New VCE Music Inquiry - Units 3 & 4

A subject catering for students with a broad range of music performance styles, instruments, standards & interests. Is offered as an accelerated Year 11 VCE Music Study &/or a Year 12 subject. Is a subject in which students choose an area of musical interest, they research, rehearse and perform music from this area of interest. There is no end-of-year performance exam and performance assessments may be completed and presented as an audio/video presentation. This subject should be undertaken following completion of Units 1 & 2 Music. Music Inquiry Units 3 & 4 may lead to another Unit 3/4 music study, provide opportunity for students to develop their musical skills and knowledge alongside their other pathways and/or assist with preparation for tertiary music study.

SAC work contributing to final score 30% Students choose and perform music of a selected style and or performance artist. They

examine how their performance relates to the selected music style/creator and compose and/or arrange music in the selected style/creator. Students investigate/research their selected musical style or performance artist. In their research they consider how music from different times/locations/creators influences other music and musicians. In Unit 3 they choose at least 2 pieces of music which display the traits of their chosen musical style/artist, and examine their contexts. From this they plan a proposal for an Area of Investigation for Unit 4.

Students listen to music extensively and compile a listening journal. They listen and respond to music from a range of styles and discuss similarities and differences, musical elements, performance techniques and compositional devices.

SAC work contributing to final score 5 %, End of Year Written Exam 15% EAT (External Assessed Task) 50%

Students compile a folio of their selected area of investigation. The folio will have:1. An Area of Investigation Description 2. An Analysis of the 2 works selected in Unit 3 from the Area of Investigation 3. Presentation of at least 3 performance works are to include:- at least one visually recorded live performance of a work from the Area of Investigation. - at least one audio (and/or video) of a short composition/arrangement influenced by the Area of Investigation and supporting documentation/ development work demonstrating the process of the work. Students continue compiling a listening journal, they listen and respond to music from a range of styles, discuss similarities and differences, musical elements, performance techniques and compositional devices. Assessment for this area of study is a SAC and End of Year exam – students complete written responses to questions on excerpts of music.
