A DAY IN THE LIFE OF.....
......A Sea Cadet By Travis Fry My name is Travis, I’m 11 years old and I go to Christchurch Junior School. I started Christchurch Sea Cadets at Portfield hall last September. At first I didn’t really want to go but my mum made me for at least one evening but as soon as I started I really enjoyed it there because we get to do all sorts of things like cooking, camping, tying knots and loads more. In the summer we go to the boat station down on the Quay and go boating on the river in all sorts of types of boats like power boats, kayaks and sailing boats. One evening, when we were rowing, one of the other boats capsized so we had to rescue them but when we got to them the current took us away so we had to be rescued ourselves! At the moment we need to do more fundraisers than normal because the cost of fuel has gone up and we have also lost our fuel sponsor this year. The fundraisers allow us to go boating so we’re not always stuck in the hall. The first fundraiser I did was bag packing at Sainsbury’s. Not only did we get to raise lots of money for our unit, someone even gave me a box of Christmas chocolates! Last week we had a fundraiser at the Boat Station where we all took cakes, sweets and toys to sell to anyone that came by. We had lots of jobs for sea cadets to do there and some of us even ended up being entertainment to attract customers by singing songs with one of our PO’s. We earn achievement badges - I now have three badges; my ‘Unit’, my ‘Community & Citizenship’ & my ‘Junior 1st Class’ badge. I’m currently working towards earning my ‘Waterborne’ badge. In September when I go to Twynham I will become a Senior Cadet. Senior cadets can go two evenings each week rather than just the once. I’m very much looking forward to it especially in the summer when we are on the water because we have so much fun.
Do you work for, or attend a charity or a non-profitable organisation which you think our readers may find interesting? Email Cheryl at info@christchurcheye.co.uk for more information
I hope you’ve enjoyed reading about a little of what we do at sea cadets. If you want to find out more about sea cadets and our unit, please go to the website http://units.ms-sc.org/christchurch/
About Christchurch Sea Cadets Christchurch Sea Cadet Unit is also known as T.S. Woollard. Each unit is given a T.S. (Training Ship) name in line with the Royal Navy tradition, although land based. The Sea Cadet Corps is a national youth organisation for boys and girls aged 12 to 18. Christchurch Unit also has a Junior Section for those aged between 10 and 12 years. The aim of the Sea Cadet Corps is to help young people towards responsible adulthood, by encouraging valuable personal attributes and high standards of conduct, using a nautical theme based on the customs of the Royal Navy. Through adventurous activities Cadets become self reliant, and through team work Cadets develop consideration and respect for others. The Corps encourages high personal standards and a sense of purpose, and provides a sound foundation for future careers. Each Sea Cadet Unit is overseen and looked after by a Unit Management Committee (UMC). This is required as the Unit is a registered charity. The UMC is made up of parents, helpers or anyone wishing to be involved (you do not need to be ex-Navy). Currently there are four members in the UMC and they are always on the lookout for helpers. Typical activities are to fund raise, organise the purchase of new equipment and to look after the maintenance of unit facilities. It can be fun and we need all sorts of skills. If you do not fancy being on the UMC there is an active Parents and Supporters Association who raise money for the Cadets’ needs. The PSA meets on a monthly basis and organise social and fundraising events. New members are always welcome. The UMC meet on the first Tuesday of every 2nd month at 19.15 hrs. We are also seeking a fuel sponsor so that our cadets may continue with the use of our boats. If you think you can help or know of anyone that maybe able to help, please do get in touch. QUEEN OF TOWNS? Mary Portas, known as the Queen of Shops, has been appointed by the government to lead an independent review of High Streets, looking at what can be done to bring shoppers back to the once thriving hubs of community life.
We are a family run carpentry & locksmith company based in Christchurch with over 25 years of experience. Fully security checked
Julie
The first thing she will find, no doubt, is that High Streets have many competitors who are at an advantage. Out of town retail areas with free parking have had a huge impact. Then there’s increasing use of internet shops, without High Street overheads. Add to this continually increasing high rents and business rates, staff costs and red tape and then mix in high car parking charges and the odds are stacked firmly against the small towncentre business.
Services include:
24 hour emergency call outs for locks. Security lock up-grades. Emergency boarding up and glazing. All carpentry work undertaken. Handmade bespoke furniture. Fitted wardrobes, kitchens, laminate flooring, doors. Replace misted up double glazed units. Commercial and private maintenance. All work guaranteed.
3 Portfield Rd, Christchurch, Dorset BH23 2AF Tel: 01202 473269/07709 318178 Fax: 01202 475152
Large supermarkets now sell electrical goods, clothing, gifts, books and CDs, in fact everything that would once have been found in small High Street shops. So, what will Ms Portas come up with as a solution? Could it have relevance here in Christchurch? Christchurch is already an attractive town. In the summer months, flags and floral displays create a welcoming atmosphere. But this has to be worked upon. The streets need to be clean and shops made attractive with excellent customer service. Signage, maps and information need to be freely available and accessible to help locals and visitors alike to find what they want, or even find items they were unaware were available.
JT’s BLINDS A local company with 25 years experience, JT’s Blinds offer a complete service
Of course, this costs money and in times of austerity hard to find, but it’s not impossible. Strong trader leadership is needed. Christchurch Chamber of Trade not only works alongside the Council but also lobbies it and the more traders and businesses that get behind the Chamber, the more weight it will have to achieve what’s best for the town. It would be good to see more local shops joining.
Free quotations, choose patterns in the comfort of your own home. Flexible appointments available.

Teen Column June and July are predicted to be the hottest months we’ve had in years, which makes me so unbelievably excited about the long summer ahead. Whilst working at WHSmith’s, I have recently noticed how many tourists are coming and enjoying Christchurch. This really shouldn’t come as a surprise; with so much on offer over the next few weeks, it’s perfect for everyone.
Brogan
To start off the summer, I always visit Stanpit Marsh Recreation Ground for one of the Lion’s Club Car Boot Sales. Not only do all proceeds go to charity, but also it’s a great way to sell my old things and find cheaper alternatives! My Grandma and I will unfortunately being doing it on our own this year, but I know my Grandad will be watching us proudly.
“Training today’s people for tomorrow’s world!” Questions: Does your business have the resources and skills needed to capitalise on any economic upturn? Have you struggled to recruit skilled people and are now ready to consider an alternative? Have you reviewed your workforce and feel you need to inject new ideas, enthusiasm and energy into your workforce? Skills shortages are a key threat to the future growth of UK businesses. So, why not benefit from government funded training support to help your business – large or small? This could be either: To develop your staff, through an office-based apprenticeship in business administration, or IT To develop the business owner/leader (up to £1,000 grant)

The next exciting event is the French Market, which brings a diverse culture of stalls on the 24th- 26th June. This is very traditional and generally includes pancakes, cheeses, freshly baked bread and patisserie. Similar to the Food and Wine Festival, it is a great day out and attracts locals and tourists. Finally, an event that I have personally visited every single year since I can remember is Mudeford Lifeboat Fun Day. Held on July 24th, it is an absolutely fantastic day filled with lifeboat demonstrations, fun fair rides, a BBQ and plenty of stalls. My favourite event is definitely the fancy dress raft race, which local companies enter having spent weeks building and organising. It certainly entertains everyone! To end the evening, live music and a Grand Firework Finale. Perfect. Enjoy the sun and take advantage of all the events in Christchurch. Love,

LOCAL AUTHOR’S NEW ADVENTURE MYSTERY Local author, Julie Ratcliffe, hopes to both thrill and inform readers with her first children’s novel, The Thirteenth Box. Set in Christchurch in 1780, it is full of details of life at that time with the added benefit that many of the locations can still be visited. The Thirteenth Box is a fast-paced adventure mystery which tells of a mysterious machine brought into the town through the harbour in a cargo of boxes, and of the fight between gangs of smugglers to obtain the whole set. Three children, each from different backgrounds, meet by chance and, facing great danger, become embroiled in the adventure.
“I wanted to create a world that was both exciting and interesting,” said Julie. “Christchurch at this time was a small town, but smuggling was rife. I hope anyone picking up the book will not only experience a great read, but will enjoy finding out what are things like ankers, spout lamps, bone boxes and fart followers. I also feel there aren’t enough books attractive to boys, so the book has fights and cursing, some nasty baddies and smelly-breathed, drunken adults!” The Thirteenth Box is the first in a series of Smugglers’ Town Mysteries. Aimed at children aged 9 and over, it will appeal equally to boys as well as girls.
The Thirteenth Box J. Box A. Ratcliffe The Thirteenth “... Step back in time to a place where, for many, smuggling was a way of life and where three children become entangled in a dangerous fight to obtain boxes holding parts of a mysterious machine - including the all-important thirteenth box...” A classic tale of mystery and adventure set in Christchurch ... and adventure set here A classic tale of mystery here in Christchurch ...

Local History
Christchurch Bowling Club June 2011 saw the centenary of the Convent Walk footpath, one of Christchurch’s most interesting and attractive features. To commemorate this anniversary, throughout the year these Christchurch Eye Local History articles are featuring a few of the historic landmarks that can be seen on a stroll along Convent Walk. Few bowling clubs play on a more idyllically situated green than this one. However, the genteel summer contests take place on land that was seized after a far more ruthless conflict. This whole area was once within the bailey – the defended courtyard - of Christchurch Castle. It is not known with certainty when the first castle was built, but it is possible that a wooden fort was erected here within months of the Norman Conquest in 1066 - leaving the residents of Tweoxneam in no doubt that the English were a conquered people. The game of bowls dates back to at least medieval times and the oldest surviving green in the world is reputed to be the Old Bowling Green in Southampton, which was created for the warden of God’s House Hospital and first used for bowls in 1299. Perhaps the constable of Christchurch once played bowls within the castle bailey? Possibly, but from the mid-14th century it was the constable’s duty to impose the royal ban on bowls, along with other sports that distracted people from their archery practice. A late‑18th century map shows that this area was already in use as a bowling green. It was reached by a small bridge across the millstream between the Constable’s House and the Gin Hatch. The bulk of the site was later acquired by the King’s Arms Hotel, which used it for tennis courts and croquet lawns. It is still owned by The Kings Hotel. Christchurch Bowling Club was formed in 1925 with
some thirty-five members. The chairman was the Mayor, Alderman Norman Barnes, who was reportedly as ‘keen as mustard’ about the game. Because the newly laid green was not quite ready the members had to practice on the adjoining lawn. In July, after only nine days practice, the Club challenged the King’s Park Club to its first game. King’s Park took an early lead and, although the inexperienced Christchurch side gave a creditable account and at one stage drew level, the final scores were King’s Park 28, Christchurch 20. Nevertheless, the Christchurch Times optimistically reported that ‘There is material in plenty in the club to make a splendid team’. The present pavilion was erected in 1988 to replace the sixty year-old clubhouse (situated on the Castle Street side of the green) which had been damaged by fire. The design for this new pavilion was inspired by Victorian seaside architecture and the early plans submitted by architect Peter Dowsett featured much ornamental metalwork, but most of this was eventually substituted with timber. The cedar shingle roof was originally adorned with a pair of imitation magpies – a decoration intended to deter other birds from the green. Christchurch Bowling Club wants to encourage the community to become involved in the sport so that the tradition of bowling at the heart of the town might continue into the future. It therefore invites new members. The playing season runs from April to September. For more information visit: www. thekings‑christchurch.co.uk/bowling‑club or contact Colin Clark on 01202 482869.

Mudeford Arts Festival Swan Down to Mudeford Arts Festival 30th & 31st July 2011 Last year’s Mudeford Arts Festival was a vibrant event in brilliant sunshine, with a ten foot magnificent Mudeford Mermaid as the centrepiece. escorted by mini mermaids Three thousand visitors voted for their favourite art work, 14 pictures were sold from the main marquee, and there were workshops, entertainments, ice cream and puppets. Flashing CDs decorated marquees and stalls to add to the sparkle. 2011’s Mudeford Arts Festival is going to be even bigger and better! On Saturday the 30th July 11-8 and Sunday 31st July 11-4 there will be lots of things to see and do on Mudeford Quay Green. Note extended Saturday hours. Entry is FREE to all visitors. An artists’ tented market will spring up, exhibiting and selling local arts and crafts, and artisanal food and drink. Refreshments will be available. We are encouraging everyone to use the swan theme for the decoration of their stands. Entertainments includes Zorbing, origami , arts and crafts workshops , and a fun mini train. The performance pod will host, among other things, local poets and a drumming workshop, and we’re looking for more perfomers. There’s a puppet show (including a wayward swan). The main marquee will be full of Mudeford Arts Club works for sale and visitors will again vote for their favourite piece. This successful strategy made people go around the exhibition at least twice, looking very carefully at the works. If you would like to show in there do join us for £5 (payable to Mudeford Arts Festival), and we will welcome you and send you an application form. A second marquee will house local arts and crafts for sale. You are invited to submit work for exhibition and invite local artists, craftspeople and performers to get in touch and get involved. www.MudefordArtsFestival.org
