Dear Reader I can’t believe that it’s May already. It’s a great time of year for Highcliffe with the Revival Food Festival happening in the village on Cheryl Saturday 21st May. The festival will be taking place from 10am to 5pm with so much going on in that time including food stalls, street entertainment, demonstrations by some well known celebrity and local chefs, Kidz Kitchen and not forgetting the Great Highcliffe Baking Competition. It’s sure to be a fun day for all the family. We also have two bank holidays to enjoy this month, let’s hope that the weather will start picking up soon so that we can get out and about and enjoy all that our local surroundings have to offer. We have a new column for you to enjoy this month from the Highcliffe Sailing Club and we warmly welcome them to the magazine.

Local History

by Len Wigg

Christchurch might have been described thus for many centuries. Though in prehistoric times, the harbour by Hengistbury Head was probably one of the busiest in the country. The evidence is visible at The Red House Museum, including flint arrowheads from the Stone Age; Bronze Age axe heads and Iron Age pottery imported from Normandy. Later the Romans came, and chose Hamworthy, building a large fort at Lake near Wimborne. Then the Saxons developed Twynham, meaning `between the rivers’, on the other side of the harbour, with a church which later became the present Priory. Stone and much other local merchandise would have been conveyed by boats using the quay. The Norman Conquest happened in 1066. King William saw the enjoyment to be had from hunting in his newly designated Royal Forest. The main westward route from Winchester or Southampton through this Forest was via Ringwood. There would just have been a network of local packhorse tracks linking villages to Christchurch and Lymington, Ringwood, Wimborne and across the heathland to Poole. In the 17th century George Fox, the founder of the Quakers, travelled extensively and kept a journal. He visited Ringwood and Poole 5 times between 1655 and 1663 but he never used the minor track to Christchurch. Other travellers like Celia Fiennes (c.1682- c.1712) and Daniel Defoe `A Tour through the Whole Island of Great Britain’ (1724-26) did not visit either.

- Off the beaten track? It had milestones to show the distance from Lymington and one by the roundabout to Walkford is illustrated. Then more people wished to travel and extend trade. Roads had been neglected so Turnpike Trusts were established with tollhouses to collect money for using and repairing the road. Neighbouring towns featured in at least 2 Turnpike Trusts circa 1750 but Christchurch had none until 1841, when one was authorised to Lyndhurst. Milestones became more informative and a remaining one on the A35 is illustrated. Also the Brinton Toll Bar (illustrated) can be seen better coming towards Christchurch. (Grid Reference SU 276066). It has two small windows facing along the road so the gatekeeper could see traffic approaching and go to collect the toll. The Southampton and Dorchester railway was opened in June 1847 and crossed this road. The station at Holmsley was called `Christchurch Road’ for a while, coaches and horses providing connections with each train. The families who provided these services will be featured in a future article. At last in November 1862 Christchurch gained its own station, on a branch from Ringwood, and the town had easy connections to the rest of the country.

An early map was drawn by John Ogilby c1697. It was a `road strip’ map from Limington (sic) to Pool (sic), now the A337 to Somerford, the town and along the A35.

Highcliffe-on-Sea Traders Association

This upcoming month on Saturday 21st May sees the 2nd Annual Food Festival of Highcliffe!

We are all very excited as Helen last years was such a huge success with so much going on, in and around Highcliffe for all the family. The stalls available along the street sold out in record time and there promises to be some beautiful smells wafting up and down the street as producers pour in from around the counties. Our own local food producers will also be rustling up barbecues outside their shops so there will be no shortage of foodie treats for you all. We’re just praying for the sunshine, so far the long range forecast looks favourable, so no raindances from anyone please. Alongside the food festival there will be plenty of entertainment from pop up Zumba classes to steel drum bands and the local choirs. Down by the Cliffhanger there will be Zorbing and even a climbing wall; that along with all the food demonstrations from local chefs and guest chefs you’ve really got to get here early to fit it all in! There is even a kid’s cookery school running and tickets are available from Chris Watson the Butcher. Brochures with what’s going on where and when, are being delivered and distributed soon so you pick up a copy, they will be available in most local shops. We look forward to seeing you there.

Aside from that the High Street is waking up to a promising start to the spring. The local HELP group is merrily painting the bollards in lovely beachy colours to brighten up the street and some of the empty shops are being worked on hopefully for some surprise openings soon. All in all it’s a lovely, lively start to the summer / spring season and please support your High Street by popping in whenever you can!

PROGRAMMES NOW AVAILABLE FOR THE HIGHCLIFFE REVIVAL FOOD FESTIVAL - SATURDAY 21ST MAY 2016 Set to be one of the major events in a foodie’s calendar, and the largest event ever held in Highcliffe, Highcliffe Revival Food Festival will be three times larger than last year’s successful event.

Over seventy stalls have been booked selling a huge variety of food products to take home or to eat on-site. Colourful printed programmes are now available for the event, which will take place on Saturday 21 May and will form the final event of the Christchurch Food and Wine Festival. Once again the main Lymington Road running through the shopping centre will be closed, allowing people to wander freely and enjoy the stalls and the entertainment on offer. Free cookery demonstrations featuring TV’s Valentine Warner, James Golding from the Pig group, Kevin Brown from the Lord Bute and Colin Nash from the Three Tuns will entertain and inform - and parents can enjoy some free time by booking their children into the ‘Kidz Kitchen’ which will be also be held in the Methodist Hall. Tickets costing only £8 are now available from Chris Watson Butchers. Children will be taught by Rachel Hills of the Skylight Kitchen and learn to cook chicken schnitzel and cheesy bean cakes. Keen cooks can enter their cakes in the great Highcliffe Baking Competition and for those wishing to improve their icing skills, tickets are also available for icing courses led by cake expert Helen Shaw from Vanilla Pink Cakes. Helen will be teaching adults and children to make a beach-themed topper. Both the cake competition forms and the tickets are available from the ‘Fire and Ice Café’ in Lymington Road. These courses will be held along with the cake competition in the Sports and Social Club, Lymington Road. Also being held in the club this year is a unique Japanese tea tasting. A ‘specials’ board lists events on or near the Festival day in local cafés and restaurants, including a Mr Selfridge tea at Highcliffe Castle and a splendid themed Selfridge dinner at the Lord Bute restaurant. Seventeen groups of musical acts and dancers have been booked to perform throughout the day and there will be lots of children’s entertainment on the Clifftop (next door to the Cliffhanger) including inflatable body zorbs, water rollers and a climbing wall where you will be able to catch a bird’s eye view of the coastline. Programmes are available from shops cafés, restaurants, the Post Office, local library in Highcliffe and also the Christchurch Information centre. At long last, a Christchurch development is taking place. Eight years after Aldi’s first application in 2008 for development at the top of Somerford (now called Meteor Park), not only has the work started but it is proceeding at a cracking pace. Indeed it will not be long before the keys to the site are handed over to the retailers. Only a few years ago we were reeling from numerous supermarket planning applications. The site at the back of Barrack Road was the first to get permission for an Asda store – but the site still remains empty. Next Beagles’ application for the building of a Morrisons finally got the go ahead after appeal – but again there is no sign of any development taking place. However, at long last, east Christchurch is getting its development. By the autumn fitting out should be completed, staff recruitment will have taken place and the stores should be opening by Christmas. As well as Aldi, clothing and footwear will be supplied by Matalan, TK Maxx and Sports Direct. The plan is to stop us all going off to Castlepoint and to keep a bigger chunk of our spending here in Christchurch. The worry is the effect it will have on our town centre. With free parking it is bound to attract some shoppers away from the high street. Poundland is also opening a branch at Meteor Park which raises the question as to whether they will still keep on the store that they recently took over in the town centre. The proposed takeover of Argos by Sainsburys also makes one wonder what the long term future of that store will be and whether it may make the move to Sainsburys in east Christchurch in due course. The development at Meteor Park is going to be good for Somerford, but unsettling for the town centre.

Christchurch Blue Plaques by Stephen Roberts No. 16 - The Regent Centre

‘Sandwiched’ (excuse pun) between ‘Subway’ and the TIC is the Regent Centre, which first opened as the ‘Regent Cinema’ in 1931.

Apparently the opening was quite a hullabaloo, with the ‘first installation in the county of Holophone musical colour effects’. I have no idea what that gave the cinemagoers of the 30s, but there was clearly some fanfare. That county was Hampshire by the way, Christchurch’s move to Dorset well over 40 years distant.

Fashions wax and wane and cinema lost popularity as folk found other things to do with their spare time. The building became a bingo hall, but thankfully was eventually restored to its former use and is now very much the town’s arts and entertainment hub and smack in the High Street too. Due apologies by the way to those who love their bingo. The Regent Centre was extended at the back with the new Studio Theatre in 2000. Jointly funded by the Regent Centre Association and Council, this was the borough’s main Millennium project. The blue plaque tells us a good deal more about this spot’s history. Before the cinema came along there was a bookshop, ‘Caxton House’, and it was here ‘Gleeson White’ was born in 1852. Well, he was actually born Joseph William White, but dropped his forenames (identical to his father’s) and replaced them with his mother’s maiden name. Whatever his name was, White was clearly a man of some versatility,

being described as ‘artist, illustrator, author and first editor in 1895 of ‘The Studio’ art magazine’. He was also a self-educated craftsman and designer and a collector. He was the son of a bookseller and stationer and traded here as a bookseller himself.

Stephen

Born and educated in Christchurch, White was an ‘art writer’, whose published works included ‘Master Painters of Great Britain’ in four volumes (1897-98). White, an influential editor of the 1890s, lived for a few years in New York in his early 40s, but returned to England to be the first serving editor (1893-95) of ‘The Studio’, a wide-circulation, illustrated, fine and decorative arts magazine. The Regent Centre was yet to come of course. Today it is a happy mix of Art Deco heritage and modern entertainments complex, which is open 365 days a year, including Christmas Day, putting on a variety of shows, everything from films and amateur dramatics to tribute acts and satellite broadcasts. Get out there and enjoy it; it’s infinitely preferable to sitting in front of that ‘box’ in the corner of the living room and being dumbed down by reality-show piffle.

And what happened to Gleeson White? Well, he continued contributing to ‘The Studio’ until he was prematurely taken from us, aged 47, a victim of typhoid fever in 1898. Next time: Trolleybus turntable (the final instalment)

Highcliffe-on-Sea Rotary Club

Every Thursday evening,

the Highcliffe Rotary Club meets at Hoburne Park in Highcliffe to conduct its normal club business before Susan finishing with a formal meal. Part of the weekly agenda is to find ways to help the local community, and in doing so, offers significant opportunities to the young people of Highcliffe School with a variety of projects and competitions, recently including a Young Chef Competition and Technology Tournament for Bournemouth and Christchurch students. On Thursday 17th March, St. Patrick’s Day, Highcliffe School repaid the Rotarians by inviting club members to hold their weekly meeting in the well-equipped Da Vinci building. Fifteen Year 9 students, supervised by Mrs Rowe and Miss Leitch, prepared and served a three course meal to 30 Rotary Club members. A delicious menu started with Potato, Bacon & Chive Soup with soda bread, followed by a main course of Beef in Guinness, champ & seasonal vegetables and dessert was a superb Baileys & Chocolate Cheesecake. While coffee and mints were enjoyed, four exceptional young ladies taking EPQ A Level examinations, gave the Rotary Club short, informative presentations on the research they had done to develop and extend their abilities beyond their main programme of study. The students chose to plan, research, carry out and deliver their individual topics as follows: Pippa Peters-Cheale Assisted Dying: Are we on the threshold of change? Chloe Charlewood Cancer: What is the ‘breast’ treatment? Chloe Finch Are the Legal Aid cuts of 2013 morally right? Caitlin McNee-Smith Is the current system of organ donation effective? Rotary president Bob Salter thanked the students for a wonderful evening and meal, but not before proudly reporting to the Club that Highcliffe School had won first place and two second places out of nine available in the Technology tournament, against 33 other teams. After blasting into the 2016 sailing season with a fantastically well-attended and exciting Icicle Open racing series in January and February, the club has turned its attentions momentarily away from the water and onto more practical land tasks.

‘£30,000 OFF THE ASKING PRICE OF APARTMENT OF THE MONTH AND WE’LL PAY YOUR SERVICE CHARGES FOR 2 YEARS’ SAYS RENAISSANCE RETIREMENT

A local retirement company has some great news for people looking to buy a luxury apartment in Christchurch this month. The price of its Apartment of the Month has been dropped to £250,000 from £280,000 and the company is also offering to pay the potential buyers’ apartment service charges for two years.

The unprecedented offer has been made by Renaissance Retirement at its Fleur-de-Lis apartments in the centre of Christchurch – thought to be the best location in Dorset for retirement living. “With now only a few remaining apartments left and these new incentives, we expect an increased amount of interest and last chance for buyers to secure their new home,” said Matt Smith, sales manager at Renaissance Retirement.

“There are some excellent deals on some of the remaining apartments starting with £30,000 off apartment of the month. We are offering an attractive alternative for people worried about paying the service charges once they’ve moved in. “Our new promotion gives potential owners the chance to enjoy two years free without service charges and experience an exceptional level of retirement living here at Fleur-de-Lis Christchurch. It’s a unique experience plus lifestyle, which we are confident people will fall in love with and reserve.

“With 75% of apartments sold we are nearing the majority of our apartments becoming occupied and in addition drawing up some very special deals on select apartments.” Potential buyers are being attracted to our Christchurch development for a number of reasons. The convenient location centered in the heart of this historic town, is a stone throw away from the high street and yet has the tranquility of Druitt gardens nestled behind. The Renaissance team will also be on hand to give private accompanied tours of the development throughout each afternoon. Teen Eye Hello!

I have been busy practising my driving as my test is this month. I am very excited but also Emily slightly nervous as the test centre has moved to Poole where I am less familiar with the roads. Hopefully if I practice the test routes often I will feel more confident for the Big Day. Fingers crossed I pass!!! Now the weather is (slightly) warming up, I’m looking forward to having a go at Paddleboarding. The ‘Ladies That Paddle Christchurch’ group meet weekly at Christchurch Quay to explore the river. There is no charge if you have your own board and all are welcome; more details can be found on their facebook page (just tap in Ladies that Paddle Christchurch). Hopefully I will find that I have a good sense of balance and will remain out of the water!

It is very exciting that I only have one more month left of revision before my A2 exams in June. I can’t wait to finish and have such a long summer ahead of me. The fact I go on holiday the weekend after my exams finish is really helping me get through all the work I have to do to prepare myself. Having a few events such as the Soundclash Festival this month will give me a welcome break from revising. I wish you all good luck for any exams you may be taking over the next few months. Have a lovely May!

HOW DOES YOUR GARDEN GROW? BRING ON THE BIOLOGICAL WARFARE!

I’m a huge fan of biological warfare. But before you all write in to complain about my radical stance, I’m really not talking about anthrax and Ebola: I’m talking about using nature to tip the balance in favour of us gardeners. Ladybirds are my favourite biological control. They feast on aphids (greenfly) and during their year long lifespan they can scoff 5000 of them! Ladybird larvae are long and black with orange spots. They look a bit mean but don’t be tempted to squish them as they are also voracious aphid-eaters.

Lacewing larvae eat 300 aphids each before turning into adult lacewings and guzzling down even more, and even the much maligned wasp has a taste for greenfly so don’t be too quick to swat it with your gardening glove; it’s actually protecting your roses. The beautiful song thrush is in decline, but it loves to eat slugs and snails. Thrushes were very susceptible to slug-bait poison based on methiocarb and this was banned by the EU in 2014. The most common ingredient now is metaldehyde which is still very toxic to many garden beasts (as well as domestic animals). And slug bait is a very inefficient way to dispose of your slug population anyway, reducing it on average by just 10%. Frogs and toads are great slug-eaters, as are hedgehogs. The former can be encouraged by providing them with a tiny pond: it really doesn’t have to be much bigger than a bucket sunk into the ground.

34 • Highcliffe Eye • May 2016

Hedgehogs prefer a pile of logs to hide under, or you could invest in a hedgehog house. There are many handsome ones about, though if you’re a bit of a handyman you could probably make one yourself.

The big new thing in biological pest control in recent years was the arrival of pre-packed nematodes and mites. Nematodes are tiny parasites which are watered on to a problem area when the soil temperature is 10C or greater. The nematodes enter the pest and reproduce inside it, killing it in the process. When the pest dies they are then released back into the soil, ready to infect new pests. There are nematodes to target slugs, vine weevils and ants. Predatory mites are also available to target red spider mite and thrips. All of these methods have the advantage of targeting a particular pest very specifically without causing damage to the environment. Of course with organic gardening you’re unlikely to get a pristine plot but don’t despair about the odd blemish. See it as a positive sign that you care about the environment and the wildlife in your garden then repeat after me, blemishes are beautiful...

Mum’s the Word Spring cleaning? Utterly boring? Probably. But I still find myself doing it and at the end being quietly a little Natasha beside myself, bordering on giddy. And then I want no one to step foot in my house for at least a week so I can just sit and marvel in it. Alone. Alongside the annual, I mean quarterly spring-clean I’ve been trying the art of ‘decluttering’. Sorting through the drawer of wires with no plugs and random odd toothbrushes with no owner, I have found this has actually been a massive victory. I would recommend it to anyone, who could do with not owning shares in storage baskets! If you have or do have a good old sort out, there are many places that will happily take your old things, from the obvious local charity shops, to getting in touch with local preschools who could make use of those 12 extra pairs of princess shoes. If you have any run down pieces of furniture that you’re close to throwing, you can try one of Thomas and Lucia’s Annie Sloan Paint Workshops, and learn how to make your old drawers worthy of linen napkins rather than baby wipes. However, if you have items that just don’t cut the mustard for you anymore, you can always get in touch with Dorset Reclaim, a non-profit charity who collect for free from Christchurch and sell the items to people who are on smaller incomes and for whom shop prices are often too high. They will take nearly anything from beds to cookers, just go to their website (www.dorsetreclaim.org.uk) to see how to donate. So there’s just a few little ideas on how to reduce, reuse, recycle! I’m off to get the rubber gloves (and switch off Bob The Builder...)

Homemade Toffee Crisp Bars INGREDIENTS

125g rice krispies 175g unsalted butter 5 Mars Bars – roughly chopped 300g milk chocolate

METHOD

Line a 7 x 10 inch baking dish with greaseproof paper. Place the butter and the Mars Bars into a saucepan and melt gently over a low heat, stirring frequently. Once melted, beat well to eliminate any lumps. Add the rice krispies and mix well to ensure they have been coated in the mars bar sauce then pour into the baking dish and ensure it is pressed into all the corners and the top is smooth. Leave somewhere to cool for about an hour; meanwhile melt the chocolate in the microwave at 30 second bursts. Once the krispy mixture is cool, pour the chocolate over the top and smooth it all over and leave somewhere to cool again. When the chocolate is cool place in the fridge for an hour to set, then carefully remove from the dish using a sharp knife cut into equal sized rectangles. Keep in an airtight container in the fridge to keep them as crispy as possible and the chocolate firm and chilled.
