All students study Core Music for 1 semester and also have the option to study 1 or 2 semesters of Elective Music.
Year 8 Students can elect to study 1 or 2 semesters of Elective Music.
Year 9 Students can elect to study 1 or 2 term studies of Elective Music. Students intending to study Music Performance or Industry Skills in Year 10 are advised to study at least 1 term of Elective Music in Year 9.

Elective Music Year 7, 8 & 9 Learning Activities Common to Each Study Each semester, or term of Elective Music across Years 7-9, focuses on a range of musical styles. As a sequence of subjects, they aim to give students a broad range of knowledge and skills while being a motivating and fun musical experience. Being a competent and confident musician involves being flexible and adaptable to a variety of situations. Each study consists of common activities necessary to develop a student’s general musicianship and performance skills. The common learning activities to each study include:-
1. Rehearsing and Performing - Practise and perform music as a class in a variety of settings. 2. Composing and Arranging - Write and arrange music that will be performed by the class. 3. Music Theory - Learn music theory with a practical approach and apply this to real world situations. 4. Aural Skills - Develop aural skills by learning and notating songs and musical elements by ear. 5. Music Styles - Listen to and analyse various styles of music to inform musical decisions and performance. 6. Performance Craft - Learn to prepare for performance including techniques to manage performance anxiety.

In Year 7 Elective Music, students will learn about a wide range of musical styles while performing on class instruments and /or instruments of their choice. Year 7 Elective music sees students learning about Rock, Pop, Blues, song writing and improvisation. They also create bands/ensembles to rehearse, perform, compose & record their performances.
In Year 8 Elective Music, students will learn about a wide range of musical styles while performing on classroom instruments and /or instruments of their choice. Students learn about the ‘grooves’ of various styles of popular music. They learn about the role of the rhythm section while rehearsing and performing in bands/ensembles.
*Students in Years 7 & 8 who learn an instrument within the Instrumental Music Program will really enjoy utilising their skills in these Music Electives. As well as students who already play an instrument, these electives cater for students who enjoy music and playing instruments. Students may choose to do these electives for one or both semesters.
Year 9 Elective Music 1 or 2 Terms of Study
This subject provides students with engaging practical activities, suited to musicians of all standards and also prepares students for music studies in Year 10. While rehearsing, performing, composing and recording, students learn about music’s amazing evolution. The units are designed to challenge students’ thinking about music as they explore the impact innovative composers have made by ‘bending the rules’. *Instrumental music students are strongly encouraged to complete at least one term study of elective music.
