01 // equipping walls Comprehensive Design Studio / Spring 2016
Equipping Walls focused on the ideas of creating inhabitable and functional space out of normally overlooked architectural methods and typologies. Using the basis of the “inhabitable wall”, the issue of urban moving as a “modern day crisis” for college students and young adults was approached by expanding and exploring the useage of walls as liveable and storable devices, pearing down modern day living to its bare essentials to aid in the fast moving life of the modern day urban-nomadic human.

02
Large scale deployment application (left) vs. Small scale deployment application (right) These two finalized concepts work with the ideas of living as a necessity and as a luxury. To the left the finalized wall system shows potential to be deployed as a temporary living space for crisis relief, the site being a standard stadium or dome. To the right is the same wall system deployed in a specially designed tower to allow for the urban nomad to come and go as he or she pleases, the small space allowing multiple configurations.

DEPENDENT WALL: Consists of everything requiring power/energy sources. Includes kitchen / bathroom program.
04
INDEPENDENT WALL: Consists of everything not requiring power / energy sources. Includes sleeping area, study area, programmatic storage areas.
05 large scale deployement
This study expanded the idea of dependent and independent living units by using the concept on a large scale - in particular for use as a crisis relief method. Since the units were modular and each unit kept spatial properties unique to itself, the two could work in conjunction spatially and conceptually to provide different options for a large scale temporary living space.

07 public/crisis deployment
Studies exploring module deployment and spatial arrangement/development on a large scale (ie crisis situation/crisis housing). Unit types and deployment depended on social, physical, and quantitative needs per program use.

11 // bridging cultures Comprehensive Design Studio / Spring 2015
In an urban setting where we are constantly exposed to external influences, pressures, and unfamiliar experiences, it can be difficult to see and understand the positivity of the unknown in the environments which surround us. With a demographic consisting mostly of college students and young adult professionals, many people in Boston (and other large cities) are in a transitory phase in their life, where futures aren’t set and stepping out of your comfort zone into the unknown is necessary. By allowing one’s self to wander, both physically and mentally, the understanding that giving yourself no direction in order to find your own direction creates an appreciation of being able to step forward into something new. This project blends a public green space, non-denominational meditation spaces, and a public cafe/gathering space. By weaving and wandering circulation throughout the slope and expanse of the site, the spaces are able to be experienced through sequence or through random, allowing for different visits to the same space to create unique experiences.

19 // junk space Comprehensive Design Studio / Fall 2015
Focusing on the ideas behind revitalizing and reviving wasted urban space, or “junk space, this studio combined a vacant site, culinary school, trade school, and urban passageway to reactivate an urban node using innovative program in Boston’s historic Fenway/Brookline neighborhood. Using heavy timber construction as a structure and translucent paper thin materials as a skin, the building strategically reveals itself to the public to bring enough attention for public use but enough intrigue to have return visitors. The entire building and site are connected diagonally by an urban passageway that connects commuter heavy Brookline to the Yawkey train station, allowing the transient public to experience the permanent spaces within from either a direct or indect standpoint.

27 // wilderness urbanisms Comprehensive Design Studio / Spring 2016
Wilderness urbanisms is a comprehensive and experimental design studio focusing on creating architecture from narrative. Moving through the scale of the city, house and the detail, concept and narrative were intertwined in the forms of collage, drawing, digital and hand fabricated models, and animation. Using the idea of memory as a refuge, I explored through digital and physical the space created beetween the tangible and the intangible, the past and the present, and the material and immaterial.
The “nine square layout working through all scales of the project. From top to bottom: site, refuge and detail.
Sacred original collages. Top to bottom: Site, refuge, detail.
28 BELOW: Vignettes of the broken city and elevated dream city. The intangible and the tangible are torn apart creating a space in between to cross to the refuge.
The site of a broken city. The fissure creates a gap between the dream city and the refuge, connected by a narrow bridge. Materials used were cardboard, acrylic, polypropelene plastic, wire mesh, and chipboard.

33 digital fabrication Design Studio Workshop / Fall 2016
This studio aimed to explore the hybrid and combinatino of digital and hand fabrication techniques using the scale of pieces of furniture. Moving up in scale and complexity, from box to chair, techniques and skills such as 2D to 3D and digital to physical conception were utilized and learned. Understanding the limits as well as potentials in flat material stock was crucial to the learning process. Through constant iteration of both form and material, this studio evolved from an efficient way to create to an exploration of physics, material, and the scale of the human body.

45 isgm director’s furniture IKD / 2016-17 Isabella Stewart Gardner Museum - Director Boston, MA DD, SD, CD, Proj Mgmt Working with the director of the Isabella Steward Gardner Museum, this furniture and casework project conceptually was a hybrid to blend traditional and modern architectural ornament and detail. Using the traditional moulding profiles found in the office, the desk fascia and shelf designs reinterpreted the patterns to allow a contemporary design to blend with the traditional space.
TOP: Final clay rendering of the director’s desk. The undulating fascia was modeled after mouldiung profiles in the office. A diagonal cut leads from the corner up to the other edge to accentuate the moulding pattern, and allows the desk to feel lighter in the space.
BOTTOM: Final rendering of the office bookcase and shelves. The shelf supports were modeled proportionately to the size of the desk radii, creating a positive/negative relationship between the two pieces of furniture.

59 tall timber exhibition IKD / 2016-17 National Building Museum Washington, DC Research, DD, SD, CD, CA Timber City was a large scale installation and exhibition for the National Building Museum in Washington, DC. Focusing on bringing attention to mass timber construction and debunking myths of traditional wood construction, this exhibition showcased research and precedent projects from firms around the country. This project was very research and graphic intensive, IKD not only designed the exhibition but curated and researched the information as well. Work was displayed on full size panels of CLT and other mass timber products and methods.

63 “conversation plinths” IKD / 2016-17 Exhibit Columbus Columbus, Indiana Research, DD IKD was selected to propose an installation for a design biennale in Columbus Indiana. Taking from the idea that Columbus’ industry allowed for the implementation of great design, we proposed an installation that would showcase the opposite - how good design could create new industry. The plith was an abstraction of the “conversation pit” in the historic miller house - elevating the people of Columbus who have supported and influenced the formation of a beautifully designed city. The installation will be fabricated and installed summer 2017.

71 mit: arthur ganson IKD / 2016-17 MIT Museum Boston, MA SD, CD This exhibition for Arthur Ganson’s “Gestural Engineering” consisted of a gallery renovation involving detailed graphics and pedestal / exhibition design. Pedestals were designed to allow the pieces to not only float off the ground, but to allow for maximum visual impact of the sculptures. The pieces, being mostly electrically operated and interactive, requried detailed pedestal design to allow for wiring and other compnents to be run throughout.

This is a series of graphics done for Boston based design/build/develop firm Placetailor. Graphics were done for marketing/client presentation/website purposes. Focusing on easy to read, slightly witty, but informational messages, they all work off of the “feature/benefit model where the information is presented as beneficial to the person viewing. These were all part of an overall company style revamp as well.

93 inflatable structures I Independent / 2016
Boston Architectural College Boston, MA Design through Fabrication Commissioned by Richard Griswold, this inflatable project was designed as an installation for the BAC to showcase the school during the two days of Common Boston design weekend. Taking inspiration from 60’s air structure experts Ant Farm, the polyethylene plastic structure was a reaction to the physical and metaphorical principles of the BAC, combining history, materiality, and the people of Boston.
TOP IMAGE: The “balloongoon” fully inflated and installed during Common Boston. The installation drew over 2000 visitors to the BAC over the 2 days it was up.

Boston Society of Architects / ABX 2016 Boston, MA Design through Fabrication Commissioned by Billy Craig of the Boston Society of Architects, this inflatable structure was designed for the BSA Social Space at ABX ‘16. Two large balloons were designed to house a band, tables, and up to 200 people. Fabrication workflow was improved from the first inflatable and allowed for structures four times the scale of the first.

temporary / tempo r ality
definitions ____ tem·po·rar·y ˈtempəˌrerē/ adjective 1. lasting for only a limited period of time; not permanent tem·po·ral1 ˈtemp(ə)rəl/ adjective 1. relating to worldly as opposed to spiritual affairs; secular. 2. relating to time. Latin: tempus, tempor - time > Latin: temporarius - ADJ, suited to/built for the occasion; temporary | transitory; w/ time limit e·phem·er·al əˈfem(ə)rəl/ adjective 1. lasting for a very short time. e·the·re·al əˈTHirēəl/ adjective 1. extremely delicate and light in a way that seems too perfect for this world.
125
Consciousness___ Begin transcription___
...somewhere between a m emory and a dr eam…
What is it to be temporary? Non-permanent? Impermanent. Impermeable? Impressionable? Impressed. Questions? ...questions? Start with the ephemeral ethereal. Two words leave little impression. Define impression:
im·pres·sion
imˈpreSHən/ noun 1. an idea, feeling, or opinion about something or someone, especially one formed without conscious thought or on the basis of little evidence. Back to questions. I’m impressed. You walk through transcribed memories of another world. Somewhere between a memory and a dream. I’ve found reality there. Don’t turn your dreams into reality, turn your reality into dreams. Memories are a construct of time. The ethereal construct. Just wireframe. Structures without substance. Substance without structure. Words with little meaning, but with lasting impression. You dig into structure of words to find definitions to apply to your reality. To understand, temporarily. To live the moment, while moving forward. This is about time. It’s about time this is about time. Is this about Havana? It’s about time in Havana. Havana is only a dream and a memory - until it is a present reality. I found presence in Havana. Presence between the hanging clothes lightly swaying in the wind. Ethereal moments. Wireframe clotheslines and linen shirts. Time passes as we walk. Time passes in Havana. Layers of layers of time turn permanence into ephemeral. Havana has history only due to an ever changing present. The impermanence solidifies itself into the earth. Always a paradox… Dreams of Havana in Boston. Always the ethereal wireframe, always the ephemeral hanging clothes, cloth, linen. Reality fades to a dream and you wake up still dreaming. Reality is temporary.
We find words to define feelings. We find objects in which to impress our emotions. Always walking the line between the tangible and the intangible. The permanent and the temporary, the order and the chaos. Chaos transcends logic. Nature transcends the custom. History ties the two. Layers of moments transcend time. Backwards is forwards just as cyclical is linear. Relativity is objective definition. Open the floor to questions. Questions? Revolution. Define revolution: rev·o·lu·tion
ˌrevəˈlo͞oSH(ə)n/
noun 1. a forcible overthrow of a government or social order in favor of a new system. 2. An instance of revolving Instance : an example or single occurrence of something
126
Revolution is in the temporary. Nothing sticks. We are nomads, I dreamt about collecting sticks. We mechanized time with technology. Linearized. Revert to revolutions. Revolutionize with a revolution. We moved with the moon and the sun and the wind and the sea. Layers of moments to create history. History repeats. Civilizations build and fall. If comfort is found in structure then why do we build to destroy? Questions? If comfort is found in structure then why do we build to destroy? Why do we build? Do we build? We build. Do we? What’s a god to a non believer? Back to reality. Back to a very real dream. Revolution is temporary. The stagnant and static stick and sapiens suffer. Revolutions are realized and the real recedes into remnants of past realities. Clothes must dry. No driers in havana. Structures of clotheslines and linen and wet clothes. Wet clothes in the wind are shelters of our own humanity. We impress emotion into objects. Cleanse your objects with soap and water, enclose yourself with clothing wet from cleaning. Wind dries, washes away the water and emotions remain. We live with the wind and the water and the sun and the sea. The waves are impermanent in havana, moment after moment a wave crashes. Moment after moment the tide changes. The tide is a revolution. The tide moves with the moon. Cycles of the moon. Cycles of wind and weather. We dry our clothes in the wind and let the cycles cleanse our emotions. Revolution is not in reverting, but revealing. Revolutions do not resist. Revolution resists. Resistance or reveal? We revolutionize to reveal. There is no permanence. Permanence does not reveal. Temporary reveals. Only until we do not have the moment do we have time to reflect. Only until we reflect do we know we lived the moment. The moment walks the line between reflection and reality. Tangible and intangible. Layers of temporary permanence, textures of time, revolutions of revealing. We keep moving but we are still present. Move forward but look around. Look forward but don’t move. There is a fine line between listening and losing. Temporary pause : necessary time stamp___3:27pm Breathe...Breathe...breathe
Re-entry : necessary time stamp___11:04pm How do we live without permanence? Open the floor to questions. Questions? Questions?? Consciousness does not wait. Consciousness is not linear. Temporary is a cycle. Permanence is a line. Revolution comes in the form of the circle. Revolution comes in the form of the line. Revolution comes in the form of the temporary. The unestablished. The moving. The ethereal, delicate, ephemeral...not the strong, intimidating, brute. Revolution comes in the form of the wireframe, the substructure. The non intrusive. The unseen, the unthought. Lose your thought, find your feeling. Thought is rational, established, permanent. Thought is logic, mechanic. We are people. We are animals. We feel, we touch, we hear, we see. We feel. We feel. Subconsciously we are fleeting beings. Instinct moves faster than thought, than logic. Follow instinct. Follow the cycles of the world. We don’t need driers. We wash with the water, we dry with the wind. The lines cross streets and alleys, columns and arches. The lines are the ethereal connection of culture. Delicate. Telling. Discreet. Without structure, providing structure. Thought threads, two strangers meeting in the night. Two friends meeting in the day. Give the people the wireframe, and they will find their revolution. The people are the structure. Revolution is in the unbuilt, the intangible, the insecure. Revolution is vulnerable. Vulnerability is open, moving, ready to change. Vulnerability sacrifices thought and logic to the feel, the emotion. People relate to vulnerability. People are vulnerable. Questions. No mind. Back to havana. Back to havana in a dream of the future. Dreams of hanging white tablecloths drying in the wind, suspended by delicate cord, wrapped taught around stiff columns. Columns have age and history. Columns move with texture and wear and time. Columns move with the wind like the cloth moves with the wind. Dreams of the future. The columns fade, lose their texture, lose their weight. No longer are they stiff, strong, straight, but instead are airy, light, as if ready to lift off the ground. The columns dissolve, leaving the tablecloths drying in the wind to suspend themselves in the air, still swaying lightly. The moment stretches as you walk through the expanse of white fabric. Realities turn to a dream. You wander further into the sea of moving linen. Realities turn to a dream. The linen takes color, colors of pastel blues and reds, violets and oranges. You wander further, dream further. Now everything is in full bloom, cloths of strong hues start flap and fly in the wind. The breeze becomes a gust as you reach the end of a

moment. You move forward. The final gust of wind takes the cloths and picks them up off the wires, disappearing into the sky. You breathe in. You exhale. The columns resolve into existence. The texture is back, the layers of time take their place yet again into a familiar reality. Breathe. Revolution is in the temporary. We learn to remember as easily as we learn to forget. We learn to move forward as easily as we know to move backward. Revolution is a conflict within the calm. Revolution is a paradox. REvolution comes not in the past. Not in the future. Revolution is in the now. The now is now the later. This now is now later. The next now is now. Revolution is in the temporary.
