Sunshine at last! It’s amazing how much the sunshine can affect our lives in such a positive way, seeing everyone smiling and generally lifting everyone’s spirits. More of us are venturing out either to appreciate all the fabulous beauty spots we are fortunate enough to have here on our doorstep or to treat ourselves to a bit of shopping on our local High Streets. Please remember the importance of spending a little of your weekly spend locally – If every adult in BH23 spent £5 of their weekly spend locally, an amazing £8.2 million would be kept within our local economy each year. Wow, that really is a difference worth thinking about don’t you think? New this month, we have our ‘Community Notices’. Highcliffe Rotary Charity Fete
F
or the past twenty years Highcliffe Rotary Club has organised the Highcliffe Village Charity Fete on the last Saturday of July and continues to work closely with local Businesses, Charities, Youth and Church organisations to ensure the local community has an opportunity to raise funds for their respective causes and to showcase what Rotary does and can do for the Highcliffe community. Once again we would expect some ÂŁ10,000 to be raised by the various charities for the local community. The date this year is SATURDAY 27th July 2013 with the Mayor of Christchurch officially opening the Fete at 10.45 am on the Recreation Ground, Lymington Road, Highcliffe. There will be some fifty stalls and sideshows together with a selection of arena events including Birds of Prey, Morris Dancers around the Maypole, Display of Old Police Cars, Kiddies Races and Bobby the Clown. It is very much a Fun Day so please come along and support all of the Charities and you can find full details on our website: highclifferotary.org, or even better if you would like to help your local community you are invited to visit us on the day at Rotary Corner alongside the BBQ and the Ladies Teas. Update on Druitt Hall
F
ollowing the 18 month long campaign to retain a Community Hall in Christchurch Town Centre, a new community group, Druitt Hall Association Ltd. (DHAL), is negotiating with the Council with the aim of implementing the recent charitable offer of up to £1.5 million to build a new hall and up to £40,000 to refurbish the old hall and keep it running until the new hall is built. Having talked to residents and user groups, DHAL and the professional advisors of the Benefactor, Dr. Somerville Ford, have produced plans, which they believe will meet the needs of the community and also satisfy the Council. On 15th April DHAL submitted an outline Planning Application for a future hall built largely on the current (brown-field) site, with level access and proximity to bus stops but set back slightly from the High Street to open up the view of the gardens. DHAL is keen to preserve the environment and wildlife of the Druitt Gardens and present a design sympathetic to this Conservation Area. Public Consultation began with a big turn-out at Druitt Hall to see plans and hear the Architect and Town Planner describe the project, which was very positively received. DHAL urge the Council to stick to their agreed timetable of Committee meetings and to approve the Planning Application and Business Case. The current hall will take bookings at least through June and hopefully beyond. HIGHCLIFFE ON THE 1919 ORDNANCE SURVEY MAP When the word ‘map’ is mentioned most people think of the Ordnance Survey. Let us look at Highcliffe on the 1919 OS linen-backed map which is described as: Sheet 141 Ordnance Survey Contoured Road Map of Bournemouth and Swanage. Popular Edition price 2/6. Scale: One Inch to One Mile. On the cover an elaborate cartouche surrounds a cyclist perusing his map; he wears a Norfolk jacket, tweeds and plus-fours. He is sitting on a hillside with views of a thickly wooded valley below and a distant bridge and church. In the bottom right of the picture are the initials E.M. which stand for Ellis Martin (1881-1977) who was a talented artist employed by the Ordnance Survey. The map’s legend includes four categories of roads: 1. Good and fit for fast traffic. 2. Fit for ordinary traffic. 3. Indifferent or winding road. 4. Bad. In this edition there are fewer footpaths marked than in later editions when, thanks to the ‘mass trespass’ of 1932, public rights of way were created over open countryside.
of the Lymington road lies Highcliffe Castle surrounded by pockets of woodland. The few dwellings between Highcliffe and Christchurch include Bure Homage and Somerford Grange. What is the origin of the term ‘Ordnance Survey’? In the late 18th century Britain was under threat of invasion by France. The Board of Ordnance, a government department that dealt with testing and supplies of munitions and armaments to the armed forces, and with responsibilities for British arsenals and forts, began a survey of the country which lead to a series of maps produced for planning and defence. The Board’s origins date from the 14th century and its headquarters were in the Tower of London. It was abolished in 1855 and its role taken over by the War Office. The Ordnance Survey moved to Southampton in 1841. Many OS maps nowadays have photographs on the covers but the heyday was in the 1920s and 1930s when Ellis Martin and other artists drew beautiful landscapes for map cover illustrations. Increase of leisure pursuits in the years between the First and Second World Wars meant walking, hiking, cycling and motoring (for those who could afford it) became popular.
Highcliffe appears as a rural idyll on the 1919 OS map with scarcely a building in sight. North-west of the village, towards Hinton Admiral railway station, is wooded countryside showing Wolhayes, Holmhurst, Cranemoor Lodge and Amberwood House. To the east of Chewton Bunny is Naish Farm, and south

Apparently there have been fifty different ways to fold maps! The 1919 map is folded horizontally into three then concertinaed into the cover, but a purchaser wasn’t able to view the panels without unfolding the whole map. In 1938 the aptly named Alec Bender invented the type of folding map used nowadays where panels can easily be viewed without unfolding the whole map. Maps provide fascinating records of places that have changed throughout the years.

Mudeford Wood Community Centre Family Fun Day
O
n Saturday 8th June the volunteers and trustees of Mudeford Wood Community Centre are holding their second annual Family Fun Day from 10am to 4pm. With a theme of Superheroes and Princesses, children are encouraged to enter the fancy dress competition and enjoy the bouncy castles, face painting, and the various stalls and games. There will be a BBQ, refreshments, Grand Prize Draw and hopefully pony rides. The first family Fun Day in April 2012 raised over £1,700 and now the charitable trust running the centre is ramping up fundraising efforts to refurbish and improve centre facilities. The aim is to raise £49,000 to replace and enlarge the kitchen area by this Summer, and trustees hope proceeds from the Fun Day will go some way towards the outstanding £21,000 needed. Various fundraising events and grants secured from local community initiatives have already raised over £28,000. Stage two of the refurbishment plans, subject to planning permission, would see the current changing room areas completely refurbished and extended, providing greatly improved facilities for a number of the user groups. WELCOME TO CHRISTCHURCH Christchurch made the national media in the spring when a trader spoke openly that his business actually suffered due to tourists. This created a huge debate. To keep this vital income it is imperative that the town is kept attractive. By this I mean both visually, places to visit and by holding as wide a range of events as possible to keep people wanting to come back for more. This will be achieved not solely by the council, but by community effort. The Borough’s parks, gardens and floral displays are amongst the best in the country. Businesses can help the Council in these efforts through sponsorship and having baskets and flags where appropriate. Litter needs to be controlled, not only on shopping streets, but throughout the borough and especially its entrances. Businesses can ensure their premises are appealing and welcoming. Accessibility, cleanliness and great service are essential. Christchurch is a very active town with literally hundreds of community groups. From these, dozens of great events are organised by volunteers and held for residents and visitors alike. These also provide opportunities for all businesses to promote and showcase their goods and services. Christchurch should welcome its visitors and give them a positive experience, so that they will enjoy their time here, want to return and happily recommend Christchurch to others.

An English Mum
T
his month I have a confession and a challenge for you.
Confession first (don’t worry, it doesn’t involve dropping goats down a well or anything else worthy of getting on Rachel Simon Mayo’s show). No, my confession is that, despite living in Christchurch for over 20 years, I have only just visited Avon Beach for the first time! I always knew Christchurch had a beach, and I’ve been sunburnt while crabbing at Mudeford Quay on plenty of occasions, but I had never actually been to the beach part. I hang my head in shame. Avon Beach is definitely not the 7 miles of golden sands of Bournemouth. However, it is very interesting. There are lots of shells to rummage through and rocks to investigate, and a fresh, raw smell of the sea that urges you to have fish and chips for tea. Little green beach huts cradle the bay and look out across to the stunning view of the Isle of Wight, which is so close you almost feel like you could swim to the Needles. (I strongly suggest not trying this unless you are a fish.) Little boats bob in and out of the harbour, adventurous types bump over the crossing tides on jet skis and canoes, and the really brave blow around on wind and kite surfboards. When all that gets too exhausting to watch any longer, there’s a cafe to warm up in too! So, here is my challenge – however long you have been here, why not try and do something locally that you haven’t done before? Maybe you’ve never visited Avon Beach either! Perhaps you’ve always meant to climb up the ruins near the Priory but have never got around to it? Or maybe you’ve never been on the ferry boat across the river, or seen the view from The Priory tower. Have you walked up St Catherine’s Hill or visited the Red House Museum or Place Mill? There are lots more I haven’t mentioned – if you have a favourite local place you would like to share, why not pop it on our Facebook page (search under ‘Christchurch Eye’) for others to see. Garden View
What does your garden say about you? At a time when I’m making preparations for my summer holidays and browsing through pictures of tropical locations, I can’t help but compare them with the images of England that I hold in my mind. It wasn’t until I visited America last year, that I realised how very English we are, and how we really do live up to the stereotype we’ve been given. I wouldn’t say I’m a shrinking violet when it comes to confidence, but I really did feel quite reserved. As a nation, I don’t think we’re very good at expressing ourselves, our thoughts or our emotions, and whilst I’m not advocating yelling at random people in the street because “your dust cart is blocking my parking lot” or applauding in the cinema (both of which I experienced whilst over there last year), I do think that when it comes to gardens we are, in the main, a little unadventurous. In fact, I would go as far as to say that a striped lawn and three borders are as traditional as our Sunday roast!
But fear not, it doesn’t have to be this way. Expressing yourself outdoors needn’t mean exposing your inner most secrets, but I do think your outdoor space should reflect your personality. The residents at Bestall Towers are generally neat and tidy (in fact clutter makes my head hurt), so my garden reflects this with its simple straight lines, well ordered borders, immaculate patio, and perfect lawn! So what does my garden say about me? I’m a clean freak, with an obsession for perfection and a need to control my environment … pretty accurate I’d say. So what does your garden say about you? Does it reflect who you are, or maybe who you were? Maybe it’s time for a change and to let loose that wild side, paint the fence black and plant only orange flowering plants. International Pianist to appear at The Priory Christchurch Priory is thrilled to welcome the young international pianist Karim Said for an afternoon concert on our stunning Yamaha concert grand piano on Sunday 2nd June at 3pm. Born in Amman in 1988, London-based pianist Karim Said gave his Barbican debut playing with the English Chamber Orchestra and Sir Colin Davis in 2008. A few months later, his acclaimed BBC Proms performance of the Berg Chamber Concerto with Daniel Barenboim and the West Eastern Divan led to numerous future engagements, including a series of recitals at London’s Southbank Centre in 2013. At the age of eleven, Karim moved to the UK to study piano, composition and conducting at the Purcell School of Music. Karim’s musical development was captured in an hour long documentary, ‘’Karim’s Journey’’. The launch of the film in 2008, shown internationally and on BBC4, supported an already growing career as a pianist, which has taken him to such venues as Vienna’s Musikverein, the Berlin Philharmonic, Salzburg’s Mozarteum, the Great Hall of the Moscow Conservatoire, Milan’s La Scala, Manchester’s Bridgewater Hall, Abu Dhabi’s ‘’Khubayrat’’, and Seoul’s ‘’Jangcheon’’ Art Hall. After being awarded a full scholarship to study at London’s Royal Academy of Music in 2007, he received the first ever ‘’Enescu’’ Prize. Karim is currently studying for a Masters degree and is the recipient of over fifteen prizes and awards. The programme includes works by Liszt, Mendelssohn, Haydn, and Wagner. I
t is just a number of weeks since Christchurch had its own community concert band formed. Aptly named the Christchurch and District Band, it’s doors are open to anyone who plays a brass or woodwind instrument. There are so many “lapsed� musicians out there who used to play an instrument and simply gave it up because of life events, their children may now be grown up etc. and find now they have more time on their hands and would like to take up playing once again. The ability range in the band is huge from beginners to absolutely superb performers. All work well together.
The band recently had the privilege of leading the Bournemouth St. George’s Day Parade and have received wonderful reviews. They have many more concerts booked plus a visit to one of Christchurch’s twin Towns in Aalen, Germany to perform at their beer festival. The band has a wonderful friendly atmosphere, why not pop along to try us out with a view to joining. You’ll be made most welcome. Coffee and walnut cake cake is topped This classic coffee and walnut butter cream sed -infu esso with an easy espr icing.
Ingredients For the cake 225g/8oz unsalted butter, plus extra for greasing 225g/8oz caster sugar 4 free-range eggs 50ml/1¾fl oz strong espresso coffee 225g/8oz self-raising flour 75g/2½oz walnuts For the butter cream topping 125g/4½oz unsalted butter 200g/7oz icing sugar 50ml/2fl oz strong espresso coffee 12 walnut halves, to decorate Preparation method Preheat the oven to 180C/350F/Gas 4. In a bowl, beat the butter and sugar together until very light and pale. Add the eggs one at a time to the butter and sugar mixture, beating well to completely incorporate each egg before adding the next egg. Add the espresso to the mixture and stir well. Then add the flour and walnuts and stir well to completely combine. Spoon the cake mixture into two lined and greased 20cm/8in cake tins. Transfer to the oven to bake 25-30 minutes, or until a skewer inserted into the centre of the cake comes out clean and the cake is golden-brown. Remove the cakes from the oven and leave to cool on a wire rack. For the butter cream topping, beat the butter and icing sugar together in a small bowl until pale and light. Add the espresso and mix well. Spread the butter cream over the top of each cake, then place one cake on top of the other. Decorate the top of the cake with the walnut halves and serve in generous slices.

he award-winning Highcliffe Charity Players’ next show is Here we go again!, performed at our home base, St Mark’s Church Hall in Highcliffe, over four nights from Wednesday 24th to Saturday 27th July. The Players’ forays into revue are legendary – tuneful, exuberant and a little bit risqué! This fast moving, laughter packed evening is presented cabaret style with an interval supper and programme included in the ticket price of £15. There is one further performance (without supper) at the Regent Centre, Christchurch, on Sunday 28th July (£13). A wide range of song and dance medleys will be featured, chosen both from old favourites and current musical hits, to ensure there is something for everyone.
