We have another jam-packed edition for you this month full of local information and events to help keep you busy; one event in particular featured in this issue, is the RNLI Funday with a bit of something for everyone. This year sees their 50th Anniversary at the Mudeford Lifeboat Station, now that’s worth celebrating! Please do pop along and show your support for all the marvellous hard work that these volunteers do to help save lives at sea. The fun begins at 11am on Sunday 28th July at Mudeford Quay. Another feature worth mentioning this month is the Key Lime Pie recipe on page 35, my favourite dessert ever, particularly refreshing for this time of year and such an easy recipe to follow that you simply can’t go wrong. Christchurch Citizens Advice Bureau – become a Trustee!

e are a busy bureau helping local people with many issues including employment Debt, Benefits, Housing, and Relationships and the demand for our service is increasing. Last year the bureau helped local people with more than 15,000 issues and not surprisingly in these recession hit times, debt was our highest enquiry area. We helped manage more than 2 million of debt. We are an independent charity, governed by a Board of Trustees who are responsible for setting the overall direction and development of the bureau, employing the staff and controlling bureau finances, and ensuring that the bureau complies with relevant laws. Colin Wilson, the Chairman of the Board of Trustees said: “As well as our dedicated staff and volunteers, we need people from all sections of the community with a wide range of different skills, perspectives and experience. In particular, we need someone with financial skills who would be prepared to act as both trustee and Honorary Treasurer. The role is of course voluntary, but it is not onerous (we meet bi monthly at 5.30pm in Christchurch) and provides an excellent opportunity to get involved and help an important local charity. You will need to have the relevant financial skills and be able to attend the board meetings, and also provide some support between meetings, with our accounts and financial reports. The Water Poet’s Avon Adventure

xactly 390 years ago this month, Thames ferryman John Taylor embarked from London on an adventurous sea-journey that had the potential to change Christchurch forever... Born in 1578, Taylor grew up in the Elizabethan era of sea-faring adventurers and dramatic poets. After serving in the Navy he became a Thames waterman, but in his early 40s he began a series of extraordinary journeys that he recorded in a mix of verse and prose, thereby becoming known as ‘The Water Poet’. However, although he was a contemporary of William Shakespeare, his poetry is by no means comparable! In 1619 Taylor, accompanied by a vintner named Roger Bird, paddled 40 miles down the Thames from London to the Isle of Sheppey in a boat made of brown paper, using oars made from dried fish lashed to two canes. Naturally, this boat soon began to sink and was kept afloat only by attaching eight air-filled bullock bladders. This Richard Bransonlike stunt, which apparently attracted thousands of spectators, was undertaken to promote the value of hempseed - hemp and flax being used to manufacture rope, twine, nets, sails, and (utilising recycled rags) paper. Four years later, at the end of July in 1623, Taylor undertook a less frivolous water-borne adventure. Another waterman, Wiltshire-born Gregory Bastable, had suggested that the fortunes of his native Salisbury could be restored if shipping was able to easily reach the city from the sea, it being argued that “in the whole dominion of England, there is not any one Towne or Citie which hath a Navigable River at it, that is poore”. Determined to test this proposal, Taylor and his four-man crew set off from London in a wherry to venture around the coast to Christchurch. This hazardous sea-journey took them along the Kent coast, where they encountered a ‘merman’ (who proved to be a brawny Kentish fisherman wading in

the sea to harvest whelks and cockles). At Worthing they were apprehended by the local constable on suspicion of being pirates and had their oars confiscated. After nearly three weeks Taylor eventually recorded: “O’r depths, and flats, and many a ragged Rocke, We came to Christ-Church Hav’n [Haven] at five a clocke.” Although Taylor does not record where he and his crew lodged, he subsequently expresses his “thankfulnesse, To Sir George Hastings” and “thanks to Mr Templeman mine host”. Sir George Hastings was one of the two Members of Parliament for Christchurch and resided at the former Prior’s House. John Templeman was one of the town’s burgesses (unelected town councillors) and a former Mayor. Upon the continuation of his journey up the River Avon from Christchurch, Taylor recorded that “as I passed up the River at the least 2000 Swans, like so many Pilots, swam in the deepest places before me, and shewed me the way”. If Taylor’s estimate of the number of swans is at all accurate this must have been an amazing sight – if such numbers existed today the Christchurch Avon would easily beat Abbotsbury Swannery as a tourist attraction! Having successfully reached Salisbury, Taylor declared that the few shallows, mills, and weirs they had encountered presented no significant obstacle to making the Avon passable. Nevertheless, little was done and Christchurch Haven failed to become the anticipated seaport for Wiltshire. (Picture: A portrait of John Taylor set against a decorated 1613 map of Hampshire.)

It is possible that as a Thames waterman John Taylor could have carried William Shakespeare in the back of his river-taxi. This year’s annual performance by the Bournemouth Shakespeare Players in Priory House Garden will be the Bard’s dark comedy Measure for Measure, from Tuesday 16 July to Saturday 20 July, and Tuesday 23 July to Saturday 27 July at 7.30pm. MADE IN CHRISTCHURCH

am writing this month’s column on 6th June, the anniversary of D-Day, when, in 1944, thousands of Allied troops began the liberation of France from Nazi occupation. ‘What’s this got to do with a business column?’ you may ask.

I’ve recently returned from France, when we visited the Normandy beaches. These are now named after their D-Day codename and at Juno beach, outside the museum, stands a model of a Bailey Bridge. The Bridge was a temporary structure and it was invented and made here in Christchurch. Other famous innovations were developed in our town. Some may remember the giant Radomes set on Steamer Point in the 60s, which was a test station for the first British Skynet military communications system. (They’d never get planning permission these days!) Aerospace and industrial technology company, Penny and Giles, was founded in Christchurch by William Penny, best known for his work in developing the ‘black box’ flight recorder. Christchurch is a pretty remarkable place for creativity, particularly in highly-skilled products allied to the aerospace and telecommunications fields. But it’s not only high-tech, there are hundreds of businesses of all kinds in Christchurch creating, innovating and providing employment. Many work from industrial units on one of the Borough’s ten industrial parks, including the Airport. These businesses range from small workshops to large, internationally known companies. There are the one-man bands, motor vehicle mechanics, plumbers’ merchants, construction companies, distributors, light engineering companies, clothing, a world-class prosthetics company and all manner of work being carried out in our town. I recently watched a television programme about towns. It featured Huddersfield and showed that historically, and still today, cloth made there has ‘Made in Huddersfield’ clearly displayed and is recognised worldwide. Wouldn’t it be great to spread Christchurch’s reputation by proudly showing ‘Made in Christchurch’ on all goods produced here?

Christchurch Carnival 2013 - It’s Good News!

ey you! Stop groaning at the back of the room, you do want to know this! We have a new Committee and we decided to take the controversial step of listening to what you the public say and what you want. Times are hard and our Carnival could have gone the way of so many others and just stopped running. We decided to evolve and improve the carnival to include some of the ideas from our research. Personally I am a little hurt that my ideas of The Rolling Stones playing on the Bandstand, David Beckham in the Arena and Beyonce pole dancing in the beer tent were rejected all too quickly. Well to be fair the pole dancing decision took a bit longer but we enjoyed the discussion! Sadly, my alternative proposal of free beer went the same way! The new event will still be over two days – Saturday 17th August and Sunday the 18th but the carnival procession moves from the Saturday to the Sunday. We have taken on board comments about last year’s procession and have great plans to make this year a spectacle to be proud of. Our Fun Day on the Quay will just be on the Saturday now running all day from 10am through to 10pm with a very full programme of events and music. Free entry, naturally, and as usual we finish with the spectacular firework display, once again, very kindly sponsored by Cookes Furniture.

One other request we had was for more to involve the children. For the first time this year we will have a craft tent where they will be able to try different activities at a very reasonable cost. Coles funfair will be there as usual as will the beer tent to provide the necessary courage for the more adventurous rides.

What would the town be like if it lost its ‘high street’ shops; what would Highcliffe be without the shops along lymington Road? Totally Locally is about reminding people of what they have in their town, and that if they want to continue to enjoy these great things they only need to make small changes to make a large difference. Totally Locally Christchurch (TLC) is both a ‘Shop Local’ campaign and a showcase for Christchurch’s independent businesses and shops. It gives residents a reason to shop in Christchurch and reminds them of all the great things that they have and may have forgotten. It changes public perception and alters shopping habits so that locals look to spend money in their local shops instead of just at out of town venues. But TLC is more than asking you to support independent shops. It asks you to get behind all those that trade in the town from the smallest market stall to the supermarkets. It encourages you to spend some of your time and money buying things locally. Okay, we know it is easier to just pop into Sainsbury’s, the parking is easy and they sell so much of what you need, but just remember that for some things there is another alternative. We often hear that our ‘high streets’ are being overrun by national chain stores or charity shops and that town centres are on the decline. Well, take a look around Christchurch & Highcliffe and you can see for yourself the mix and wide variety of shops and businesses of all kinds available to you right on your doorstep. TLC is about working together to lift our whole town; about putting a face to your local business. It is a long-term campaign and one that has successfully changed both the bottom lines of shops and businesses and the way people to choose to shop.

et me introduce myself: I graduated as an Osteopath in 2010, after completing a four year degree course, similar to a medical degree but with the emphasis on musculoskeletal medicine. I went on to work and continue to work at several practices in the surrounding area before starting “Hands on Care Osteopathic Practice”. I am based at the Wessex Therapy Clinic which provides a professional but relaxed and friendly environment for treatment. It is easy to access by car, bus or train. I provide daytime, evening and weekend appointments.

Most patients seek osteopathic treatment because they are in pain, back pain being the most common complaint. However, osteopathy can help with many other issues. Each patient is an individual. Two people may present with similar problems but their postural patterns may be totally different, requiring different treatments. Every therapist has a slightly different approach. I like to use gentle joint movements to relax muscles and improve mobility, as well as stretching. I also use deep tissue massage which may not be quite so comfortable! Patients often describe this as a “good pain” as they know it is having positive effects. I incorporate craniosacral work and “dry needling” (acupuncture) into my treatments. I always discuss with my patients their treatment preferences and tailor each session to the individual. I like to give my patients advice on self management and exercises, to speed up their recovery and to help prevent reoccurrence of the problem. Over the next year I plan to write a series of articles which explain how osteopathy can help with certain conditions. An English Mum

here are certain sounds that tell me Summer has arrived; the drone of mowers on a Sunday afternoon; the hopeful jangle of the ice cream van; and the whistle of the steam trains from the nearby railway cutting, once again whisking happy tourists from London to the coast for the day, steaming through Christchurch Station on the way.

I confess to being a little bit of a geek where planes, trains and automobiles are concerned — not to the extent where I’d have an anorak and a notebook, but there is something about the sound and smell of coal fired engines which I find exciting. Maybe it’s because they evoke childhood memories of summer’s spent reading Enid Blyton and CS Lewis, where all adventures seemed to start with a journey on a steam train — or maybe I just read too much ‘Thomas the Tank Engine’ to my kids! A few years ago I remember noticing a small crowd of people stood on the Fairmile railway bridge. Knowing this could only mean one thing I raced home, charging into the house and yelling at the kids to come quick and follow me. They all ran out, somewhat bewildered, and chased after me along the railway alley towards the station. I could hear the familiar rumble in the distance followed by a long whistle, and screamed ‘Faster!’ at the kids (I may have dragged the smallest one a bit...). We all tumbled breathlessly onto the platform, whooping, waving and jumping up and down just as the steam train chugged majestically past — it was exhilarating! We fell about wheezing and laughing — it was only when the smoke cleared that we noticed the small, quiet groups of people on both platforms (mostly wearing anoraks and clutching notebooks) all staring at us... This year the Dorset Coast Express trains start on the 24th July, and you can find the timetable at www. railwaytouring.net Waving, whooping and jumping isn’t compulsory, but it does add to the fun! axon Square Shopping Centre in Christchurch is calling on children across the region to nominate their grandparents ahead of National Grandparent’s Day (06 October), a holiday established by Age Concern in 1990 to recognise the hard work and support grandparents give all year round.

With more than 14 million grandparents living in the UK, Saxon Square Shopping Centre wants to know why you think yours is the best. Purbeck Plod - Swanage to Kimmeridge Circular Area Swanage/Kimmeridge Distance 25 miles Difficulty Difficult Access Restrictions? No A strenuous circular route from the sea front in Swanage - great views along the coast going west and panoramic views of the valley down to Swanage and across to Poole Harbour on the way back to Swanage. How to get there: - Grid Reference 034773 - Durlston Country Park or Swanage Sea Front. Proceed to Swanage via Wareham and follow the signs to the sea front. Depending on the time of the year, you can park along the front or you will need to park in one of the car parks nearby. An alternative is to start from Durlston Country Park which is signposted from the sea front and is an excellent centre to explore a lot of fascinating information about the Jurassic Coast. It also has an information centre and café. Information: Toilets are available at both start points. Walk details:From the sea front, head west along the coast path, up to Durlston Country Park and follow the path along to Kimmeridge (12 miles). At Kimmeridge (toilets available), as you come into the grassy car park area, head diagonally across to the tarmac road. Follow the road for a short distance until you are at the end of the row of cottages.

right and follow the signposted track past Grange Arch (a folly which overlooks Creech Grange) and on to Corfe Castle (3 1/4 miles). This section onwards provides great views to both sides of the ridgeway. Follow the path along the ridgeway and you need to take one of the two opportunities to bear right and drop down to the lower path which takes you to the base of the Castle. Here, walk along the path to the left of the stream or along the road to come out on the main road opposite the National Trust car park. Turn right and proceed along the road for ¼ mile until the road turns sharp right up into the village. Take the lane to the left of this bend and follow the road for ¼ mile until it starts to bear to the right and you will see a gate and track to the left signposted Rollington Hill. Follow this path up onto Rollington Hill and on to Nine Barrow Down and then drop down to meet the Swanage – Studland road (2 ¼ miles). At the stile by the road, turn left and walk on the left verge of the road for ¼ mile, then cross over and take the path up to the obelisk and onto Ballard Down. After about 3/4 mile, take any of the paths that drop off Ballard Down to the right and follow the path into Swanage.

Turn right here and follow the path up across the field and up the short steep slope to the ridgeway (2/3 mile). Turn left at the top and proceed to the next stile (1/4 mile). Turn sharp right and head down the slight incline, through the small woods which will take you through Steeple Leaze farm and up to the road (2/3 mile). Go straight ahead and up the road for 1/4 mile until you meet a track to your right. Follow this track up to the ridgeway (300 metres). At the top you need to turn to your

Christchurch Festival 2013

he Christchurch Festival 2013 is nearly upon us. Taking place from Friday 5th July to Sunday 7th we have more than 15 bands over the course of the weekend plus many dance teams around the town on Saturday. Our headline band on Saturday night is the fantastic Jo Burt Experience. Jo has played with many famous people and bands, including the The Troggs, Tom Robinson, Freddie Mercury, Bryan Adams, Elton John, Bob Geldorf, Kim Wilde, Black Sabbath and many more. The Festival is put on by a small group of volunteers who arrange the marquee and fencing, organise the stalls and the licenses, find all the great bands and generally sort it all out. We get no help from the council and we are entirely self-funding. The Festival costs around ÂŁ6,000 per year to stage and itâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;s ticket money that allows us to do it every year. Weâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;d love to make it free and are always on the lookout for corporate sponsors. This year Chritax Taxis have been kind enough to support us and we are very grateful. Any surplus raised and the contents of our collection pots are all donated to the current Mayorâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;s charities, this year they are the RNLI, Autism Wessex and the Christchurch Priory Conservation Trust, three very worthwhile causes. Most years we are the biggest single contributor to the Mayorâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;s charities, having donated ÂŁ10,000 over the last three years. Weâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;re proud of that, lets hope for fantastic weather and a record-breaking year.

Key Lime Pie uit base - this Lime, cream and a buttery bisc a refreshing es mak t trea zesty oven-baked and indulgent end to a meal.

Ingredients 300g Hob Nobs 150g butter , melted 1 x 397g tin condensed milk (we used NestlĂŠ) 3 medium egg yolks finely grated zest and juice of 4 limes 300ml double cream 1 tbsp icing sugar extra lime zest, to decorate Preparation method Heat the oven to 160C/fan 140C/gas 3. Whizz the biscuits to crumbs in a food processor (or put in a strong plastic bag and bash with a rolling pin). Mix with the melted butter and press into the base and up the sides of a 22cm loose-based tart tin. Bake in the oven for 10 minutes. Remove and cool. Put the egg yolks in a large bowl and whisk for a minute with electric beaters. Add the condensed milk and whisk for 3 minutes then add the zest and juice and whisk again for 3 minutes. Pour the filling into the cooled base then put back in the oven for 15 minutes. Cool then chill for at least 3 hours or overnight if you like. When you are ready to serve, carefully remove the pie from the tin and put on a serving plate. To decorate, softly whip together the cream and icing sugar. Dollop or pipe the cream onto the top of the pie and finish with extra lime zest.

Stanpit Marsh bioblitz discovers 400 species A ‘bioblitz’ held over a 24-hour period at Stanpit Marsh Nature Reserve in Christchurch has logged more than 400 species of plants and animals. The event focused on finding and identifying as many species as possible on the marsh. Organised by Christchurch Council’s Countryside Service, it was designed as a way of carrying out an up-todate survey of the reserve but also to give everybody the opportunity to join in with the survey and find out about biodiversity and conservation. Throughout the day and night people had the chance to find out about the work of their local countryside service and to join scientists and naturalists to spot and add to the wildlife inventory for the marsh. The Saturday day-time events included an early morning photographic workshop, bird tours, plant walks, pond and stream dipping and minibeast safaris. The evening kicked off with a dusk bird walk, a hunt for reptiles and amphibians, a bat talk and walk and moth trapping. There was even a history walk with a re-enactment of smuggling that looked particularly spectacular against the full moon. An astronomer was on hand to tell people about the night sky, including a rare triple planetary conjunction of Jupiter, Venus and Mercury. The moth trappers were last to bed, trapping until past 1.00am. Sunday morning began bright and early with a dawn chorus walk. Early risers were treated to a fully organic breakfast served on the porch of the MarshPod information centre after the walk. The finale to the event, which came some 25 hours after the start, was the grand opening of the previous night’s moth and mammal traps. Over 200 plants were identified, with a few that hadn’t been recorded for several years, 20 species of lichen and six species of moss. Also recorded were 50 invertebrates, including 35 spiders, more than 80 birds, three fungi and eight species of mammal including dog, cat, cow, horse, mole, rabbit woodmouse and, of course, human. As well as an important audit of the health and wellbeing of the marsh, the event was also designed to promote public interest in biodiversity. Senior Countryside Officer Peter Holloway said: “The bioblitz was an opportunity to encourage more public participation in nature conservation through a series of guided walks and workshops. With the public’s help we were able to conduct an intensive field study of the reserve that will add to our knowledge of the marsh. “We were fortunate to have a good number of wildlife experts with us from a number of groups including the Friends of Stanpit Marsh, Christchurch Harbour Ornithological Group and the RSPB. There were botanists, entomologists and an even an arachnologist who alone recorded 30 species of spiders.”

ast year, 44 house fires in Dorset didnâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;t activate the smoke alarm because the fire was outside its range, so Dorset Fire and Rescue Service and the Fire Kills campaign are encouraging people in Dorset to take a second look at their fire protection and make sure itâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;s up to scratch. With the majority (86%) of the country owning a smoke alarm, itâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;s clear that most people know a working smoke alarm can save lives, providing those vital few seconds needed to escape a house fire. But if your smoke alarm isnâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;t in the right place, it might note alert you in time. Itâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;s one of the biggest reasons why smoke alarms donâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;t sound in a fire across the country. Thatâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;s why Dorset Fire and Rescue are asking people to think about where their smoke alarm is placed and whether they to fit another to ensure they have the time to get out, stay out and call 999. Kate Huelin, Home Safety Manager at DFRS said: â&#x20AC;&#x153;The vast majority of us now have at least one smoke alarm in our homes, but early detection and warning is vital to reduce the devastation a house fire can cause. Placing smoke detectors in rooms where there are electrical appliances, could give you the extra warning you need. â&#x20AC;&#x153;Itâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;s also important to remember that smoke alarms donâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;t last forever. The power might work, but the mechanism deteriorates with time. So whether they are battery operated or wired to the mains, to work at their best they should be replaced every ten years.â&#x20AC;? We offer these five smoke alarm top tips: â&#x20AC;˘ Install a smoke alarm on every level of your home. â&#x20AC;˘ The ideal position is on the ceiling, in the middle of a room or on a hallway or landing. â&#x20AC;˘ Consider fitting alarms in other rooms where there are electrical appliances.
