Jeremiah 29:11 In Oklahoma and across the Heartland, storms have been raging in this Spring of 2015. It's been heartbreaking to see people go through so much hurt. I've also been amazed at how strong people can become during these terrible times. In my prayers of strength for so many of these folks, I was reminded of my spiritual life and the unforeseen storm that arrived, without a warning.

While Gene and I were back seat passengers in a car with four people, the driver had a blowout, lost control and we went rolling, a total of five times to be exact, once on the highway and then down a 30' embankment and finally coming to rest, driver's side up.

I'll skip all the gory details but nevertheless it was an unexpected storm. The two people in front had minor injuries. Gene had broken ribs, broken shoulder and many bruises, with other hurts to show up later and I had broken discs in my lower spine and in my neck, i.e. cervical spine, with delayed injuries to come. Gene underwent surgery and was unable to work for 6 months. Wow, what a financial storm that caused. I underwent two different surgeries on my spine and am still in recovery as headaches torture me daily.

Of course the ministry had changed now for sure, cancellations and no traveling for quite sometime.

During so much pain and heartache I found myself asking, "God why didn't you just take us out of this world, we'd be better off". Oh how the flesh loves to whimper!! We are still coming out of the storm but because I know that God kept us alive for a BIG reason, I am beginning to get excited as to what He has for us.

I've been taught that if I cannot survive a major storm in my life then I will not have a major leadership role. We ARE believing in God's love and mercy and the fact that He loves His kids and He did not spare us for.........nothing. After all JEREMIAH 29:11 promises this: "FOR I KNOW THE PLANS I HAVE FOR YOU, SAYS THE LORD, THEY ARE PLANS FOR GOOD AND NOT FOR DISASTER, TO GIVE YOU A FUTURE AND A HOPE".

I have written a whole new project of songs through the past three years and one of them happens to be titled, "God Had A Miracle On His Mind". I truly believe He did for us and He does for you, no matter what your storm may be. Are you preparing for your role through Christ? Remember, "The greater your mission, the greater the storm".

“As believer’s in the body of Christ, we are to share the Gospel. We are to show mercy, not judgement ……..”

He used to come in the emergency room on a nightly basis, drunk as he could be. If this was your first meeting with him, your response would automatically be, “He’s just another drunk looking for a handout”. But that attitude would change once you knew more about him. You see, when you took the time to get to know him, you found that he was actually very nice, not like some who get mean and nasty when they drink. He was always polite, always thankful and never said a mean word to anyone. He never lashed out at anyone, never got angry, never tried to hit anyone. If you really wanted to know more about him, he would tell you.

Turns out he was once a productive member of society. He was a model citizen. He used to be a school teacher, shaping children’s minds, preparing them for their futures. The children loved him, the parents were so thankful to have an educator of his caliber teaching their children.

And then it happened, his wife and children were killed by a drunk driver. His whole world was taken from him in less than a second. In his despair, he turned to the same thing that took his wife and children; the bottle. At first it was gradual, then it consumed him. To cover his grief he would turn to a bigger bottle. Alcohol had taken over his life. Then, one day he quit coming in. We all wondered what had happened to him. The Paramedics informed us that they found his cold, lifeless body one winter night, huddled up by a dumpster at a convenience store.

When we look at the exterior of a person we never really get to know who they are. We miss out on opportunites to share the Gospel because we “pre-qualify” people and then we justify our actions by saying, “They would have never accepted Jesus as their Savior anyway”, or, “They don’t look like what a Christian should look like”.

As believer’s in the body of Christ, we are to share the Gospel. We are to show mercy, not judgement.

James 2:13 says, “For Judgement is without mercy to one who has shown no mercy. Mercy triumphs over judgement.” The Tommy Brandt song says it perfectly, “Mercy brought me out and Grace led the way”. Share His love with someone today. Something to think about.

The Declaration of Independence from www.wikipedia.com

The Declaration of Independence is the usual name of a statement adopted by the Continental Congress on July 4, 1776, which announced that the thirteen American colonies, then at war with Great Britain, regarded themselves as thirteen newly independent sovereign states, and no longer a part of the British Empire. Instead they formed a new nation—the United States of America. John Adams was a leader in pushing for independence, which was unanimously approved on July 2. A committee of five had already drafted the formal declaration, to be ready when Congress voted on independence.

The term "Declaration of Independence" is not used in the document itself.

Adams persuaded the committee to select Thomas Jefferson to compose the original draft of the document, which Congress would edit to produce the final version. The Declaration was ultimately a formal explanation of why Congress had voted on July 2 to declare independence from Great Britain, more than a year after the outbreak of the American Revolutionary War. The national birthday, Independence Day, is celebrated on July 4, although Adams wanted July 2.

After ratifying the text on July 4, Congress issued the Declaration of Independence in several forms. It was initially published as the printed Dunlap broadside that was widely distributed and read to the public. The source copy used for this printing has been lost, and may have been a copy in Thomas Jefferson's hand. Jefferson's original draft, complete with changes made by John Adams and Benjamin Franklin, and Jefferson's notes of changes made by Congress, are preserved at the Library of Congress.

The best known version of the Declaration, a signed copy that is popularly regarded as the official document, is displayed at the National Archives in Washington, D.C. This engrossed copy was ordered

by Congress on July 19, and signed primarily on August 2.

The sources and interpretation of the Declaration have been the subject of much scholarly inquiry. The Declaration justified the independence of the United States by listing colonial grievances against King George III, and by asserting certain natural and legal rights, including a right of revolution. Having served its original purpose in announcing independence, references to the text of the Declaration were few for the next four score years. Abraham Lincoln made it the centerpiece of his rhetoric (as in the Gettysburg Address of 1863), and his policies. Since then, it has become a well-known statement on human rights, particularly its second sentence: We hold these truths to be self-evident, that all men are created equal, that they are endowed by their Creator with certain unalienable Rights, that among these are Life, Liberty and the pursuit of Happiness.

This has been called "one of the best-known sentences in the English language", containing "the most potent and consequential words in American history". The passage came to represent a moral standard to which the United States should strive. This view was notably promoted by Abraham Lincoln, who considered the Declaration to be the foundation of his political philosophy, and argued that the Declaration is a statement of principles through which the United States Constitution should be interpreted.

The Seed Is Your Blueprint

These are the greatest times to be alive if you understand what is going on in the PLANS and PURPOSES of God. God is totally in control and you are safe in HIM. The secret of these days is to be IN CHRIST. There is a difference of "Christ being in you" and "you being IN Christ". Christ "in you" is the SEED which you receive when you are born again. You "in Christ" is the maturation of the SEED. 2 Cor 5:17 --- Therefore if any man be in Christ, he is a new creature: old things are passed away; behold, all things are become new.

(KJV) When you were born again you received the SEED of LIFE, the SEED of CHRIST. For HE is your life. When that SEED of CHRIST comes to maturity, it will look just like Him. I Jn 3:2 - Beloved, now are we the sons of God, and it doth not yet appear what we shall be: but we know that, when he shall appear, we shall be like him; for we shall see him as he is. (KJV) The law of Genesis says that every seed produces after it's own kind. The SEED of CHRIST in you, has in it, HIS VERY NATURE. An old preacher one time pulled out of his pocket the biggest acorn that I had ever seen. He asked me "what do you see here?" Knowing he was asking me more than what my physical eyes could see, I said, "I see a tree". The old preacher said, "Well I see a forest".

HOW FAR CAN YOU SEE WITH THE SEED? The SEED of Christ is in you. How far can you see with the SEED? How far will you allow the growth? To what dimension? If an Angel came and measured your temple (Rev. 11:1), would he find the seed, or would he find the development of the SEED? We all are to be judged by that one measure, - literally the portion of His life.

Eph 4:13 - until we all reach unity in the faith and in the knowledge of the Son of God and become mature, attaining to the whole measure of the fullness of Christ. (NIV) This is just a short message to help you understand that the SEED is good and nothing can stop the SEED. The SEED is indestructible.

I want you to understand that just as a SEED has "in it" the ability to produce after itself, that SEED of CHRIST in you will do the same. The SEED is the blueprint of the future. The SEED is your personal blueprint of your expression of Christ to the world.

Inside an apple seed is a miniature apple tree. It is the SEED that trains the soil. The soil takes instructions from what is in the SEED to bring the nutrients to flesh out what is the difference between an apple, an orange, pear etc...Everyone's SEED when tagged with purpose has the blueprint of a future that is significant to what their need is. Everyone's need is different.

The SEED of Christ in you is a blueprint of the Kingdom of God and your purpose in God's Kingdom. God's plan for the SEED of CHRIST IN YOU, is for you to reach the final stage which is, instead of Christ just being IN YOU (as a seed), now you are IN CHRIST (as the maturation of the SEED).

This place IN CHRIST --- IS --- the DESIRED place of your heart. It is also the SAFE PLACE from any storm that rages. It will KEEP YOU... in days ahead!

HEROES

by Jimmy R. Price www.jimmyrprice.com I have always had people in my life that I considered to be heroes. They were those who had certain values and behaviors that caused me to look up to them as a great example of what I wanted to be more like. Some of my childhood heroes were “good guys” such as John Wayne, Andy Griffith, Tom Landry and even Superman.

Evangelist Billy Graham, pastors, Sunday school teachers, soldiers, policemen and firemen are at the top of my list.

The common things about all of these “heroes” are that they stood for what was right and always looked out for the good of others.

In recent times we see a much different type of “hero” appear on the scene. Professional athletes promoting unhealthy and ungodly lifestyles and encouraging our young people to do the same. All over the news is the story about a man who once was an Olympic champion who now wants to be, and considers himself to be, a woman. His so-called “bravery” in making all this “public,” is seen by many as being a great hero? It is reported on all the networks and made to be very important news. President Obama even “tweeted” how proud of him he was. Is this really what a hero should look like?

We have been doing a Bible Study in the book of Genesis at our church for the past few months. Part of that has been the story of Joseph, one of the twelve sons of Jacob (Genesis chapters 37-50).

His ten older brothers hated him. They wanted to kill him, but decided instead to sell him as a slave.

He was taken down to Egypt and sold to Potiphar, an officer to Pharoah. As a servant, “Joseph found grace in his sight” (Gen. 39:4) and became “overseer” over all his master had. “The Lord blessed the Egyptian’s house for Joseph’s sake.” (Gen. 39:5) Later Potiphar’s wife lied and said Joseph tried to rape her and he was thrown in prison.

While in prison, “the Lord was with Joseph and showed him mercy, and gave him favor…” (Gen. 39:21) God gave him the gift to be able to interpret dreams and he interpreted Pharoah’s dreams to foretell of a coming seven year famine all across the land. God also gave Joseph a plan to store up food during seven years of abundance just prior to the coming famine. Pharoah made Joseph ruler over all Egypt.

Joseph’s family and everyone else were saved from starvation because God used him to carry out His plan. Joseph also forgave his brothers and reunited his entire family by bringing them to Egypt, where they would prosper to become the great nation of Israel (about 2,000,000 people when they left Egypt).

Joseph is a wonderful example of what a great hero really is. Someone who totally trusts in God no matter what the situation is. Someone who gets better instead of bitter. Someone who serves others instead of self. Someone that allows God to work in and through them. Someone willing to die for what is right.

The world desperately needs some real heroes! To point people in the right direction. To bring honor and glory to God. To make a difference in a positive way. To be a champion for morality and serving others.

Joseph is proof that one person can make a difference!

JESUS, OF COURSE, IS OUR GREATEST EXAMPLE! Will you and I allow God to make us a hero?

Star Spangled History

Are you ready for fireworks? What will you be thinking about while you twirl your sparklers or cover your eyes against the deafening "boom!"? What will you talk about while you sit in lawn chairs on the evening of the Fourth of July and taste homemade ice cream and watch the city's fireworks display?

I made wonderful memories on those summer nights, many sticky-hot Fourth of Julys. Sometimes, when my sisters and I went to bed, we could still hear the neighbors setting of their fireworks and occasionally a really big one would light up our windows and keep us awake.

Now, think of the loudest, brightest firework you've ever seen and multiply it by millions. Then, you might begin to be able to imagine what Francis Scott Key saw the night he wrote our nation's national anthem, The Star Spangled Banner.

It was during the Revolutionary War, when many brave men were fighting for America's freedom from Great Britain. On the night of September 3, 1814, Mr. Key and another gentleman named, John Skinner, courageously boarded an enemy ship to try and convince the British to release another friend of theirs, a doctor by the name of William Beanes. While they were on board the enemy ship, Mr. Key and Mr. Skinner overheard the British's battle plans to attack Baltimore. To keep them from warning the Americans, the British forced Key and Skinner to stay onboard until after the battle.

That night, Francis Scott Key stood on the deck of the enemy's ship and watched as they bombed Fort McHenry which protected Baltimore's harbor. As darkness fell, he could just barely make out the outline of the flag still flying proudly over Fort McHenry. As long as the flag flew, he knew that the Americans had not surrendered.

For 12 hours, the battle raged and the small American fort held its ground. In the middle of the night, bombs lit up the sky and rockets flashed through the air. Finally, before daylight, the bombing stopped.

It was strangely quiet, and Mr. Key couldn't see if Fort McHenry had been captured or survived.

Suddenly, very early in the morning, the mist cleared away and Mr. Key caught a glimpse of the red, white and blue flag still flying proudly over Fort McHenry. He was so excited, he felt like singing! Quickly, Mr. Key dug a piece of paper from his pocket; it was an unfinished letter. He began to scribble down a poem on the back of his paper.

Several days later, on September 16, Mr. Key, Mr. Skinner and their doctor friend were released. Safe in a hotel that night, Francis Scott Key finished writing the words to The Star Spangled Banner.

The poem was a hit and quickly put the tune of a familiar song. It was sung in many places and gained popularity, but it wasn't until March 3, 1931, 117 years later, that President Herbert Hoover declared The Star Spangled Banner to be the official national anthem.

Most people know the words to the first verse of The Star Spangled Banner. And most people also know that our country was founded on biblical principles and the desire for every person to have the freedom to worship God as they wanted to. But very few people have heard, or remember the words to Francis Scott Key's fourth verse. It is a beautiful poem that reminds us that God is the giver of freedom, our protector and the one in whom we place our trust.

"O thus be it ever, when freemen shall stand Between their loved home and the war's desolation.

Blest with vict'ry and peace, may the Heav'n rescued land Praise the Power that hath made and preserved us a nation!

Then conquer we must, when our cause it is just,

And this be our motto: "In God is our trust."

And the star-spangled banner in triumph shall wave O'er the land of the free and the home of the brave!"

GunnPoint Who Is The Guide We Are Trusting?

I had the privilege this past year of once again taking a couple of friends into the Flattops Wilderness to scout for Elk and guide them to a good location for a successful hunt. It was a wonderful ride on a beautiful sunny day. No matter how many times I have seen the sights at the top of the world, they always seem to take my breath away and never fail to look brand new again.

This particular ride had a twofold purpose. I was not only guiding friends, but I was guiding a new young horse who had earned the right to go up the trail because of all the mountain terrain he had covered up until now.

The trail to the Flattops is not overly dangerous, but it does have a few spots that need paid attention to. There is one area that has a steep drop-off as you pass by it. It is pretty much straight down. When passing by this spot it is good to make sure you watch your step and guide the horse straight ahead of you. Sometimes young or inexperienced horses can pay more attention to the “Boogie Man� in the rocks or trees around them than the trail they are on. It often puts them in danger as something on their right side can cause them fear and help them to forget the danger on their left.

This day the young horse did fine on that particular spot. It was about 30 feet or so just beyond (thank God) that we almost had a wreck. Around the bend, just ahead of us, came 2 Bow Hunters with huge black back packs that protruded beyond their shoulders at least a foot above their heads, making them look like a bear from outer space. My young horse is pretty used to everything but he never saw something like this, let alone having them move continually towards him. We spun in an instant on that little trail with the steep drop off. There was enough turf for him to grab as I pulled the reins and cued him back up on the trail. I immediately got off and holding the reins firmly, I worked to calm him down.

He continued to try and turn and pull back, which caused him numerous times to go off the trail and start sliding backwards down the hill. I kept pulling on the reins to bring him back up and he would lunge forward to get himself back up to the center of the trail.

The two men on the trail politely stepped off to one side and just sat down. My horse wanted to trust me but he kept his eyes focused on those two bears from Mars. He wanted to back up and turn around, but with every little tug on the reins he would step forward and nervously fidget; not wanting to move forward and not quite willing to let me take full control of the situation. I finally led him up the hill a couple of feet and asked my friends to take my more experienced horses ahead and we would follow.

As the two horses led the way past the men, I was able to lead my horse safely past as he put his trust in the horses he knew well and we had no more altercations. We continued to ride to the Flattops, dropped the camp for my friends and my horse and I made it back home before dark.

I played the scene over and over again in my mind and I thought about my faith and trust in God. Although I knew those backpackers posed no threat of danger to my horse, my horse did not know that.

All he was doing was reacting to what his eyes saw and his fears told him.

His fear of what he did not know overpowered his fear of reality and truth. The truth was he was more in danger of hurting himself very badly and going over the edge of a mountain with down timbers and tree limbs sticking up that could really hurt or kill him. Instead of him trusting my leading, he thought he knew what was best for him, took control, and put himself and other horses in danger. All he had to do was put his trust in me and I would have lead him past the perceived danger calmly and we would continue our journey.

Many things in our life that we don’t know or understand can cause fear and anxiety. When we look ahead in life at what we think is coming at us, if we have never seen it before, it can look very scary. God knows exactly what it is. That is why He wants us to trust and obey Him. We often, because of our lack of trust in God, take control of many situations just to put ourselves in more danger than we even realize.

Even when our faith is weak and our ability to trust God to lead us through the danger is gone, He gives us more experienced Christians, who have been there before and can give us hope and help us through those times. We see how God lead them through it, and then we know it is safe for us to let God lead us through it.

Just like my young horse experienced, our senses can lie to us. They can tell us things that are not true.

When we choose to believe them and put our trust in that belief instead of God we will always put ourselves in more trouble than what we can even know. God says; John 10:4 -. And when he brings out his own sheep, he goes before them; and the sheep follow him, for they know his voice. My horses know the clicking sound I make and they follow me without being pulled, and even through the fearful or unknown situations. They have learned that when I walk ahead of them, where they can see me and the potential threat or danger standing side by side; they can listen for my click and they can trust all will be ok and follow me. We will only know God’s voice if we learn to listen and put our trust in Him. Most importantly, we need to keep our eyes focused on Jesus and not the fearful and unknown things we see. If we can stay focused on Christ, we will see him standing right next to the danger that we think is real, and motioning us to come on ahead and we then can know all will be ok.

God gives His children peace and assurance just for these times. “For God has not given us a spirit of fear, but of power and of love and of a sound mind.” 2 Tim 1:7. That is God’s word to us.

He cannot lie. We must look to Him and trust in Him when scary things come into our life. He knows what it is, where it came from and how to lead His children through it all without any of it bringing them harm.

What Do You Want Me To Know?

- Psalm 46:10 On a recent morning as I was languishing in bed fighting the daily 4:30-5 a.m. mind-over-mattress battle, these were the words that kept rattling around in my head.

While I can’t speak for you, I can speak for me and say that God does not speak in deep theological paragraphs to me – after all He made me and He knows my limited mental bandwidth…especially at 5 a.m.

On top of this, He also knows that the simpler He can make things for me the quicker I “get it.” There was a time in my life that I used to get a nudge from Him and I’d spend hours upon hours seeking, searching and knowing that there was some real deep message that He was trying to get me to see. Through time, I have realized that God does not play hide-and-seek or the hot-cold game with our hearts. He’s pretty straight forward. It took a few years, but I finally realized this fact.

When we examine God’s word, it is full of one clear promise for those that go looking for Him. He does not mince words - “if you look for me, you will find me; I will answer you!”

▪ “I love those who love me, and those who seek me diligently find me.” – Proverbs 8:17 ▪ “…the one who seeks finds…” – Matt. 7:8 ▪ “You will seek me and find me, when you seek me with all your heart.” – Jeremiah 29:13 ▪ “Call to me and I will answer you…” – Jeremiah 33:3 So on this particular morning as I finally gave into the voice that was calling me to my quiet place outside on my deck, I sat back with the question that I never had asked Him about that simple verse – “what is it that You want me to know this morning Father?”

And He answered “I want you to know that…

I love you I love our time together I love to hear you laugh I’ll hold you when you cry I want you to make me a priority I want to hear your heart’s desires and fears I want you to listen I want you to find your peace in me I want you to dance I want you to sing I’m fighting for you Christian Servant Magazine - June, 2015 - Page 15

CASEY BOND Another one of God’s great warriors.

One of the great blessing of my life happened a few years ago in Nashville, Tennessee when I met San Francisco Giants baseball player Casey Bond. Casey was studying acting in the off season and through the course of some fateful events he decided to move to Hollywood and become a movie star. Well he did. Within months after moving to LA he was cast as submarine baseball pitcher Chad Bradford in the movie “MONEYBALL” with Brad Pitt, Jonah Hill, Philip-Seymour Hoffman and Robin Wright. It was one of those things that seldom happens that fast. But he did it!

Casey is a real man of faith. He loves the Lord with all of his heart and looks at his acting career as a way of getting in front of people around the world to share his walk with Christ.

After “MONEYBALL” he went on to appear in the TV show “NASHVILLE,” numerous national TV commercials and a lead role in the wonderful family film “RING THE BELL.” Soon you will see Casey as Hank Williams good friend and Drifting Cowboy fiddle player Jerry Rivers in the upcoming film about Hank Williams called “I SAW THE LIGHT.” A few years ago after the “MONEYBALL” hoopla settled down Casey contacted me and wanted to meet. We met at a local coffee shop and he began to tell me about a film he wanted to develop and produce on legendary basketball coach Don Meyer who went on to be the most winning coach in basketball history after he passed Bobby Knight’s record. As Casey told me the story of Coach Meyer and how this was much more than just a basketball film it didn’t take me long to realize I wanted to be a part of this. From that moment on Casey and I marched down the road to get the film made which we have done. The role of Jerry Meyer is played flawlessly

by Casey and in the very near future the film will be released for the world to see.

Something else happened in that journey. Casey and I saw we had the same vision in the films we both want to make. Films of faith, hope and character. Films that are entertaining that can also change lives in a most positive way. We decided to work together on our future films and formed HIGHER PURPOSE ENTERTAINMENT for the purposes mentioned.

How Much Should I Spend On Recording A Project?

by Chip Bricker As a producer and engineer, I am asked daily, “How much should I spend on my album?”

That is where I start asking questions.

1. What do you want to do with your project?

2. Who do you want to buy it?

3. What is the purpose of the recording?

All of these determine how much you should spend.

1. If you want to use the project to market songs as a writer, then your quality and production do not have to be as finely tuned as a project geared for radio airplay. If you are giving away your projects as a ministry or mission, it does not need to be up to airplay standards. Most well produced songwriter demos can be done for about $350.00 per song just about anywhere.

If you desire to sell yourself and your artistry with the project, then the production needs to be top shelf, and should include all the bells and whistles needed in order to sell the artist to the desired target market. An average price for this type of production is about $1000.00 per song and includes mastering, all musicians, producer’s and studio fees.

If you are a weekend warrior ministry and are not doing music on a full-time basis, then you may cut some of the bells and whistles and do a project style that you know your target market will buy and has bought from you in the past. Don’t add tons of background vocals or extra instruments that are not needed to sell the product or the message to your desired audience.

Probably a budget of $600 per song would do the trick here.

2. We also need to determine if you are wanting your current fan base to buy the album or a new fan base. If you have been ministering for a while, then your current fan base will be interested in the project no matter the quality of the production. They just might not like it as well with lackluster production. But they will probably still buy it just the same. If you are trying to tap into a different demographic with this album, then things might need to be either spiced up a lot or really tamed down for this production. It really depends on the total target demographic. For example… we just finished with a hymns album for a former Miss Texas.

All of her previous recordings had been huge productions with orchestrated strings, horns, choirs, etc. The hymns album was stripped back to just Grand Piano and vocals, with sparse background vocals at that. The obvious target demographic was the classic hymn lover. It has been her most successful project to date. The entire album was under $1000.00. She has sold over 500 physical units in just over 90 days.

3. Please make sure when pricing a project with an engineer, producer or other, that you communicate with them exactly what you want to do with the project. This is probably the biggest mistake artists and minister artists make when beginning a project. You might have a wonderful song that will minister to thousands, but you don’t communicate that with the studio folks and your ministry suffers because of it. On the other hand, the engineer and producer might really like another song that doesn’t have the core message of the project, but they put half the budget in that song’s production because they like the feel of it.

Another good rule-of-thumb is to not put more money into the project than can possibly be garnered from its sale. In other words, why spend $10000.00 on a project when you know you can only do enough ministry events to sell $7500.00 worth. I see that all the time. I lose business because of it. They think I am belittling their talent and faith, just the opposite, I’m trying to be honest with them.

IS THE CHEAPEST RECORDING THE WORST OR BEST? Again this goes back to my first three questions that have to be answered.

I have a songwriter client that does two albums each year of original material.

He is not the greatest singer, but is an excellent writer. His projects average around $2000.00 each.

At songwriter events and ministry outreaches, he gets $5 per copy. He sells about 25 units per event and another 50/month online thru I-tunes, Amazon, Rhapsody, etc. His material does not receive much airplay at all because of overall quality. But then again that is not his desired market.

IF THE RECORDING SOUNDS BETTER WILL IT SELL BETTER? Not Necessarily. Goes back to the question of who is your audience.

You always need to record your project for a specific purpose. Because it is a ministry, know the bounds and constraints of your ministry as well as the bounds and constraints on your abilities as a musician, singer and minister.

Just because it cost more money does not mean the public will like it better.

I close with this thought. Your message is only as good as the way it is delivered and the way it is received.

The main difference between a $25000.00 big budget recording and a $10000.00 recording or even a $2500.00 recording is the power of the message.

Calm, Kind and Committed Music Servant

Howell Simmons

Howell is minister of worship and music at First Baptist, Weatherford, Texas. He was born and raised in Birmingham, Alabama. He received a Bachelor of Music Education degree from Samford Baptist College in Birmingham in 1974. He received a Master’s degree at South Western Baptist Seminary and married his wife Ila in 1976.

Their first church was, Southside Baptist in Dothan, Alabama where they lead worship for five years.

In 1980 they went to University Baptist in Abilene, Texas. They were in Abilene for two years. In 1982 they moved to First Baptist, Weatherford, Texas and have remained there for an amazing 33 years.

In that 33 years, Howell has worked with five different Pastors. I ask him “In 40 plus years of music ministry, how many times have you heard, I don’t like the kind of music you are doing?” He just laughed and answered, “a few.”

Howell is led by the Holy Spirit. He is gifted to choose anointed, inspired worshipful music. He does not talk much. He allows the music to be the message. He skillfully directs the musicians and singers in worship, which truly ushers in the presence of God. The songs are a good mix of traditional hymns and inspired new music. The singers are worshipers. You can feel their excitement to be in praise of the Lord. Ila is a true worshiper. Her face seems to glow in the Glory as she sings. The soloist and the choir are selfless worship leaders.

We have all witnessed the star effect enter into the worship team. Too often the worship leader becomes the lead singer in the praise band and worship becomes a concert performance. Not here. Howell spreads the leadership around to different members of the choir. They do very special and meaningful programs according to the season. Christmas and Easter music is always heartwarming.

Howell is a committed servant. He has people in the adult choir now who are children of choir members from the past. He takes care to see that the older senior classes have the opportunity for special fellowship and fun events.

Calm and kind, Howell is the kind of person who makes the world a better place.

Fishing Where There Isn't Any

"And Jesus, walking by the Sea of Galilee, saw two brothers, Simon called Peter, and Andrew his brother, casting a net into the sea; Then He said to them, Follow Me, and I will make you fishers of men." Matthew 4:18,19 I was reading over a devotional written by David Roper in which he spoke about a friend that he would fish with. This friend would sit on the tailgate of the truck for 15 minutes looking for rising fish in the water. "No use fishing where they ain't," his friend would say. Roper writes that this got him thinking if maybe he was "fishing for souls where they ain't."

When Jesus sat in the house of Matthew the tax collector He was joined by other tax collectors and sinners. The Pharisees questioned what He was doing and the motive behind His actions. Jesus’ response to them was, "Those who are well have no need for a physician, but those who are sick." Jesus knew that He had to be among those who were sinners in order for them to hear his teaching and come to know and love Him. Christians today are so much like the Pharisees. They want to stay in their comfort zone among people like themselves, they only want to be with what we call here in the south "church folk." It is important to be around others who can help encourage you and help you maintain your faith, but if you only stay around “church folk” then you are "fishing where they ain’t."

Jesus told the disciples that He would make them "fishers of men" and the same holds true for us as Christians today. We are to be “fishers of men” and cast out our nets into water that has fish and not sit on the shore being scared of entering the boat.

Fishermen today will equip their boats with high tech fish finders so they will know were to drop the net so it will come in with a large catch. When you are a “fisher of men” you don't have any high tech fish finder, but we know were to look in order to make a catch. We only have to do as Jesus did and sit among sinners and not just among church folk.

In the book "Unchained" by Max Gober he writes about his life as an outlaw biker, a drug addict and an all out "hell raiser." If you are not aware of Max Gober, he is the founder of Canaan Land located in Birmingham, Alabama. When Max gave his life to Christ he went in all out. He would go out each night and tell others about Jesus Christ. After witnessing to them he would take them to his pastor’s house in the middle of the night knock on his door and say, "I got one." The pastor would then lead them through a sinner’s prayer.

Max Gober knew that if he was going to catch fish he had to cast out his net in waters where the fish were. Max didn't sit inside of a church with that “church folk” attitude believing, "If we build it they will come." Instead Max did as Jesus did and sat among sinners. He went into the bars and into all the places were he once hung out. Max is not a white glove Christian. He is not scared to go out into the water in order to fish for souls.

Matthew 18:12-14 Jesus speaks a parable concerning the lost sheep. He explained that if a man has a hundred sheep and one goes astray that he will leave the ninety-nine in search of the lost and how he will rejoice when it is found. That parable speaks of the lost that we as Christians are not searching for. With every soul that we turn to Christ the angels in heaven rejoice. Jesus left the comfort of heaven and came to earth as a man and suffered so you and I could have eternal life. He left His comfort zone and sat with sinners and was ridiculed by “church folk”.

I see so many Christian that refuse to socialize with anyone who is not of the Christian faith. I have even heard someone ask another church member, "What are they doing here?" speaking of a person who they thought was not worthy to enter the house of the Lord. A lot of Christians act as if someone’s sin is going to jump off onto them if they get too close. We have become too concerned with our image and not enough with witnessing to a nonbeliever.

As a young boy we would ride our bikes to the river close to our home so we could fish. The place that was the best fishing area required going through a large brier patch. We would always fight our way through the prickly vines because we knew the reward that waited for us and we didn't want to fish where they weren't any fish biting. After a day of fishing and coming out with our prize it seemed the pain of all the scratches and thorns was well worth it.

When we are fishing for souls we have to go through some brier patches in order to get into the best fishing hole. Our brier patch of life might be those who curse, drink alcohol and many other things, but we have to make our way through so we can make the catch. If you only have friends that are Christian and you only go were other Christians might be, than you may be "fishing where there isn't any."

Being with nonbelievers is the first step in "fishing." Then comes love, a heart of kindness that sees beneath the surface of their off hand remarks and listens for the deeper cry of the soul. If you listen with your heart you will hear that sinner, that friend asking, "Can you tell me more about Jesus, more about what you believe?"

Just think if every member of your church would cast out their nets into waters that they knew would catch souls. If they would just step out of that comfort zone and into the places where a physician is needed and the fish are swimming. As Christians we are to be unlike the world in our behavior, but we must be in it as Jesus was.

www.lifesongmusic.com Buddy and Ina Gore began their journey in the music ministry in the early ‘80’s immediately after beginning their lives together in a very non-traditional ceremony in Hugo, Oklahoma. Ina being from Oklahoma and Buddy being from Texas was like the Cowboys and Indians calling a truce…. Except Buddy says He waved the white flag.

Growing up in Southeast Oklahoma, just across the Red River from Texas in Hugo, Ina says she had the best of both worlds in Oklahoma and in Texas. Having been in Church all her life and singing with her Mother and two of her sisters, a ministry in music seemed to be inevitable. Born in Caney, Oklahoma, she is the second of 5 children of George and Cora Delozier and comes from a French, Irish and Cherokee Indian descent. Music came natural to Ina as her Mother and Dad both were musically inclined. She says she remember as a very young child that people of all ages would come by their house at least once a week and ask them to sing songs for them. They were the old heart songs and songs of struggle that people sang in the late 30’s and early 40’s. “I still remember hearing them sing and I can remember a lot of the lyrics to those old songs” she says. Her Mother taught her to sing harmony when she was between and 4 – 5 years old. Working in radio for almost 20 years gave her the opportunity to see another side of the music industry. Little did she know that working with 18 year old Duane Allen in the 60’s at KPLT in Paris, Texas would one day be a cherished memory.

Buddy was born and raised a Texas cowboy. He started putting those skills to use at an early age by participating in Rodeos and roping throughout the area. Raised mostly by his Grandparents, he learned early on how to manage animals, as his Granddad was the area veterinarian. He was a ranch manager for other Ranchers as well as running his own. Buddy says he was not living the life God had intended for him and as happens many times, God allowed him to get to a place where he had to look up. Leaving a bar one night, he promised God that if He would give him another chance, he would turn his life around.

He went to a local café and there met Ina and things did change almost in an instant. After a whirlwind courtship (30 whole days) they were married and nothing has ever been the same for either of them, for a ministry began that has continued for almost 34 years. Buddy is still a cowboy, still wears hats and boots (has a collection of both), still loves horses too but his dedication to the music ministry has taken him away from the cowboy life he loved and he could not be happier that God chose him for this work.

What a great ride we have had this past 33 plus years and now Psalm 100 is a trio with Buddy, Ina and Jon Beck. Jon plays the keyboard, also plays the guitar. He takes care of all our sound and has a recording studio in his home. He is married to Malisa and together they have 9 children. Jon produces our videos and also does our vocal recording which we then send to McClains Studio for mixing and mastering. And although he is not a teenager, God led him to us from a Church of Christ background which you may think is very odd… but we have learned that God always sure knows what He is doing.

Jon had been unhappy in church for many years not understanding why if music in church was so bad, why did God have given him a burning desire to play and sing… not just any music, but His music? So to satisfy that longing to play music Jon formed and played in a rock band for many years.

And just as happens in a lot of cases like this – Jon hit rock bottom. Trying to make some sense of his life and where he was headed in his mid 30’s, God led him to a Pentecostal church in Sulphur Springs where Buddy and Ina attended. Being a Church of Christ boy in a Pentecostal church should have made him run – but he said he “felt at home!” He did not know one thing about singing or playing or even listening to Southern or Country gospel music - and as they say – the rest is history. He has been with Psalm 100 for 10 years.

Buddy and Ina have 4 children, 13 Grandchildren (1 deceased), 16 Great Grandchildren and 1 Great Great one. Can they remember all their names? Well, sometimes yes and sometimes no, but it’s a lot of fun going through the alphabet trying.

Buddy and Ina tell this story about their ministry: When we began our journey in Music ministry in early 1980 neither of us were spring chickens. We were members of the Local Hopkins County Fall Festival and had already been producing a Gospel SongFest for the organization for a couple of years. Each year we would recruit kids from our church and organize a “stage band” for the show. We had from 25 – 40 individual acts and groups to cross the stage from 6 pm until we got through. And most times when we finished up with the last act and packed up, it was like 3:00 AM Sunday morning. Can’t do it now – but back then we even went to Sunday Church after getting into bed around 4:00 – 5:00 am. We produced the Gospel Songfest for 33 continuous years, before retiring from the Fall Festival Board. Well, back to the story about the kids – we thought our little band sounded pretty good, or at least someone did, because we began to be invited to appear at various churches and local events, and then to places and events outside our own area. We were having a ball with those young kids. We had a drummer 17 years old, a trombone player 14 years old, and backup vocalist as well as lead singer 18 years old, one old man who played lead guitar and a young woman, who had 3 very small children, playing the piano and singing high harmony. Of course, that meant we had to have a bus, which we did buy, and have had one ever since. (I don’t think we will go into detail about that first bus – just too many laughs there to get into.)

Some, and eventually all, of those first members and many since then, have gone into ministries of their own and even one has entered Heaven’s gates – but Psalm 100 has never, in its existence, been without young people in the group, ages ranging from 12 to 30, but always, much younger that we are. It seems that God had called us into that ministry – not just about the music ministry which we loved – but to mentor young people and give them an opportunity to know who they are in God and know what they can accomplish in a music ministry by putting God first in their lives. I’m afraid to start naming them, because I would leave one out, and while they were not all perfect angels – we loved every one of them and yes, would do it over again, given the opportunity. Each one of them came to us with their own set of baggage but when they left Psalm 100, they at least had an idea where they were going and what they desired to do with their lives. I guess the biggest obstacle each of them had to overcome was low self esteem and no self confidence. But a lot of people have that problem and we are so thankful that God brought these kids into our lives, to be able to put them on a stage in front of people who were watching them! They had to grow, they had to become confident, they had to begin to think highly of themselves because their audience loved them and told them so! We brought them in, God did the work!

We are quite sure that God has not finished with us, because somewhere out there is a kid who needs a place to start their journey in the Jesus music that we love so dearly – and Psalm 100 ministry will never stop working as long as God sends young people our way who want to play and sing for him. When our voices finally fade and we can no longer belt out a song in praise and worship to Him – we know that the kids who have come and gone from the Psalm 100 ministry will be holding up the banner and will be there to see that other young people have the same opportunity they had.

Psalm 100 believes that music is one of the few things in life that can cross all boundaries. For 32 years, "Making a Joyful noise unto the Lord," and presenting the Gospel in song and testimony to the concert attendee is a number one priority. Also, having sensitivity to the needs of the Church, gives this group the ability to minister in all denominations as they show respect to the members and their mode of worship. Christ is the focal point of the Psalm 100 ministry with the message that, in Christ, there is hope for the hopeless, forgiveness for the un-forgiven, peace in the midst of the storm and salvation for the lost.

The ongoing purpose of Psalm 100 is to make gospel music concerts available to any church, any size.

Many small churches cannot afford to bring in a national, full time group, but still have a need for Christian concerts for their member’s enjoyment and uplifting. Psalm 100 feels this is a part of their ministry - to go into the highways and byways bringing the message of hope of God’s love, grace and forgiveness that leads people to be saved. Psalm 100 Individual Bios Ina Gore, Co-founder of Psalm 100, grew up with a musical family in Hugo, Oklahoma singing in church with her Mother and 2 younger sisters. She is a song writer and has written several songs that are included on their albums. Her songs have been recorded by several other artists. Along with her husband, she organized PSALM 100 in 1979. Although the band members have changed from time to time, Ina and her husband and ministry partner, Buddy Gore, have never changed the purpose and intent of the ministry. Ina is founder of PS100 Publishing Company (BMI) and Fixed Hearts Publishing (ASCAP) and originated the Annual Gospel SongFest in 1979, and continued for 34 years.

Buddy Gore, Co-founder grew up in Campbell, Texas, plays rhythm guitar, drives the bus and is emcee for Psalm 100. Buddy has a great vision for the Psalm 100 ministry and that, for the most part, was the catalyst for him acquiring a bus for Psalm 100, shortly after the group was formed. He spends a good portion of his time working as PR person for the group. Buddy was nominated and won Promoter of the Year with ICGMA. He wrote the song “Thirty Brave Men,� a tribute to the Seal 6 Team that was shot down in Afghanistan. The song was recognized and well received by the families of Seal 6.

Jonathan Beck plays keyboard and sings and is originally from Southern California.

Jon is founder of LifeSong Music Ministries, plays keyboards, writes and sings. In addition he is the sound engineer and can sing any part making him a great asset to the band. Jon played in the band in high school and has had extensive musical training. Jon also wrote the title track to the album "The First Song I Sing" and has written several songs that are included on other Psalm 100 albums. Jon has an in home recording studio which is a great asset to the Psalm 100 ministry.

Man with a Golden Voice Through the years someone will come along in the music industry that has such a special voice that he or she will be labeled as a vocalist with “The Golden Voice”, such as Frank Sinatra, Aretha Franklin, Jim Reeves, Marty Robbins, Elvis Presley, and the list goes on. They earn this title because of their distinct vocals, always accurately performing a song on pitch with a tone resonance and phrasing style that when you hear them on the radio you don’t have to wait for someone to tell you who they are, the voice is so recognizable, you already know. Singer, songwriter, Mark Carman has that kind of recognizable voice.

Mark was born the son of Edward Carman, pastor of “Ghent Missionary Baptist” in Beckley, West Virginia. At a very early age he knew and loved the scriptures. He is thankful for the Christian home he was brought up in. He told me that as far back as he could remember he not only loved Jesus but also had a very close relationship with Him. Mark learned to play piano at Cranberry Elementary and Parks Middle school in Raleigh County. He would sing and play piano at his father’s church and as he grew older he started singing and playing with Christian groups like the Crossmen Quartet. Mark loved gospel music and continued to work in it until he went to serve his country in the Navy.

After the Navy he took a job in Norfolk, Va. as a police officer. He started singing and playing Country music in the 80’s and it didn’t take long for his musical career to shoot up to the top. He formed and produced the band Heartland, then co wrote a top 40 Country hit titled “Southern Frame Of Mind”. They Performed all over the US, Canada, and Asia.

As I share the story of Mark with you, I am reminded of how the Holy Spirit will pour out blessings that overflow in a life that is willing to serve others and share with them the love of Jesus. Because of Marks early Christian up bringing he always has and always will share that love.

Owen Bradley, one of the greatest Country and Rockabilly producers in Nashville, took Mark underneath his wing and taught Mark everything he knew about producing a great recording session. Mark learned from the “master” and learned well. Once again I’m going to give the Holy Spirit credit for knowing way in advance just what Mark would do with all that he had learned and all of the friendships that he had made in the last few years.

Mark went back to his roots and went full time not only in Gospel music but also ministry through music.

Mark cut a new project called the “Wretch” and to date has released two singles from the CD that have been aired all over the world. “For The Grace Of God” charting at #16 in Cashbox Magazine Country Christian Top 100 and “ The Wretch” which is on it’s way up to becoming #1 in the charts. Mark did not stop there, he has been instrumental in raising money to help build churches in poverty stricken nations. He called on his friends in the music industry to become a part of the ministry to build these churches and they did. Roger Barkley, Jr. A Man of Many Talents Roger began his music ministry at the ripe old age of 4 years of age. He started out singing with his Dad, playing guitar and standing beside his Mom. He’s always loved all types of music.

He’s always been willing to help out his fellow musicians and music ministers in anyway he can. He’s furnished sound equipment and run sound and video for fellow performers many times. Always willing to jump in and do what needs to be done to promote the word of the Lord.

Roger’s vision is to lead as many people to Christ as he can through preaching, song, testimony, comedy, drama and technology. He’s been told he’s following in his Dad’s footsteps, in that he’s preaching more between songs than behind the pulpit. Roger said he’d take that. Add to that list Terry & Debra Luna and their own style of West Coast Country Gospel. The husband-and-wife team of singer-songwriters perform their own material; inspirational songs that are encouraging, uplifting, sometimes fun, some poignant and reflective; all with that “Bakersfield Sound.” “All of the songs come from real-life experiences,” says Debra, “God allows us to share those life lessons and words of encouragement to others.”

Born in Bakersfield, Terry grew up in an exciting time of West Coast country music history, and was influenced by many of the local icons. Terry’s love of guitars was fueled by living only blocks from Semi Mosley’s Mosrite Guitar factory. At an early age Terry knew that God was calling him to the ministry of music; he was deeply influenced by The Christian Troubadours, The Gospel III , The Countrymen, Goodman’s, Hinson’s and the Rambo’s.

Debra comes from a rich family heritage of preachers, evangelists, pastors, singers and musicians in Central California. At an early age Debra recalls singing at her grandparents’ church, often times being lifted to the pulpit in order to see the congregation. Listening to her mother and aunt play the piano, Debra knew that she wanted to learn the instrument and play in church and youth camps, which she accomplished in her early teens.

Terry & Debra met as teenagers, singing in a local Southern Gospel group in the Sacramento area. Their similar interests and desire to serve the Lord through Gospel music drew them together and they eventually married. Blessed with three beautiful children, the Lunas continued to work in their local church as music ministers, worship leaders and choir directors as well as traveling part-time with their groups. “I have enjoyed the journey so far, I’m convinced it’s not quite finished yet,” says Terry, “I am grateful and blessed to be able to write and sing the songs with my best friend.” “I will sing unto the Lord as long as I live; I will sing praise to my God while I have my being. Ps 104:33,” quotes Debra, “One of my favorite scriptures. I have been singing in churches, concerts and conventions since I was very young.

Terry recalls a telephone call in 2011 from a woman telling of her tragic experience as a tornado devastated her home in Central Mississippi. “She tearfully described the helplessness of rummaging through what was left of her home and belongings, only to find her copy of the “Look Up” CD lying yards from the home, undamaged by the storm. She knew the message of the title track on that CD was to look past today’s circumstances, seek the comfort of the Holy Spirit and know that God has us in His protection.” She called to say thank you for the song, it helped her through several dark days after the storm. “Testimonies such as these, and there are countless others, are God’s way of showing us that we are in His perfect will, doing what he wants us to do for this season.” Every song has a story and the duo are often asked to share the “story behind the song” while ministering in church services.

The duo is blessed with five grandchildren that love to sing and play instruments and worship the Lord.

“Yes, God is good!” says Debra, “Our pastor used to say, ‘it feels like God bent down and kissed the earth and we’re right in the middle of the smack!’ We are blessed!”

Terry & Debra have recorded several projects containing all original songs. Five singles have charted in national Country Gospel Charts, two have landed in the Top 5. They are currently writing and recording a new project expected to be released in early 2016.

Movers and Shakers of the Country Gospel Industry

Gene and Micki Farington When I think about those that have selflessly dedicated their lives and have made many personal sacrifices to help make the Country Gospel Music Industry what it is today, two hard working people come to mind, Gene and Micki Farington. When I first met them over fifteen years ago they were a man and wife Gospel Music Duo. They had been Christian music entertainers long before I came into the ministry and I still remember hearing them for the first time. They were awesome. Gene would sing and play hot licks on the guitar and Micki had one of the most powerful bluesy voices I had heard since Timi Yuro. Now I know that I just lost some of you young ones on that name, but look her up on the web and you’ll hear just what I’m talking about.

After that first concert we worked several more concerts together and after each concert we would talk about the things that needed to be done that would bring the industry to the forefront. After about a year of those types’s of discussions I got a call from the Faringtons saying they were moving to Branson and starting a New Christian record label. They named the company Hope Street Music Group. It didn’t take long for the label to be one of the best out there.

They then formed a new Christian music news magazine, known as “Christian Country Gospel News”.

The magazine was distributed at all the music theaters and tourist outlets in Branson, Mo. And now via Internet the magazine is reaching the world.

I have watched the Faringtons go without a lot of things they needed personally including their own personal music ministry to help others have their music played on radio all over America and Europe.

I received a phone call from Micki many years back asking for prayer for her husband Gene. He had been taken to a hospital and was about to have heart bypass surgery. God pulled him through that surgery and I just knew that Micki and Gene would slow down. Not so, after he recovered they started working twice as hard. Gene said he had work to do for the Lord. The Lord had given him a new vision and he went after it.

I forgot to mention earlier that the Faringtons started a new Country Gospel 24/7 radio network called “Country Gospel Connection”. Once again God blessed that project and Country Gospel music is being heard all over the world. Lives are being changed, hope is being offered and those that never knew Jesus know him now because of that radio station. Gene’s health grew worse and Micki’s started failing too.

They moved from Branson to be with family in Florida and enjoy the Florida sunshine. You probably thought I was going to say they retired. That will never happen, they took all the work to Florida with them and they have been at it stronger than ever.

Pray for the Faringtons, pray for their health, pray for their finances, call them after you read this story and thank them for being a strong part of making the Country Gospel Music Industry a very recognizable ministry.
