Welcome.... It’s Mothering Sunday on the 6th of this month so why not treat your mum to breakfast in bed and try out our recipe of soft-boiled duck egg with bacon asparagus soldiers? You can find it on page 29. It’s always a bit tricky trying to think of new and exciting ideas to impress the ladies I know, but we’ve lots of great card and gift shops here in Southbourne. If you’d like to buy her a gift then please try and shop locally where you can so as to support the local economy. If you don’t fancy rustling something up in the kitchen yourself then perhaps spoil mum and take her out to one of the many fabulous places we have here in Southbourne. The Cliff House Hotel offers a Three Course Lunch, Afternoon Tea or even a private dining area this Mother’s Day. Call them on 01202 424701 to make a reservation but be quick, they are sure to book up fast! Or what about Pierre’s Patisserie for coffee and cake? Is your mum a craft lady? Then you could take her for a Crafternoon Cream Tea at Craft corner (page 21). Or why not treat her to a new hair do at Head of Hair (page 10) or Hairworx (page 12)? Whatever you decide to do I hope all the mummies out there have a lovely day.

LOCAL BUSINESSMAN TURNS BOXER TO HELP RAISE MONEY FOR CANCER RESEARCH UK
Local Eye Magazine is sponsoring local Businessman Malcolm Whitham from Southborne to help raise money for Cancer Research UK.
“The reason why I have decided to take part in this fantastic event is over the last seven years, my family have been affected by cancer in so many different ways. I have done many 10k runs in aid of charity but I have never done anything as hard as this before. Over the last four months I have been making a lot of sacrifices and training really hard. But this is nothing compared to what people have to face day in and day out who live with cancer.”
Boxing events held across the country, which are helping to knock out cancer, have smashed a £3Million fundraising milestone for Cancer Research UK. Ultra White Collar Boxing gives people with no boxing experience the opportunity to train as a boxer in a safe and enjoyable environment, while raising money for charity. Participants receive eight weeks of completely free training with professional boxing coaches, providing they raise money for Ultra White Collar Boxing’s charity of choice Cancer Research UK. At the end of the training they get to put their skills to the test and take part in a boxing match in front of hundreds of supporters at a gala black tie event with Malcolm’s big night being held on Saturday 19th March at the Bournemouth International Centre. Bouts are contested over 3 rounds of 2 minutes with 1 minute intervals. How can you help? You can either sponsor Malcolm by visiting his sponsorship page https://www.justgiving.com/Malcolm-Whitham1/ or if you want to purchase tickets for this event please contact Malcolm on 07713 462853 or by visiting www.uwcb.co.uk and lets eradicate cancer for ever!

It’s now the time of year where families will be going out and about so I’m going to write about ‘lost children’.
Think shutters are all the same? Bill
Although I am referring to the beach and children a lot of this can apply anywhere to anyone. So what can you do to reduce the risk? Firstly, you should plan for the potential ‘loss’. Arrange a place where you will meet if you are separated. Make sure it’s unique and also make sure it’s visible from a child’s eye view and that the child has seen it. Make a note of what your child is wearing, why not take a photo with your phone so you can show people exactly what you are looking for? If you have your phone on you why not write the number on the child’s hand so when they are found you can be contacted?
Now we get to the scary part. Your child goes missing. In the words of Corporal Jones ‘don’t panic’. Have a quick look around your area and if you can’t see them go to the lifeguard (or person in authority) and report them missing as soon as possible. On the beach we can then pass on the description to the nearest stations and reduce the search area. A good phrase to remember is that a child isn’t lost until they know they are lost. They can often be happy having met another child and be building sand castles unaware of the search around them. Once they realise they are lost they will act differently and be spotted. Keep in contact with the lifeguard and all of your search group, we don’t want to have to look for an adult after we have found the child. If someone else finds the child report it to the lifeguards in order to stop the search. The lifeguards have a protocol for lost children and will inform the other emergency services if necessary.

Shop windows begin their transformations into spring and it can be a good time to bag a bargain as stores reduce winter ware to make room for spring stock.
Southbourne road improvements are now nearing the end, freeing the flow of traffic. Plenty of parking is available in our public carpark (Woodside Road) and a great tip is to download the Phone & Pay app which allows you to purchase your parking ticket via your smart phone or just a quick phone call. No more rushing back to top up the ticket machine. Bournemouth’s homeless reached the streets of Southbourne and were causing concerns within the community. You can help homeless people by: • Fundraising and donating the money to recognised homelessness charities. • Reporting anyone you see sleeping outside to Streetlink. • Volunteering with a local homelessness charity. You can also offer help in the form of information about soup kitchens and homeless help which can be found in the following places; St Andrews Church in Bournemouth - Tuesday and Thursday Evenings St Albans Church in Charminster - Saturday Evening
Lastly I would like to offer congratulations to our highly successful Southbourne semi finalists in the Bournemouth Tourism Awards which went to Quarters Kitchen & Bar for ‘Family Eating Out Experience’; The White Bear for ‘Bournemouth’s Best Night Out’ sponsored by Heineken; The Cliff House Hotel for ‘Small Hotel Award’ and The Larder House for ‘Specialist Dining Experience, Southbourne on Sea Trading Association (SoSBA) for the Wheels Comes to Southbourne event for “Great Time Out” & Tim Seward of The Cliff House Hotel for “The Unsung Hero”. We really have a great deal to shout about and would like to thanks all the above for contributing to making Southbourne a truly vibrant and energised place of be.

COCKTAIL TALES AT THE KINGS ARMS
We were invited to The Bar at the award-winning Kings Arms Christchurch, to attend their Cocktail Masterclass and received a warm welcome from Pav, the Bar Manager. He proceeded to treat us to an informative and entertaining evening and introduced us to a wide-variety of cocktails.
The Kings Arms always strive to use local suppliers for their food in their restaurant, so we were pleased to see that this is continued in The Bar with the 15 Mile Cocktail Menu. Our evening started with us sampling the ‘Britini’ which is made using Chase Gin and English Oak sparkling wine from a local vineyard in Poole. I’m not normally a gin lover but I have been converted to this light and refreshing drink. The Kings Arms offers a wide range of vodkas, our favourite being the Dorset Black Cow. This was used in the the delicious ‘Once Upon a Cosmo’ with cranberry juice and The Kings Arms’ very own home made citrus sour; surely three of our Five a Day? Local Conker Gin was combined with Dorset Tea to produce the fresh and zingy ‘Hengistbury Head Iced Tea.’ Although we had a non-tea drinker amongst us, this cocktail was quickly devoured! We felt that this would be a delightful alternative to our normal summertime Pimms. The Editor’s choice has to be ‘King Storm’, a Bacardi based cocktail with the succulent taste of fresh raspberries and raspberry liqueur. This is something I would not normally have chosen but the evening gave us a chance to sample and experience new tastes.
Pav’s enthusiasm and his endless knowledge of his work led to a fascinating and highly enjoyable evening for us. His warm manner and ease behind the bar helped us to relax and ask endless questions which he answered with confidence as he unveiled stories behind every cocktail that he made, all of which we were happy to sample! Overall it was an unforgettable experience which we would highly recommend to groups of friends wanting just a little bit more from a night out in Christchurch. For more information and to book your own Cocktail Masterclass, please call The Kings on 01202 588933. End. In Box: Happy Hour Great gin and all cocktails for only £5 5-7pm 9-10.30pm 7 days a week

Local History by Hattie Miles - Frederick E. Smith walkingtalks.wordpress.com
The founding of Southbourne-on-Sea The Southbourne we know is less than 150 years old. It’s hard to imagine when you see the density of the housing and the busy shoppers in the Grove that until the 1870s Southbourne didn’t exist. It was the creation of a young doctor, Thomas Armetriding Compton, who had set up in general practice in Old Christchurch Road, Bournemouth in 1864. Though there were a few properties already here, such as Stourfield House (built c1766), the majority of the Southbourne area at that time was heathland and farmland, with piggeries, fruit trees and grazing sheep. The area was part of the Manor of Christchurch until 1698, when the Lord of the Manor, Henry Hyde 2nd Earl of Clarendon, was forced to sell off parts of it to pay the debts of his profligate son, Viscount Cornbury, to help cover-up his scandalous life-style (he was an alcoholic and transvestite). Incidentally, from 1701 to 1708 Cornbury was the Governor of New York and New Jersey, but the roll was dogged by scandal and drama. Eventually in 1707, there were formal requests for his removal from office when he attended his wife’s funeral dressed as a woman. Now back to Southbourne! Doctor Compton, who was keen on the health-giving sea-breezes and better than average sunshine of the area, bought a strip of seafront land in 1870 and the following year, acquired more acreage up the cliff (at this time pig sties, not houses, were the main feature). Then in 1874 he invested in the building of Belle View Road and Compton became the principle shareholder of the Southbourne-on-Sea Freehold Land Company, which was founded in 1882. This was the
company that started the major development of shopping and early residential roads. They even built a Hattie pier in 1888 from which you could take boat trips to Bournemouth. Compton wanted Southbourne to rival its bigger neighbour, which was already thriving as a spa and tourist resort. Sadly in the winter of 1900/1901 storms badly damaged the pier and as there was no money for repairs and no buyer could be found, in 1909 it was demolished for safety reasons. There’s a nice description of Southbourne in the 1888 Bright’s Guide to Bournemouth:
“some fifteen years ago it had neither a name nor a road, much less a house. It now possesses a handsome Church, a large Hotel, a Winter Garden, numerous private residences and lodginghouses, shops, Post and Telegraph Offices …….. a magnificent Undercliff Esplanade and Sea Wall, to which a well designed iron Pier of about 300 feet is now being attached. ……… It’s climate is remarkably healthy, the air pure and bracing, the temperature equable, cool in summer and mild in winter whilst the rainfall is very moderate”.

TUCKTONIA: 3 - THE ROAD TO TUCKTONIA Written by Alexander McKinstry
The Tuckton Golf Course offered a cordial welcome to anyone visiting Christchurch in the 1950s. Its proprietor was Arthur Vine, who, in 1959, entered into partnership with Harry Stiller, a young sports enthusiast who had arrived in Bournemouth the previous year, and who spent his first few months in the district selling washing machines. Greater enterprises beckoned, and when Arthur became seriously ill in 1961 Harry ended up buying the freehold to the golf course for £18,000, ‘lock, stock and barrel’. One of his first moves was to convert the site café into a free house, The Golfers’ Arms, which acquired a seasonal drinks licence in 1962 – making Harry, at twenty-three, one of the youngest licensees in the country. This was extended to an all-yearround licence in 1963, though the golf course itself remained closed between October and April, on the grounds that it flooded every winter. Harry built up a nice little business here, renowned for its pleasant location, the well-tended fairways – when not in flood – and, crucially, the fact that the Golfers’ would have sixteen draught ales on at any one time. ‘It used to be our boast,’ says Harry today, ‘that if you were a holidaymaker, we would have your beer. I used to have Tetley’s, Newcastle Brown, Ushers, Flower’s Bitter, Watney’s, Charrington, Double Diamond – I had every type of booze you could think of.’ In later years, when the Golfers’ was leased to Watney’s and became a tied pub, the takings plummeted, partly because the brewery slung out all the beers: ‘I think they had one guest ale.’ 22 advertise • Southbourne • 01202 March477214 2016 To pleaseEye call
That lay in the future, however, and in 1965 the site was enlivened by the addition of a discothèque, Barbarella’s – though this only ran for two years, partly because mini-skirted hedonists kept infiltrating the Golfers’ next-door. ‘The police had a few words in my shell-like ear about the underage drinking that was going on,’ Harry recalls, ‘so in the end, the pub was getting busier and busier and I thought, you know what, I’ve had the best out of this discothèque, it’s been a very good thing, but I need the space for the pub and I don’t need all this aggro.’ Barbarella’s closed, and Harry used the space to create a new bar – The Raceway – distinguished by the Formula 3 racing car built into the outside wall. The Raceway was a nod to Harry’s own Formula 3 career, which was then taking up most of his time. Consequently the late Ken James, who had started as a cellar-man at the Golfers’ in 1964, was appointed site manager and became Harry’s right-hand man (‘an absolutely super bloke’) in the years that followed. A turning-point came at the end of the decade, when Harry retired from Formula 3 after two successive accidents test-driving tyres. From then on, the Tuckton site became the focus of his energies. ‘I wanted to transform it into something everyone could appreciate, something along the lines of Tower Park,’ recalls Harry of this period. The Golfers’ was assigned to Watney’s, on a 99-year lease, to help fund various new attractions. These included a public swimming pool (the first in Christchurch), a safari ride, a 35-ft. giant slide, crazy golf, and a £24,000 go-kart track, run like a mini-Indianapolis.The karts were powered by 170-cc Honda engines, capable of 23 mph; there was no lower age limit, so long as the driver’s foot was capable of reaching the brake pedal. The Tuckton Golf and Leisure Park, as it was henceforth known, opened on 28 May 1972 and was a success from the outset: police were called, on opening day, when visitors began parking their cars on Tuckton Bridge, and most of the site’s 425 parking spaces were filled throughout the summers that ensued. A further development, however, was gestating around this time. ‘I remember thinking,’ says Harry, ‘the Stour Road
site had worked out well, and was self-funding, but I was still seeking a special ingredient to really catapult the site to attention.’ It happened that Harry was good friends with the Bournemouth businessman John Yates, who opened the Maison Royale nightclub in Glen Fern Road in 1971; the two men used to meet for weekly brainstorming sessions. It was John who suggested a trip to the Madurodam model landscape in The Hague, with its 1:25 models of windmills, tulip fields and various Dutch landmarks. Intrigued, Harry paid a visit – ‘and the moment I set foot there,’ he says, ‘I knew this was exactly the sort of thing I wanted to bring to Christchurch.’

HOW DOES YOUR GARDEN GROW? LOVELY LILIES (AND A SPOT OF HARD-PRUNING)
The first day of spring this year is officially March 20th. Trees are blossoming and daffodils are in bloom. The garden has woken up from its winter sleep and is full of promise. But promise is not enough. A beautiful garden does not happen by chance. So what are the top jobs for March gardeners?
Pruning features large! Hard-prune those late flowering shrubs like Buddleia, Leycesteria and Lavateria, but only if the risk of heavy frost is past. Spring-flowering plants such as Forsythia and Winter Honeysuckle should be pruned immediately the flowers fade.
If you haven’t already pruned your bush roses, now is the time. Leave about an inch of last year’s growth to encourage bushiness and lots of flowers. Shrub roses don’t need such radical treatment but would benefit from losing a third of their old, thick, woody stems. Lift congested clumps of snowdrops while they still have leaves showing. Finally, stay on top of the weeds. If you leave them, weeding quickly becomes an insurmountable chore.
Ok, we’ve dispensed with the hard work, now it’s time to look ahead. I have one word for you ... Lilies.
I always thought they were tricky to grow, and so they proved, mainly because my garden doubles as a slug sanctuary!
Then I had an epiphany. It dawned on me that if I grew them in pots, slug prevention would 26 • Southbourne Eye • March 2016
be easier, plus I didn’t run the risk of slicing through the fat, scaly bulbs or tender shoots with my hoe while enthusiastically weeding my plot. Even better, it means you can grow them even if you only have a balcony.
There are loads of varieties in the garden centres right now. Three bulbs fit nicely into an 8 inch (20cm) pot and five fit into a ten inch (25cm) pot. I’ve found terracotta pots best because they provide enough weight to prevent these tall plants tipping over. Lilies need an open planting mixture which drains well so I use a mixture of potting compost plus a soil-less multi-purpose compost. The bulb tips should be a couple of inches below the compost. Keep in a sheltered spot and water when the surface of the compost looks dry. Once the buds have formed, feed weekly with dilute tomato food until late summer. When the blooms fade, cut the stems down and place in a sheltered spot. Each spring, scrape away a couple of inches of compost and add fresh mixture, then repeat the instructions above. Treated like this your lilies will reward you for three or four years before they need re-potting.
There are a plethora of colours and scents available, so there is a lily for everyone. Try them. I guarantee you’ll be as in love with lilies as I am.

Soft- boiled duck egg with bacon asparagus soldiers Boiled egg and soldiers goes grown up, with pancetta and asparagus sourdough fingers and creamy duck eggs.
INGREDIENTS
8 asparagus spears (about 300g), woody ends discarded 4 long thin slices rustic bread (preferably sourdough) 8 rashers smoked streaky bacon or pancetta 4 duck eggs
METHOD
Heat your grill to high. Snap off the woody ends of the asparagus spears and discard. Cut the bread into 12 soldiers, a little shorter than the asparagus. Place a spear onto each soldier and wrap tightly with a rasher of bacon. Place on a baking tray, season and grill for 15 mins or until the bacon is crisp. Bring a pan of salted water to the boil and simmer the duck eggs for about 7 mins, to get a runny yolk and a cooked white. Serve immediately with the warm soldiers for dipping.

Teen Column Hi Everyone,
I hope you all had a lovely February.
I have been planning my 18th birthday further and Emily have even discovered I am spending it in Paris! I have already started packing lots of thermals as it looks like the weather will be even colder than in England. It’s also meant to be raining a lot so I’ve made sure to pack a raincoat!
Also this month I have finally bought a car! It is a Nissan Micra, which is very easy to drive; I am so excited to go and pick it up in a couple of weeks and finally start practicing outside of my lessons. I have passed my theory test and I’ve already booked my practical one, I can’t wait! I’m now trying to sort out the insurance, which is taking a long time. There are so many different companies and options that it all becomes very complicated. I’m sure it will all be worthwhile once I’m on the road. Tuckton Tea Gardens has been a favourite place of mine for many years and my favourite drink must be the raspberry ripple meringue milkshake. The shakes are freshly made using any of the New Forest ice creams that are on sale there and are huge and delicious. The staff are always really friendly and welcoming; they’ve certainly got to know me now!
Another nice place to visit is Nellie Mimosa on Southbourne High Street. They have a lovely variety of gifts that are great for birthdays and suit everyone’s pocket. I have quite a few of their products hanging in my bedroom and have given lots of them to my friends. A beautiful wall plaque is now on its way to New Zealand for my Auntie’s birthday! I’ll let you know how I get on in Paris in the next magazine, have a nice March x
