons! The new toilet facilities, serving the Foyer and Auditorium, will include a doubling of the number of cubicles in the Ladies’ loos from the existing three to six cubicles; additional facilities in the Gentlemen’s toilets; improved access for the Disabled Toilet and eco-friendly, sensor

operated taps, lights and loos in all the new facilities. The entire project for the new toilets and coffee bar will come to approximately £100,000 including the cost of the twelve-day closure. The project has been financed from the Regent Development Fund, which is derived from ticket sales for shows, concerts and films. 50p of every ticket sold at the Regent is a contribution to the Regent Development Fund and now that money is being used to improve facilities for the community. In addition, generous donations from the general public, a £2,500 donation from the Bournemouth Airport Community Fund and a £200 donation from the Twynham Forest Group of Women’s Institutes have also been used to help fund the new toilets and Foyer coffee bar. Regent Centre Manager, Greg Rawlings, welcomed the opening of the new toilets: “It’s been worth every penny to have these new toilets up and running for our patrons. Their comfort and enjoyment is of paramount importance to all of us here at the Regent. All of our hard work is certainly paying off, because we have just heard that we have been awarded the TripAdvisor Certificate of Excellence for achieving consistently outstanding reviews from visitors to the Regent”.

With normality returning, I always get a little saddened at how much shorter the time is that I spend with my children when they are back into their equivalent of our 9-5 (see, I warned you of this in my last article!). With school looming, I take to making lists of things to do together and ways to give us all some respite. It’s difficult after a school day, the hours are limited and children tired, but I have found some little treasures that I hope will pass on some inspiration for a few ‘treat’ trips out.

1. The Regent Centre in Christchurch town centre has some great shows for September. Romeo and Juliet is being performed by the Royal Ballet and is to be shown live via cinema screen at 7.15pm on September 22nd and again on September 27th. I know a certain (smaller) ballerina that will love this. 2. The Clay studio in Christchurch is a lovely way for adults and children alike to unleash some artistic flare. The studio is open late until 10pm on Thursdays every week; they serve food and drinks so it could serve as an excuse to not cook that night as well... 3. The Red House Museum on Quay Road is open until 5pm Tuesday to Friday, so it could make for a nice after school trip. They have a lovely coffee shop to water the children and gardens to walk through whilst we still have some summer light. And (apart from the drinks!) it’s free.

4. Our local pool, Two Riversmeet, has an offer that lasts throughout September of £15 for 10 swims, saving up to £25. That is a fair bit of swimming, but even if you won’t quite make it into your costume that often, they are open most nights from 6pm-7pm for public sessions. Their hours do vary slightly day to day, so it’s best to check online before heading down. So, there are some ideas to play with, to try and catch a few more fun hours in the day before getting up and starting all over again with lunch boxes and missing school cardigans. HOW DOES YOUR GARDEN GROW? AUTUMN IS FAST APPROACHING

September 23rd is a special date in the gardening calender. The sun is directly above the earth’s equator and day and night are exactly the same length. Because of this, September is a pivotal month in the year: it heralds the end of summer and the start of autumn. It’s also a pivotal month in the garden. It’s a time of endings but also a time for rejuvenation. Summer plants fade and enter their dormant period, while leaves take on autumn hues: yet autumn crocuses push up through the soil, while bushes and trees are laden with fruit.

This dual aspect to September means that on the one hand I find myself preparing my garden for its long winter sleep, but on the other I’m planning ahead for next spring. So, while cutting down the perennials which have finished flowering I’m also checking to see if any have become too big for the space they’re in. If they have, I’ll divide them now, while the soil is still warm, and move them to another part of the garden, where they’ll flourish when the new growing season begins next year.

Likewise, I’m planning where any new trees or shrubs will go. I’ll get them in during September and they’ll be off to a flying start come Spring. My garden is chock-full of Spring bulbs already but I can always find room for some more. While I’m at it I’ll be planting a few in pots so I can be sure of a great spring display on

the patio. Meanwhile I look upon all the weeding, tidying and leaf-raking that I’m doing as an investment in compostable materials for my bin and my leaf-litter pile, which when left over the winter transmogrify into rich, crumbly compost and leaf-mould respectively. When dug into my soil in early spring it will give my garden a much needed shot of energy with which to kick off the growing season.

The autumn equinox is the gardener’s equivalent of the New Year. It’s a time to reflect on the past season while resolving to do even better in 2016.

Autumn Lawn Care

Sweep the leaves. I put mine in a perforated dustbin liner, in a dry spot and wait for them to rot down.

Rake. Use a wire rake to pull out all the dead moss and thatch. I put everything I collect into the compost bin.

Spike lawn. Push a garden fork right through the lawn into the earth below then rock it a little to open up the lawn’s surface and allow air in. Brush with top dressing This is available from garden centres. Brush it into the holes with a stiff broom. To make your own top dressing, mix 3 parts top soil with one part peat substitute and 6 parts sharp sand.

Pour into a 20x30cm tray lined with baking parchment. Level out the mix with a spatula. Bake in a preheated oven at 160 C / Gas 3 for 25-35 minutes. (These should look seriously under-baked, that’s the point. When they are done, if you grip the pan and give it a little wobble, it will look uncooked. This is perfect.) Cover with a clean tea towel and leave for a whole day or overnight till completely cold. If you try and turn them out before, they will be ruined. When they are completely cold, turn them out and cut into squares. Wrapped in cling film or foil these will last a week at least. They freeze well too!

Highcliffe Friends in Need are a group of volunteer car drivers who take, wait and fetch ‘clients‘ who live in the Highcliffe area to and from their medical appointments, i.e. local hospitals, doctors, dentists, chiropodists and opticians. The drivers can claim their petrol expenses, from the ‘suggested donations’ paid by the ‘client’. Telephone bookings for drivers are taken by our co-ordinators 2 -3 days in advance of the appointment, Monday - Friday, and this is where we need your help. We need a volunteer, your phone calls will be reimbursed to take any telephone bookings on Thursday mornings, 9.30pm - 12.30pm. Our current co-ordinator is retiring after 10 years! TUCKTONIA: THE INDIAN SUMMER Written by Alex McKinstry

On 14 July 1983, Peter Arnold, a former engineer who had been running some of the rides at the Tuckton Leisure Park, appeared on the front page of the ‘Echo’, standing in the shadow of Big Ben – or rather, the 13-ft. model of Big Ben, one of 200 models making up Tucktonia, the world-famous miniature landscape at the back of the site. Pictured with him were the three co-directors of Tasmavale Ltd, a newly-formed limited company, which had just bought the fun park for £1.25 million. The company renamed itself Tucktonia Ltd with effect from 7 November 1983; Peter was its managing director, and recalled the details of the take-over when I met up with him earlier this year. The park was “pretty run down”, said Peter, when his company acquired it, some of the models not having stood the test of time. The oil refinery, pictured below, had started rotting after standing in water for seven years, while Windsor Castle was in an equally sorry state (“I smashed it up”).

One of the company’s first moves was to develop the underutilised parts of the site; the paddling pool, for instance (35 ft in diameter, but hardly ever used) was converted into a boat ride, though it remained dormant after some mallard ducks built their nests in the driving machinery. Another new feature was the twenty-gun Hillbilly Shooting Gallery, purchased in Leicester for £37,000. Resembling an Appalachian mountain shack, it was presided over by a gun-toting model granny in a rocking-chair; she was not officially one of the targets, but she sat beneath a large cactus which squirted water, when struck, at the unsuspecting customers. It was Peter’s idea, too, to make the 44 • Highcliffe Eye • September 2015

most of the six-lane fun slide at the site by installing a haunted house under the stairs. “I put my mother-inlaw in charge of it.” These features were hugely popular, as was evident each summer, when the car parks overspilled: visitors even began parking on the golf course at the rear of the site. The company nevertheless faced some familiar difficulties: high maintenance costs, and opposition from local residents whenever new attractions were proposed. It was this that scuppered plans to bring a roller-coaster to the site. A Dutch firm, Vekoma, was willing to install a £1 million roller-coaster and to split the proceeds 50-50 for five years, after which Peter’s company would acquire the structure outright. “Admittedly, it wouldn’t have been in the best condition five years down the line,” says Peter today, “but I was an engineer – that didn’t worry me. But we couldn’t get planning permission.” The site’s previous owners, Grand Met, had faced similar problems in 1982, when they proposed installing a ‘Whirlwind Ride’; planning permission was refused, despite a petition containing 613 signatures in favour. It was against this background that, towards the end of 1985, the company resolved to sell the site – with the benefit of planning consent for 130 houses, plus a marina – and to set up shop elsewhere. The decision stunned local residents; but as Tex Rainger, the company’s finance director, explained to the ‘Advertiser’ of 17 July 1986, “the Stour Road site had become too small … They needed another site with more car parking to be able to house bigger rides.” It was hoped, Tex added, to keep the attraction within the Borough of Christchurch, but as we shall see in our next issue, the relocation never took place. When Tucktonia closed at the end of 1986, it did so for the last time ever. Demolition was underway that December, the Tucktonia flag – a chirpy robin, with a Union Jack breast – fluttering above the debris at half-mast.
