In 2020, it was all about

Dear Friends,
In 2020, it was all about
Dear Friends,
I hope you are well as we continue to navigate these difficult days. Not surprisingly, our Christel House students and their families have been significantly affected by the pandemic. 2020 and '21 will always be remembered as an extraordinary phase that tested our resilience and commitment to navigate during these unprecedented times.
While the school remained closed for a large part of the past year, we continued to support our students and their families. Our primary objective was to avert any further existential crisis in their lives. From providing essential food kits to monetary help, we did it all. It continues today.
Our teachers and staff proved to be the real heroes during these trying times. With some upskilling, our teachers switched from classroom teaching to online classes and recalibrated the curriculum to meet the differential learning capabilities of individual students. It is with immense pride that I acknowledge the gallant Christel House India team, who stood tall and stepped forward to meet the moment headon and successfully so!
Our donors' generosity ensured that we continued our operations, bridging the longstanding “digital divide” for our students and minimizing the learning gap. Our supporters have always been the driving force through our journey of reshaping futures and transforming lives. It is humbling to see how far we have come, together - we shall always remain grateful.
As a tribute to our founder Christel DeHaan, whom we lost on 6th June 2020, we pledge to uphold her ideals at all times. Christel's legacy will continue as we remain inspired by her belief that we all can make a difference.
Warm Regards,
Jaison C Mathew, CEO, Christel House India
Christel DeHaan’s life epitomized the American Dream. Her passion for life, for causes, for people and for the arts and nature was underscored by a deep commitment to excellence in all that she did. Christel made a difference as an business leader, as a community leader and as a philanthropist.
After a remarkable career in business as the co-founder of Resort Condominiums International (RCI), Christel created Christel House in 1998 with the goal of transforming the lives of impoverished children around the globe.
Now serving nearly 6,000 students and graduates worldwide through schools in India, Jamaica, Mexico, South Africa and the United States, Christel House was created to address the root causes of poverty through a holistic human development model.
Thanks to Christel’s careful planning, the work of Christel House will continue to be supported through her estate. It was her wish that all Christel House general and administrative expenses be covered in perpetuity. This allows all donor gifts to fund programs and services needed by Christel House students.
The pandemic has disproportionately affected families in under-resourced communities. Despite challenging circumstances as Christel House India schools closed, staff at both schools showed resilience, taking action by distributing grocery kits and other critical resources to students and their families.

“The resilience and commitment exhibited by the staff and students under very difficult and constantly changing circumstances is amazing.”

The crisis left thousands of daily wage laborers in Bangalore and Atal Nagar unemployed and without access to food and other essentials. With donor assistance, Christel House India is extending support to 1077 students’ families fortnightly

Christel House Bangalore students receive tablets for remote learning.
While Christel House kids have access to technology in the classroom, with the pandemic closing schools, students needed the tools to transition to e-learning. With this in mind, the ‘Bridge the digital divide’ campaign was launched. That meant purchasing hundreds of tablets, laptops and internet connection to facilitate remote learning. With the unstinting stakeholders - staff, parents, community and students worked support from donors, Christel House kids continue learning together to deal with all the challenges arising from the from home. “The greatest success was seeing how the various pandemic,” says Jaison C Mathew, CEO Christel House India
“The Tabs helped me adjust with the new method of learning and overcome the challenges I faced academically and emotionally.”

During the earliest days of the pandemic, Christel House India recognized the abrupt closing of school could cause uncertainty and make children feel isolated. Teachers, social workers and counsellors reached out, letting students know they were not alone. The dual hats they wore as teachers and counsellors meant they had to remain graceful during times of adversity and absorb the problems of their students as their own. The lines between their personal and professional lives had blurred, but they never lost focus of their responsibilities.
We can't thank them enough for taking up more than their fair share of responsibilities. Teachers and staff – we thank you for your empathy, patience, and perseverance; we salute your selflessness!
“Ifthechildrencannotcometoschool, wewilltaketheschooltothechildren.”
Teachers at Christel House India are going above and beyond to ensure students’ emotional and academic success. Schools have remained closed. The India team brainstormed to create and deliver homework packets to younger students. Teachers then follow-up via phone to assess how kids are doing and to lift their spirits. During the lockdown, many children have experienced deep personal trauma. When a student lost her father in an accident, she and her mother received support from Christel House counsellors. “It gives the children a sense of security to know teachers are only a call away,” says Maya. “It takes time. But we don’t mind putting in those extra hours as we know it benefits the children.”
One of Christel House's unique interventions is its career education and guidance. From the moment students begin their time at Christel House India in kindergarten, and until five years after graduating from PUC grade 12, they receive personalized guidance and support through our College & Careers program.
At Christel House, the College & Careers preparation begins in middle school under the JIVA program. The JIVA program is a systematic and scientific program to help students explore their interest and maximize their potential. The teachers and the school counsellors track each student's aptitude and interest through scientific methodologies and worksheets to help students explore their skills in relation to their career interests.
Additionally, as our students advance in grades, they are given opportunities to understand their career options through structured career guidance workshops and discussions. Before our students enter the workforce, they would have developed a well-defined career path, skills in self awareness, understanding the field of work and facilitate career preparations. A large part of the career guidance workshops and discussions are conducted by the career professionals and employees of our Corporate Social Responsibility (CSR) partners.
In 2020, our alumni leadership committee has been established with the aim of coordinating alumni activities and involvement with our students. The alumni who are in the formal sector workforce, hosted virtual workshops on various careers, CV writing, interview readiness and skills required in the workplace. It is important that our students have positive role models who are drawn from local communities – and who better than our senior students who have already passed out of school.

It is a proud moment and a validation of our efforts, when four Christel House Bangalore grade 12 students got accepted to top universities in India for their under-graduate studies. We have always encouraged our students to give wings to their dreams and we are delighted that theirs, as well as ours came true.
Jayalakshmi and Varalakshmi will soon be joining KREA University. While Savitha and Sushmita are excited to start a new chapter of their lives with Azim Premji University.
“What is common in the lives of all the four girls is their persistence in riding the crest of opportunity and seizing the day,” says Praveena, College & Careers Coordinator.
(Below) Notwithstanding the hardships that they had to face during these unusual times of the pandemic, our high school students proved that with the right support and the will to excel, one can overcome any odds.
Meghana Shree, 2016 Christel House India alumni, pursued her ambition to be an engineer. Having procured excellent grades in her degree, Meghana began her career as an Assistant System Engineer with Tata Consultancy Services (TCS).
“It's been only a few months since I started earning. My dad was a driver and lost his job due to the COVID 19 pandemic I helped him start his own business. Today, I feel proud that I can support my family.’’
In 2016, Dilip Kumar graduated from Christel House India. On finishing his engineering degree in 2020, he got recruited by Mu Sigma Business Solutions as a Trainee Decision Scientist. “I owe a great deal to Christel House,” says Dilip. “The College & Careers program has aided me in becoming the person I am today Christel House has changed my future, my personality, and my level of confidence ”

of Christel House India graduates have enrolled in tertiary education.
of Christel House graduates are gainfully engaged, and are either studying in universities or working in the formal sector or both.
When a Christel House graduate achieves self-sufficiency, subsequent generations also benefit. If every one of our 2,067 students has two children, and each of their children has two offspring, within two generations 11,284 individuals would be experiencing an improved standard of living. While there is no way to ascertain with certainty the multiplier impact, this calculation demonstrates the power of permanently breaking the cycle of poverty.
On Orientation Day, children proudly showed off their new school uniforms. (Right) Kids also received their very own backpack filled with books and supplies.
Christel House’s newest school, Christel House Jamaica, opened with students in kindergarten to Grade 2. Each year going forward an additional 60 kindergarten students will be admitted. When the Ministry of Health approved Christel House to receive students for in-person classes, a tropical storm warning and days of torrential rain caused flooding on the island, forcing teachers and staff to adapt. “It was a very busy time for all,” says the Hon. Sally Porteous, CEO of Christel House Jamaica. Following the weather emergency, the school finally opened for in-person learning with approved COVID-19 protocols. Marsha McPherson, Information Technology teacher, says the first months have been full of joy. “I believe Christel House Jamaica will have a tremendous impact on the students, their families and the wider community.” McPherson knows the school will bring change. “Christel House represents a great example for future schools to follow and for current schools to emulate.”
Students from kindergarten to Grade 2 welcomed to Christel House Jamaica.
