The last weekend of this month sees one of Christchurch’s largest events of the year, and I think it’s probably my favourite event locally too - The Christchurch Cheryl Christmas Festival. So, pop a note in your diary to reserve Saturday 29th November for the whole day as the festivities begin from 10am with a Christmas market in the High Street selling a variety of food, drink and Christmas gifts, then go on to enjoy a whole programme of events through to 7pm that evening, more details and times can be found on page 19. Don’t forget to pop into the local shops too whilst you’re there, they can sometimes be forgotten about on market days and they are so important to the local economy, so please don’t forget them! In fact, why not make it your mission to pop into a shop that you’ve not been in before or for a very long time just to see what’s in there? You never know, you may be pleasantly surprised and find something fabulous for that special someone or maybe even spoil yourself. Or why not try somewhere else to eat or drink? Step outside of your ‘norm’ and try something new – try it, you might like it! Cheryl Cheryl Dennett Editor & Publisher

A
new “Town Centre Strategy Plan” has been issued by Christchurch Borough Council. Have you seen it yet? Eleven years have elapsed since the last plan, which produced few concrete results. The intention this time is to be less “grandiose”.
*"#+,-%.,#/01,2%34+ Peter
One applauds the plan’s overall proposal, which is “to celebrate Christchurch’s heritage assets and encourage economic growth”. Improving access to the town’s heritage buildings, making more of the Mayor’s Parlour, better signage for car parks and improving streetfurniture are all to be commended. But what about the main roads? The plan avoids any suggestion of pedestrianisation, but suggests widening footpaths and, at three crucial points (the Mayor’s Parlour, the Regent Centre and the Kings Arms), levelling the pavements and turning them into a continental-style area that has traffic calming benefits. A similar approach is suggested for Castle Street leading to the Priory. The sketches show a great visual improvement.
!""#$%&'()%#*+,'-)$.'+#%*(/#$%0 !"#$"%&'(()*$ +,-..%&'(()*$ /0-*()*$ 12,#",%3-)*("*-*&"% +-,#"*%&0"-,-*&" 4"(%5-.6)*$ /-()2%&0"-*)*$ +'((",.%&0"-,)*$ 7,""%52,8 12'-#34#5'$-%#'6&'-7'+('#7+#8$-,'+7+9#:#;$+,%($&7+9< ='#($)'-#>?-#?+'#?>>#9$-,'+7+9#&-?@'()%#A/7(/#($+#7+("*,'#)/'# ,'%79+#$+,#B*7",#?>#%?>)#$+,#/$-,#"$+,%($&',#9$-,'+%<## ='#$"%?#?>>'-#-'9*"$-#C$7+)'+$+('#(?+)-$()%< /62*"9%:;<=;%=:>?@? A3-)09%3-,8B3-,8(-C02,$-,#"*.",D)&".E&2E'8 F"G.)("9%555E3-,8(-C02,$-,#"*.",D)&".E&2E'8
The plan also identifies difficulties with Fountain Roundabout and proposes that crossroads are the answer. The question, surely, is the practicality of these suggestions, given the vast volume of traffic (including the many buses) that use the main roads and roundabout. How is it to be paid for? The proposal is for significant development in our three main car parks involving building 116 new apartments (but somehow not reducing the parking spaces). There are no sketches showing how these proposals will look! Sadly the plan takes no note of the forthcoming major development on the site of the Police Station and has no suggestions as to how that could be incorporated into the town. But, it is only a consultation and the Council are keen for your views so do go and look for yourself at www. dorsetforyou.com/christchurch-town-centre-strategy and let the Council know what you think.

An English Mum
O
nce bonfire night is over, I consider it is officially safe to mention the ‘C’ word without any shouts of ‘Too early!’ Yes, Rachel Christmas is just around the corner, and the end of this month brings my personal favourite of all the Christchurch festivals - the big Christmas Light Switch-on! For my family, it starts with the excitement of running to the end of our road (with seconds to spare) in order to follow the Father Christmas procession as he is pulled along in his sleigh by his gorgeous (if ever so slightly stinky), real, live reindeer! Excited children trot along behind the sleigh as he slowly makes his way through Bargates into the town centre, ready to attempt to switch the lights on outside the Mayor’s Parlour. I say ‘attempt’ as it has not always been straightforward, with occasional years of wind, rain and technical problems to throw a spanner in the works! The atmosphere in the town is a lovely, family experience, with smaller kids sitting on parents’ shoulders and older kids hanging off lampposts in order to catch a glimpse of the infamous Mr Christmas! After the suspense of the countdown to the big switch-on, the festivities continue with stalls of food and gifts, shops open late and a steady procession of kids down to the Priory where they can queue up to meet Father Christmas and feed the reindeer. (They really do smell bad, but are incredibly cute!). After enjoying the festivities, I personally like to finish the evening with a bag of hot chestnuts to munch on the way home. It really is the perfect start to the Christmas season — wrap up warm, and I hope to see you there! An English Mum x

Christchurch Christmas Festival - Saturday 29th November
T
his year’s Christchurch Christmas Festival takes place on Saturday 29 November and, as last year, we have a whole day of Christmas fun and activities taking place throughout the town. The Christmas market in the High Street will take place from 10am to 7pm with a variety of food, drink and Christmas gifts for sale. There will be a full programme of music and entertainment throughout the day in Saxon Square and other locations along within the Town. Santa and his reindeer will fly into Peeks Partystore car park in Reid Street at 4.00pm and will process down Bargates to arrive in the High Street at 4.30pm. Santa will then take his reindeer down to the Priory Church where the reindeer can be petted and children can hand in their Christmas wish letters. The Christmas lights switch-on will take place in the High Street at the later time of 6pm. A photography competition for the borough’s three secondary schools will take place with prizes awarded for the best images of the Christmas Festival.

1000km Ride between our twin towns!
A
Christchurch man has recently returned from a 650 mile cycling adventure between two of our twin towns.
Steve Haynes, a trustee of Christchurch Citizens Advice Bureau rode a singlespeed, fold up bike from Stuttgart in Germany to Budapest in Hungary, dropping by to see our friends in Aalen and Tatabanya along the way. Most of the journey was alongside the beautiful River Danube - just as well as with no gears to call upon and a small bike stacked up with camping gear, hills were a particularly tough proposition!
Steve
In Aalen, Germany, he met up with the mayor and Hannah from the local twinning group and had a tour of the lovely medieval town centre whilst under the watchful eye of the “Aalen spy”. Looking down from the church tower, this mechanised head reflects the story from the middle ages when a spy was dispatched to head off an impending war. When he was discovered, he humorously admitted he was “a spy from Aalen”, and for his naïve honesty the town was spared! Aalen also has some interesting Roman remains as it was on the key defensive lines at the northern edge of the empire. It also has an historic mining complex. After leaving Aalen, Steve rode through one of the largest meteor craters on earth and stopped at Nordlingen, where the buildings are made of stone containing millions of microscopic diamonds. The huge pressure of the impact, 4.5 million years ago, fused the granite causing the minute gems to form. Flowing 3000 miles across Europe, the Danube is the continent’s longest river and Steve spent the next 8 days riding alongside through amazing scenery, across Germany and Austria to Vienna, then to Bratislava and on through Slovakia to the Hungarian border. Eurovelo 6 (a cross Europe cycle route) also took him up into the Wachau wine growing region, where vineyards stretched along the escarpments as far as the eye could see, and the winding cycle route was dotted with ruined castles, including the one at Durnstein where Richard the Lionheart was imprisoned. A long way east, just 30 miles off the Danube, lies Tatabanya, another of Christchurch’s twin towns. Set in a an area of magnificent hills, the town is overlooked by the largest bronze bird statue in the world, the mighty Turul.
Prato Park, Vienna
In legend, this bird led the founders of Hungary to their land. Steve met up with Susie, a teacher at the local school and her family, and explored the sights whilst enjoying the terrific hospitality they offered - which was most welcome after almost 2 weeks alone in a one man tent! Tatabanya has a great museum showcasing its mining history and is a great base for visiting the lakes of the region.
Cycling alongside the Blue Danube 20 ChristchurchEYE
The final leg of his journey was on to Budapest, the spectacular capital of Hungary. Steve arrived in the early evening when the fantasy architecture was washed with intense yellow lights, its buildings appearing to float magically on the river like great ocean liners. The next day he celebrated the completion of his ride beneath the Statue of Victory, a huge installation by the Soviets after World War 2 that overlooks the city from a surrounding hill. Lifting his small bike above his head he was able to reflect on the trip – he had travelled through 4 countries and over 1000km, pedalling over 1 million strokes, on a little fold up cycle more suited to popping round the shops. Raising funds to help local people! It was a great adventure, which also raised funds to support Christchurch Citizen’s Advice Bureau. This fantastic organisation helps over 1000 people in the local area each year, offering friendly, professional advice when it is most needed. Each bureau is an independent charity and Christchurch relies on grants from the Borough Council and others, plus charitable fundraising efforts. Through the ride, Steve has so far raised around £1000 - if you would like to help him support the bureau you can visit www.justgiving.com/ danubechallenge. Steve would like to specifically thank the following local companies for their support of his fundraising:

You could help as a volunteer advisor, or alternatively the CAB has an opening for an additional Trustee Director. Private Rented Housing Demand for private rented housing is set to explode over the next five years and Government will need to work closer than ever before with the professional lettings industry, to meet the challenges of a burgeoning population. It is also estimated that up to one million more renters will be looking for homes in the next five years - adding to a rental market that has already doubled in the past 20 years and is expected to double again over the next two decades.
Jeremy
There is going to be immense pressure to provide much needed quality private rented housing alongside owner occupied homes. Government will need to be creative in its support of landlords and the private rented sector to accommodate the housing needs allied to this unprecedented growth,” says Jeremy Clarke of Belvoir. Jeremy, who owns the Belvoir Office in Christchurch, says: “Existing Government schemes such as the Build to Rent initiative, designed to stimulate new private rented housing supply & attract institutional investment, are to be applauded but in my view our industry, in general, doesn’t know a lot about it and there has been no wide scale engagement with lettings agents. “Such schemes present an opportunity for lettings agents to work with developers to provide much needed rental stock for the buy to let market which not only continues to grow at a very fast rate, but also looks set to carry on doing so well into the future.” However, Jeremy believes there is also an immediate danger to existing housing stock following statements made by Labour Party, which many industry experts consider both ill-conceived and unworkable. “Proposed changes such as the introduction of rental caps and statutory long term rental agreements could discourage new landlords from investing in property and encourage existing buy to let investors to sell up due to increased costs. Alternatively they could be forced to pass those costs onto tenants. Far from being ‘protected’, tenants would be much worse off. Furthermore I believe that the proposals will only help rogue landlords and agents to introduce higher rents by the back door. “ Jeremy says: “The best way to maintain stimulus for a fair private rented sector is to establish a centralised regulator, since good regulation separates rogue agents from the herd; recognises the difference and forces them out of the market. The remaining good ones are encouraged to provide quality housing solutions and services in which we all take great professional pride. Self-regulating lettings agencies, such as Belvoir, already provide high levels of service, expertise and professionalism and we believe we lead the way in this area and our record on transparency is second to none.” Belvoir, along with all other reputable agents, wants to see Government bring in regulation for the entire sector - but it is essential that we, along with other professional bodies, are given the opportunity to help shape the future of such regulation so that both tenants and landlords can be assured of a high quality and transparent service in the future. It is essential to get it right first time. Jeremy Clarke, Belvoir 01202 588920

On The Water
I
f you go anywhere near the water in Christchurch you will see people with fishing rods, but there is a lot more going on just below the surface! Due to John the variety of local rivers this is one of the most diverse areas in the UK for fish. Reference was made to a Royal Fishery at Christchurch in 939AD. Currently Sembcorp Bournemouth Water have arrangements with fisheries and angling associations to ensure good management of the fish and waters running through Christchurch. Christchurch has a rich fishing heritage but unless you go out of your way you will not see some of the best spots. Driving into Christchurch you catch a glimpse of the River Avon, flowing behind St Catherine’s Hill, which attracts highly prized game fish including trout and salmon. Just behind Bargates is the Royalty Fishery, one of England’s most famous mixed coarse and game angling venues. The Fishery is steeped in angling history having produced record barbel, chub, pike and salmon. You can walk there but be aware that the fishery is within a conservation area and all wildlife is actively managed. The River Stour that flows through Christchurch is a typical muddy river and coarse fishing is good along its banks for species including mullet, dace, roach, perch and eels. If you like exploring the most attractive sections of the Stour are above Iford Bridge. There is access to walk along riverbank footpaths, but keep in mind that anglers appreciate not being disturbed. ‘Catch & Release’ is now the usual practice for most sport fisheries around the world. Local anglers have a healthy respect for fish and this approach helps to maintain so many species in Christchurch waters. See you on the water!

Once again it has been brought to our notice that there is congestion at the bus stop near Waitrose on the days that the High Street is closed causing the traffic to back up to the Fountain Roundabout as two lanes filter into one to manoeuvre around parked buses. With all the expensive car park signs that have been put in place to supposedly alleviate the traffic flow we feel that some of the money could have been spent on creating a lay-by for buses to pull in therefore allowing vehicles to keep flowing.

Concern has been raised over the fact that Christchurch Police Station is to close. We were told that the station would be based at Ferndown, now we hear that this is also to close. With a high elderly population many residents feel very insecure without a Police presence in the town. We understand that Bridport is able to keep its full time enquiry office. This is something that we will be investigating. The Town Centre Strategy plans have now been on show if you missed the councils display, and are interested in the future of Christchurch please contact the CCA and we will send you a short summary of the proposals. We would be pleased to have your comments. November this year will be the 70th anniversary of the CCA and to mark this auspicious occasion we are going to hold a special social celebration on Monday December 1st in Druitt Hall at 7.30pm when we will welcome members past and present to a small buffet and a glass of wine. Garden View Hedging your Bets!
Lee
Ok, so it’s a terrible heading, but November is the perfect time for planting new hedges, and at this time of year it’s a very safe bet. Prior to the use of containerised plants (which can be planted at almost any time of the year) planting between November and March was a gardeners only option, and as far as the plants are concerned it’s still the best by far. When plants are dormant (asleep) they will hardly even notice being moved, and by spring when their new leaves emerge their roots will have already pushed through the surrounding soil in their new home. Hedges are often thought of as hard work, time consuming and have been at the centre of heated neighbourly debates (whether it’s cutting them too low or letting them grow too high). They are great for blocking out unsightly views, adding privacy, and also make a wonderful place for wildlife to live, rest and nest. For the past 3 years we’ve had a variety of birds nesting in our Yew hedge and the addition of extra life in the garden always pleases me. If you’re looking for a quick solution to a green screen, then you have two options, either instant (such as a 2m high instant hedge, pre grown, trained and clipped, perfect for the impatient gardener), or Leylandii conifers. As I write this I can hear the screams, but it really is the best option for speed and it’s cost-effective. Do be aware that legally, as of a couple of years ago, you have to keep its growth contained to 2m high if on a boundary (this does not apply to any other species). For the more patient gardener, try the classic evergreen Yew hedging. Like most beautiful things in life, it’s more expensive to buy. It’s also slower growing (15-30cm per year), but does only require cutting once per year in September, and will provide you with the most beautiful hedge. I also favour the evergreen Portuguese laurel, which has a smaller leaf than the more common cherry laurel, or Beech if it doesn’t need to be evergreen. For a smaller hedge it has to be Box, but alternatives include Lavender, Berberis, Lonicera, and for the perfect no-cut low hedge go for a small Hebe, (simply choose a variety which only grows to the height you actually want the hedge to grow to). Happy Winter Gardening
By Lee Bestall 34 ChristchurchEYE
How to prepare for your Hedge Whichever hedge you choose, the ground preparation should be the same. For containerised, bare-root or root-balled hedges, dig out a trench which follows the line of the proposed hedge, this should be at least one and a half times wider and deeper than the rootball. Fork over the base of the trench and return some of the soil, so that when you plant the hedge it sits at the same level as previously planted (i.e. not too deep). Backfill with the removed soil, add a handful of bonemeal per plant, and dig in. Firm with your boot then water well before mulching with 5cm of compost, manure or bark clippings.

Christchurch Scouts NOT JUST ABOUT KNOTS The Christchurch 7 fundraising at a local supermarket Scouting holds so many opportunities; it’s not all about tying knots, as you may think. In fact, scouting is about meeting new people, learning and respecting other cultures, places, languages, and religions. Let us tell you, we are not knot crazy. Scouting is layered with opportunities, one being the famous jamborees (held every four years). In July 2015 it is being held in Japan, one of the most populated countries in the world! This experience is life changing, with meeting new people from around the world, learning different cultures, beliefs, the chance to stay with a Japanese family, hiking, water sports, trying new foods, travelling to new places and so much more. 30,000 scouts and guides and 20,000 volunteers will be attending this 12 day camp. But, wait, we’ve jumped right into the deep end. We’ve forgotten one of the most important factors. As a starting point, a total of 140 scouts attended a selection camp hoping they would be chosen to be part of the 23rd Dorset (Brownsea) Unit. This camp was fun but very tiring. They called the lucky ones, who had been selected, the night we left the camp and instantly, there were 36 screaming teenagers; the excitement was uncontainable. So, we’ve all embarked on this crazy journey and it’s only becoming wilder as we jump the next hurdle. We say hurdle because it’s been hard (and tiring) but nothing will feel more rewarding as standing in Japan, knowing that we all worked hard and managed to raise that £3,300 fundraising goal.

USE PEAR INSTEAD OF APPLE IN THESE INDIVIDUAL VERSIONS OF THE CLASSIC PUD WITH A CRUNCHY PISTACHIO TOPPING PREPARATION TIME: 10 MINS COOKING TIME: 35 MINS SERVES: 4
INGREDIENTS
4 large ripe English pears, peeled and cubed 100g golden granulated sugar 250g blackberries 200g plain flour 100g unsalted butter, cold, cut into small pieces 85g shelled pistachios, roughly chopped 100g demerara sugar ice cream or custard to serve (optional)
METHOD
Heat oven to 190C/fan 170C/gas 5. Place the pears in a medium-size pan, add the granulated sugar and cook on a medium heat until the fruit starts to soften and releases its juices, about 10 mins. Add the blackberries and bring back to the boil, then remove from the heat. Spoon the fruity mixture into 4 individual ovenproof ramekins, or 1 large baking dish. Place the flour, butter and a pinch of salt in a large bowl and rub together with your fingers until the mixture resembles coarse breadcrumbs. Add the pistachios and demerara sugar, then stir to combine. Sprinkle crumble evenly over the cooked fruit. This can be done up to 1 day ahead, or frozen for up to 1 month. Bake for 20-25 mins if small, 40 mins if large, until golden. If baking from frozen, add 15 mins cooking time. Remove from the oven, cool slightly, then serve with ice cream or custard, if you like.

Christchurch Rotary
T
he President of our club in Christchurch is President Colette Neaum. We asked Colette how she thought people view Rotary, her reply was “I think that the public view Rotarians as an aging bunch of do-gooders who collect money at Christmas Paul and put on the bonfire event at Stanpit Marsh. However, I believe that we are viewed quite favourably once the public realise that we do a lot besides this, both in the community and also worldwide.” Also, we asked Colette what she thought people would gain by membership - “Great fellowship, a strong sense of being part of a worldwide humanitarian organisation but at the same time an important part of our town. Being part of Rotary means that you are a member of the biggest charitable organisation in the world. We meet weekly to share ideas, hear guest speakers talk about a wide range of subjects and try to make the world a better place. Rotary does not discriminate by race or religion and helps everyone in times of need. Personally, I very much enjoy the company of club members and our many social activities.” Colette actively promotes commitment to the community and local schools, with competitions for children including ‘Young Chef’, ‘Youth Speaks’ and ‘Young Musician. Internationally, the club supports fundraising for Polio eradication and ‘Shelterbox’ disaster relief. Finally, we asked Colette how she would encourage people to become involved with Rotary? “ Speak to a Rotarian! Find out what we do, find out about being a member or a business partner, or sit in a comfy chair and go to the website.” www.rotary.org Our club meets at the Kings Hotel in Christchurch Club secretary is Dr. James Morton can be contacted by email on jamesrmorton42@gmail.com Membership committee through Vee Young on duckslanding@talktalk.net We look forward to seeing you soon.

I
’m Millie, a friendly, retired racing greyhound and my foster mum says I’m ready to homed. I am full of life and fun and have socialised with lots of other dogs. I’ve Millie shown no aggression whatsoever and don’t mind my foster parents taking my toys or touching my food. I love nothing better than playing in the sun, but always make sure I get a long snooze afterwards! I also play really well with children. I can’t wait to see what life is like outside of the kennel and finally meet my forever family.
