We have another jam-packed edition for you this month full of local information and events to help keep you busy; one event in particular featured in this issue, is the RNLI Funday with a bit of something for everyone. This year sees their 50th Anniversary at the Mudeford Lifeboat Station, now that’s worth celebrating! Please do pop along and show your support for all the marvellous hard work that these volunteers do to help save lives at sea. The fun begins at 11am on Sunday 28th July at Mudeford Quay. Another feature worth mentioning this month is the Key Lime Pie recipe on page 18, my favourite dessert ever and is particularly refreshing for this time of year and such an easy recipe to follow that you simply can’t go wrong. Is your smoke alarm placed for protection?
L
ast year, 44 house fires in Dorset didn’t activate the smoke alarm because the fire was outside its range, so Dorset Fire and Rescue Service and the Fire Kills campaign are encouraging people in Dorset to take a second look at their fire protection and make sure it’s up to scratch. With the majority (86%) of the country owning a smoke alarm, it’s clear that most people know a working smoke alarm can save lives, providing those vital few seconds needed to escape a house fire. But if your smoke alarm isn’t in the right place, it might note alert you in time. It’s one of the biggest reasons why smoke alarms don’t sound in a fire across the country. That’s why Dorset Fire and Rescue are asking people to think about where their smoke alarm is placed and whether they to fit another to ensure they have the time to get out, stay out and call 999. Kate Huelin, Home Safety Manager at DFRS said: “The vast majority of us now have at least one smoke alarm in our homes, but early detection and warning is vital to reduce the devastation a house fire can cause. That’s why it’s so important that your smoke alarms are in the right place to have the best chance of alerting you and your loved ones to a fire.” Kate continued: “You should make sure you have at least one smoke alarm on every level of your home, preferably in hallways and landings. Placing smoke detectors in rooms where there are electrical appliances, could give you the extra warning you need.
• Don’t put alarms in or near kitchens and bathrooms where smoke or steam can set them off by accident. • Replace your smoke alarms every ten years. Christchurch Citizens Advice Bureau – become a Trustee!
W
e are a busy bureau helping local people with many issues including employment Debt, Benefits, Housing, and Relationships and the demand for our service is increasing. Last year the bureau helped local people with more than 15,000 issues and not surprisingly in these recession hit times, debt was our highest enquiry area. We helped manage more than 2 million of debt. We are an independent charity, governed by a Board of Trustees who are responsible for setting the overall direction and development of the bureau, employing the staff and controlling bureau finances, and ensuring that the bureau complies with relevant laws. Colin Wilson, the Chairman of the Board of Trustees said: “As well as our dedicated staff and volunteers, we need people from all sections of the community with a wide range of different skills, perspectives and experience. In particular, we need someone with financial skills who would be prepared to act as both trustee and Honorary Treasurer. The role is of course voluntary, but it is not onerous (we meet bi monthly at 5.30pm in Christchurch) and provides an excellent opportunity to get involved and help an important local charity. You will need to have the relevant financial skills and be able to attend the board meetings, and also provide some support between meetings, with our accounts and financial reports. Country Houses Belvedere – Wolhayes – Marydale The estate was bounded by Braemar Drive, Hinton Wood Avenue and in the south by the Lymington Road and apart from Hoburne is probably the oldest estate in Highcliffe. There have been two houses on this estate. The first was Belvedere. It was described in the Christchurch Miscellany, dated 1790, as “a neat little mansion which could be seen from the sea.” According to an old map, Belvedere was built nearer to Hinton Wood Avenue than the second house which was called Wolhayes. Belvedere was probably built in the 18th century and demolished at the beginning of the 20th century. It was the home of Sir William Fordyce, M.D., Lord Bute’s physician. He wrote many medical books but his special interest seems to have been the use of rhubarb for medical purposes. He wrote a paper entitled the The Great Importance of Cultivating and Curing Rhubarb for Medical Uses, for which he gained a gold award from the Society of Arts.
In 1868 Mrs Martin, widow of the late Mr C. Martin was in residence at Belvedere. Her daughter, Sarah Amelia, married Lord Amphlett, a lawyer and Member of Parliament, in 1880. The next residents were Mr and Mrs Entwistle and their family of eight children. He was a
magistrate and a school manager. Mrs Entwistle erected a gravestone in St Mark’s churchyard to William Shaw who was coachman to Mr Entwistle for 27 years. Wolhayes, the second house, was built by the Mills family in the early part of the 20th century in the style of the White House in Washington D.C. During the Second World War a bomb fell on the soft ground near the lake (now Lyme Crescent) and despite repeated attempts to dig it out, the bomb sank lower and lower into the mud. Eventually it was decided to leave it – as no one was likely to walk there … presumably it remains to this day. Miss Mills was the last resident and when she died the house was bought by the Community of the Handmaids of the Sacred Heart of Jesus. The house was reopened on September 22nd 1953 as a girl’s day and boarding school called ‘Marydale’. Sister Bernadine, one of the teaching staff, recalls the beautiful gardens brilliant with azalea blooms, a Ha-Ha and an espalier wall. The Community was a closed order and its members were not allowed to leave the grounds except to visit the dentist. It was even necessary, at that time, to get permission from Rome if an educational visit was planned for the girls. A short distance from the house a block of sixteen classrooms was built with a gymnasium. In 1970 the Community left Highcliffe and the old house and the new buildings were demolished and the Wolhayes Garden Estate was built. Pictures: Belvedere (left) Wolhayes (top right).

Have you been diagnosed with Primary/Secondary Lymphoedema, Lipodema or any other oedemas? Do you wear a compression garment? Have you had any (MLD) Manual Lymphatic Drainage treatment? I have recently been diagnosed with primary lymphoedema in both my legs and I am now wearing compression tights. Friends and family have been very supportive although they, like me, knew very little about this condition. I was not aware that it could affect all parts of the body, or what type of treatment would help in the management of this (at present) incurable condition.

MADE IN CHRISTCHURCH I am writing this month’s column on 6th June, the anniversary of D-Day, when, in 1944, thousands of Allied troops began the liberation of France from Nazi occupation. ‘What’s this got to do with a business column?’ you may ask.

I’ve recently returned from France, when we visited the Normandy beaches. These are now named after their D-Day codename and at Juno beach, outside the museum, stands a model of a Bailey Bridge. The Bridge was a temporary structure and it was invented and made here in Christchurch. Other famous innovations were developed in our town. Some may remember the giant Radomes set on Steamer Point in the 60s, which was a test station for the first British Skynet military communications system. (They’d never get planning permission these days!) Aerospace and industrial technology company, Penny and Giles, was founded in Christchurch by William Penny, best known for his work in developing the ‘black box’ flight recorder. Christchurch is a pretty remarkable place for creativity, particularly in highly-skilled products allied to the aerospace and telecommunications fields.

I recently watched a television programme about towns. Key Lime Pie uit base - this Lime, cream and a buttery bisc a refreshing zesty oven-baked treat makes l. mea a to end t and indulgen
Ingredients 300g Hob Nobs 150g butter , melted 1 x 397g tin condensed milk (we used NestlĂŠ) 3 medium egg yolks finely grated zest and juice of 4 limes 300ml double cream 1 tbsp icing sugar extra lime zest, to decorate Preparation method Heat the oven to 160C/fan 140C/gas 3. Whizz the biscuits to crumbs in a food processor (or put in a strong plastic bag and bash with a rolling pin). Mix with the melted butter and press into the base and up the sides of a 22cm loose-based tart tin. Bake in the oven for 10 minutes. Remove and cool. Put the egg yolks in a large bowl and whisk for a minute with electric beaters. Add the condensed milk and whisk for 3 minutes then add the zest and juice and whisk again for 3 minutes. Pour the filling into the cooled base then put back in the oven for 15 minutes. Cool then chill for at least 3 hours or overnight if you like. When you are ready to serve, carefully remove the pie from the tin and put on a serving plate. To decorate, softly whip together the cream and icing sugar. Dollop or pipe the cream onto the top of the pie and finish with extra lime zest.

here are certain sounds that tell me Summer has arrived; the drone of mowers on a Sunday afternoon; the hopeful jangle of the ice cream van; and the whistle of the steam trains from the nearby railway cutting, once again whisking happy tourists from London to the coast for the day, steaming through Christchurch Station on the way.

I confess to being a little bit of a geek where planes, trains and automobiles are concerned — not to the extent where I’d have an anorak and a notebook, but there is something about the sound and smell of coal fired engines which I find exciting. Maybe it’s because they evoke childhood memories of summer’s spent reading Enid Blyton and CS Lewis, where all adventures seemed to start with a journey on a steam train — or maybe I just read too much ‘Thomas the Tank Engine’ to my kids! A few years ago I remember noticing a small crowd of people stood on the Fairmile railway bridge. Knowing this could only mean one thing I raced home, charging into the house and yelling at the kids to come quick and follow me. They all ran out, somewhat bewildered, and chased after me along the railway alley towards the station. I could hear the familiar rumble in the distance followed by a long whistle, and screamed ‘Faster!’ at the kids (I may have dragged the smallest one a bit...). We all tumbled breathlessly onto the platform, whooping, waving and jumping up and down just as the steam train chugged majestically past — it was exhilarating! We fell about wheezing and laughing — it was only when the smoke cleared that we noticed the small, quiet groups of people on both platforms (mostly wearing anoraks and clutching notebooks) all staring at us... This year the Dorset Coast Express trains start on the 24th July, and you can find the timetable at www. railwaytouring.net Waving, whooping and jumping isn’t compulsory, but it does add to the fun! Garden Travels As I take a break from the heat of the midday sun perched under the shade of a Banyan tree, I am staggered by its beauty and the clever way it has adapted to colonising and ‘getting around’. The large structures which develop from the underside of the 20 foot high branches head south and take root into the dry dusty soil as they hit the ground. With a record high temperature of 100 (f) and only 30 inches of water per year these are pretty hostile conditions - you may have noticed, I am not in the UK! An 11 hour flight will transport you Key West, Florida where the views are simply breathtaking and although some locals claim you can almost see Cuba (at a mere 90 miles out to sea?) I found some of the best views had no distance at all. For me the most stunning were the small, intimate courtyards created to the front and rear sides of the colonial houses. These beautiful little oases in the town provide not only a welcoming entrance, but also a cool shady place, where the several layers of plants seem at home. Although none of them indigenous to the area (due to the lack of soil on the island) they grow happily together and have done for years - mainly thanks to the daily irrigation! The plants are there for one reason only, to provide much

needed shade from the sun. The plant life is diverse due to this being the only frost free place in the USA and to me, looks like a scene from my local garden centres houseplant department. Ficus trees and Coconut palms provide shade for less sun loving ferns. All tropical and all enjoying the high humidity (so that’s why the tips of my parlour palm always go brown! As I sit in the garden located at the rear of the oldest house on the island a small lizard drinks from what’s left of a puddle, created by the irrigation system of course. Jamaican style music plays in the background, its origin a local bar I presume, disturbed only by the intermittent and even louder ‘cock-a-doodle-doo’ thanks to the resident cockerel. Set free many years ago as a result of illegal cock fighting, these chirpy chaps roam free here, having found it easy to become native – and I can see why. Lee Bestall

What would the town be like if it lost its ‘high street’ shops; what would Highcliffe be without the shops along lymington Road? Totally Locally is about reminding people of what they have in their town, and that if they want to continue to enjoy these great things they only need to make small changes to make a large difference. Totally Locally Christchurch (TLC) is both a ‘Shop Local’ campaign and a showcase for Christchurch’s independent businesses and shops. It gives residents a reason to shop in Christchurch and reminds them of all the great things that they have and may have forgotten. It changes public perception and alters shopping habits so that locals look to spend money in their local shops instead of just at out of town venues. But TLC is more than asking you to support independent shops. It asks you to get behind all those that trade in the town from the smallest market stall to the supermarkets. It encourages you to spend some of your time and money buying things locally. Okay, we know it is easier to just pop into Sainsbury’s, the parking is easy and they sell so much of what you need, but just remember that for some things there is another alternative. We often hear that our ‘high streets’ are being overrun by national chain stores or charity shops and that town centres are on the decline. Well, take a look around Christchurch & Highcliffe and you can see for yourself the mix and wide variety of shops and businesses of all kinds available to you right on your doorstep. TLC is about working together to lift our whole town; about putting a face to your local business. It is a long-term campaign and one that has successfully changed both the bottom lines of shops and businesses and the way people to choose to shop.
