Local History by Len Wigg Some enterprising Christchurch Women in the 19th century. Christchurch Priory was extended progressively over the centuries down to its dissolution in 1539/40 using large teams of builders, but routine maintenance work was given to local tradesmen. The churchwarden’s accounts show this and extracts from the earliest copies have been transcribed by Herbert Druitt and printed in Christchurch Miscellany, a copy being in the High Street Library. The 19th century has some interesting entries, of which the following are a selection. In 1816-9 Susanna Belbin, the widow of James who had died in 1815, was paid for 2 bills. Presumably for bricks and maybe bricklaying, since in the church rate book she was charged for a brick kiln in Winkton. Later her son was paid for bricklaying at the Priory. In 1819 Elizabeth Long was paid nearly £3 for unspecified work. This was when the ceiling had been constructed in the nave. There is a gap in the records but Elizabeth appeared again in 1832/3, now `& Son’ and was paid £51. The following year Robert Long was paid for `repairing church windows’ and also for windows at Bransgore church. The most interesting woman builder was Mary Holloway because there is more information about her. She was born Mary Joy in 1801 and married George Holloway in 1818. He had a house and workshop in Bridge Street and from 1818 he did various repairs at the church, mainly laying lead sheet for roofing, glazing windows and painting. In the 1840s he diversified into boat building. He died in 1854; in March/April 1855 there was the first payment to `Mrs Holloway’s account’.

Then every year until 1874 there were payments to her for the same kinds of repairs. In the 1851 census she was described as `Wife’ with 6 children, the youngest, Mary, being 5 years old. Ten years later she was `Head of the household’ and described as `plumber, painter and glazer’ with her son as `conductor of business’ employing 8 men. In the Post Office Directory 1867 she was `plumber etc.’ The 1871 census described her as a painter and her son Robert was manager. What makes her particularly interesting is that many of her handwritten invoices and bills have survived in the Priory archives. Part of one is illustrated below. Two of her daughters became teachers and in 1911 commissioned a stained glass window to commemorate their parents. It is the one showing 3 Old Testament prophets and John the Baptist, at the west end of the North Quire aisle. It is appropriate that this Victorian businesswoman has such a visible memorial. When you find the window, you may look on the floor and see the tombstone for `Elizabeth the wife of Richard Holloway died August 29th 1691’, which was three years before he was made a town Burgess. So members of the extended Holloway family have lived here for more than three centuries and many have maintained the Priory; Holloway (Electrical) for instance, rewired and fitted new lights in 1989-91.

Adopt a Pet CAN YOU GIVE BAZ A LOVING HOME? LOOKING FOR A FOREVER HOME

I have had a lot of changes in my life and need someone to be with me most of the time, I am a very intelligent boy and have a nice nature and will happily live with another dog as I get on well with humans and dogs alike.

HIGHCLIFFE SCHOOL’S CHARITY MILESTONE

Highcliffe School is immensely proud of the tireless commitment that our students, staff and parents show in raising money for good causes. Charity events can range from activities that involve the whole school, such as the Big Walk, which raises thousands of pounds, be the focus of many year group activities, or be organised by small groups and individuals, such as sponsored silences and cake sales. Over time, even the smallest contributions can add up to a surprising amount. This was the case recently, when Highcliffe School was contacted by Julia’s House to inform us that over the last ten years, Highcliffe has raised a superb £10,000 for them. Julia’s House is Dorset’s only hospice dedicated to children with life-limiting conditions and is a regular charity focus across the school. To celebrate this achievement, representatives from Julia’s House are visiting the School on a number of different days to deliver assemblies to every year group, explaining the work that they do and passing on their thanks to all the pupils for their hard work and support. In a recent visit, Laura Kelly, Community Fundraiser met with Headteacher, Patrick Earnshaw and members of the School Council to do just this. Laura said, “We at Julia’s House would like to thank the staff and students of Highcliffe School for their generosity. We are immensely grateful that the school have continually supported us over the years and have been delighted to deliver assemblies to every year group. Highcliffe School has raised an incredible £10,000 which will pay for more than 330 hours of care. Our respite care means so much to parents who are looking after a very sick child 24 hours a day. It gives them time out with their partners, their other children or simply a chance to catch up with some day-to-day tasks, safe in the knowledge their child is being looked after by people they know and trust. Thank you so much Highcliffe School, your support really will make a difference”. Julia’s House will continue to be a key charity focus for Highcliffe School. All money raised will help Julia’s House continue to maximise and enrich the life quality of Dorset-based children and young people with life-limiting or life-threatening conditions and support their families and loved ones. Look out for our next fund raising efforts and please do what you can to support this very worthwhile cause!

Highcliffe-on-Sea Traders Association

March, hoorah! Spring is upon us, the lighter evenings will be here shortly and we can all start promenading again along our beautiful seafront.

Helen

I finally took the plunge and signed up for personal training sessions at Society 23, they’ve been amazing and although I’ve discovered muscles I never knew I had I am loving every minute of the getting fit thing in a really friendly, encouraging environment. I’m even planning on joining the early morning bootcamps starting in April down on the seafront! We were all sad and shocked to see the Scullery close but hopefully someone enterprising will take it on and restore it to the bustling place it should be in the centre of the Village, it really is in a great spot in a beautiful building. The Food Festival is to be held on Saturday 21st May this year and much planning and organising is underway. There promises to be many food stalls and entertainment all the way along the High Street again. It was great fun and wonderful to see such a throng of activity along the street. Valentine Warner is here again demonstrating, I was naughty and sneaky enough to get to try some of his trout tempura which was absolutely mouth-watering. I will be sat in the front row smiling sweetly and being a slightly sad groupie looking for some scraps. Our new and improved Post Office will be opening shortly in the old Lumen8 building, be sure to pop in and show your support as having our own thriving Post Office that offers all the main services plus banking is pretty lucky these days. Also should you want to check out what activities are on locally the Greystones Community Centre has a great new website, www. highcliffeca.co.uk. There are so many clubs and groups, pretty much every hobby is catered for just down the road. Anyway, I wish you all a Happy Springtime.

Business Column

A plan that will result in the death of Christchurch Borough council is fast gathering pace.

The controversial proposal is for there to be a merger Peter of the authorities in Poole, Bournemouth, Christchurch and East Dorset. This would turn Christchurch from one of the smallest councils in the country to a bit player in what would be the 6th largest. Lack of funding is the driving force. Government subsidies for local councils reduce every year and will soon disappear altogether. It is therefore imperative that costs are cut. The argument is that combining the councils would enable services to be streamlined and savings made.

Those in favour say that if you were starting with a blank sheet, the current situation of separate unitary authorities in Poole and Bournemouth surrounded by a series of Borough Councils overseen by the Dorset County Council would be ridiculous. They argue the business case for rationalisation is overwhelming. Those against will point to the historic nature of Christchurch and how we have bravely fought off such proposals in the past. The view is that the unique nature of the town is enhanced by our local governance. It enables decisions about our future to be made locally by representatives answerable locally.

Interestingly, one saving recently announced would be a reduction in councillors by a third. Unlikely to be popular with the Councillors themselves, but one suspects a cull of politicians may be seen as one positive point by the public at large! At present the debate has mainly been behind closed doors and the idea is still at the stage of ‘feasibility studies’ being undertaken. There are powerful voices, however, pushing the idea and a sense that reorganisation is inevitable. Whether it will appeal to the public and attract their support is yet to be seen.

Christchurch Blue Plaques by Stephen Roberts No. 14 - “Just poppin’ out for a pint dear!”

As a teetotaller I find alcohol one of life’s more baffling conundrums. Its popularity is hard to fathom when you throw in hangovers, calories, health issues and a car that has to remain garaged. He ho. Of course, it wasn’t always so clear-cut. There was a time when beer was safer to drink than water. That familiar refrain, “Just poppin’ out for a quick pint dear!” might have been welcomed by the other-half and even encouraged. Perhaps this goes some way to explaining why Christchurch had as many as half-a-dozen breweries by the mid-19th-century and why one of the main exports from Town Quay was beer.

Our next blue plaque (16 on the map) is ‘Bow House’, an 18th-century brewer’s house in the High Street, once part of an extensive complex (Christchurch Brewery, established 1723), including a fine brewery tower, which sat mostly behind, where the current Bank Close (M&S) car park resides. The story goes that vaulted brick cellars were accessible from Bow House, a throwback to those smuggling days, quite an extensive warren by all accounts. Brewing relics proliferate if you know where to look. ‘The Old Brewhouse’ in Quay Road was a small brewery, the pub it supplied being ‘Ye Olde Eight Bells’, in Church Street, which is, of course, a gift shop today. Here is a nice story. With seven bells ringing at the Priory, the pub was the eighth bell, a bit like the 19th hole of a golf course. Wealthy brewer John Cook once

18 • Highcliffe Eye • March 2016

lived in a grand house (‘Square House’) where today’s ‘Arcado Lounge’ is; his brewery was behind. In Stanpit can be found leftovers of onetime ‘Avon Brewery’ (a pair of semidetached cottages, ‘Loders’ and ‘Amberley’).

Stephen

Another thriving industry in Victorian times was the popular activity of stuffing animals (taxidermy), which seems to have been big business hereabouts. The Victorians could be a funny lot. The plaque on ‘Bow House’ tells us, that ‘Hart’s Museum’, a famous collection of thousands of stuffed birds and animals, moved here in the early part of the 20th century. ‘Bow House’, then, represents a nifty juxtaposition of two important pieces of Christchurch’s past. The rest of the brewery complex had been demolished by the 1970s, making way for the car park. This is a part of Christchurch that has changed quite a bit. Next to ‘Bow House’ was once a garage (‘Keith Motors’). This is where M&S is today.

Today, the water is safe, but the alcohol? Perhaps I’ll stick to a nice pot of tea or an Americano with some hot milk. We may not have the breweries today, or the stuffed animals for that matter, but we do have plenty of lovely tearooms. Next time: Convent Walk

Christmas Carol Concert The annual Christmas carol concert, organised by the Highcliiffe Rotary Club, was held in St Marks Susan Church on Wednesday 9th December, which, as usual, was filled to capacity. The Winton Salvation Army Band gave their usual delightful renditions of carols and other seasonal music which everyone enjoyed. The collection in aid of the Salvation Army Winton raised some £350 and we are already looking forward to next year’s concert! Make a note for Wednesday 14th December 2016. Charity Quiz Night Highcliffe Rotary Club recently held their Annual Charity Quiz on Saturday 16th of January at Bashley Village Hall. Quizmaster Rtn. John Nicholls spent considerable time compiling eight challenging rounds of thought provoking questions, enjoyed by over 120 people, making up 16 teams of keen quizzers, including Highcliffe, New Milton and Lymington Rotary members, their families and friends. After a hard-fought four rounds everyone welcomed a break and a chance to charge their glasses and enjoyed a satisfying repast of fish and chips to fuel the enthusiasm for the second half of the quiz. President elect Julian Hayley’s team were the eventual victors and grateful thanks were extended to all concerned for a fantastic evening of fun and fellowship. Once the Raffle was drawn, and prizes were claimed, clearing up was done and dusted, members of Highcliffe Rotary were pleased to announce that just over £1,300 had been raised towards their charity funds. Christchurch is celebrating its third year as a Fairtrade Borough during Fairtrade Fortnight, which runs from 29th February until 13th March.

You will find Fairtrade events at Waitrose on the 27th February, Somerford ARC on the 2nd March, the Co-operative on the 5th March, the Mayors Parlour on the 12th March, in the Bay Tree Health shop, the library, Burton church, St Lukes church, Age Concern Friendship clubs and at least four local schools, two of which have been awarded FairAware certificates. Well done, Mudeford and Christchurch juniors!

Fairtrade Fortnight 2016 will feature a giant Fairtrade breakfast to inspire UK public to sit down for breakfast in support of the farmers who grow the food we have every morning, such as coffee, tea, cocoa and bananas. So please stock up with Fairtrade products and have a Fairtrade breakfast (or two!) to support this year’s theme which is ‘Sit down for breakfast. Stand up for farmers’. Sadly, millions of people in poorer countries who grow our food don’t earn enough to feed and educate themselves and their families. We can change this!

The Fairtrade Foundation would like to total the number of Fairtrade breakfasts to show the government and businesses how much support there is for Fairtrade. In Christchurch we are hoping to register over 2000 breakfasts. Leaflets will be available in the library and other town centre outlets, no personal details are required to register your breakfast. Or why not Tweet a photo of your breakfast to @ch_fairtrade and the best local photo will win a bottle of vodka, kindly donated by Stanpit wines.

Teen Column Hi Everyone,

I hope you all had a lovely February. I have been further Emily planning my 18th birthday and have even discovered I am spending it in Paris! I have already started packing lots of thermals as it looks like the weather will be even colder than in England. It’s also meant to be raining lots so I’ve made sure to pack a raincoat! Also this month I have finally bought a car. It is a Nissan Micra, which is very easy to drive; I am so excited to go and pick it up in a couple of weeks and finally start practicing outside of my lessons. I have passed my theory test and I’ve already booked my practical one, I can’t wait! I’m now trying to sort out the insurance, which is taking a long time. There are so many different companies and options that it all becomes very complicated. I’m sure it will all be worthwhile once I’m on the road. I enjoyed a delicious lunch at The Rising Sun in Purewell last week. The two-course lunchtime menu is only £9.95 and the food is so fresh and delicious. The starter and main were lovely and the chef even adapted the menu to suit my Mum who is a vegetarian. This is good news for me as she might treat me again! Later this year when the weather is nicer, I am looking forward to starting Paddle Boarding in Christchurch Quay. I’ve never tried it before so I am excited to attempt a new sport. Apparently it’s very easy to learn and is a good work out. Let’s hope I have a good sense of balance! I’ll let you know how I get on in Paris in the next magazine, have a nice March x

Is your conservatory too hot in summer and too cold in winter? Comfort Rooms has the affordable solution that can transform your conservatory into a room you can use much more often, and it really works! Spring is in the air, which hopefully means the weather is warming up. Why not get your conservatory ready for the warmer weather by installing a Comfort Room insulated ceiling? A Comfort Room ceiling will not only help keep your conservatory cooler in summer, but it will also keep it warmer in winter. Transforming your conservatory into a room that your can use and enjoy much more often. The glass or polycarbonate roof of a conservatory offers no protection from the suns heat, so the temperature inside can often reach unbearable heights. And, in the winter, any heat in the conservatory is lost through the roof. By Installing a Comfort Room ceiling your conservatory will be turned into a more usable room, making it the extra space, it was always supposed to be. To transform your conservatory inside and out, Comfort Rooms also offers the

option of the SupaLite tiled conservatory replacement roof. This option not only gives you the plaster finish interior of a Comfort Room, but the lightweight tiles give your conservatory the external look of an extension. Both conservatory transformation options cause minimal disruption. A Comfort Room can be installed in 2 to 3 days and a SupaLite roof in 3 to 5 so unlike larger building jobs you will benefit from the extra space sooner and with less expense too. Call us to find out more or visit our website comfortroomsltd.com to find out how we can transform your conservatory. Comfort Rooms does not operate a high pressure sales policy. • Reduction in sun glare & rain noise; • Energy saving & only 5% VAT; • Installed in 2 to 5 days.

HOW DOES YOUR GARDEN GROW? LOVELY LILIES (AND A SPOT OF HARD-PRUNING)

The first day of spring this year is officially March 20th. Trees are blossoming and daffodils are in bloom. The garden has woken up from its winter sleep and is full of promise. But promise is not enough. A beautiful garden does not happen by chance. So what are the top jobs for March gardeners?

Pruning features large! Hard-prune those late flowering shrubs like Buddleia, Leycesteria and Lavateria, but only if the risk of heavy frost is past. Spring-flowering plants such as Forsythia and Winter Honeysuckle should be pruned immediately the flowers fade.

If you haven’t already pruned your bush roses, now is the time. Leave about an inch of last year’s growth to encourage bushiness and lots of flowers. Shrub roses don’t need such radical treatment but would benefit from losing a third of their old, thick, woody stems. Lift congested clumps of snowdrops while they still have leaves showing. Finally, stay on top of the weeds. If you leave them, weeding quickly becomes an insurmountable chore.

Ok, we’ve dispensed with the hard work, now it’s time to look ahead. I have one word for you ... Lilies.

I always thought they were tricky to grow, and so they proved, mainly because my garden doubles as a slug sanctuary!

Then I had an epiphany. It dawned on me that if I grew them in pots, slug prevention would 34 • Highcliffe Eye • March 2016

be easier, plus I didn’t run the risk of slicing through the fat, scaly bulbs or tender shoots with my hoe while enthusiastically weeding my plot. Even better, it means you can grow them even if you only have a balcony.

There are loads of varieties in the garden centres right now. Three bulbs fit nicely into an 8 inch (20cm) pot and five fit into a ten inch (25cm) pot. I’ve found terracotta pots best because they provide enough weight to prevent these tall plants tipping over. Lilies need an open planting mixture which drains well so I use a mixture of potting compost plus a soil-less multi-purpose compost. The bulb tips should be a couple of inches below the compost. Keep in a sheltered spot and water when the surface of the compost looks dry. Once the buds have formed, feed weekly with dilute tomato food until late summer. When the blooms fade, cut the stems down and place in a sheltered spot. Each spring, scrape away a couple of inches of compost and add fresh mixture, then repeat the instructions above. Treated like this your lilies will reward you for three or four years before they need re-potting.

There are a plethora of colours and scents available, so there is a lily for everyone. Try them. I guarantee you’ll be as in love with lilies as I am.

The Brockenhurst Guide

Soft- boiled duck egg with bacon asparagus soldiers Boiled egg and soldiers goes grown up, with pancetta and asparagus sourdough fingers and creamy duck eggs.

INGREDIENTS

8 asparagus spears (about 300g), woody ends discarded 4 long thin slices rustic bread (preferably sourdough) 8 rashers smoked streaky bacon or pancetta 4 duck eggs

METHOD

Heat your grill to high. Snap off the woody ends of the asparagus spears and discard. Cut the bread into 12 soldiers, a little shorter than the asparagus. Place a spear onto each soldier and wrap tightly with a rasher of bacon. Place on a baking tray, season and grill for 15 mins or until the bacon is crisp. Bring a pan of salted water to the boil and simmer the duck eggs for about 7 mins, to get a runny yolk and a cooked white. Serve immediately with the warm soldiers for dipping.

Mum’s the Word My toddler is currently infatuated with eggs, the chicken, chocolate or toy kind, so it’s rather apt that it’s Easter this month and I can shower her in eggs.

With Christchurch Information Centre

Natasha

I have also been on the look out for some fun activities to feed her egg infatuation. I came across an awesome (messy) craft which is probably a good one for the garden - ‘Painting Eggs’. The idea is to save your egg shells as you use/eat them, as whole as possible with a small opening at one end, wash them out and fill with coloured paints, then take tissue paper, glue it over the hole to seal them, then the fun part, the children get to launch them at a large canvas and watch them explode into a work of art! I told you it might be one for outside! I also came across a rather more edible activity, baking Cadbury’s Cream Egg cupcakes. It’s as simple as it sounds, a basic cake mix with a Creme Egg in the middle, apparently they are so rich it’s not worth adding any sort of icing. Now that’s my kind of cake. This month we celebrate all the Mothers on 6th. Everyone’s idea of celebrating is different; be it a walk along Christchurch quay, a meal at one of our local independent eateries or simply a bath in peace. If you’re looking to celebrate with something different for your mum, a sure to be beautiful performance from Bournemouth Bach Choir of Monteverdi “Vespers of 1610” is happening on 19th March at the Christchurch Priory 7.30pm. Tickets are £10-£17 and available from The Regent Centre. Having attended events there myself, I can say it really makes for a wonderful evening out.
