Auxiliary Programs ANNUAL
| 2018 |
REPORT
WE BELIEVE THAT LEARNING GOES BEYOND THE FOUR WALLS OF A CLASSROOM. We also believe we can educate the whole child and promote lifelong learning on the court, in a dance studio, or even aboard a canoe. That is why our Auxiliary Programs provide ample academic and enrichment opportunities on and off campus, 365 days out of the year. We want every program to leave a lasting impact on each participant no matter where life takes them next.
CHRISTIAN A. MARTELL DIRECTOR OF AUXILIARY PROGRAMS AND CORPORATE OPERATIONS
In the fall of 2013, then Upper School Director Glen Turf approached me to help with marketing a new study abroad program, the first of its kind at Miami Country Day School. That moment set in motion a series of events that resulted in the successful creation of the Global Access To Education program, better known now as GATEway. The original four-week program in Madrid, Spain allowed students to immerse themselves in a different place and culture, while gaining course credit. Five years later, Glen Turf, our first-ever Director of Global Studies & International Programs, oversees a robust GATEway brand that includes the signature summer abroad program now in various sites (Madrid and the Alps, and previously Nice) and its one-week extension trip in a nearby site (GATEway Classic Italy, and soon GATEway Paris Lights), a middle school equivalent either during February or Spring Break (GATEway Quebec, and soon GATEway Panama), a language program for adults (GATEway Language), and an English immersion program for international students (GATEway Miami), with future plans to add an alumni program, more sites for study abroad and extensions, and an after-school club for lower school students. Glen’s GATEway is one of the many programs highlighted in this Auxiliary Programs Annual Report for fiscal year 2017-18. As Director of Auxiliary Programs and Corporate Operations, I am immensely grateful to work with such committed and resourceful program directors and staff, whose many efforts are represented in this report. I am also indebted to the dream team of Jacquie Niang, Chris Polite, Nicholas Marcelin, and Giselle Chirinos who worked tirelessly this past year to ensure the success of all of our programs. Finally, the work of Auxiliary Programs would not be possible without guidance and support from the Auxiliary Programs Committee of the Board of Trustees, Chris Bellows, President and Chief Operating Officer Gary Butts, and critical aid from the rest of the school community. Happy reading and we hope to see you engage with one of our many programs soon!

FAMILY TIES BY RASHAD HEAGLE ‘18
The Family is one of the most important social groups we belong to as we grow up and become part of society. It is from whom we learn most of our values and find our sense of belonging. Without our families, we would not be the same people we have grown up to become. Families are an integral part of Miami Country Day School. Not only do we welcome new families and provide formal education to their children, when one looks deeper into the microcosm of our Summer Programs, you may notice how many different families also work at Miami Country Day School during the summer months. Nolan Sutker, Director of Marketing and Communications, highlighted the many different families that made their mark on Miami Country Day School’s Summer Programs on the School’s Instagram (@miami_country_day_school). One such post was about the Caban family. The Caban family is composed of Facilities & Maintenance Director Mike Caban and his two daughters Bianca and Amanda Caban both graduates of the Class of 2016. Mike Caban has been a part of the school community since 1994, while Bianca and Amanda have been participants, volunteers, and for the past seven years counselors at our ever-popular Day Camp. Additionally, alumnus Paul Frechette ‘82 and his daughter Jackie Frechette were also highlighted by Alumni Director Christine Chancey in the Paul and Jackie Frechette are sports counselors at the Day
Camp. Marilyn Greenfield is an alumni parent, having had all three of her kids attend Miami Country Day School. Her first child graduated in 1993, her second child graduated in 1997, and her third child graduated in 2000. Some common family values are honesty, respect, and trust. These are like the values that Miami Country Day School abides by—honor, respect, wisdom, and compassion. A family is a connection among a group of people that provides guidance through trustworthy acceptance and security based on concepts of love and respect. This trustworthiness, wisdom, security, and respect can be seen in the work of other family members who are also coworkers including: Ruth Roberts and Sierra Mathis ‘17, Dennis and Emmalee Handlin, Alexandria and Hiram Rosas, Wilson Louissaint and Francesta and Nicholas Marcelin, and others. You’ll always be there for your family when they need you, and they’ll always be there for you—blood related or not. Family is about a bond between its members, not something defined by legality. Through many trials and tribulations, the multitudes of different types of families will continue to exist, breaking the mold of traditional ideas and redefining what we come to think of as “family”. Therefore, no matter how many families by blood relation work at or attend Miami Country Day School, you’ll always be able to call the people you meet through Miami Country Day School, family.
