PLEX- E Project

The rules used in the weaving patterns are digitally reconstructed into an integrated system of lines, in which the lines are connected through the technique of bifurcation, tangent and by forming knots. Thus, the Y, X-node and the tangent are the parent configurations that form the entire network. The research in these connections of lines leads us to form and design a system of linear components that transformed from simple lattice components to braided and branching lines according to the structural needs.

Lattice typologies parallel lines bundles crossing lines, knots braiding double braiding overlapping braiding branching

PURPOSE Through the collaboration of innovative computing and fabrication techniques, the Plex(e) project tries to fathom the spatial values of systems of lines in order to give its own response to the spatial problems of our society by proposing a continuous, dynamic, adaptable and efficient architecture that will follow the accelerating changes of our life.

LATTICE structure

increase complexity

Going into a more complex chair design, we looked at the famous Panton Chair for its simple but effective guide curves. Using similar logic of this chair, we managed to divide the design in layers. The first layer of the thick tubes are used to create structure stability. The second layer, which uses the thinner tubes creates the chair’s surfaces that are also generated by the agent based simulator.

CHAIR I perspective view

Realising the importance of the human body in regards to the seating object through physical modelling, we re-evaluated the efficiency of the chair through the use of the surface patterns and how the body would mould into it. We also tried to minimise the use of tubes for the legs as illustrated from the physical model, after applying concrete, it has made it thicker and over stable which made the model heavier than it should be.

Architectural scale

Column Studies these columns are designed with the same process as described above and apart from lattice and surface patterns. The combination of the lattice and surfaces vary in density and form complex geometries with braided lines, branching patterns, bundles and various in type surface patterns (single surface, double surfaces, ornaments).

sections

Architectural scale observatory The structure of the observatory is developed in three levels. A round staircase connects the floors in section and shape a helix movement between the columns. It is a composition that shaped through the hierarchies that followed in our design (bundles, braids, branches) and combines the different scales regarding to the spatial needs of its element.

The final proposal constitutes a composition of different geometries that shape floors which are connected through staircases and columns. All the parts of proposal (tripods, staircases, etc) follow the basic design rules that were mentioned above such as braiding branching and bundles. The plan is developed in a 90 degrees angle that is symmetrical. The main entrances are connected through elongated corridors vertically. This constitutes the main movement through the building.

site plan axes It is very important for us to find an available plot of land in the urban area of Athens, which will be near recreational and cultural facilities. The reason for this is that the vicinity of the theatre complex with other public regions helps in designing an organized web of public facilities in an urban space. We have chosen this particular site based on the advantage of its proximity to Philopappos Hill, a well-known tourist area.

The main idea of the design of the complex stems from the creative combination of the triangular plan of the site area, the setting of an eye-catching structure in the most acute angle of the triangle and the structures of the neoclassical facades. As regards the building itself, Filopappos street becomes the basic axis around which the theatre complex is assembled.

Unlike most theatres, this one includes two open public squares that stand at different heights so as to have access to the ground level of Filopappos street and a higher level of Panaitoliou street respectively. The connection between these two squares is achieved through an open staircase. The upper level square can alternatively be used as an open stage for an open proscenium theatre that is placed in the most acute angle of the site area. The design of the theatre cells necessitates the construction of a rough-concrete, freestanding wall along the Panaitoliou street, which filters the sound and the light from outdoors and controls people’s access to the building. This wall, therefore, encloses the volumes of the composition, which basically consists of the followings: Three theatrical boxes(two of which are designed to be behind the historical facades and the other one is a four-level tower that serves different public functions, such as the entrance hall, the bar, and the library. An underground proscenium theatre, set in the most acute angle of the site area. A web of horizontal structures, which connects the theatre cells, the theatre cells with the tower, the interior uses of the building with the squares and the open spaces of the building with the city. It is an architectural element that plays a connecting role for the composition and links the private and the public.

The character of the theaters vary depending on the plan, the section and the typology of its space. The theatrical cells can adjust to the various needs of its theatrical play and the willing of the directors. Each of them is designed in order to be flexible and able to change the position of the stage and the seating area, changing the conditions of the theatrical play.

Moving City

Ass.Professor Vozani A. Date: 2011 Location: Instabul, Turkey

This project is an urban design proposal in the old center of Instabul, Karakoy. In front of the seaside area of Vosporos, we designed a wooden structure with some concrete elements (buildings and strong movement axes) on top of the sea. The direction of the project is based on the urban axes and enhances the verticality of the city landscape. On top of the platform, four buildings from the old town are renovated and attached to the new environment. Four new building structures for housing are built on the coastal front. The morphology of the buildings is based on the shipping structures. They have five levels in height and contains apartments in the upper levels and common uses(cafes and shops) at the groungfloor.

general plan

The wooden platform is the basement for two elongated market places and one area for aquatic plants in the centre of the composition. The four housing buildings are modern in design and look like ships that have anchored at the platform. The metal sheets on the elevation of the buildings play the protective role for the privacy of the tenants.

centre of the composition, which links the one side of the plot with the other. The square has two open sides [entrances] and two closed sides [concrete walls]. The openings on the surfaces of the walls are used as entrances to the interior space of the museum. The most important element in this composition is a 21m. high, retaining, concrete wall, which is at the back of the plot. Our wish to connect the levels 0.00 and +21.00 in section led us to put a complex group of volumes and external, freely used staircases, which enclose the central square.

Residential Complex

main idea: volumes escalating in height

Project type: Residence Studio 4: Prof. Mpiris T. Date: 2009 Location: Kerameikos, Athens, Greece

The residential complex is located in Gazi, Athens. The main theme of the design is to connect three units, while ensuring privacy for three households, each with its own lifestyle. The concept of the design comes from the Lego toy. The structure of the building follows three parameters: Firstly, all the houses (three separate residential cells) must be orientated in that way that the front facades are on the south. Secondly, there is a central, open-space in the heart of the site, where all the entrances are located. Thirdly, the volumes of the composition are different in height in order to absorb the sunlight. Rough concrete has been used for the walls, the ceilings and the floors.

3 Storey House in London

Architectural and structural Design Greenwich, London, UK

site & proposal

This project is a house in Greenwich, London that is transformed to get a 3rd floor and an extension on the ground floor. The house changes internally completely and only two common rooms are kept in the original Victorian style at the front side of the site. On the ground floor, a wc is placed under the new staircase construction and an open plan kitchen, designed with a glazed roof extension. On the first floor, there are two bedrooms with the family bathroom and a master bedroom with a ensuit bathroom is on the second floor. An suspended airy staircase links the bedroom levels and rooflights give the necessary light to the master bedroom and the staircase spaces. The design process extends to the stage F-construction details level in scale 1:5. The house is now under construction.

3 Bedroom Flat in London

Architectural and structural Design Shoreditch, London, UK

This project is a 120sqm apartment, located in Shoreditch, London and transformed from a 2 bedroom to a 3 bedroom flat with 3 ensuits. The interior design that suggested, uses the existing huge windows and places the bedrooms along them. The bathrooms are placed at the back side of the flat. The common space (kitchen- living room) is covering the corner of the flat that has a great strret view of the old street and gets plenty of sunlight. The client asked for a solution of three seperate studios (bedrooms+ensuits) that can be rent to housemates or family members. The design process is extended through construction details (stage F) for the partition walls, floors, ceilings, joinery and bathroom and kitchen furnitures. The selected choice is now under construction.

Patio in Chalandri

Architectural and structural Design Athens, Greece

The design of the project lies in the use of physical materials like wood and stones that can transfer the sense of the nature at the terrace space. The Patio is designed according to the needs of a three member family. One seating area is placed at the centre of the space and around it many spaces for trees and plants are located to create a colourful atmosphere. It constitutes a low budget and quick in construction project (one month) that gave us the chance to design and construct our own furnitures (seating spaces) and spaces for plants. Metallic elements, such as the railings and the pipes, are placed to create a contrast with the wood.

Project type: Professional work Re-use study of house Date: 2013-14 Location: Chalandri, Athens, Greece The design of the project is based on the given skeleton structure. The limitations of the budget and the strict building skeleton didn’t allow us to re-shape the general shape of the building. But, inside, we designed three apartments with great autonomy. Each of them has individual entrance and one parking area. The two of them are smaller in scale and developed in a two level composition (apartment b & c) and the other one is located on the third level. The terrace on the top floor is available to use from all the owners. The elevations are covered with stone in order to create a more traditional style that te owner asked for.

The design of the chair is based on the topology and the dimensions that one common pallet has. The goal for us was to design and construct a seating object by re using only one softwood pallet. We suggest the low cost project (20euros) as a commercial object that can be used even in public spaces and constructed easily (5-6 hours) from the users. The chair has moving the back and can be used as reclined chair.

Urban Box - 3rd prize

Project type: Professional work TWO prize awards and SEV program Date: 2011-2015 Location: Monastiraki square, Athens, Greece

Thinking about the structure of the box, the design of the project lies in how easy it is to asemble and transport, and its variability from a closed to an open structure. The basic structural form of the kiosk is based on a ring, which stands on a complex system of tubes.

transforming the box

One of the ring sides is elongated in order to obtain a wider surface than the others and serve as the front facade of the project. The ring structure consists of metallic sheets for the floor, the roof and the connecting wall between them and glass substitutes for the openings. As far as the environmental character of the kiosk is concerned, it is suggested that the front side face south to absorb the sunlight and control the heat. Therefore, metallic motorized louvers are placed in the openings of the front facade and metallic perforated triangular sheets in the openings of the other sides, so as to create a shading system on the glazed facades. The framework of the kiosk is made of aluminum. The structure of the ring has been designed in the spirit of prefab architecture. The aluminum framework Outside, is covered with wavy aluminium sheets Inside, is covered with smooth metallic sheets

Between these two layers the insulation is installed. The openings of the facades are based on a prefabricated system of aluminum frames and Plexiglas surfaces. The tube system consists of six tubes, facing different directions, which are connected with metallic unions. All the metallic elements of the kiosk are placed off the ground by five small concrete pillars, which support and straighten them, thus preventing water from leaking in.
