Annual Report
2014-2015
Christ Episcopal School
Traditions
From the Headmaster: “Without our traditions, our lives would be as shaky as… ...a fiddler on the roof !” I remember very well the acute feeling of “shakiness” that I experienced during my first few years at Christ Episcopal. At the time I arrived here, CES was all of 25 years old, but already the school had established a sacred catalogue of traditions, which I learned quite early on that the new Headmaster had better not mess with. I realized that I had to understand those traditions in order to absorb the culture, and I had to embrace the culture in order to love the school. Our decision to honor our many school traditions this year represents our attempt to recognize the importance that these many traditions hold in the life of the school. And as Tevye suggests in Fiddler on the Roof: “Because of our traditions, we’ve kept our balance for many years.” Six years ago, I was charged by our Board of Trustees to start a new high school and, at the same time, to keep the rest of the school on an ascending arch. In so doing, we found ourselves creating “new traditions” at CES. I learned quite early that the best way to sell the new high school and other new programs to our current parents was to affirm that every program we were initiating or expanding would be firmly based on the successful ones which came before. So the new high school was to be a reflection of the traditions and culture of the middle school and lower school programs. And our expanded athletic program, for example, was to be based on foundations already established to build character through participation in sports. Likewise, our enhanced Christian Formation program had to be rooted in the character and identity of the Episcopal Church. We seemed to be safe, as long as we stayed close to the existing Operating Principles, and as long as the new traditions somehow dovetailed with the old. Finally, the greatest and most important tradition of our school is adherence to our mission. Last August, as we honored and thanked the founders of the school for the vision and aspiration which led them to start the school back in 1984, I assured them, in good faith, that the very mission statement they crafted 30 years ago had not been changed -- not one word of it. That mission still defines who we are today, and still serves as guidance for all we endeavor. This annual report serves as testimony to the many parents, grandparents, and friends of CES who still believe in that mission, and who, by their generosity and trust help us to be faithful to the rich and wonderful traditions of Christ Episcopal School. Sincerely,
John Morvant Headmaster
From the Advancement Office: As the school prepared to celebrate its 30th anniversary last year, I found myself scrambling to locate information related to the school’s history. Pam Perry’s assistance and institutional memory were invaluable, and the information existed, but in manila file folders with faded or missing labels and in the form of pictures of students and faculty who looked vaguely familiar or might possibly be placed within a decade or so depending on the clothes they wore. After the celebrations were over, I went about creating a booklet that would summarize the history of Christ Episcopal School. I read every yearbook and Good News in our archive, and all the available copies of the Board of Trustees meeting minutes. What to do with the history I composed is still being debated, but I learned and accomplished much more than I intended to when I began this endeavor. Very importantly, I was reminded of an essential truth: at Christ Episcopal School, we honor the past while planning for the future. The traditions that began with the founding of this school are still fully integrated into our program and continue to have meaning for members of this community. And we are not resistant to change or to adding new traditions. So while there are annual events that would be recognizable to our earliest alumni, more recent classes continue to enrich the life of our school with new and equally valuable contributions. This edition of the Annual Report is dedicated to traditions and to Christ Episcopal School’s dedicated supporters. For more than 30 years, generous members of this community have helped to make this school the unique and beloved institution that it is today. Gifts of time, money, and talent to our school represent an investment in our future and an acknowledgement of our traditionrich and cherished past, so, on behalf of our students and faculty, the direct beneficiaries of every gift, THANK YOU! Sincerely,
Jerry Henson Director of Advancement

Art at the Park has been a fixture at Christ Episcopal School and in Covington since 1986. This year, the event brought in an amazing $156,452 that will be applied toward supporting the school’s most pressing programmatic concerns. Art at the Park allows students, teachers, parents, and other members of our community an opportunity to create, view, demonstrate, and celebrate the arts. A huge thank-you to all of our generous sponsors and donors, and to our dedicated parent volunteers, who contributed countless hours to make this event such a success.

Traditions One of the defining characteristics of independent schools like Christ Episcopal School is the extent to which we foster a sense of belonging within our community. Students, teachers, parents, alumni, friends, and all who step foot on either of our campuses find a deep and personal identification and meaning in our school’s traditions, those long-standing and important events and programs that help to define the culture of our school and community. It is the traditions that students remember long after they have graduated, and it is those traditions that cement the bonds between former students, faculty and staff members, alumni parents, and our school. Founders Day
Grandparents Day
Our traditions are derived not only from our school’s past, but also from our Christian faith and our rich South Louisiana culture. When members of this community participate in the shared experiences that traditions provide, a true sense of belonging develops. Annual celebrations and events, large and small, in-class and school-wide, remind students and adults alike that they are accepted and valued by others; that we are not just learning, but that our social and emotional needs will be also met through shared experiences and a commitment to other members of the community. Traditions remind us and reinforce the belief that a successful school fosters positive relationships amongst community members, provides a supportive climate for learning, and encourages extracurricular involvement of all types.
Schools are living communities, not just buildings or programs. Feeling that they are part of something larger than themselves, and gaining an appreciation for his or her contribution, is the experience we wish for every student, and provides that sense of belonging. While we cannot credit all of our successes to traditions, we know that they are important to our school and our students, and that each tradition holds a special place in the hearts of so many members of this community.

Why Donate to Christ Episcopal School’s Annual Fund? Gifts to the Annual Fund provide critical funds that bridge “the gap” between tuition and other income and expenses. Unrestricted donations to the Annual Fund are applied to the school’s many budgeted expenses such as learning support, facilities maintenance, and technology. Typically, Annual Fund donations are applied to the area of greatest need unless otherwise specified by the donor. A restricted gift to the Annual Fund is made to support your favorite programs at Christ Episcopal School. Tuition assistance, the Barn, or faculty professional development are just a few examples of programs that benefit from restricted giving. When making your donation, please indicate if you wish for your gift to be applied toward a specific budgetary item or program. Anyone can contribute to the Annual Fund, which encompasses donations made during the fiscal year of July 1 through June 30 of the following year. Gifts can be made via check, cash, credit card, or stock transfer. You may also make a gift, or monthly recurring gifts, online by visiting www.christepiscopalschool.org and clicking on the “Giving” tab. For more information about ways to give to Christ Episcopal School, please contact Development Coordinator Suzanne Freret at 985.871.9902 ext. 281 or sfreret@christepiscopalschool.org. For the 2014-2015 fiscal year, the total Annual Fund dollars raised were $263,041, which exceeded our goal of $192,000! We have been blessed with a continued base of committed donors and are extremely grateful to everyone who participated. Every dollar donated supports our students’ educational experience and represents your endorsement of the work that we do.
Thank you!

“The Race is On!” Campaign
The mission of Christ Episcopal School athletics is to teach character through sport; build confidence; develop social skills, sports skills, and physical fitness; and cultivate a culture of servant leadership. “The Race is On!” will enable the school to maintain its commitment to our student athletes and meet the objectives of the most recent master plan and strategic plan: to construct outstanding athletic facilities, to retain current students and attract new students to the high school, and to continue to engage the community in the strategic growth and development of our campus. “The Next 30 Years” Endowment Campaign Christ Episcopal School seeks to develop an endowment that will serve as a permanent, self-sustaining source of funding. Once we attain a certain dollar amount, still to be determined, endowment assets will be invested. Then each year a portion of the value of the fund will be paid out to support the fund’s purpose, and any earnings in excess of this distribution will be used to build the fund’s market value. In this way, the endowment can grow and provide support for its designated purpose in perpetuity. When you donate to the endowment fund, you create a permanent legacy of support for Christ Episcopal School. The Right Rev’d and Mrs. John Bauerschmidt Mr. and Mrs. John Ragan

Growing with Grace
Your generosity makes it possible. Annual Fund 2015-2016 Thank you for your continued support of Christ Episcopal School. The 2015-2016 Annual Fund campaign runs through June 30, 2016. We have tried in every way to make sure this report is correct and to give appropriate credit to our generous donors. So many people have given anonymously and selflessly throughout the year that in some cases an oversight may have occurred. If we have made an error, we sincerely apologize. Please bring it to our attention by calling Jerry Henson at 985.871.9902 ext. 277. Back cover: All-school Eucharist: First Day of School.
