Happy New Year and Welcome.... Welcome to the new Southbourne Eye community magazine! It’s been an exciting few months here at Local Eye Mags HQ in preparation for the the launch of our new magazine covering this area. Some may have already heard about us as we have been producing the Christchurch Eye & Highcliffe Eye community magazines for some years now. We’ve been wanting to introduce a third magazine for some time and with so many of our customers requesting for us to cover the Southbourne area it seemed the most natural move as we are already good neighbours! Whilst the magazine is funded by our advertisers, we do concentrate our efforts on the local community content as we realise that the more interesting and informative our content is, the more likely it is that you’ll keep hold of our magazine until the next one arrives. We‘re all about ‘Keeping Trade Local’ and helping to boost the local economy. Together we can do this! Each month the magazine will feature some great columns written by local residents that we hope you enjoy. Most of our articles have a local connection, a favourite for most is sure to be our Tucktonia article that we will bring you throughout the whole of 2016, kindly written by Alex McKinstry; we kick off the year with 4-page pullout special. Other monthly columns include Local History by Hattie Miles, Teen column by Emilie Neville, Southbourne-on-Sea Traders Association by Clive Mace and Southbourne Surf Life Saving Club by Bill Ezekiel and I’m sure many others as time goes by. The magazine also features recipes, gardening articles, puzzles, kids page and local news. If anyone has read any of our other publications then you’ll know that we are very focussed on being truly community focused. I can’t believe that Christmas has come and gone. Even more shocking is the fact that our Christmas tree remained vertical and wasn’t pulled down by our new kitten Smudge. He certainly learnt how to unwrap presents, some of them before they should have been! Soon he will be allowed to venture outside which will be a scary day for all of us and as he returns, we will be ready for presents of mice and birds from the garden!
The Christmas spirit will continue into January as we go to see All Saints Dramatic Society’s performance of Aladdin at St Peter’s School. They have been performing fantastic pantos for many years and it is so lovely to have something to look forward to after all the excitement of Christmas.
Last month I took my Mum to the O2 Bournemouth to see Scouting For Girls. It was a fantastic evening and I hardly had a voice left in the morning after singing ‘She’s So Lovely’ and ‘Heartbeat’ at the top of my voice. Roy Stride was a great entertainer and even left the stage and surprised his fans by appearing in the balcony. I’m really looking forward to going to Wembley Arena to see Rhianna next June and was online at 9am the day the tickets went on sale. Naturally I’m going with my friend who has the same name! If you are out and about in Southbourne and fancy a break from shopping, pop into Pierre’s Patisserie in Woodside Road; they have a lovely selection of cakes that you can either eat in or take away. Over the past 12 months or so a lot of you will have noticed a new building being erected on the prom at the bottom of St Catherine’s path. This is our new club premises and is the result of many years of hard work to get the funding (mostly from Sport England) and the necessary permissions so we end up with a suitable design. The new facility will not only mean that we have room to store all of our equipment but it also incorporates a 40m2 dry training room so we can hold first aid courses for our members as well as for the wider community. We are still fundraising to add the finishing touches but hope to be fully operational before next summer.
So now you know who we are, I’m going to mention what I hope to write about in the months to come. Some of our members are also involved in Flood Rescue as part of Wessex Flood Rescue so as the weather in February is more likely to be wet than dry we will be giving advice on how to stay safe around inland floods. As we approach the summer we will then give advice and news about the Club and what our members have achieved.

So who are Southbourne Surf Lifesaving Club? Well, we have 150 members aged from 7 to 70(ish) and have been around since 1986. We train young people in lifesaving and lifeguarding skills in a beach environment and we provide first aid and safety cover on the beach during the summer. We aren’t the RNLI but are an independent charity affiliated to Surf Life Saving GB. Many of our senior members have been trained by the club and gone on to work for the RNLI as beach lifeguards so there is the link!!

Douglas Mews is an unassuming road of relatively new-build properties, but venture down the close and you will find a strange looking block of flats with a rather magnificent double external staircase leading to its first floor entrance. This is all that remains of Stourfield House, a Georgian mansion, built in 1766 by a wellconnected man called Edmund Bott, a barrister, who in 1771 published a collection of cases relating to the Poor Law. The house was set in 140 acres of grounds overlooking the Stour valley. Stourfield House was huge, and in 1894 became a grammar school, and later a sanatorium for consumptive patients. In 1991 the building was demolished, apart from the steps and entrance. Its most celebrated resident arrived in 1796. Mary Bowes, countess of Strathmore, lived there during the final years of her life. She was a colourful character and considered thoroughly eccentric. Mary was the only child of Sir George Bowes, a wealthy businessman and mine owner from Durham. He died suddenly leaving Mary, then 11, his fortune, and making her the richest child in Britain. At 18, Mary married John Lyn, 9th Earl of Strathmore. They had five children, though the marriage was said to be an unhappy one, as the couple had little in common. Mary had various dalliances with other men and when John Lyn died in 1776 she found she was pregnant by a lover. A marriage was quickly arranged, but there was another suitor - widowed sea captain Andrew Robinson Stoney, a handsome man who, unbeknown to Mary, had abused his first wife. He seduced Mary and set out to discredit
her reputation with her future husband. He planted anonymous stories about her in The Morning Post newspaper, Hattie and then challenged the editor to a duel to defend her honour. The whole thing was a con, but the result was that Mary married the sea captain. He was a horrible, manipulative man and set out to control her every movement in what was a ghastly eight years of marriage. Mary had made provision that her children would inherit her fortune, but in finding this out, Stoney became violent and even more abusive. Astonishingly in those days it was quite legal for a man to beat his wife. Eventually things got so bad that Mary, with the help of loyal servants, managed to escape. A furious Stoney began stalking her. His outrageous behaviour eventually resulted in his arrest and imprisonment. Mary attempted to divorce him, a historic case that would inspire campaigners in the battle for women’s rights. Four years later Mary moved to Stourfield House with her servants where she chose to live a reclusive life. Her main companions were her pet dogs. She had hot meals cooked for them daily and places laid for them at her table. Her last will and testament was witnessed by trusted friends from Pokesdown Village and included a legacy to the widow Lockyer of Pokesdown Farm. When she died in April 1800, undertakers came from London to take her by horse-drawn hearse to Westminster Abbey where she was buried in Poets’ Corner wearing a court dress, with all the accessories necessary for a Royal audience. Mary was the great, great, great, great grandmother of the Queen.

TUCKTONIA: A FRESH INTRODUCTION Written by Alexander McKinstry
There was a time, not long ago in fact, when every major historical British monument could be found at Christchurch. The site of this cultural cynosure was the Tuckton Golf and Leisure Park off Stour Road, and the monuments formed part of a model landscape dubbed ‘Tucktonia’ – occupying four of the site’s twenty-one acres, though ‘Tucktonia’ is the name by which the entire leisure park tends to be remembered. Last year, I wrote a series of columns for Christchurch Eye on the history of Tucktonia and, given the interest generated by these articles, we have decided to re-run them for residents on the Bournemouth side of the river. The site’s origins were rooted in the Tuckton Golf School, opened in 1932 by Arthur Vine, an affable cove in plus-fours, who laid out a driving range on the low-lying meadowland here – adding a set of floodlights in 1956, making this the first floodlit golf course in the UK. In 1961 the freehold was purchased by Harry Stiller, a young motorsports fanatic, who had become Arthur’s business partner after arriving in Bournemouth three years previously. One of Harry’s first acts was to secure a drinks licence for the site’s clubhouse, which was promptly renamed The Golfers’ Arms, with a racing car built into the wall and sixteen ales on draught at any one time. The business then ticked over while Harry focused on his Formula Three career: he was British champion three years in a row, but retired from the sport in 1968, after two successive accidents test-driving tyres. It was at this point that Harry turned his efforts to transforming the club into a full-blown entertainments complex, the one thing, he felt, that the Bournemouth area was lacking. The Golfers’ Arms was assigned to Watney’s Brewery on a 99-year lease, partly to fund the new attractions; these included an outdoor swimming pool, a miniature railway, crazy golf, a 35-ft. fun slide or ‘Astroglide’, and a go-karting circuit run like a mini-Indianapolis (there was no age limit, so long as the driver’s foot was capable of reaching the brake pedal). These features in place, the site reopened as the Tuckton Golf and Leisure Park in 1972, though Harry was still looking for a special ingredient to catapult the site to attention. It so happened that, around that time, a business acquaintance suggested he visit the Madurodam model village in The Hague – ‘and the moment I set foot there,’ says Harry today, ‘I knew this was exactly the sort of thing I wanted to bring to Christchurch.’ The result was the miniature landscape, Tucktonia, assembled on the flood plain at the back of the site: this had to be raised by more than 2 ft. to gain planning consent, which meant draining 18 • Southbourne Eye • January 2016
the area, filling it with 18,000 tons of hardcore and 2,500 tons of concrete, then topping it with 12,500 tons of earth. This took place after numerous clashes with the river and town planning authorities, which resulted in Harry selling the site to Grand Metropolitan Hotels Ltd. – though he agreed to stay on for a year as consultant in the project. Harry’s idea was that Tucktonia would embody ‘the best of British in miniature’, incorporating models of Stonehenge, Hadrian’s Wall, the Tower of London, St. Paul’s, the Palace of Westminster and the cream of Britain’s industry, with cars tootling along the miniature motorway and Concorde taking off hourly from Tucktonia Airport. Everything was built to a 1:24 scale, right down to the pigeons surrounding Nelson’s column, or the graffiti on the model railway station wall.
The grand opening of Tucktonia took place on 23 May 1976, with Arthur Askey presiding – an inspired choice, as even he towered over most of the exhibits. As the years went by, further fixtures were added: in 1978 an army helicopter was brought in to lower a 26-ft. model of the
Post Office Tower, the site being so densely packed by this stage that there was no other way of putting it in place. That particular model cost £7,000 to build and, like its life-size counterpart, was equipped with a rotating restaurant section, turning at a rate of eight revolutions per hour. Inevitably, the cost of maintaining the models was high, and the site would close each winter to allow the work to be carried out – though the indoor amusements palace remained open, generating a trickle of income. sold it to a new local company, Tucktonia Ltd., in 1983. (Peter Arnold, who had been running some of the rides as a sub-contractor, was appointed managing director.) This company did its best to turn the leisure park into an all-year-round attraction – it was Peter, for instance, who installed a haunted house under the fun-slide stairs (‘I put my mother-in-law in charge of it’) – but it ran into several difficulties, such as resistance from the local residents’ association, and limited room to expand. The company therefore decided to relocate and sold the site, for a reported £10 million, to Costain Homes, pending the 130-home residential development known as The Meridians. Site clearance began in October 1986, the Tucktonia flag – a chirpy robin, with a Union Jack breast – fluttering above the debris at half-mast.
Attempts at re-establishing the leisure park at various other locations never came to fruit, not least because most of the Tucktonia models were destroyed in a warehouse fire at Verwood in 1990 – though Buckingham Palace escaped the flames, and is now on display at the Merrivale Model Village in Great Yarmouth. Tucktonia Ltd., meanwhile, was dissolved on 19 February 1992, and even the Golfers’ Arms eventually succumbed to the wrecking-ball. Since then, the days of Christchurch’s only leisure park have become a fond but increasingly distant memory. Over the next few months we will be tracing the rise and fall of the site here in the pages of Southbourne Eye, and interviewing some of the key figures involved in bringing this remarkable attraction to our doorstep. Members of ASDS are preparing for two packed months, even by their own standards. Their annual Awards’ Dinner Dance comes hot on the heels of another firmly established part of their programme, the Carol Concert at All Saints’ Church in Southbourne, a joint venture with Verwood Concert Brass, to which they invite members of their enormously successful Patrons’ Scheme. Members, aged from 16 to over 80, are busy rehearsing, along with their children’s chorus, twice-weekly for January’s seven performances of the pantomime, ‘Aladdin’, at St Peter’s School’s impressive De La Salle Theatre, on St Catherines Road, Southbourne, between January 15th and 23rd. Those who enjoyed last January’s ‘Sleeping Beauty’ and 2014’s musical, ‘Scrooge’, will be looking forward to more highly enjoyable family entertainment. The Society, founded in 1951, performed for its first twenty years at the hall of its mother church. Following the loss of their first home to arson in 1971, they moved theatres several times before settling at the De La Salle, where they have continued to provide amateur theatre with professional values and to delight and impress audience and critics alike since 1996. Their January show is one of three major productions each year, along with those in spring and late summer. They thank their patrons with a free mid-year evening of one-act plays or similar entertainment – an old time music hall in 2014. After forming their own choir three years ago, they also presented a second sold-out and hugely successful evening of songs from stage and screen at Boscombe’s Shelley Theatre in July, 2015. Members meet and rehearse on Tuesday and Thursday evenings, in addition to which there is a lively and varied programme of social activities, including theatre trips. Unlike some societies, all members are expected to contribute to all aspects of productions, from acting, directing and producing, through a range of backstage and technical roles, to helping front of house. HOW DOES YOUR GARDEN GROW? GARDENING RESOLUTIONS
I’m a sucker for resolutions. I make loads every year though I have to admit I break most of them too. But it’s January and time for a spot of gardening self-improvement. To this end here are my gardening resolutions. 1. I will take a daily walk around my plot and pull out a few weeds as I go. I will not wait until I can’t stick a pin between the dandelions.
Let’s face it gardeners are great procrastinators. But by doing a little and often we can keep our plots looking spick and span. 2. I will not leave seed sowing until it’s too late! This is my personal nemesis. I get carried away by all the glorious seed catalogues, order dozens of packets then pop them in a drawer and forget about them.
3. I will plant all the plants I buy from a nursery as soon as a get them home and definitely before their flowers drop off and they turn up their little green toes. Plants bought from a nursery, especially those in cell pack, are already in less than ideal conditions and letting them dehydrate further will make for a sick, leggy plant more prone to disease. Preparation is the key here. I will make sure I have the correct pots, enough potting compost and the time to spare before I buy. 4. I will clean my gardening tools at the end of each day spent gardening.
This is sensible because dirty tools can spread disease. Mild bleach (one part bleach to 10 parts water) or an organic cleaner, which I prefer, will make sure they’re ready for use next time. 5. I will buy another water butt and water my plants faithfully, particularly my pots. Lack of water produces weak root systems. If I know I won’t have the time I’ll invest in an irrigation system. 6. I will start another compost bin. it’s not difficult and will help the environment as I’ll be able to recycle even more of my waste vegetable matter. There are small drums and bins which will suit even the tiniest spot. 7. I will help wildlife by making sure I provide habitats for birds, bugs and beasties.
Any effort I put in will be repaid tenfold. A garden is a little ecosystem. If it functions well there will be natural pest control, pollination and soil conditioning. Those are my resolutions. You may have different ones and that’s fine. I’m sure we’ll break a few along the way but no-one said the path to perfection, particularly gardening perfection was easy.

Basic tomato and basil sauce for pasta This is a really easy pasta sauce recipe - vary the flavour by adding different ingredients (see top recipe tip below).
INGREDIENTS 3 tbsp extra virgin olive oil 1 large onion, chopped 2 garlic cloves, crushed 3 x 400g cans of chopped tomatoes ¼ - ½ tsp dried chilli flakes 2 tsp balsamic vinegar 2 tsp sugar 1 large handful basil leaves, torn into small pieces Salt and freshly ground black pepper Grated parmesan cheese, to serve (optional)

INSTRUCTIONS
Heat the oil in a saucepan and gently cook the onion and garlic until softened. Stir in the tomatoes, chilli flakes, balsamic vinegar and sugar. Bring to a simmer and cook slowly for 45 minutes-1 hour. Stir in the basil and season with salt and pepper. This can be left chunky or blended in a food processor for a smooth sauce. Serve spooned over cooked pasta with plenty of parmesan cheese.

Substitute the following as you prefer: - 250g/9oz tub of mascarpone or cream cheese, either alone or with strips of smoked salmon chopped black olives and marinated artichokes - fried bacon and mushrooms - prawns, capers and chopped parsley - chopped chicken, red onion and red peppers, fried in olive oil - fried slices of chorizo sausage, chopped black olives and pieces of mozzarella cheese.
