Fire up the barbie... There’s nothing like the sizzling aroma of food cooked on the barbecue! The key to a good barbie is to keep things simple. The following recipes can be prepared in advance, leaving you free to entertain your guests.

Traditional Beef Burgers (Serves 4) You will need: 500g extra lean minced beef 1 onion peeled and finely chopped 1 garlic clove 4 tbsp of tomato puree 1 tbsp Cajun spice (optional) Method: Mix all the ingredients together to form a ball. Divide the mixture into four and shape into a patty, no deeper than 2cm. Cook on a pre-heated BBQ for approx. 10-15 mins each side until cooked

6

Lamb Skewers You will need: 500g Lamb, trimmed and cut into 1inch cubes For the marinade: 1 tablespoon smoked paprika 1/2 teaspoon ground cumin 2 tsp ground coriander sea salt and freshly ground black pepper olive oil Mix up all the spices in a bowl, and mix with the oil to make a thick marinade paste. Put the lamb pieces into a bowl and cover with the marinade. Let them sit there for half an hour to an hour. Then, spike each piece of meat alternately with red onion and peppers. Grill for around 5 minutes, turning regularly, to give you nicely charred meat on the outside with juicy pink on the inside. Allow to rest for a few minutes – that is, if you can stop yourself eating them straight away!

Chicken Tikka Skewers (Editor’s Fav!) You will need: 1tsp fresh ginger root, finely chopped 1sp fresh garlic, crushed 1/2 tsp ground coriander 1/2 tsp ground cumin 1 tsp chilli powder 3 tbsp yoghurt 1 tsp salt 2 tbsp tomato puree (paste) A few drops of red food colouring (optional) 3lbs chicken breasts chopped into 3cm cubes Method: Mix altogether and marinade in the fridge for 3 hours. Spike each piece of chicken alternately with cherry tomatoes and peppers (optional). Pop onto the BBQ until cooked through then squeeze on extra lemon juice to taste.

Mayor cuts ribbon for more play in Highcliffe

T

he Mayor of Christchurch, Cllr David Flagg cut the ribbon to mark the official opening of the new HIGH5 play park at Highcliffe Recreation Ground.

The new area contains an aerial cableway, an overhead rotator, a climbing zone, a trim trail, a ball court and a shelter. The final design came about following a consultation with children and young people from Highcliffe St. Mark’s Primary School, Highcliffe School and users of the site, as well as local residents. The work has cost £57,000, £40,000 of which has come from a bid made by Christchurch Council for funding from the government’s Playbuilder Project. A further £13,000 has come from a bid by the students of Highcliffe School and Highcliffe Residents Association Community Interest Company (HRACIC) through the Youth Opportunities Fund, while £4,000 came from Dorset County Council’s Youth Service with further funding from Christchurch Youth Council. The opening ceremony was introduced by Christchurch Council’s Head of Planning, Opens Spaces & Countryside, Wayne Barraball, who said: “This is an important new development as outdoor play is an essential part of every child’s life. It keeps them active, healthy and happy and helps them make new friends, learn new skills, improve their self confidence - and above all have fun.”

12 12

The Mayor added: “HIGH5 is the product of strong partnership working within the community and there are many people to thank including Highcliffe Residents Association (CIC), staff and pupils at St. Marks Primary School and Highcliffe School and in particular one pupil, Holly Charlwood, for her passion and dedication.” He also thanked other contributors to the project including Dorset Youth Service, Dorset County Council, Play England, Dorset Police, Bournemouth Football Club, The Landscape Practice and Sutcliffe Play South West. The opening ceremony formed part of a fun day to give children the chance to try out the new equipment and take part in a basketball competition on the new basketball court.

Highcliffe Castle celebrates 15th anniversary exhibition

I

n the late 1980s the prospects for Highcliffe Castle weren’t good. Following two fires the roofless ruin was gradually being overgrown by vegetation and the structure became more unstable with each episode of stormy weather. This instability meant that visitors could only admire the building from the other side of a security fence. In 1989 The Friends of Highcliffe Castle Action Group was formed by local people in order to promote the plight of the Castle. Alongside Christchurch Borough Council and English Heritage, the group worked hard to gain public support for the project and to work towards a future for this magnificent building. With a number of people calling for the Castle’s demolition, this proved to be a long and difficult process. Work started on the repair of the building in 1994 and the first room to be made secure was the Wintergarden. It was then agreed to allow the newly

founded Highcliffe Castle Charitable Trust to run a visitor centre from within this restored room. On the 9th June 1995 this was officially opened and for the first time in two decades the public could gain access to the inside of the building. This summer, Highcliffe Castle will be housing an exhibition, opening on June 10th and running through to September 12th, which will look back on that opening and the 15 years that have seen the Castle rise from the ashes to become the celebrated attraction and community resource that it is today. Featuring videos and digital imagery from Castle archives and from local supporters, the exhibition will really bring to life the story of the last 15 years. For more information on exhibitions and events at Highcliffe Castle, please telephone 01425 278807 or visit www.highcliffecastle.co.uk.

Does this sound like you? Do any of these situations seem familiar? • Do other people seem to mumble rather than speak clearly to you? • Do people often have to repeat things for you before you understand what they say? • Do you have difficulty understanding what is being said in noisy places, such as pubs or restaurants, even though other people manage to have conversations? • Do you find it tiring to listen to conversations because you have to concentrate hard? • Do other people think your television or music is too loud but you cannot hear it properly if they turn it down? • Do you often have difficulty hearing on the telephone? If you experience any of these situations, you may have a hearing loss. Did you know that one in seven people in the UK have some level of hearing loss? That's nine million

16

people – so you're not alone. Teen Column: Hi, my name’s Ben and I live here, in Christchurch.

T

his month has been a good month for my favourite local team, AFC Bournemouth. They have not just had an amazing season, but at the end of it they got promoted to League One. This has been down to two main people; the first one Eddie Howe, being an amazing manager and the second, being Brett Pitman scoring the second most this season, of 26. My grandmother is also very pleased that Bournemouth has been promoted because now she can watch her favourite team play them; Plymouth Argyle. When she was a young girl, she lived in Plymouth and loved watching them play but hasn’t had that opportunity for many years as they have been in a different division to Bournemouth. Now, just in the last few weeks, Bournemouth has signed up Danny Holland on a new contract. The 24year-old scored seven goals in 42 appearances for the Cherries this season, helping them win promotion from League Two. This is a good sign for Bournemouth, as Holland is a key player. Danny Holland is not the only player they have asked to sign a new contract, as they have also asked Steve Fletcher and Alan Connell. Now looking aside from football, my favorite sport is finally back; Athletics. About a week ago, was my Sports Day. I think I did quite well as I came second in the 100m, running it in 12.85 seconds and me and my team won the relay! I also did the 400m but came 5th and the Long Jump and came 4th. One of the reasons why I like athletics and running so much is because it gets me out in the fresh air and it’s even better when the sun is shining! I like athletics more

Ben than some other sports such as football and rugby because for those sports you have to do a lot of practice and training sessions. They take a lot of dedication. I am also set to join Christchurch Rowing Club like my dad because I like rowing on the machines and I thought I’d give it a go in a real boat. I also want to try to learn the right technique as when I do it at school; I get pains in my arms. Dad reckons this is because I am getting the technique wrong. Now that it is close to summer time, my dad, brother and I, are going to our allotment more often. So far my dad is growing potatoes, peppers, carrots, cabbage and some other stuff. My brother is growing runner beans and some potatoes as well and I am growing tomatoes in our garden. Tomatoes are one on my favorite fruits, so that is why I am growing them. I am also now getting really excited because I am getting real close to being able to buy myself an Apple Laptop. I have been saving for one since Christmas. I have been saving for this by doing many jobs such as hoovering around the house, washing up and selling things at car boot sales and on eBay. I really hope this laptop is worth the wait, because I have been saving for what seems absolutely ages! Thank you for reading my column, I hope you enjoyed it.

Christchuch Harbour Watch An introduction

Is your boat moored in the Harbour or do you live on the water’s edge? Then read on!

C

hristchurch Harbour Watch is an active group of local people, representing boat yards, sailing clubs, waterside property groups, the Police, Council and individuals interested in minimising marine crime within the harbour with proactive programs of publicity targeted at groups, such as boat owners vulnerable to property damage or theft. Formed 8 years ago it has successfully introduced property marking at discounted prices, produced leaflets and brochures advising how best to protect property and is currently investigating a low cost security system for enclosed spaces. Additionally, during the summer months, in conjunction with the Police and sailing clubs, security patrols are mounted to protect all property and report any dubious activity. Supported by Christchurch Borough Council, the group relies upon voluntary donations to fund its activities. Probably the most noteworthy case was a

30ft sailing boat being apprehended whilst leaving the harbour by a CHW patrol, unauthorised with the crew saying “he wanted to sail to America”. Instead he discovered the inside of Dorchester prison! The group liase closely with the Borough Council patrol boat operatives who primarily carry out daylight patrols and have assisted in bringing to their attention, craft speeding in the Harbour when they’ve thought they’ve got away with it! (4 knots is the limit). Signage drawing attention to the speed limit is regularly reviewed at the groups’ bi- monthly meetings and where updating or revisions are required; these are drawn to the authorities’ attention. Current projects include, in addition to investigating low cost intruder alarms for house and marine applications; a new brochure for circulation advising on the best protection for removable items and participation with others in ‘road shows’ promoting the association and it’s objectives

A day in the life of a Regent Centre Volunteer by Meryl Jones being paid too much if I couldn’t cope with the work – only not quite as politely as that.

I

t’s going to be quite difficult trying to summarise a day in volunteering at the Regent Centre as each day and each duty can bring a variety of challenges depending upon what your duty is and what is happening within the centre on that day. I am a relative newcomer to volunteering at the Regent only having been here since 2007. Many of the 100+ volunteers have been here for much longer. You don’t really need any specific experience to work here but it helps if you have a willingness to learn, a good sense of humour, good people skills and endless patience. When I first decided to train as a volunteer I had no idea of how easily I would get drawn in to the whole Regent ethos. My first experience was as a coffee bar operative. I was trained by an octogenarian who has been dispensing teas and coffees to the Christchurch public for many years. I then went on to train on the reception desk, box office, front of house, bar and have recently taken on the additional duty and responsibilities of a duty manager.

Many of the people who come here find it difficult to believe that we are unpaid and do the job because we want the Regent to continue. During my box office duty one afternoon, a lady telephoned through to the box office with an enquiry. When I explained that I was unable to help her she stated that I was 26 26

I have made some really good friends whilst working here too. I regularly sign on for front of house duties on a Tuesday evening and I am one of a regular team of seven. The duty manager allocates the duties and then we have about thirty minutes to catch up on the week’s gossip before we begin. On film nights we take responsibility for opening the fire doors, when necessary, checking tickets at the door, showing people to their seats and selling ice cream. The duties are much the same if there is a live show although we may also be required to sell programmes and other merchandising. The first time I was ever asked to show people to their seats I went home wishing I had worn a pedometer. I’m sure I must have walked miles that night! The box office is also an interesting duty to undertake. At first it was just selling tickets for the Regent but in more recent times we have taken on booking seats at other local theatres. These bookings are quite time consuming but there is something very satisfying about seeing people leave the Regent having successfully booked a show at one of these theatres. Not all of the volunteers are seen by the public. Many work behind the scenes on lighting, sound etc and without their input many of the ‘live’ shows wouldn’t happen. As you can see the duties of a volunteer at the Regent Centre are many and varied. Why do we do it? I think it is because we realise that the Regent Centre is a valuable community resource. On market day the coffee bar is full to overflowing and many, although not all, shows are booked up well in advance. It would be a sad day if the Regent ever had to close but with the volunteers doing their best we should be able to keep it going for the foreseeable future. Meryl Jones

The Regent Centre

T

he Regent Centre is situated in the middle of Christchurch High Street and is the cinema, theatre, concert hall, art gallery and entertainment centre serving Christchurch, East Dorset and the New Forest. The Regent opened on Boxing Day 1931 as the town’s cinema, showing The Taming of the Shrew with Mary Pickford and Douglas Fairbanks. The Regent retained this important role in the life of the Community for over forty years until July 1973, when it was closed as a cinema and then re-opened as the Mecca Social and Bingo Club. The final cry of ‘house’ was sounded in February 1982. The need for an arts centre in Christchurch had already been well established in the town and in November 1982, Christchurch Borough Council purchased the Regent. A unique relationship was formed between the local authority and a group of over 100 enthusiastic volunteers. Together, they lovingly restored the Regent to all its early Art Deco glory. The Regent Centre in its present form was finally opened on June 11th 1983 by the actress Dora Bryan. Today, the Regent Centre is one of the finest examples of an early 1930s cinema to survive in Britain. Its 450 seats are regularly filled for events as diverse as the latest film releases to professional touring theatre, jazz, big band, ballet, opera and celebrity star shows. The Regent is also the home venue for many local amateur companies, who regularly stage productions at the Centre. The Regent maintains a rolling programme of development and improvements and on 28th March 2000, a new Studio Theatre was opened, at the rear of the building, jointly funded by the Regent Centre Association and the Council as the Borough’s main Millennium project. During the latter part of 2006, funding was provided by Christchurch Borough Council for a major refurbishment of the Centre. This included the introduction of new seats,

air conditioning, disabled lifts and loos and the Modernist re-design of the Foyer. In February 2007 the final stage of the major refurbishment began with the re-introduction of a canopy over the front doors for the first time since 1967. Two new convex poster boards on the two supporting pillars at either side of the canopy combined with 1930s neon style signage, have tastefully re-created the early Art Deco heritage of the Regent. Since 2008 the Regent has been able to use new technology to bring in satellite broadcasts of major artistic events from around the world to the Centre’s big screen. The Metropolitan Opera has been broadcast live from New York to sell out houses at the Regent. Then in 2009 the National Theatre began broadcasts from its stage live from London’s South Bank to enthusiastic audiences at the Regent. Amongst the many exciting developments currently under consideration by the Board and Management of the Regent are the future introduction of Digital Cinema with a 3D facility, which will keep this 80 year old cinema at the cutting edge of technological advances in the film industry. The mutually beneficial relationship between Christchurch Borough Council and the Regent (Christchurch) Ltd, the charity set up to maintain the day to day running of the Centre with the volunteers, has prospered over the years to such an extent, that it is often held up as a shining example for others to follow. Today, the Regent Centre remains the heart of entertainment in Christchurch.
