Restaurant Review: Cheese & Alfie’s... restaurant and the start of what turned out to be a fabulous evening. The restaurant allows you to eat at your own pace, some diners, who seemed to be on a schedule, got through their meal quickly and smoothly, and others dined slower and a steady stream of tasty dishes came at a perfect pace. The staff seemed to be able to gauge what was needed and when for every individual.
Kathy and Claire
The ‘Supper Club’ menu covers all needs; there is plenty of choice of fish, meat, vegetarian and low fat / fat free dishes both starter and main courses, there heese and Alfie’s, what a fantastic spot for is a section for the pasta lovers too. There are some a restaurant; the cobbled street leading up well known favourites, but with a bit of a twist such to the backdrop of the Priory and strolling as ‘the burger’ that is served on a small butchers distance from the beautiful relic of Norman block that towers high, and game sausages with Hall and Convent Walk. This little gem is situated in chocolate jus. One of the main contenders on the the historic quarter of Christchurch. It’s on both the daytime and evening menus and when we spoke The décor is bright and funky with unusual artwork to Mike, the owner about ‘the pan’ he commented and quirky pieces splashed around the place. “who say’s breakfast has to be eaten in the morning. Colours of turquoise and bright pink make a Breakfast is the most important meal of the day, so it refreshing combination and are followed throughout should be available all day!” the restaurant right through to the staffs’ uniforms, cheeky graphics and slogans on the walls. There are comfy areas with a sofa and window seat to The portions at Cheese and Alfies are hearty, to say while away the hours with one of the ‘free’ books, the least, and although we didn’t think we would there’s even a selection of small toys to keep the kids be able to manage a dessert, the choice of white amused while you’re eating. The open plan kitchen chocolate cheesecake, treacle tart and fruit crumble creates an exciting vibe and it’s wonderful to see was too tempting. In the end we opted to share a what goes on behind the scenes - it was a positive ‘brownie-boker-glory; a mountain of chocolate ice feeling throughout the evening. There is fresh cream, chocolate brownie, chocolate sauce and fruit produce on display and is used to stock the kitchen served in a tall sundae glass – incredible! when needed and a variety of freshly homemade cakes. Cheese and Alfies has certainly covered all the bases

Having previously sampled the daytime menu, this time we decided to give the evening a try, and the atmosphere was set straight away as we were greeted by a member of staff from the open plan kitchen, which immediately made us feel part of the 6

Mark Davies, who delivers Riverford vegboxes in Bournemouth, Ringwood, Christchurch & Lymington comments, “We hope everyone who buys our seedlings catches the gardening bug. The Good Life isn’t always easy, but eating something you have grown yourself is hugely rewarding. Half of our customers already grow their own veg[2]. They appreciate the benefits of fresh veg and use our weekly boxes to supplement what they can’t produce themselves.”

The Brazilian Blow Dry If you’re in need of an effortlessly gorgeous hairstyle for spring, why not try The Brazilian blow dry?
H
ave you ever wondered how the Hollywood A-List from the likes of Nicole Ritchie, Lindsay Lohan and Ashley Tisdale have impossibly perfect, easy to maintain, bouncy hair all the time? We know it helps that they’re alarmed with an entourage of make-up artists, but one thing they all have in common is that they’re using the Brazilian ……. The Brazilian Blow Dry is different from all other straightening techniques because it doesn’t completely straighten the hair. The hair still has plenty of volume and body and can still be worn curly or wavy. The Brazilian just softens whatever curl or wave you have. If the hair is air dried without a blow dryer, it will still have wave or curl but no frizz. On the flip side, if you want to blow dry your hair straight, you can do that without a brush in a fraction of the time it would have taken without the Brazilian. Also, with other methods, there is a line of demarcation, meaning that when new hair grows, it is curly/ wavy while the rest of the hair is straight. This blowdry method washes away with time and is diffused, so there is no noticeable difference between new hair and treated hair. Other methods also have harsh chemicals in them like formaldehyde. Let the Christchurch Games begin!
T
he Games of Friendship between Christchurch and teams from three European countries have got off to a great start at Avon Tyrrell Activity Centre in Bransgore.
The young people aged 14 to 16 from St Ghislain in Belgium, Aalen in Germany and Sierakowice in Poland joined their Christchurch counterparts for the first day of the Games which consisted of activities such as bridge building, archery, a climbing wall, zipwire and crate stacking at Braggers Wood.
Polish VIPs, who had been due to join the team and spend time with councillors and officers from Christchurch Council, had abandoned their trip following the tragedy. The Mayor thanked the young people for coming to the Games, a town twinning event which is held every two years in a different European country, and also thanked all of the volunteers from Christchurch who had organised the event and were acting as team managers and welfare officers over the four days.
Earlier in the day the Mayor of Christchurch, Cllr David Flagg, The Games continued with football on the new synthetic turf officially opened the Games but first asked the young people pitches at Two Riversmeet Leisure Complex and swimming to observe a minute’s silence as a mark of respect following and water polo activities in the swimming pool at Two Bournemouth Flyer:Bournemouth Flyerand 13/7/09 07:30 and Page 1 events at The Grange School and the death of the Polish President, Lech Kaczynski, other Riversmeet athletic senior Polish figures in a plane crash the previous Saturday. sessions at Snowtrax.

Keep trade local! Christchurch Eye is encouraging shoppers to keep trade local and beat the credit crunch through an innovative card scheme being trialled here, in Christchurch. The Christchurch Eye Privilege Club is an initiative of Christchurch Eye magazine editor, Cheryl Dennett. The Privilege Club will be working alongside the magazine, which launched in December of last year .The Privilege Club is designed to promote the many benefits of shopping locally. It works by giving those who have purchased an annual membership exclusive, regularly updated deals and discounts at a wide range of shops and on local services, too. Cheryl launched the Privilege Club last month at Highcliffe Castle, where the ‘Keep it in Christchurch’ event took place. “Since setting up the community magazine, I have spoken to many traders in the area, which have made me aware of the need for such a scheme here, in Christchurch. The idea is to give Christchurch customers a reason for shopping in Christchurch through discounts and offers from participating traders & businesses. Like everyone locally, I’m very keen to see Christchurch prosper and hope that this idea will provide an exciting incentive to shop in the town.” Shops and businesses will set their own offers. A number of traders have already signed up to the Privilege Club. Terry Atkinson, General Secretary of Christchurch Chamber of Trade & Commerce said: “Christchurch Chamber of Trade welcomes the initiative of Christchurch Eye magazine to offer a privilege card scheme for town centre shoppers. This is an interesting opportunity for retailers to focus on consolidating their base of loyal customers, and for the local community to demonstrate their support for the High Street and its independent traders. We wish all involved every success with the project.” Rob Martin from Ye Olde George Inn says “These are tough times for both shoppers and retailers and for us to continue to thrive we need to offer value for money. This scheme will keep us ahead of our game. Local businesses are the lifeblood of our economy and society and they can only gain by working together. I wish this initiative every success and proud to be a part of it.” Privilege Club cards can be purchased from Christchurch Information Centre or Ye Olde George Inn in Castle Street, Christchurch. A number of traders have already signed up to the Privilege Club. Cheryl added: “I truly believe it will succeed and that it will snowball. The more people I get on board, the more variety there will be for shoppers.”

Two blondes walked into a building..........you'd think at least one of them would have seen it. I went to buy some camouflage trousers the other day but I couldn't find any. I went to the butchers the other day and I bet him 50 quid that he couldn't reach the meat off the top shelf. He said, 'No, the steaks are too high..' A man came round in hospital after a serious accident. He shouted, 'Doctor, doctor, I can't feel my legs!' The doctor replied, 'I know you can't, I've cut your arms off ' Our ice cream man was found lying on the floor of his van covered with hundreds and thousands.. Police say that he topped himself. Teen Column: I
Guides On Air
awoke at 6am that morning as I had to be in Southampton for half past 7. I was thrilled to be on Radio Solent. I’m grateful for all the things I do in guides. There are so many things I would never have done if I hadn’t joined. I had butterflies fluttering around in my stomach as I waited for my leader. The butterflies grew as we set off with the other guides. We chatted on the way and listened to the radio we were due to go on. I remained excited but incredibly nervous also. I kept chatting to hide it.
When we finally reached the studio I wanted to leap out of my seat. We unpacked the equipment needed for our confectioner’s badge we were doing on the radio. I enjoy earning badges. We waited at the entrance for someone to meet us. Our excitement was showing now. We were giggling and shaking. We saw people on computers, and screens with news reporters. I had never seen a news studio and found it quite interesting. I wished my friends had been there too. Finally a woman came to lead us to the studio. I couldn’t contain my excitement. We entered a room behind where the reporter was on live. It was fascinating to watch. We could see him talking in the recording room but we could also hear him on the radio. The woman explained what would happen. We were going to be interviewed then we would decorate biscuits and cakes. I was ecstatic! We were given name tags and prepared for the interview. Before we aired, I wondered if anybody I knew was listening. My parents were definitely listening. I was nervous about what I sounded like. The reporter was friendly and explained the questions we would answer. There was also a Polish woman there who had been discussing her guiding experiences in World War 2. Guides have been around for 100 years. I would love to see what guides were like then. It must have been so
Mollie different. My nerves disappeared when we aired. It was great answering the questions. I was surprised that we were asked about the war. I was unsure of my answer, and answered as best I could. The woman explained the war to us. I find the war intriguing and listened intently. After the first part of the interview we returned to the room to decorate cakes. The cake decorating was brilliant. We decorated marzipan cherries, cupcakes and biscuits. A few of the cakes had guide centenary signs on. Our centenary had begun that year and we were doing some amazing activities. After making them we tasted our cakes. They were delicious, but we saved the rest for later. In the second half of our interview we were asked about our cakes. We didn’t have to lie about the quality. The woman who had made the cakes with us was made an unofficial guide. We talked more about guiding and listened to music. Unfortunately we had to leave soon after. I was reluctant to leave but we had to. We cleared away and were led through the computer rooms. I once again saw all the screens with the news readers. Before leaving, a photographer took pictures of us for the BBC website. Afterwards it was time to go. I didn’t talk much on the way back. I was exhausted. I couldn’t keep my eyes open, and it wasn’t even midday. I had thoroughly enjoyed the day. It was another amazing experience at guides. Mollie Russell

Mayor’s Charity Concert now on DVD
T
he Concert, the first of its kind, was held at The Regent Centre in March, in aid of the Mayor of Christchurch’s charities, and there’s an impressive line-up. This includes the Christchurch ATC Band, the Highcliffe Brass Band, The Band of the Royal British Legion and a group from the popular
Taverners Big Band. Singers are well represented too, with the award winning Highcliffe Junior Choir, and the popular 40s style of Light and Shade. Look out for the special lighting effects in the first few minutes of La Nova Singers’ performance whilst listening to their sublime harmonies. The Concert was compered by David Gillard MBE of the Highcliffe Charity Players. You can see the trailer online at Netfora.tv. The DVD will raise funds for the Mayor’s good causes and is available at £9 from the Christchurch Information Centre and The Regent Centre.

ONE HUNDRED YEARS 1910 ~ 2010 Miller Brothers, Funeral Directors, Christchurch A history of a family business In 2010 Miller Bros. funeral directors of Christchurch, Dorset celebrate one hundred years of being in business in Christchurch. Something indeed, to celebrate, very few businesses reach that age and certainly a rarity here in Christchurch.
T
he Miller family can trace its history in Christchurch back over two hundred years to the late eighteenth century, working as carpenters, ferrymen, nurserymen, a miller at Place mill, photographer, verger at the Priory, brewery foreman, housemaids, painters, gardeners, builders and funeral directors. Alfred George Miller, grandson of the miller at Place mill, set up in business as a builder in 1910 in Purewell, Christchurch. He had previously worked as a picture framer and joiner and then as a foreman carpenter. In 1914, on the advice of Mr Frampton, from Frampton’s
Brewery in the High Street, he relocated to Barrack Road. Buying, with his two brothers, William and Clifford, the former ‘Cross Keys’ public house. This is where the name ‘Miller Brothers’ originates - the three brothers. At that time most of Miller Bros. work was building and decorating with the occasional funeral. Historically, you went to the carpenter for your coffin because he had the skills to make it. They did not own any funeral vehicles, renting them, when needed from a Bournemouth carriage master. AG built a large workshop in what had been the yard of the Cross Keys pub, he put a shop window in the front of the house and it became a painting and decorating shop complete with a wallpaper trimmer. AG and his wife Mary had two sons and four daughters. The eldest son, Alf, also became a carpenter and after Army service in the First World War, he returned home to work alongside his father and uncle. During the Second World War Alf was again in the Army and the business only really ticked over and towards 1945 had almost ceased. There was no building work done during the war only general house repairs and some decorating. Alf and his wife Lilly May also had two sons, Roy and Phil, who both went on to become carpenters and joiners, eventually, joining the family business. When Alf returned after world war two he had to rebuild the business almost from scratch. AG was 75 years old by now and there were hardly any funerals carried out. Alf was given special leave from the army to get it going again.
Barrack Road shopfront
24
Alf did not have a car after the war but went everywhere on his bike, even to the builders merchants in Bournemouth, carrying home wood on the cross bar. Alf worked hard to build the business up, mainly by word of

mouth. Funerals were still sporadic, Alf or Roy making the coffin and Alf carrying out the funeral, they would hire bearers for the day. Most of the coffins were made from English elm, the wood bought ‘green’ and weathered in the Barrack Road yard. Oak was expensive and was only used if requested or something special was needed. Alf used to sign write all the brass coffin plates, it was a difficult job and took some skill, each one taking about an hour to complete. In the late 1950’s residents of the Pit Site area of Barrack Road were served with compulsory purchase orders. It was to be demolished to make way for the so called, bypass, which did not actually bypass the town but divided it in two. So much for town planning! Alf bought 119 Bargates in 1958, it was two houses, and he spent a year converting it to business premises- offices, chapels, garages, workshops and stores with a flat above. In 1959 the business moved from Barrack Road to Bargates.
Staff 2009 After Alf’s death and then Phil’s in 1991, Roy carried on running the business along with Terry. Roy is now retired and Terry continues. At the present time the property and shares are all owned by family members. The town has seen many changes and Miller Bros. has changed with it. It has remained a true family business which is still going strong with traditional values at the forefront of every funeral that we arrange showing dignity and respect throughout. Compiled by Bev Miller 01202 474108 bevbrewhouse@btopenworld.com This is a very much shortened version of the History of Miller Bros. The full version is 28 pages of A4 including numerous photographs through the years.Contact Bev for any more information.
Whilst at Barrack Road there was still more building work than funerals, then the funerals increased, until, at Bargates, they were also making coffins for other local firms. The building work was gradually reduced until in 1974 it stopped altogether. In 1973 Miller Bros. bought the business of F.P Butler also in Bargates, to incorporate the name along with Butler’s long associations with the town. In the early days a ‘coffin cart’ was used to deliver the coffin to the house of the deceased where it stayed until the day of the funeral. The cart would be pushed within the town, not very discreetly, everyone knew what it was for- ‘there’s Miller’s off with their cart again’! When a hearse or car were needed they were hired from Bournemouth, very few undertakers had their own vehicles. Miller Bros. have had a variety of vehicles over the years, from the first black Model T Ford, Daimler, Humber, Volvo and Ford to today’s fleet of hearse and cars. Alf Miller died in 1974, three years after his grandson Terry joined the family business. Terry had trained in London passing funeral directing exams and becoming a qualified embalmer. Alf had also passed the funeral exams and was one of the first in England and Bournemouth to do so. It was Alf who really built up the business after the war and without his hard work it would not be where it is today.

Community In the midst of the cold, wet, grey and depressing January of 2010 a dedicated band of people struggle hundreds of miles across the snowcovered roads to the south coast.
Their goal? CONCEPTION,
a convention held at Hoburne Naish Holiday Park, perched on the cliffs just outside Highcliffe. For five days and nights they played games huddled around tables. Role-playing games. that may exist within those genres rather than themselves. CONCEPTION had about 500 attendees this year and has now been running for the past eleven years. Attendees have during that period, come from as far afield as the U.S. It regularly has groups travelling from Europe.
W
hat are role-playing games? Well, we’ve all imagined a situation and what we would have done in it. Be it as children playing with their toys, as team-building exercises in the workplace or watching films and thinking “I wouldn’t have done that!” Role-playing games are simply a structured version of the same thing, for fun, with people of a like mind in a social situation. The difference is that you are not only imagining yourself as being in the situation but are acting the part of someone who maybe very different from yourself (and in some cases not even human!). The games at CONCEPTION are structured into sessions lasting roughly four hours (though normal games may last considerably longer). The majority of these games consist of groups of 6-8 people. One person acts as a referee whose task it is to describe the situations that the remaining people (the players) face. The situations described are often based loosely upon themes made popular at the cinema, on television or in books. Examples are Lord of the Rings, Star Wars, James Bond, X-files and Indiana Jones. The common denominator between all these being that they are fantasy situations and the players will be playing the part of characters
26
Although run by volunteers from gaming groups in Christchurch and Poole purely for the not at all serious purpose of gaming, the convention does have a serious side, since it has, during this time, contributed around £90,000 to various charities (including £13,000 this year). This year “Help for Heroes” and “Round Table Children’s’ Wish” were the main benefactors. For further information about the convention or local role-playing clubs please contact: Andrew Mussell (01202) 479959 If you would like to read more about Conception then go to www.conceptionuk.org If you are interested in having a Star Wars Clone or Stormtrooper attend a charitable event you are running please contact evadafobos@ntlworld.com

You can find out more about the friends’ activities at: www.friendsofchristchurchstation.bravehost.com
A
s Volunteer Coordinator, I match ‘people with time to spare’ to local volunteering opportunities. Volunteers come from a wide variety of backgrounds and circumstances: employed people, people looking for work, retired people, people with family commitments… There is something for everyone to get involved in whatever their skills, interests or experience.
Ready for the off! – Strollers ready to be led by walk leaders Marion Slade and Pauling Sly (kneeling from left)
Regular walks, led by trained walk leaders, are held throughout the year to encourage people to use nearby open spaces for physical activity in the company of other people and at their own pace! Walks last from 40-60 minutes. Why not put your best foot forward and join the Strollers? Those people newly resolved to doing more walking are very welcome. The Strollers meet at the following locations and times in May: From Saxon Square (outside Oswald Bailey) 10.30am on Wed 5 May
From left: Karen Hawley, Rob Griffith and Yvette Turney
Soon after taking up my role, I was delighted to see the number of people wishing to become volunteers, soaring. Inevitably, this had an impact on my time – I just needed some help! Karen Hawley and Yvette Turney were both looking for support roles and when they met me to discuss how their skills could be utilised, I knew immediately how they could be put to good use and become an essential part our Christchurch Volunteering team! Of course my role and our volunteering team would not have been possible without Christchurch Community Partnership as sponsor of this work. Christchurch Community Partnership is the local independent charity that brings together individuals and organisations that want to improve the quality of life of those people who live in, work in and visit Christchurch. In response to community needs and aspirations, the partnership’s creative and enthusiastic volunteers have developed and continue to develop a broad range of practical and innovative projects to benefit the community; here are just some of them:

From Highcliffe cliff car park (at Café) 1.30am on Mon 10 May From Civic Offices (by notice board) 10.30am on Fri 21 May To find out more, please contact Julia Whelan on 01202 495017 As you may know, the existing Druitt Hall is not what it was when it was built as a ‘temporary’ community structure back in 1953. Nevertheless, there is still the need for a ‘hub’ for individuals and local organisations to meet, exchange information and hold activities, and much more… in the centre of Christchurch. Christchurch Community Partnership has led on designing and raising funds for a building to meet the needs of Christchurch in the 21st century. To date, £100,000 has been raised through successful applications to Trusts and from sterling fund raising work by people in the community, but there’s still more to be done… If you want to add your enthusiasm for and/or experience of fund raising to ours, we’d like to hear from you – my contact details appear below. If you have some spare time and would like to become a volunteer then please contact Rob Griffith on 07907 868377, email: r.griffith@christchurch.gov.uk or come in and meet the team at the Regent Centre, Christchurch – we’re there every Wednesday from 10am to 3pm. You could also visit the website www.christchurchmatters.org and find out more about the partnership’s activities, events and meetings to which all are welcome. You too could make a difference in our community!
