“
Finding Home” at Christ Church Cathedral has been an exciting journey in a remarkable year of spiritual growth and service. As a people of prayer and action, we have learned that deep in the heart of every person is a longing for home. To be accepted for who we truly are—precious and beloved by God—is an extraordinary gift. This gift is available to all. To share this gift with the world is our mission. Coming home to ourselves and to God is about finding our soul purpose—to fulfill our destiny, to be what God wants us to be. Creating a spiritual home for all people through the welcome, hospitality, worship, pastoral care, stewardship, spirituality offerings and mission work at our Cathedral has been transformational. The stories and reports in this Annual Report attest to this truth, while also revealing that each of us is essential to the mission and well-being of the body of Christ at Christ Church Cathedral. Indeed, the blessing of the past year has been that at the heart of Christ Church Cathedral is God’s family growing in generosity and love together as we seek to live out God’s mission for us. God’s promise is this: No matter how far we travel or how ardently we search, in seeking our home we will find the greatest of treasures—the love of God, our true selves, a caring community and the opportunity to respond to the hurts and the hopes of the world. Four Vestry members will complete their terms this year: Cissy Collins, Sherry Ferguson, John Brice (Junior Warden 2012-13) and Chuck Baldecchi (Senior Warden 2012-14). Additionally, Marc Mathews completed his term as Treasurer (2008-13). I am grateful to each of them and thank them with all my heart. They have served with wisdom and incredible generosity of time, talent, and resources. I hope you will join me in thanking each of them for their faithful service. I want to say a word about our Senior and Junior Wardens and our Treasurer. Chuck, John and Marc have given tirelessly in helping the Cathedral live more fully into its mission. They are trusted and wise partners who have served you well, and I am grateful for their clear thinking, dedication and counsel. I am delighted that each will continue serve in other areas’ ministry as they continue to lead Christ Church from strength to strength. Thank you to those Vestry completing their commitment to Christ Church Cathedral. Because of their faithfulness and the dedicated service of our remarkable clergy and staff, we are in a strong position to carry out God’s call for us to be a spiritual home for all people. As we step ever more deeply into the abundance of God’s love, may the Lord bless your going out and coming in now and forever. Amen. With gratitude

Isn’t it a delight when we are included and connected? In Hebrews, we are counseled, “Welcome the stranger, for in doing so some have entertained angels.” The angels in our midst are those who visit us. The word is out in Lexington that something wonderful, something glorious, and something holy is going on at Christ Church Cathedral. People are drawn to this holy place by word of mouth, by invitation, and by the Holy Spirit. Invite someone to visit Christ Church Cathedral with you. eep in the heart of every human being is a desire for home. Inviting people to find that home in God is central to our worship. If finding our spiritual home entails stepping deeper into God’s loving presence, we experienced this in significant ways this past year. We welcomed infants and children into the body of Christ through the Sacrament of Baptism; at the Easter Vigil, we baptized several adults in this new service that is becoming a Cathedral favorite. Our regional Confirmation service was celebrated in the context of a Sunday afternoon service as youth and adults made their affirmation of faith. We also commissioned thirty-six youth acolytes and fourteen adult acolytes who were prepared for this important ministry by Jim Ware. At Sanctuary, our contemplative service, we welcome many newcomers into the deep peace of God through the beauty of Celtic and Appalachian music offered by

Pleasant Company, Lisa Hall and a host of other gifted musicians. This service continues to grow in depth and purpose. It not only reaches those in our community who find Sunday evening worship a pleasing alternative to busy schedules, but it is also calling many newcomers to discover or rekindle their faith. New participants are finding their way into community and seeking baptism and confirmation through their experience at Sanctuary. A special highlight of worship this year was welcoming Dr. Everett McCorvey and Friends as they led our Sunday Forum and morning worship. Their rich offering of music and witness provided enormous joy and blessing. Week by week, we gather together at Christ’s table where we are welcomed home and strengthened for service in the world to which we are sent. Careful work goes into designing consistency of theme and message for our services. Our preaching is strong and stirs us to action, and our world-class music program continues to inspire. It is hard to imagine the dedication and hours so many offer to make our worship soar. Words cannot convey the deep thanks we feel for all who do this work: the clergy, musicians, Acolytes, Vergers, Altar Guild, sound operators, communications, bulletin proof readers, Lectors, Intercessors, Ushers, Greeters, and all ministers of welcome and hospitality.

he Cathedral music ministry exists in order to offer the highest praises to God, to support the ongoing mission of the congregation and to enhance the cultural life of the city of Lexington. The music ministry serves as a primary source of evangelism by attracting new members to Christ Church Cathedral. We have an abundance of talent and energy to offering musical excellence to the Glory of God. Our chorister program encompasses three choirs for boys and girls ages five through eighteen. It is one of nine of its type in the United States. We follow an adapted curriculum provided by the Royal School of Church Music (RSCM). This curriculum emphasizes team efforts, group vocal and liturgical training as well as individual musical and leadership goals. We have an active and ongoing recruiting program in place that draws families from our membership as well as a variety of area schools. The boys’ and girls’ choirs continue to rotate between the 8:30 and 11:00am services allowing each chorister the opportunity to attend Sunday school at least twice per month. In addition, both treble choirs have the opportunity to sing with the talented men of the Cathedral Choir.

Including Cathedral Imps and Gods Children Sing, the Cathedral offers opportunities for experiencing the power of music to children of all ages. We offer three adult choirs, the Cathedral Men’s Choir, Schola (adult women) and Cathedral Singers (mixed adults). The Cathedral Choirs continue to grow and revitalize themselves by learning new music and providing an ever expanding repertoir to proclaim God’s word. We enjoy music of the Celtic tradition at our 6:00pm service, Sacntuary. The group Pleasant Company, Lisa Hall and a variety of additional muscians lead this beauitful contemplative service. Our thanks are extend to the Friends of Cathedral Music, Cathedral Music Committee and Choir Guild. The Guild hosted the Annual Lessons and Carols reception, choir dinners, Cathedral cake fundraiser, and the annual choir banquet. We offer our profound thanks to the vestry, our music staff and clergy, and to the choirs and parents for their contagious enthusiasm and dedication to musical excellence.

2014 ART
T
his year Art at the Cathedral carried out its mission to integrate art into the spiritual life of the Cathedral, to use art as a ministry to connect with the downtown community, to encourage and support local artists, and to maintain and enhance the Cathedral’s permanent collection. During the year we hosted six different art exhibits and attracted almost 2,000 visitors to the Cathedral on Gallery Hop Friday nights. At each Gallery Hop we featured music and refreshments, as well as the visual arts, aand encouraged other Cathedral ministries to join in spreading the word. Our exhibits this year included a beautiful wildlife photo exhibit by the Lexington Creative Camera Club; a wonderful art exhibit “Grace of Connections”, curated by Cate Wagoner; a show of non-objective abstractions, curated by Anne Bjork; a lovely “Winter Inspiration” exhibit, curated by Bob Sanford; prints from the handwritten illuminated St. John’s Bible with responses by local artists; and a fascinating show of book cover art, curated by Kathleen Imhoff. Educational programs offered during the year with the exhibits included a calligraphy workshop, painting workshops for children and adults, and field trips to local and regional art museums. In June 2014 we were blessed with a colorful addition to our permanent collection created by Robert Walker. Robert graciously donated his rendition entitled “The Kells Evangelists of Christ Church Cathedral,” in memory of Helen Burg.

C
hildren’s Ministries, from birth through the 5th grade, aim to provide a safe place for children to have fun, explore our faith through music, story, play, art and conversation. Nursery renovations during the past year added bright walls, new toys and furniture. The space is welcoming to both parents and children. Pagers are available so parents can be immediately contacted if needed. God’s Children Sing is a formation experience provided for children ages 0-3 every Sunday. Musical experiences for both adults and children center on topics of faith. It is a class of play that encourages children’s developmental processes through music, fun and fellowship. Godly Play is the foundation for the Christian formation of young children at Christ Church Cathedral. Children are surrounded in the room by images of our faith as well as in the story. Through storytelling, adults and children find a point of identification within the story and contemplate what God may be saying to them through the experience. Throughout the year, we plan children’s events to teach through art, drama, wonder and fun.

ll of our clergy, staff and many of our parishioners take active roles in providing pastoral care. We visit those who are in hospital and others who are no longer able to attend church. The clergy jointly send birthday cards to those parishioners no longer able to travel to church and to those celebrating significant milestone birthdays (90 years or more). During Advent, the clergy visited our shut-ins and gave them poinsettias. On Ash Wednesday, clergy took and the imposition of ashes to many of our shut-ins. During Eastertide, a luncheon was held at Mayfair Village for those parishioners who live there. Pastoral care is foremost in the minds of clergy when a parishioner or immediate family member of a parishioner dies. Clergy accompany parishioners to the funeral home handling the arrangements so that there is a pastoral presence during that difficult time. Clergy meet and work diligently with parishioners to plan funerals or memorial services that best exemplify the desires of the family and deceased in keeping with the Book of Common Prayer. Over the months following a death and on anniversaries of deaths, clergy check in with surviving family members to see how they are doing. The Prayer Shawl Knitters,
started by Flo Mayer, is a small but loyal group of women who make prayer shawls and then provide the shawls to clergy to take to parishioners as needed. Nineteen prayer shawls were given to parishioners or their family members during the past year. The CCC Prayer Chain, headed by Loys and Sonja Mathers, receives requests for prayers. Once the Matherses receive the requests, the pertinent information concerning the prayer requests are sent on to The Rev. Paula Ott and the other members of the prayer chain. Those prayer requests are included in the weekly Prayers of the People on Wednesdays. Thanks to the diligent and selfless work of Mimi Milward, 10 of the 11 pastoral care teams, composed solely of parishioners, send cards, deliver meals and visit parishioners during times of adversity as well as times of celebration such as significant birthdays and births. This past year, 15 members of the parish were commissioned as Eucharistic Visitors. These parishioners make visits to shut-ins, taking them Communion and visiting with those who are no longer able to attend church. Last, but surely not least, the Daughters of the King, as well as the Junior Daughters of the King, commit their lives to prayer for others.

The members of Christ Church Cathedral are deeply committed to mission, mission that changes lives. A new mission the Cathedral has embraced is sponsoring a refugee family through Kentucky Refugee Ministries. Our family, James, Keza, Beyonce (age 5), and Knowless (age 3), arrived on September 4 from a refugee camp in Rwanda. Cathedral members set up an apartment for them, stocked the pantry and fridge, helped with clothing, and are assisting them in navigating life in Lexington and America. The goal is for the family to be self-sufficient within six months. Our family faces additional challenges because a few weeks before departure, James was shot twice. 2014 GENEROSITY
“
“
A
t Christ Church Cathedral we model a community of Christians who live joyfully and sacrificially across many facets of our lives. To offer a generous life lived in a spirit of gratitude, we encourage those who call this Cathedral their home to consider a holistic approach. This includes being generous through service in ministries, through deeply held relationships, through hospitality, through our financial resources given to further God’s ministry through Christ Church Cathedral. We have responded generously to the question, “What percentage of my income is God calling me to give for the mission and ministries of Christ Church Cathedral?” This past year the total amount pledged increased by $30,000, an exciting new level in support of fulfilling God’s dream for us through our many ministries, including mission and outreach, youth, Christian education, music and more. Automatic payment of all or part of our pledge from a bank account is an easy and convenient way to pay our pledge. Many who call the Cathedral their home take advantage of this service. More information is available in the Stewardship section of our website or from Lesa Wehrle, our Parish Administrator. Generosity is a year-round practice of listening, to discern what God is calling us to do and acting out of gratitude for all God has given to us. We have come a long way, and we are grateful for the incredible response. If you have not pledged, we ask that you prayerfully consider pledging a percentage of your income based on the biblical principle of proportional giving. As you prayerfully consider your pledge this year, we ask that you have a conversation with God about whether you are being called to take a step up in you pledge. Every pledge and increase allows us to continue on the path of growth and vitality as we seek to fulfill God’s mission for Christ Church Cathedral. The goal of this holistic and life-giving approach to stewardship is to help God’s people to grow in our rela-

tionship with Jesus through the use of the gifts God has given to us. LEGACY SOCIETY Christ Church Legacy Society was formed in 2001. Our beloved friend Steve Specht, who passed away this year, was the visionary and founder of the Christ Church Cathedral Legacy Society. With gratitude to God for Steve’s faithful service we pray that he may rest in peace and rise in glory. Thanks to Steve’s work, we now have 125 members. How do you become a member of the Legacy Society? It’s easy. You don’t gift now – you just make an arrangement to leave something after your death. It could be a bequest in your will, or something as simple as changing the beneficiary on a portion of a retirement account or life insurance policy. Your gift after death will not only bless you and your family, it will bless Christ Church and the community for generations to come. Anything that is left to the church, unless otherwise directed, will be added to the Christ Church Endowment Fund to be used to fund ministries and programs in the future. Please pray about making a commitment to leave something to the church. The church has been and continues to be a very important and influential part of our lives and our families’ lives. Call Billy Van Pelt at 268-8630 or Marc Mathews at 797-2791 if you have any questions. Please pray about this. We hope to see a lot of new members at our next Legacy Society dinner function in May!

2014 FINANCE
2
014 has been a wonderful year as Christ Church Cathedral parishioners have increased their practice of generosity and provided $30,000 of additional pledge support. As a result of empowering God’s mission through Christ Church Cathedral, we were able to move forward with a planned budget deficit of just $46,000. This significant improvement provides a strong base for the Cathedral’s many and diverse ministries.
AUDIT The 2014 audit of Christ Church Cathedral was performed by the independent accounting firm of Ray, Foley, Hensley & Company, PLLC. The auditors issued a clean or unqualified opinion on the financial statements.

Let your light shine before others, so that they may see your good works and give glory to your Father in heaven.

his year has been an exciting, busy, and fulfilling year for the Vestry. I want to express my deepest gratitude to the members of the Vestry for their ministry to Christ Church Cathedral. Each Vestry member takes to heart his or her role in the leadership of this Cathedral and connection to the many ministries and people each represents and supports. We are a Christ-centered church through which parishioners respond to their baptismal vows by being people of prayer and action. My heart is gladdened as we let our light shine through all we are called to do as a Christian community: working side by side building a Habitat for Humanity house; caring for 28 homeless men at Room in the Inn; hosting Art at the Cathedral’s Gallery Hop; and showcasing our internationally renowned choir. My gratitude and thanks extend to each and every parishioner for answering the call to the multitude of ministries of Christ Church Cathedral. I would like to highlight the purchase of the parking

garage as a long-held dream to help welcome all to this wonderful Cathedral; a successful stewardship campaign to carry out God’s work in the world; calling The Rev. Kate Byrd as our new Associate for Youth; and the thoughtful and grace-filled dialogue of our Holy Conversations. John Brice deserves special recognition. John’s expertise as a real-estate attorney was invaluable as we expanded our parking in downtown Lexington, which accomplishes one of our goals for a bright future. I also want to thank Marc and Gwen Mathews and Allen and Ann Whitney Garner for leading our community through a new and inspiring approach to stewardship that begins in gratitude and concludes in grace. The Vestry’s focus on stewardship as a response in gratitude is spiritual leadership within this community of faith. Through the thoughtful use of all that the Cathedral has been given, we have faithfully managed our expenses even as giving in gratitude has increased. I want to recognize the incredible work and leadership of Dean Wade, our clergy and staff. I have so enjoyed working with Dean Wade and appreciate her spiritual leadership and steady focus. Further, we now have the staff and clergy necessary to meet the present and future needs of our growing Cathedral. Thank you for the honor of serving as your Senior Warden. Sincerely, Charles D. Baldecchi

“
This is none other than the house of God and this is the gate of heaven.” Genesis 28:17. Have you ever walked into the Cathedral and thought that this is the gate to heaven? This beautiful house of worship has been entrusted to us, and we are called to care for it as it is God’s house. It has been a busy year for us in many areas of ministry, including the care of this beautiful place. Here are the highlights: • We purchased the parking garage with the great help of John Brice. This helps to fulfill the longterm dream to welcome all to this Cathedral community. The monthly costs of this purchase are offset by rental income from Central Parking. And a new garage door was added. • The Bishop Abbott Memorial windows in the Choir Room were in need of preservation and repair, and so they were removed, re-leaded, repaired as needed, and reinstalled. Great thanks is given to John Hodgman, who also worked on this project. • The Choir Room was repainted by John Hodgman, Michelle Dunlap, and Erich and Kathleen Balling. • The exterior window frames of the Tilford Room were repainted by John Hodgman. • The main refrigerator in the kitchen was replaced due to terminal failure of the previous refrigerator. • Two burglaries resulted in needing to replace the
downspouts in the Garden area, and hinges on two doors. • The 52-year-old Helm Building elevator ceased to function. Repair will be forthcoming. • Replacing the HVAC system in the Helm Building is a continuing need. • We are assessing the status of our 131 Church Street property following the departure of our tenant. After nearly 33 years, Christ Church Cathedral’s sexton, Brownell Haddix, Jr., retired at the end of July to “go fishing.” A sexton in the Episcopal Church is “An officer of the church charged with the maintenance of its buildings … and custodian of its sacred objects.” Although we are sad at his departure, we celebrate Brownell’s retirement and our prayers go with him. Our interim sexton, Joe Agee, has been faithfully learning this position.

The Communications Ministry at the Cathedral continues to extend its reach. We see new people signing up to receive our emails every week! With more events in the city, we have a great need for publicity in our community. June Dorsett leads publicity for Cathedral events beautifully, but more help is needed! If you are interested in making this a part of your own ministry, please contact June at junedorsett@prodigy.net. And you can always help by promoting Cathedral events on social media. 30 / ANNUAL REPORT_2014
