Welcome.... Thank you so much to the many of you that have written in to say how much you’ve enjoyed reading the first edition of Southbourne Eye last month, it makes all our hard work worthwhile to hear that. If you have any community information that you would like shared with community members in the BH6 area then do please email us and we will do our best to share your news. We are very focussed on being truly community focused. Each month we feature a What’s On Guide and Clubs, Classes, Groups & Societies listings for BH6. For anyone wishing to contribute an event or club/ class to these pages it’s completely free and can be done via our website at www.localeyemagazines.co.uk. Whilst the magazine is funded by our advertisers, we do concentrate our efforts on the local community content as we realise that the more interesting and informative our content is, the more likely it is that you’ll keep hold of our magazine until the next one arrives. We‘re all about ‘Keeping Trade Local’ and helping to boost the local economy. Together we can do this! Dates for your diary this month include Shrove Tuesday on 9th and Valentine’s Day on the 14th. Shrove Tuesday is also often referred to as Pancake Day, Fat Tuesday and Mardi Gras which is French for ‘Fat Tuesday’! An interesting little fact that I didn’t know until researching this today so thought I’d share with you! We’ve a fabulous pancake recipe for you to try this month on page 28 and are really easy ones to make with the kids too! Valentine’s Day is on the 14th and what better time to support your local shops? We’re very fortunate to have many interesting gift shops here in Southbourne selling an abundance of wonderful gifts for both men and women. We also have a vast array of wonderful cafés, bistros and restaurants in the town if a romantic candlelit dinner is on the cards, book early to avoid disappointment. Shopping and dining locally helps boost our local economy so therefore benefits us all! It’s a Leap year this year so don’t forget to add an extra day to the calendar this February. 29th February in a leap year is said to be the one day when a woman can propose to her partner! Please don’t forget to mention us when using any local services and trades advertised within these pages, as without them there would be no Southbourne Eye! Until next month, happy reading!

DO YOU SUFFER FROM RINGING IN YOUR EARS? Ringing in the ears or tinnitus, as it is medically known, is often described as a hissing, buzzing, chirping, whistling or a humming noise. Tinnitus is not a disease or illness, but is thought to be caused within a person’s own auditory pathway. About 10 per cent of adults in the UK experience mild tinnitus but up to one per cent have tinnitus that affects their quality of life.

Southbourne Surf Lifesaving Club
Well it’s 2016 and we are now in the middle of winter.
Well, what a British winter tries to be, unpredictable, Bill often wet and sometimes cold – a bit like summer! This month I’m going to talk about floods. Some members of Southbourne Surf Life Saving Club are also members of Wessex Flood Rescue Unit (WFRU). In December, WFRU was deployed to Carlisle and alongside other colleagues rescued 200 people and a St Bernard dog. Over Christmas and New Year we were also on standby to go to York.
So now for some useful stuff; we have a few rivers in the area, which could burst their banks in exceptional circumstances and should there be some extreme rainfall over a short period, roads can flood. High tides can also cause floods as well as prevent river water getting to the sea. Flood water is very dangerous. It’s full of all sorts of nasty bits and pieces and you can’t see the ground beneath your feet. If you trip and fall into flood water you may well swallow some and you don’t want to do that! Even if you do make it home safely you will be bringing flood water into your home. Drain covers can be washed away so they are an additional hazard. Even in your car you might not be safe. Shallow water, if it’s fast flowing, can easily push a small car off the road and getting stuck in a flood will mean a walk through the flood to safety (see above). If a sign says ‘Road Closed’ please obey it, not only will you put yourself in danger but you will also put your rescuers in danger and you’ll also get the bill for rescuing you!

Southbourne-on-Sea Business Association (SoSBA)
Now that we have sailed through the first part of winter and docked at the port of January, we now Clive find ourselves casting off in this romantic month of February.
Most of our traders agree that these seas were a little rocky with some bearing the full front of hurricane ‘Southbourne Road Improvements’ which didn’t help to build trade. Nine parking spaces on the high street were removed to facilitate a new bus stop position, road works seemed largely to blame for customers staying away from Southbourne in the daytime during parts of December and January although road works stopped for Christmas and restarted last month. We do have a lovely new pedestrian area with the pavement widened and an improved Junction on Wentworth Road, made user friendly in an attempt to improve road safety. February is the month of love so there’s no better excuse to browse the delights of our wonderful high street shops for that loving gift. Start with a romantic walk along the seafront and up through Fishermans’ Walk and into such quaint and quirky outlets like House Heaven, Nellie Mimosa or Tilly’s Gifts, not forgetting to pick up a card from Southbourne Cards. If looking for a romantic meal then no better place to eat than Quarters Kitchen & Bar, Larder House or Baffi’s. Our busy little high street is the pumping heart of Southbourne. Looking ahead, Southbourne road improvements will hopefully finish around the end of March.
Southbourne welcomes Brewhouse, who will open their doors on the old Malt & Hop site, no date has been given as yet but joins The Grove Tavern and The White Bear as public house offerings in the high street.
‘Wheels comes to Southbourne’ has been confirmed for the second year running for the beginning of June, in conjunction with our partners in Bournemouth Council events team and the Coastal Bid.
As a member of the SOSBA we are always keen to hear how we can represent the businesses of Southbourne, so if you are a business owner let us know or even better come to a meeting held at The Grove Tavern on the second Thursday of every month from 1pm. Further details can be found on our SOSBA website www.southbourne-on-sea.co.uk.

Local History by Hattie Miles - Frederick E. Smith walkingtalks.wordpress.com
It’s a tale of daring deeds, brave heroes and nailbiting drama, and everyone recognises the stirring *Ron Goodwin soundtrack. 633 Squadron, the 1964 World War II film, was a huge hit and the first aviation film to be shot in colour.
The Smith’s returned to England and settled in Southbourne, where he determinedly continued life as a writer.
It was the story of the destruction of a seemingly impregnable German fuel plant hidden in the Norwegian fjords. It used groundbreaking filming techniques to capture the flying action, with real Mosquito aircraft, as well as models.
I was lucky enough to photograph him during my years in the Daily Echo photographic department. I remember him as a softly spoken man. He showed me up to his office, which was full of agreeable clutter, with old film posters and framed photographs around the walls. He told me that one of his favourite research pastimes was sitting with a newspaper in a bar or café listening-in to conversations. It wasn’t so much what people said, more how they said it. He would take copious notes.
Of course in real life the squadron never existed it was the creation of an author who lived for more than fifty years, quietly writing away in his upstairs office at his home in Newstead Road, Southbourne. Frederick E. Smith was a prolific novelist who penned more than forty books, ten of them being war adventures about the mythical 633 Squadron. He also wrote sixty short stories. He was born in Hull in 1919 and served in the RAF from 1940. Fred didn’t exactly lead a quiet life and used many of his own experiences, including surviving a bite from a deadly black mamba, for his later novels. I understand he was also dangled out of an aircraft without a parachute at 6,000 feet, saved only by a wire caught round his ankle.
Hattie
He kept writing, right up to the end of his life. He died in April 2012, aged 93, having just sent the third volume of his autobiography The Final Absurdities to his publisher. The book, a tribute to Shelagh, who predeceased him by six years, was published the following November. *On 28th May, Bournemouth Symphony Orchestra are performing a Ron Goodwin Gala at the Bournemouth Pavilion in aid of the BSO Benevolent fund.
When he married Shelagh McGrath they went to live in her native South Africa for several years. There he decided he’d try to make go of being a writer. He would always research his subjects carefully and at one point even disguised himself so that he could experience at firsthand what life was like in the townships. The resulting novel Laws Be Their Enemy condemned apartheid and as a result was banned in South Africa until the 1990s. At the time Fred received death threats.

TUCKTONIA: THE DAYS BEFORE TUCKTONIA Written by Alexander McKinstry
Before embarking on our monthly history of Tucktonia, it may be worth considering the pedigree of the site itself, which for centuries formed part of the common land known as Portfield – a 290-acre stretch of meadow, stretching from the Stour at Tuckton as far north as Fairmile, with Iford Bridge at its western boundary. James Druitt, at a public meeting in 1855, said this land had been described as ‘arable’ in the reign of Edward the Confessor, and we know, from the records of the court leet at Christchurch, that locals had enjoyed the right to graze their livestock here since before the time of legal memory. This right was eventually extirpated by the Portfield Enclosure Award of 1878, which put the land into private ownership for housebuilding – though a large section towards the river was doled out to the Corporation and used as a stint ground for cattle, eventually being developed as playing fields for Twynham School. Stour Road was cut through this area in 1876, though it took some time for the fact to register with the local magistracy, as this report from The Christchurch Times, 15 April 1882, confirms: John Walker, hawker, of Christchurch, was charged with allowing his mare to stray in Stour Road, on the 6th inst. The Chairman: ‘Where is Stour Road?’ - The Clerk: ‘It is the road leading from the railway station to the river.’ - The Chairman: ‘Is it adopted?’ - The Clerk: ‘Yes, it was adopted some few years back under the Enclosure Act.’ - The Chairman (to the defendant): ‘You are fined 1s. and 4d. costs.’ The land on the west side of Stour Road, meanwhile, continued to be let to agriculturalists, despite the fact that it formed part of a flood plain: in 1888 we read that Richard Butler lost 100 tons of mangel-wurzel from the fields here, most of which had been lying in heaps ready for carting away. (A few tons were rounded up using boats from the Christchurch Quay area.) From 1908, the land was used as allotments by the French Gardening Company, but they, too, were flooded out after eight years, and migrated further along Stour Road, To advertise please call 01202 477214
to the site of the Douglas Avenue allotments. Thenceforth, the land lay fallow until it was acquired by Alfred Curling Hunter, who had cut the first stretch of Broadway in 1925 and was responsible for developing Brightlands and Broadlands Avenues. He envisaged laying out a small estate here, but in 1931 his company went into liquidation, whereupon Arthur Vine, a young professional golfer, began renting the land from the liquidator. The result was the Tuckton Golf School, which opened in 1932 and was distinguished by metal practice sheds fitted with mirrors, allowing novices to practise their swings even in wet weather. During World War Two the site was taken over by the Home Guard and used for exercises, but Vine resumed his hold of the site soon afterwards, laying out an 18-hole course and creating a second, 12-hole pitch and putt course, which, in summer months, was lit by eighteen 32-ft. pylons, allowing visitors to play long after nightfall. This was the first floodlit course in the country – Vine had welded and erected the lights himself, at a cost of £600 – and it duly impressed Harry Stiller, a semi-fanatic young golfer, when he arrived in Bournemouth in 1958. Before long the two men had entered into partnership – with results that were to completely transform these twenty-odd acres, as we shall see in our next issue. Alex McKinstry’s The History of Tuckton, 35,000 B.C. - 1926, is available from Natula Publications (http://natulapublications.co.uk/). HOW DOES YOUR GARDEN GROW? VALENTINE TREATS
What to get the gardener in your life this Valentine’s Day?
Want a romantic gift for your gardening Valentine? Forget the drooping daffs and jet-lagged lilies, flown halfway round the world and marked up to extortionate prices. For a gardener a real romantic gesture is one that will last longer than a few days. Some gardeners actually dislike cut flowers, and most gardeners are eco-friendly, so when you think of all the paper, yards of cellophane, and air-miles clocked up by exotic blooms, a living plant suddenly seems like a better option. Potted plants are more suggestive of permanent affection than a bunch of flowers anyway, and on a purely practical level, they give much better value for money! Jasmine, stephanotis and gardenias are fragrant and glamorous, or try a passionflower vine, wound round a heart-shaped support. What could be more romantic than that? We think of red roses as being the bloom of romance so what better than an entire bush of them that promises years of pleasure ahead. One problem with rose bushes is that they are not at their best in February, and will most likely resemble a bunch of thorny twigs in a pot! But if your Valentine is a keen gardener I guarantee they will not mind. In fact they will enjoy the anticipation of the future blooms.
Myrtle is another plant you might like to consider. It’s been associated with love since Roman times and is still used in wedding bouquets. With its neat glossy evergreen leaves and clusters of fragrant, fluffy white flowers followed by purple berries, Myrtis communis is a plant of quiet good taste. If planted in a sheltered spot it can eventually grow into a tree up to 5m tall. If you want to give a flower in bloom at the moment try a potted camellia, winter honeysuckle, violas, or an orchid. These plants are all associated with love and longing. If you simply must hand over a bunch of cut flowers, try to choose blooms grown in the mild climate of the Scilly Isles as environmentally-friendly alternatives to exotic species flown in from the other side of the globe. ‘Paperwhite’ narcissi are beautifully scented and available now. With just a little thought you can come up with the perfect gift for the gardener in your life.

To make the batter, crack the egg into a large mixing bowl. Add the flour, milk and a tiny pinch of sea salt then whisk everything together until you have a lovely, smooth batter. Put a large frying pan on a medium heat and after a minute or so, add ½ tablespoon of oil. Carefully tilt the pan to spread the oil out evenly. Add a few ladles of batter to the pan, leaving enough space between each one so they have room to spread out slightly – each ladleful will make one pancake, and you’ll need to cook them in batches. Cook the pancakes for 1 to 2 minutes, or until little bubbles appear on the surface and the bases are golden, then use a fish slice to carefully flip them over. When the pancakes are golden on both sides, use a fish slice to transfer the pancakes to a plate. Repeat with the remaining batter, adding ½ tablespoon of oil to the pan between batches, if needed. Serve the pancakes straight away, topped with a dollop of natural yoghurt, and some extra berries, if you like.

I’ve been very busy this Emily month planning my 18th birthday, which I’m really looking forward to. My family and I are going away over my birthday weekend but I have no idea where, hopefully I will like it! I’m not sure how my Mum will be able to pack my thousands of presents into the car! I have also been continuing to learn to drive and revising for my theory test. I have spent a long time visiting different car garages and sitting in and trying out various cars. I have discovered that I’m a very fussy buyer! There are so many different models and it is taking a long time to find a perfect one at a reasonable price. At the start of last month I went to my ‘Sixth Form Winter Ball’. The photo booth was very entertaining and there were lots of funny props, which helped us create some very interesting pictures throughout the night! There was also a magician doing magic tricks throughout the evening as well as a sweet buffet where you could fill up pick and mix bags. I can’t believe that this time next year I will be on University nights out, it’s very exciting. This month we treated my Dad to a scrumptious birthday lunch at Cool Beans Coffee Shop in Christchurch Road. I don’t think I have ever had such a huge and delicious baguette full of chicken, bacon and salad. They also have an amazing choice of milkshakes including Oreo Cookie and Strawberry Cheesecake. Cool Beans is also licenced and open in the evenings and I hear that their large variety of pizzas are very tasty too. Hope you have a good February.
