welcome
editor’s letter
to the Highcliffe Eye Community Magazine
I can’t believe it’s nearly May already! May is a great month for Christchurch with the Christchurch Food & Wine Festival drawing thousands of people in to our town, which is fantastic for the local economy whilst also bringing our great community together. The Food Festival was the idea of Mary Reader, now Festival President, as part of the Chamber of Trade’s business development group. It is run jointly by volunteer business people and Council staff, supported by the Chamber and Council. The event has grown hugely over the 13 years it’s been running and is now looked upon as one of the best Food Festivals in the UK. The 2013 Festival is set to take place from 10th to 19th May. To check out all the events taking place this year, go to their website www.christchurchfoodfest.co.uk or pop into the Christchurch Information Centre on the High Street to find out more. I was excited to receive an email from ITV this week with a request to help find people from the local area to take part in the newly revamped series of Secret Dealers. If you’ve a few treasures lurking about in your house that you would like seen turned into cash, why not apply to feature on their show?! Turn to page 15 to find out how you can do this. This month’s recipe is your classic Victoria Sponge cake, which is my all time favourite. A large slice of this with a cup of tea in the garden is just delightful. Turn to page 6 to give this delicious recipe a try. Until next month, Happy reading!

Business Column OVER 20 YEARS IN CHRISTCHURCH
FREE FLOWING FOR BUSINESS?
P
erhaps the biggest complaint against our otherwise splendid town is traffic congestion. Solutions range from a new by-pass to trams and sea travel – but they all need cash! However, the government has recently Julie given towns countrywide money for the promotion of sustainable transport. Works are due to get underway which aim to make it easier and safer for people to get about by bus or cycle or to walk hopefully reducing traffic. Here the works form part of the Three Towns Travel scheme*, being undertaken jointly by Dorset’s three highway authorities, Dorset County, Bournemouth and Poole Councils. The £12.1 million project will provide improvements along the A35 corridor. In Christchurch this means the introduction of bus lanes, new traffic lights at some junctions and construction of new cycle lanes.

Businesses will tell you that the easy movement of goods, staff and customers is vital, so will these schemes help business? The Chamber of Trade has made protests about the proposals believing they will actually add to traffic delays and shrink trade. The installation of traffic lights at the Stour Road / Bargates junction and the railway bridge at Burton are particularly contentious.
If the works achieve their aim, there should eventually, in theory, be fewer vehicles on the road. But people are very attached to their cars, so I hope that the improvements don’t cause the hold-ups feared. Business needs to keep on the move. http://www.dorsetforyou.com/threetownstravel

Another huge concern has been unrelated proposals to reduce or remove on-street parking on High Street, Bridge Street and Stour Road. So I spoke with Andrew Bradley, Management Engineer at Dorset County Council, who assures me these latter proposals are not planned. This will be a great relief to the businesses on these routes.

Ingredients 225g/8oz butter or margarine, softened 225g/8oz caster sugar 4 medium eggs 2 tsp vanilla extract 225g/8oz self raising flour milk, to loosen
Preparation method Preheat the oven to 180C/350F/Gas 4. Grease and line 2 x 18cm/7in cake tins with baking paper. Cream the butter and the sugar together in a bowl until pale and fluffy. Beat in the eggs, a little at a time, and stir in the vanilla extract then fold in the flour using a large metal spoon, adding a little extra milk if necessary, to create a batter with a soft dropping consistency. Divide the mixture between the cake tins and gently spread out with a spatula. Bake for 20-25 minutes, or until golden-brown on top and a skewer inserted into the middle comes out clean. Remove from the oven and set aside for 5 minutes, then remove from the tin and peel off the paper. Place onto a wire rack. Sandwich the cakes together with jam, lemon curd or whipped cream and berries or just enjoy on its own.

The Legend of the Christchurch Dragon
T
he story of the Christchurch Dragon can justly be called Christchurch’s best least-known legend!
At Easter in the year 1112 the citizens of the French city of Laon rebelled against their cruel lord, Bishop Gaudry. When the rioters eventually found Bishop Gaudry hiding in an empty barrel in the cellars of his palace they brutally murdered him (Picture). The palace was then set ablaze, but the uncontrolled flames spread to the nearby Cathedral of Notre-Dame, destroying it. How do these violent events relate to the local history of Christchurch... or to a dragon? In his contemporary account of the riot and its aftermath, Abbot Guibert de Nogent recorded how a party of nine canons from Laon subsequently undertook a fund-raising expedition through southern England to help rebuild the cathedral. Abbot Guibert only briefly mentions the events that took place when they visited Christchurch in the early summer of 1113, but some 30 years later a retired Abbot named Hermann de Tournai wrote a more detailed account. This provides a vivid description of everyday life in early 12th century ‘Christikerca’ – if encountering a five-headed fire-breathing dragon is considered an ‘everyday’ occurrence! Hermann tells how the canons arrived during a torrential rain-storm, but were uncharitably denied shelter in the church by the impious Dean. (Although not named, this was undoubtedly Dean Peter de Oglander, who is similarly maligned in the Christchurch Priory Cartulary.) Nor could the canons find accommodation elsewhere because they had arrived on the eve of the town’s popular annual fair and everywhere was crowded with traders. (This is the earliest known reference to the Holy Trinity Fair, which continued until 1871.) However, some traders lodging in a newly-built guesthouse generously vacated their rooms. That night the canons tended a poor cow-herder’s daughter who had been born with
8

a deformed foot, and the following morning she was found to have been ‘miraculously’ healed. After an early lunch the canons departed for Exeter, but they had ridden less than two miles when summoned to return by two horsemen - the church and town had been set ablaze by a terrible fiveheaded fire-breathing dragon! They hurried back and were astounded to find the guesthouse standing totally unscathed amidst the smouldering ruins of the neighbouring houses. The owner and his wife were safe inside, and the generous traders had also all escaped unharmed. Dean Peter, however, was found attempting to save his most valuable possessions by stowing them onboard a boat on the nearby river (presumably the Stour) - but the dragon swooped down and ‘as if fulfilling the purpose for which it had come’ burned the boat and everything on board before flying back out to sea. Hermann’s story of the Christchurch Dragon later appears in the Icelandic sagas, and in the early 13th century was retold in rhyming couplets by Prior Gautier de Coincy, a French poet-composer. The illustrations in de Coincy’s manuscript, although clearly painted from imagination over a century after the events portrayed, are almost certainly the earliest depictions of Christchurch! What did the Canons of Laon witness in 1113? Theories to explain the terrifying five-headed dragon range from ball lightning to a raid by five Viking longships. The truth may never be known, but perhaps the greater mystery is why this remarkable story has remained virtually unknown in the town of its origin.
The 900th anniversary of the town’s very own dragon is being celebrated by Christchurch Dragon Festival, which is centred on the weekend of Trinity Sunday - 25/26 May. For details of events and activities, including a free Dragon Quest competition, see the special supplement in this issue of Christchurch Eye. Phil Tate’s new booklet ‘On the Trail of the Christchurch Dragon’ tells the legend on a self-guided history walk around the town centre - available now from Christchurch Information Centre and other local outlets, priced at only £3.50!

Zoe’s Birthday Bash - a Great Success! Zoe’s Birthday Bash a charity event held at The Boathouse in Christchurch was a great success organisers confirm. The fun-filled day held in memory of Christchurch toddler Zoe Dobson to raise funds in aid of The Neuroblastoma Society (Charity No. 326385) took place on Saturday 23rd March. Despite it being a particularly cold, slightly damp and very grey day the event raised over £2000 which is a wonderful contribution towards the fight against this devastating disease. The organisers, Zoe’s parents would like to give a massive thank you to everyone who helped make Zoe’s Birthday Bash a success. ‘Without all the local businesses who sponsored a hole, donated prizes or services, and all the volunteers that baked cakes, ran stalls and gave their time we couldn’t have done it. In particular we would like to thank everyone who turned up to support the event in such unfavourable weather. We are considering further events and hope that we can rely on local support in the future’.

Turn your unwanted antiques into serious money, without even leaving the house! Complete with a fresh look for the new series, Secret Dealers sees three rival antique dealers doing battle in private homes for items they can sell. The competing dealers tour the house inspecting everything of value. From jewellery, sideboards and children’s toys, to jumbled attics, and furniture; nothing is out of bounds to the dealers. The owners are then faced with a bonanza of surprise valuations and cash offers on some of their most prized (or Dealers: Mike Melody Karen Dalmeny Tim Hogarth Alison Chapman David Ford Simon Schneider Mark Stevens
not so prized) possessions. They can either accept or reject the offers and the owners must then face the choice between sentimental attachment and the chance to make a fast buck. The dealers must use all their skill to sell the items and compete to make the most profit.
How to apply for Secret Dealers: We are now looking for people nationwide to take part, so if you think you have at least 12 quality antique items or collectables then we would like to hear from you. Call us on: 0117 970 7674 or Email: secretdealers@ rdftelevision.com

This year I have given Rachel myself lots of reasons U not to go the Food Festival. Firstly, there’s U all that free food tasting. I just know that if I’m offered a try of new cheeses or olives or U Cracked heels chocolate, or cake or ham or chutney or pie or All in the comfort bread or wine (stopping now as I’m dribbling) of your own home I won’t be able to resist. Then I will inevitably have to buy them as it’s always gorgeous, and by the time the day is over I will have spent my For more information entire food budget, and we’ll end up eating Please call Tracey on beans on toast for the rest of the month, 01425 838458 / 07779 843051 which is not good for anyone (particularly my friends). You can also guarantee that I’ll bump into someone I know just as I have my mouth stuffed full of hog roast, or while I’m dripping Tracey Butchart.indd 1 ketchup down my chin or have cream cake on my nose - oh the embarrassment. Then there are the celebrity demonstrations. These are very dangerous as they give me ideas above my cooking ability. I will be led to believe that I too can make a tasty nutritious and healthy dish in less than half an hour, when in fact it will take me 3, and mean dirtying every kitchen utensil I own. Though I do always learn some new techniques, and the dishes are delicious - and I would miss out on the cheese and the chocolate and the olives and the bread and the cake and the wine... No, you will not see me at the Food Festival. (And hopefully you won’t spot me buying baked beans, air freshener and a wig either…) Have a great month!

Garden View
A Jar of Nostalgia If you’re reading this you probably have an interest in gardening, but even armchair gardeners must be happy that spring is now well under way. May brings with it a wonderful selection of flowers, mainly in cool blues, purples, pinks and whites, and some great fragrances too, including the heady scent of Lilac. It’s an old fashioned shrub which has fallen out of favour, and for the majority of the year it looks relatively uninteresting – but the Lilac bush smells fantastic in a gentle May evening breeze. Mix this aroma with the scent of freshly mown grass and you have the most perfect spring fragrance, better than any airfreshener. After a long winter with more snow than I can ever remember, and yet more depressing news about our economy, I think what we all need is to enjoy a little nostalgia; I’m not talking bunting here, but bedding plants. Towards the end of the month is the time when bedding plants and other tender perennials can be planted outside. Thousands of people will flock to garden centres up and down the country over the coming weeks, and for some it’s their only pilgrimage of the year to the outdoor retail world. It’s an opportunity for the nurseryman (or woman) to display row after row of highly colourful plants, stacked, tray by tray like jars of sweets in an old fashioned shop. Each standing to attention, faces held high, their label pointing forwards and each doing their utmost to shout “buy me, buy me”. The flowers shine in the sunshine like the sparkling boiled fruit sweets in the jars, oh what is it to be, the bi coloured rhubarb custards, or the combination of blackberry and raspberry jellies?
Choosing your colour scheme for this year’s bedding display (be that just the one hanging basket or a front garden that looks like a Victorian public park) is exciting, and a totally personal task. I’ve know it can cause arguments between couples, but have also known marriages which have survived successfully on the basis that “you plant your side and I’ll plant mine”. There are those who like a multi coloured cocktail of plants (a mixed tray of Petunias for example), those who prefer to stick to a muted pallet of 2-3 ‘sophisticated colours’ (usually purple, blue and white) and then those trying to achieve a Swiss cottage look who might plummet for just the one (perhaps a red trailing Ivy Leafed Pelargonium). But whatever your preference I don’t think it really matters, because buying annual bedding plants brings nostalgic happiness all round; it’s good for the nurseryman’s business, brilliant for passersby to enjoy, and most importantly great at making you feel happy at home. Happy Gardening, Lee
