editor’s letter
The great UCLA Basketball Coach, John Wooden said, “Make each day your masterpiece. Life is now. Not later on.” Coming out of the COVID-19 pandemic, I think many have realized that life is too short and have shifted their focus. I have heard countless stories of individuals leaving their mundane jobs to pursue their dream of starting their own small business or business leaders switching jobs to something “more meaningful”.
On the opposite side, businesses have had to re-strategize how they work with their teams and how they create an inclusive culture that meets each individual’s needs. Yes, making a fair livable wage in Los Angeles is important, but companies that are building benefits far beyond the dollar sign are thriving. I was recently on a webinar where I learned of a company in Colorado giving their employees a 10% “unplugged” bonus if they fully disconnected from all technology while they were on vacation. They felt it was so critical for their employees to have dedicated and uninterrupted time away from the office that they were going to incentivize their team members more to do so. It’s a simple concept that promotes a culture that people want to be a part of.
A company’s core values also drive the culture for its people. Trust & Respect, Welcoming, Collaborative, Continuous Learning and Supportive are the core values that drive our work at the LAX Coastal Chamber. They have been there for sometime, but we are projecting them in any opportunity we get. It is important when choosing an organization or business to work for, or with, that these core values drive decisions every day.
The last few years, I have been so impressed by the resiliency of our business community – in particular, our small and diverse business communities. This year’s magazine is a celebration of the many diverse businesses and business leaders that call the LAX Coastal Region their home for business. I hope you enjoy reading about the special people that work each and every day to make their own masterpiece for you, for me, and for our community.

Small Business Helps Shape Los Angeles
inside four of the Chamber’s small minority and woman owned businesses
Los Angeles is the most diverse city in the world and the epicenter of the most hopeful and optimistic citizens in the United States of America. With more than 224 languages spoken, it truly is a microcosm of the world. It is a place of dreams and hopes – a destination where business leaders and entrepreneurs come to find their place. Los Angeles has become a hub for a variety of industries – sports & entertainment, hospitality, health care, infrastructure, and technology.
As we look forward to the LA 2028 Olympic and Paralympic Games, the eyes of the world are slowly turning to Los Angeles and preparation for the games and the LAX Coastal region will be the “front door” to the world. The LAX Coastal region is a diverse region that stretches from Marina del Rey – dubbed LA’s marina to the north – to the runways of LAX
to the south and bright lights of Inglewood to the east. With these key landmarks in our region comes opportunity for economic prosperity for small, diverse, and minority owned businesses and organizations.
Small Business is the Life Blood of LA County
For close to thirty years, Jack Ochoa, has made a career as a supplier of diversity work chasing the biggest companies in the world to support the “little guys and gals.” It was a career that started with working with the likes of Grainger, Toyota and Aramark as a procurement buyer that would teach him the tricks of the trade in collaborating with local and state governments.
“There are 88 municipalities in Los Angeles County and all of
them buy a variety of things. California is the fifth largest economy in the world and Los Angeles County alone is the seventh largest economy in the world. There is plenty of opportunity just down the street.” said Ochoa.
In 2017, Jack Ochoa started Infinity Government Procurement, a veteran owned small business that focuses on helping small, minority, women, and veteran owned businesses learn to navigate the government procurement process. Infinity GPC helps business owners gain necessary certifications and understand the procurement systems across the Southern California Region that will eventually allow them to scale up their business. To date, Jack has successfully helped
over 2,000 businesses based in Los Angeles County become certified with the California Department of General Services.
Jack’s passion for entrepreneurship and supporting small business started at a very young age while living with his parents in the city of Guadalajara in the State of Jalisco in Mexico.
Jack’s mom, at the young age of 17 was offered the opportunity from her uncle to sell a pig for a bus ticket that would bring her to the United States.
Jack’s parents committed their lives to the American Dream of growing their own small business, but also helping others scale and grow their business. Jack attributes his passion and his desire to want to help others to the
hard lessons that his parents taught him during his childhood.
Along with Jack’s work as CEO of Infinity GPC, Jack also doubles up as a business consultant for the Pacific Coast Regional Small Business Development Center (SBDC) – a federally funded center that provides free resources to small businesses.
Through his work at Infinity GPC and the SBDC, Jack developed a fourweek virtual program that helps teach small business leaders the importance of certification and how to navigate public and private procurement. At the high point of the pandemic in May 2020, Jack brought this important program to the LAX Coastal region. “I saw certification as a huge opportunity
There is plenty of opportunity just down the street.-
for businesses in the LAX Coastal region. I did some research and noticed that there were only 67 certified small businesses in the Chamber’s service area. Helping a small, minority, woman, or veteran owned business get certified in LA County or the City of Los Angeles has the potential to open up new business development opportunities that previously never existed,” commented Jack.
City governments, special districts (such as LAX, Port of LA) and the County of Los Angeles all have procurement spending requirements with certified small businesses –everything from infrastructure contracts to office supplies.
Jack recently was a part of the team that rolled out the Regional Alliance Marketplace for Procurement (aka RAMP). RAMP is the City of Los Angeles’ newest centralized portal where all public entities, as well as private companies, can upload their procurement opportunities. RAMP was designed to help create one master “rolodex“ of certified small, minority, woman, and veteran owned businesses in one location.
One of these certified small, woman, and minority owned businesses is Murakawa Communications.
Trisha Murakawa, Principal at Murakawa Communications, just celebrated 20 years in business working on some of the most important quality of life projects in the Los Angeles region. A certified small, woman, minority owned business, Murakawa Communications has helped bring stakeholders together to find a voice on critical infrastructure projects.
Murakawa credits her success to her parents‘ commitment and devotion to community service. Raised by a fourth generation Angeleno mother and father that hailed from Hawaii, Trisha was taught at a very early age that trust, respect, integrity, service, and passion would be the guiding principles in life. To this day, those same principles have been what has driven her work at Murakawa Communications.
Murakawa has been on the front lines working with key stakeholders in some of LA’s most diverse communities on some of the most impactful quality of life projects that center around transportation, infrastructure, water, and sanitation. Murakawa was fortunate enough to be tapped by LAX ConRAC Partners, a joint venture public private partnership that was chosen by Los Angeles World Airports to build a 6.3 million square foot facility that will become the largest rental car complex in the world. The Consolidated Rent-A-Car (ConRAC) Facility is set to house close to 18,000

vehicles and is the second largest concrete structure in the U.S. behind only the Pentagon.
Most recently, Murakawa was hired by the Los Angeles Metro Transit Authority (Metro) to lead the outreach efforts for the Vermont Transit Corridor Project, which explores bringing further mass transit from Hollywood Boulevard to 111th Street in South Los Angeles. Murakawa and her team’s task – connect with some of Los Angeles’ most vulnerable communities to hear more about their transportation needs. 99% of the communities along the Vermont Transit Corridor were communities of color with more than 60% living below the poverty line. Communities where cars were in short supply and Angelenos were just trying to get to the next day. Murakawa shared, “We spent time in women’s shelters and drug treatment centers along the project site to learn what people were going through.” Her team quickly learned of the major disparities facing Angelenos in these communities. Public safety was a top priority for those taking mass transit – (lighting at bus stops and buses improperly used for shelters and bathrooms). Murakawa continued, “Part of the work we do is understanding the thoughts and opinions of all the key stakeholders in the community so the best and most effective plan can be put together.”
For twenty years, Murakawa Communications has been working with stakeholders to ensure their voices are heard. “It is so critical that we use and look through an equity lens on how we develop and implement our plans. This has been our approach. We must create a way for all stakeholders to be heard,” says Murakawa.
Another minority owned company who shares these same values is Papa John’s-Westchester, owned by Jonathan and James Miller. Some of their main priorities are taking care of people, listening to their customers and staff and treating them like family.
Big Ideas & Entrepreneurship for a Better Community
In 1991 at the young age of seven, Jonathan Miller vividly remembers the Tyson Chicken Food Truck pulling into a parking lot in Dallas, Texas and unloading chicken for his dad, James Miller’s KFC Restaurant. At 10, he remembers being in the back kitchen cooking chicken and at 12 at the register taking orders. A strong education, hard work, entrepreneurship and taking care of people were the life lessons that James Miller taught his son from a very young age growing up in the suburbs of Dallas in the 90s.
Business has always been about how you treat people.
- Jonathan Miller
“Business has always been about how you treat people. When they walk into your store, do you remember them and thank them for their business,” shares James Miller. James Miller’s journey started though much earlier as education opened his eyes to the world. James would go on to graduate from University of North Texas followed by a Bachelor’s in Business in Administration and an MBA from Texas A&M University. From there, it was a job as a Resale Marketing Representative at Mobil Oil Corporation. It was then in the early 1970’s, that he decided he wanted to have his own business. In 1977, James was sponsored by the Buick Motor Division in Dallas, Texas to go through General Motors Development Academy - a leadership training program that would eventually train him to open and operate a General Motors retail new automobile dealership. It was in this program that he learned that if he connected with people on a very foundational level, nothing would stop him. James went onto to be the top car salesman at Ken Pruitt Buick and would eventually sell the most Buick vehicles in the 1980’s in the state of Texas. Eventually, James found his way into the restaurant business and in the 90’s was the very first black franchisee of both a KFC and Taco Bell Fast Food Restaurant in the State of Texas. His success would continue to multiply and in 2002, would be called upon to be the trailblazer of a new concept the “2 in 1” fast food restaurant when KFC would partner up with Taco Bell. All the while, his young son, Jonathan was looking on and learning from his hardworking father.
Fast forward and all grown up, Jonathan Miller has taken the leap of moving to the West Coast – a place where bright lights and dreams come true for entrepreneurs with big ideas. Jonathan graduated with a degree in Business from Pepperdine University. While in school he would develop a company called Recess that would connect college students with the music nightlife of Los Angeles. Upon graduating from school, Jonathan gained a diverse set of work experiences that taught him financial analytics, sales, fashion and tech development. He was a part of the early teams that developed what eventually would become Match.com and the dating application famously known as Tinder. All of this would eventually lead to Jonathan and his dad coming into business together forming, A NU-DAY LLC, opening their first franchised restaurant together – Papa Johns Westchester located on 5654 Manchester Avenue in 2019.
Their mission and goal with their restaurant: How can we leverage pizza as a way to impact and improve the local
community. “When I first met James and Jonathan, I knew they were a special dynamic duo that were going to do something special. They understood that having a food establishment in the community was more than just feeding people. When people walked through the door, they were a part of their family. To this day when I go into Papa Johns Westchester, I see James, Jonathan and the staff team refer to their customers by name,” comments LAX Coastal CEO/ President, Chad Maender.
James and Jonathan have built a small, but mighty team of 10 that helps run the Papa Johns in Westchester, but they have bigger dreams for how they can impact the local community. Approximately 12 months ago, Jonathan started a community benefit program to help area schools called “Split a Slice”. The concept is simple – an oversized slice of pizza for sale with half the proceeds going back to Papa Johns and the other half going right back to the school. Over the course of the first year in collaboration with St. Bernard’s High School, Papa Johns Westchester has helped them raise close to $20,000.
Be on the lookout for some new and innovative ideas from the team at Papa Johns – Westchester. They are hoping to improve the community one pizza at a time.
Just down the street from Papa Johns in Westchester is Airport Marina Counseling Service (AMCS), which is also doing some incredibly impactful and inclusive work at such a critical time in our LAX Coastal region. As the needs for mental health services continues to climb in Los Angeles, they are on the front line of the mission of ensuring every community, regardless of their ability to pay, has access to mental health services.
Airport Marina Counseling Service started in 1962, by a group of local community-based leaders that saw the need for local mental health services. Rumor had it that Mary Ellen Cassman was doing a routine drop off at Westchester High School and met a parent that needed counseling services. Mary Ellen learned that she was traveling 30 minutes each direction to a clinic. Mary Ellen went back to her husband, the late Alan “Bud” Cassman, and said we need to do something. The Cassmans, along with some other community members, pooled some funds together and started AMCS. From there the organization grew and grew. Mary Ellen Cassman, now 99 years old, still lives in Westchester and is involved in supporting the great work at AMCS.
Sixty years later, AMCS has morphed and changed with the times. Eight years ago, Eden Garcia-Balis took the reins of the organization to lead it through an important chapter of its history. AMCS is the perfect intersection for Eden as it brings community and mental health together. Eden believes her professional journey has prepared her for helping to elevate and continue to take AMCS to the next level. Eden’s career started as a Marriage and Family Therapist working in cities like Watts & Wilmington providing in-home services followed by an important stop as the Executive Director of Pasadena Mental Health Center.
Airport Marina Counseling Services provides important services to youth starting at age five all the way up to adults. Annually, AMCS serves 1,300 to 1,500 clients with an average of about six months of services. AMCS has continued to be a safe place for individuals of all ages and walks of life to gain the necessary support they need to thrive. 70% of all AMCS clients report that they have met and exceeded their goals after ending therapy.
Along with AMCS providing needed mental health services to the community, it also serves as a place for therapists to train to complete their hours for their certificate and degree programs. In 2018, this endeavor of being a training nonprofit organization was taken a step further as an important partnership was formed with Antioch University working closing with LGBTQ+ community. Under the leadership of Dr. Mimi Hoang, the LGBTQIA+ Affirmative Therapy Center was born at AMCS. As one of the few centers in Los Angeles that specializes in psychotherapy for lesbian, gay, bisexual
and transgender folks. The LGBTQIA+ Affirmative Therapy Center welcomes all cultures, ethnicities, sexual orientations and gender identities. The Center has become so popular that individuals are sometimes waitlisted to be seen.
The service that AMCS provides is vast as it provides individual counseling, couples counseling, family therapy, cognitive behavioral therapy, in addition to on and off-site groups. AMCS also has partner organizations where they bring their services and programs out to the community at the Westchester Family YMCA, the Boys and Girls Club, The People Concern and Helen’s Room.
Eden shared that she is incredibly proud about how far AMCS has evolved, but knows there is still much to do. “We are recognizing the importance diversity plays in our community.” AMCS, along with many organizations, are standing up and playing a major role in supporting those needs. As a fluent, spanish speaking Latina, I am also grateful to see the diversity of our community continuing to change. The LAX Coastal region continues to be a melting pot of small businesses and large businesses that are helping bring economic prosperity.”
Small and diverse businesses are the heartbeat of our community and ultimately it is what makes Los Angeles what it is today. As the business community continues to emerge from the dark days of the pandemic, we know that the brightest of days are still ahead. We must all continue to be “change agents” for a better and more inclusive tomorrow.
We are recognizing the importance diversity plays in our community.

The Honorable Holly Mitchell
213.974.2222 | mitchell.lacounty.gov
Supervisor Holly J. Mitchell represents two million residents of Los Angeles County’s Second District, including the neighborhood she grew up in Leimert Park, along with the cities of Carson, Compton, Culver City, El Segundo, Gardena, Hawthorne, Hermosa Beach, Inglewood, Lawndale, portions of Los Angeles, Manhattan Beach, Redondo Beach, and many other unincorporated communities.
Supervisor Mitchell has been instrumental in creating an equitable health and economic recovery plan after the Covid 19 pandemic. One of her main focuses is alleviating poverty, not just in CA, but nationwide. She not only passed a landmark nationwide guaranteed universal income program, but also made L.A. County the first to phase out urban oil drilling and is actively working on the mental health crises among the unhoused.
Mitchell is a third generation Angeleno whose parents were both public servants. She has helped pass more than 90 bills during her time in the CA Legislature, including the landmark anti-hair discrimination law, the CROWN Act, which made CA the first state in the U.S. to pass this law. She also helped the state of California build financial reserves with three consecutive state budgets, each totaling over $200 billion.
In addition to the Los Angeles County Board of Supervisors, Mitchell also serves on the boards of Los Angeles County Children and Families First (First 5 LA), Los Angeles County Metropolitan Transportation Authority, Los Angeles Memorial Coliseum Commission, L.A. Care Health Plan, and Los Angeles County Sanitation Districts. Supervisor Mitchell was awarded an honorary Doctorate Degree of Humane Letters from Charles Drew University and is a proud UC Riverside Highlander.
Mitchell leads with a deep understanding of the vital safety net LA County provides to millions of families and is committed to ensuring that all residents can thrive.

DEIA Corner
Making a Meaningful and Sustainable Commitment to Diversity, Equity, Inclusion, and Accessibility
In October of 2020, inspired by the spotlight on issues of systemic racism and racial injustice taking place across the United States, the LAX Coastal Chamber of Commerce formed the Diversity, Equity, Inclusion, & Accessibility (DEIA) Ad Hoc Task Force. This effort was led by Chamber board member Rashmi Menon, Burns & McDonnell and past chairman Ryan Gales, JGM under the leadership of the 2020 Chairman of the Board, Jon Lonner, Burns & Bouchard.
This group was tasked with analyzing current trends in business, gathering information, and exploring opportunities to create programming to support the business community through the lens of DEIA. All efforts needed to be meaningful, manageable, and sustainable with an explicit commitment to the DEIA effort.
The first step was defining what DEIA meant to the Chamber, its leadership, and members. Diversity includes all the ways in which people differ, encompassing the different characteristics that make one individual or group different from another. Equity is the fair treatment, access, opportunity, and advancement for all people, while at the same time striving to identify and eliminate barriers that have prevented the full participation of some groups. Inclusion is the act of creating environments in which any individual or group can be and feel welcomed, respected, supported, and valued to fully participate. Access is a commitment for everyone to be included in all programs and activities and allows people the opportunity to maximize their contributions.
Through this exercise, it was unanimously agreed and confirmed by the board of directors that DEIA was a foundational principal of the Chamber, and its integration was critical to the success of all businesses while supporting the Chamber’s mission to enhance the vitality of community. Furthermore, after an extensive strategic planning effort led by current Chamber Chairman, Joe Coleman of Decron Properties, it was again validated that DEIA
was an important and necessary next step to creating a stronger business climate for the Chamber and its membership.
Today, DEIA is part of the fabric of the LAX Coastal Chamber of Commerce. It has been thoughtfully woven into the Chamber’s culture and continues to stay centerstage in its programming and educational outreach.
This year, Ravi Singh, Crown Consulting, Inc.; Laura Ware, Flour, and Mary Taylor, PVJOBs, are leading the charge of the DEIA Committee. This group comprised of business leaders from large corporate companies to small mom-and-pop businesses are working together to move the needle in an effort to support a more diverse, equitable and inclusive workforce and business culture. Their work includes programming, marketing, education, leadership initiatives and more.
To find out more or to get involved in the Chamber’s DEIA initiatives, contact Chamber President/CEO, Chad Maender at 310.645.5151 or chad@laxcoastal.com.

Jenkins/Gales & Martinez, Inc.
310.645.0561 | www.jgminc.com
As a kid, Ryan Gales enjoyed tinkering with Legos and Transformers. Today, he is building on a much larger scale as the CEO of Jenkins/Gales & Martinez (JGM). Started by his father, it is one the of the largest minority-owned (and family-run) firms in their field. JGM offers services in six major categories: Project Management and Control, Urban Design and Architecture, Construction Management, Engineering, Transportation and Transit Management, Urban and Regional Analysis and Planning. They have worked on many major projects in California and around the country including schools, stadiums, and airports.
Ryan is most proud of working on airports because he says they are like “self-contained cities.” JGM has many projects at LAX, JFK, LaGuardia, Ontario, and Indianapolis, among others. The educational system in California has also benefitted from Ryan and his team’s expertise, as they have either built from scratch or remodeled many schools across California. In addition, they work with many major institutional facilities, commercial buildings, transit/transportation, public works infrastructure, and housing. A primary benefit of hiring JGM is that they are a smaller family-run business and can make decisions quickly. They see projects through from beginning to end. They are also proud to offer both architecture and construction management at one firm!
Ryan would like to see the company grow, but in a smart and targeted way. As a massive sports fan, one of Ryan’s favorite projects is the Banc of CA soccer stadium in downtown L.A. He would love to do more stadiums in the future. Ryan and his company pride themselves on living by a few rules. As his grandfather taught him, “A man is only as good as his word.” Ryan says that if they say they are going to do something, they will do it and do it well. He also says that they would rather lose money than do a bad job. JGM and their team have a proven track record of meeting their client’s needs, on-time and within budget. So, if you have any kind of building needs (especially a sports stadium for Ryan), Jenkins/Gales and Martinez is available for any small to massive commercial projects, and they will get the job done, and done well!

From film student in college to a Compton crime scene photographer to a Certified Professional Photographer, Mike Harriel knows how to tell a story with just a photo image that will resonate for a very long time. Mike has captured and created photographic images for more than 30 years. He takes photos that inspire memories, thoughts, and emotions. He truly captures the essence of people, places, and events.
Mike transports your imagination into the beautiful landscapes he captures, as well as capturing the characteristics of the people he photographs.
If you hire Mike, you are not only guaranteed a professional, but he will ask a lot of questions to find out exactly what you want out of the photos and what they will be used for. He will offer creative suggestions and scout the locations at the exact time of day prior to events. He takes all kinds of photos including personal portraits, corporate and commercial projects, brand enhancement, media
campaigns, unique destinations, landscapes, and special events. Mike’s images can be put on metal, quality paper, acrylic and linen. Currently, he is preparing to photograph a personal portrait project called “Dads and Daughters.” It’s a pictorial on relationships between fathers and their daughters, a subject close to his heart since he is a Girl Dad of five! He hopes to release the pictorial book in 2023, around Father’s Day, with more pictorials to follow.
Mike wants you to know he is available and open for conversations to see if he is a good fit for your photographic needs. Even if you don’t need a photographer for something special right now, his wall art is available for sale to use in your office, reception area or home. He has an amazing collection of landscapes and nature in which the observer can mentally escape to the beautiful locations.
He will always give you quality work and his main goal is “Capturing images of your important moments that need to be seen, kept and remembered.”
education
It was 1974 when Maria Davis was working in the Inglewood School District and decided to start her own daycare, so she could be home with her own kids. What started as a little in-home daycare grew into what is now called the Carousel School. It includes not only an infant center and preschool for the typically-developing and special needs/disabled children together, but also a nonpublic school for elementary through high school students, an adult program, and many other services for special needs/disabled people from ages 0-55. When they just had four locations of preschools in the 1990’s, Maria was asked to take care of a four-year-old child with Autism. Maria soon realized she needed various therapists to help. It was a great opportunity for kids with disabilities to be with their typically developing peers, an experience she says money can’t buy. At the time, the policy was for kids with disabilities to be in typical daycares, so many more disabled kids began to come to Maria’s program.

When the special needs kids aged out of preschool, they would leave to go to a school for children with disabilities. Maria knew she could do better, so she opened her own nonpublic school for them. The school grew and grew due to the demand. They hired a specialist from India, who had a method of teaching nonverbal children to type answers and use pictures to communicate. With this method, Maria and her team found that the nonverbal kindergarten kids were extremely intelligent. Carousel School and their success even made it onto “60 Minutes”! After the airing, Maria’s email blew up and everyone wanted to send their children to Carousel. Maria then expanded the school through high school, and later added an adult program too. In the adult program, they learn life skills and help with charities such as Meals on Wheels.
There are so many success stories. One child wouldn’t speak or do anything when she came to the school. Now as an adult, she is a spokesperson for Unicef and has won five gold medals for the Special Olympics. Another nonverbal boy got on stage to sing the song from Aladdin, “A Whole New World.” Everyone has something to give the world, and Carousel provides kids a chance to find their gift.
Although the school is government-funded, they need more money for the added expenses due to new requirements and rising costs. They graciously accept donations if you would like to contribute to help Maria and Carousel’s goal, “to give every child a chance and help these children and adults achieve their highest potential possible.”

Paradise Bound Yacht Charters
310.305.8884 | www.paradiseboundyachtcharters.com
If you hear a trumpet playing near the Ritz, it’s probably Captain Alex Balian from Paradise Bound Yacht Charters! You can find Capt. Alex, his wife Marlene, the Silver Eagle (his 42’ sailing yacht), and his trumpet docked right outside the Ritz Carlton in Marina del Rey.
Captain Alex served in the U.S. Navy for 27 years, 4 commands, 15 Navy ships, and 22 countries worldwide. He knows the sea! After retiring from the Navy with a silver star for being shot at, sunk, and escaping with his crew in Vietnam, he returned to southern CA. He knew his passion was on the water and moved from military service to “paradise.”
Founded in 1990, Paradise Bound Yacht Charters has about one thousand charters a year. The 42’ sailing yacht holds six people plus Capt. Alex, who skippers, and his wife, Marlene, who is the “hostess with the mostess”! They own the business and do all the work themselves, so they know it’s done right! “With the wind in their sails,” they mostly sail the coast from Marina del Rey to Venice, Ocean Park, Santa Monica, and Malibu. They are a full-service company and can host weddings (Capt. Alex is licensed minister), burials at sea, corporate events, romantic cruises, sailing trips, fishing trips, etc…. Capt. Alex says if it’s legal, they do it! And if you have more than six and up to 300 people, he can accommodate you with access to larger yachts too.
Not to toot his own horn, but Capt. Alex says, “there’s no better way to see the coast than on a sailing yacht with Captain Alex.” And after 32 years, they have no plans of retiring; they love what they do and want to share it with everyone. So, “come sail with the best!” Capt. Alex will even play his trumpet for you…when appropriate!

KVG Insurance Services 424.371.8965 | www.kvginsurance.com
As a proud Westchester resident for over two decades, Karla Garcia has recently ventured out on her own as an Independent Agency Owner for KVG Insurance Services. She has peripherally been around the Chamber for many years and was excited to become a member with her own business. She has jumped into Chamber life with both feet, by becoming a sponsor of the 4th of July parade (which she has attended every year) and even donating her husband’s classic cars to use in the parade.
Karla began her career in accounting, but after working part-time for a family member in insurance, she knew that was her calling. KVG handles a lot of Home and Auto Insurance and is also finding a niche with Workman’s Compensation. Karla is passionate about helping small businesses succeed and protecting them and their employees. Her goal is to help her community protect what they’ve worked so hard for. She is so involved in helping small businesses in our community, that she even has her own Facebook group, Silicon Beach Word of Mouth. She wants to bring people together, connect them and highlight their businesses (kind of like the Chamber does!).
A transaction she is most proud of was when she helped a woman who was starting a daycare get insurance (which, strangely enough, doesn’t legally require insurance.) The woman couldn’t afford much, but Karla was able to find an inexpensive policy with great coverage. She also referred some of her friends’ children to become clients of the daycare! One of the strangest requests Karla received was insuring a car with the owner’s artwork on it. They wanted the artwork on the car also insured…no carriers wanted to take that on.
Karla says that one of the biggest challenges with her business is knowing when a client isn’t a good fit. She is a very digital agency, sending proposals through video and documents to sign digitally. Karla has found that some people really like paper and even want to pay her in cash. She doesn’t think that’s a good fit for her company. The advice she gives people starting in the business is to know who your ideal client is. Karla works with many small businesses, and then ends up doing personal insurance for them too.
Karla Garcia at KVG Insurance is a great fit for you if you are looking for personal attention from a broker who is dedicated to finding you exactly what you need in coverage and cost, and/or if you are a small business wanting to protect your employees and business. Karla’s goal with her clients is providing “peace of mind.”

Benny’s Tacos & Rotisserie Chicken 310.670.8226 | www.bennystacos.com
In 1972, when Benny Borsakian was just a child, he and his parents came to America from Romania, with only $400 in their pockets. They were hungry. Benny says it’s not fun to be hungry. As just a kid, he vowed when he got older that he wanted to feed people. It makes him happy to see people eat.
It began when Benny was working for the family business in cosmetics and wanted to make extra money. He decided to buy a Johnny Rockets in Agoura Hills. This is where he says that he learned so much about the restaurant business through the courses and classes they had to take. After a few years, someone offered a nice amount to buy his restaurant, so he couldn’t pass it up. He realized he really loved the restaurant industry, but wanted to keep it simple, like Johnny Rockets. His love of Mexican food was perfect, and he found a location in Venice. That’s when Benny’s Tacos began!
Then, someone made an offer to buy the location and he needed to move. Benny was reading an amazing article in the Argonaut about a cook at a taco restaurant in Westchester who saved a child from being abducted from the park across the street. Not only was it a wonderful story, but in the picture, the sign on the taco restaurant caught his eye. He went to talk to the current owners who told him he came at the perfect time as they wanted to sell the restaurant. It was a mess, the location needed work, and the restaurant wasn’t making any money. Benny fixed up the location, served his fresh made-to-order Mexican food, and it became a huge success. Such a success, that he opened another restaurant in Santa Monica and found some wonderful partners. Josh Rabbie is an experienced chef who has worked in Europe and various culinary restaurants in the U.S. He oversees some of the most important aspects of the business including schedules, monitoring food, etc. Darius Tahmasebi, a business manager with vast experience in the restaurant business, maintains all the equipment in three locations, day and night. When the Santa Monica restaurant proved successful, they opened another restaurant in Culver City. They are currently looking for space in West Hollywood for restaurant number four!
Their food is ALWAYS made-to-order with only fresh, quality ingredients and served in large portions. Even with the hard economy, they don’t skimp on fine ingredients or portion sizes, like many other restaurants are now doing. They make everything from scratch, including their three different salsas (that aren’t as easy to make as Benny first thought
it would be!) Benny’s is more than just tacos; they also serve burritos, quesadillas, rotisserie chicken, soups, salads, enchiladas, and breakfast dishes. You can eat at the restaurants, take home orders, use one the many delivery services they work with, or cater an event or party. They cater for huge companies such as Delta and Google. Additionally, they are an approved vendor for LAUSD, and provide burrito lunch boxes with safety seals to hospitals, fire departments, etc.
Benny and his team are also such generous and valuable members of our community. They give back in so many ways, including hosting school, kids’ sports, and various charity events where Benny’s donates back 15-20% of proceeds made on a certain day. Not only is Benny’s heart big, but so are his burritos – you can’t beat Benny’s for great, fresh, quality Mexican food!

Universal Cargo 424.888.7959 www.universalcargo.com
In 1985, Devin Burke began his career in Freight Forwarding, a relatively new business, which has only been around since the 1970’s, when the U.S. began importing more from Asia. In 2000, he bought Universal Cargo Management, and his wife Shirley joined him as the office manager. Today, they even have two of their sons working there, so it’s a real family business.
Freight Forwarding is the middleman between shipping/air transport and importers/exporters. They handle everything involved in getting freight on/off ships and planes and to their final destination. Universal Cargo Management (UCM) has primarily been in the ocean freight business, managing cargo all over the world, mainly from Asia. UCM specializes in full containers and imports (some exports). Their niche has been cargo out of China and Southeast Asia, mainly home furniture, lighting, décor. Most of their furniture importers are small to medium companies in the Midwest and on the East Coast…But the sky’s the limit for UCM, as they are launching their new air freight division, hiring experts in that field who will transport a variety of products.
Why choose Universal Cargo? As Devin says, “We have a culture. We seek to enrich the lives of those within our company and those we do business with.” They know that a happy employee also makes a happy customer. They take care of their staff in many ways, through good pay, celebrations, contests, etc. The owners and staff really CARE and live by their core values: C-customer service, A-availabilty, R-resourcefulness, E-evolving.
They find that most of their competitors outside of the U.S. usually don’t care about customer service, but more about low rates. At Universal Cargo Management, they really care about their customers, are solution-based, and are fun to do business with…They also plan to be flying high this year with their new air freight division.

Ashfit Solution
929.274.3481 | www.fitashley.com
From using a walker to becoming a warrior…In 2011, Ashley Shaw had a flourishing career as a Deputy Sherriff in the Los Angeles County Sheriff Department. She was being groomed for the SWAT Team and receiving a huge promotion. While driving to a team meeting, a speeding car ran into her and ended her career. She had to have neck and back surgery; she could barely walk and used a walker. Doctors told her that she would never be able to do much more than walk.
Ashley was challenged by this and determined to prove those doctors wrong. After she taught herself to walk again, and despite chronic pain, struggles with depression and a diagnosis of Fibromyalgia, Ashley transformed her own life and AshFit Solutions was formed.

Ashley is more than just a certified personal trainer. With a degree in Psychology and an MBA, she is also life coach, fight trainer, nutrition coach, lifeguard/swim instructor, motivational speaker, and bestselling author. She believes being fit includes the Mind, Body, and Soul. They are all interconnected. Ashley really gets to know her clients, what makes them tick, and taps into their experiences to get the best out of them. Ashley can relate to her clients. Having been through chronic pain, trauma, being chubby and teased about looks as a kid, Ashley says she IS the person she trains. Her clients know if SHE can do it, so can THEY!
As far as nutrition goes, Ashley is co-partner/owner with her husband in the meal prep business, Good to Go Food Prep, which delivers fresh, healthy meals. With their team based out of Orange County, they make it a priority to give back to the community by hosting their own food drives and working with the unhoused and relocation shelters.
Ashley is proof that you can defy the odds, overcome many obstacles, and do whatever you set your mind up to do. She says it’s never too late to make a healthy lifestyle shift and it’s not as hard as you think.
Ashley is an inspiration to us all! She wants to help the healthy lifestyle movement grow. If you are interested in creating a healthy life (physically, mentally, and emotionally), know it’s never too late to overcome any personal challenges and become Ash Fit too.

All Level Installations of Finish Carpentry Inc. 424.336.6364 | www.alllevelinstallations.com
“From Vision to Reality,” family-run All Level Installations of Finish Carpentry, Inc. installs finished carpentry such as millwork, doors, windows, trim work, moldings, cabinetry, paneling, siding, decking and the interiors. Catering to mainly mid-scale commercial buildings and also homeowners, Martin Estrada, a Hispanic first generation American, is the first business owner in his family.
Martin’s grandfather used to build houses. He would join him when he was a child but didn’t think he would pursue this kind of career. He fell into the business while he worked for a moving company and a carpenter friend offered him a job. Martin fell in love with the business. He much preferred Finished Carpentry over just moving people in/out of homes. He found his love for making things with his hands and just went on from there.

Martin started his career in the Carpenters Union and decided to launch his own company in 2015. He loves to create things from scratch. He and his crew can take a few pieces of plywood and hardware, and create something beautiful, making something out of nothing. With a team of up to 15 installers, Martin Estrada is the lead contractor at All Level Installations. He has five children and hopes that one day they will want to take over the family business.
All Level Installations works one-on-one with the building owners, contractors, or homeowners and caters directly to the client, making changes depending on what the clients wants. All Level buys all their materials wholesale, with no markup to the customer. Martin says it’s about the craftsmanship, not about the profit. Martin is very meticulous and likes to see projects done 100 percent. He wants to see a fine final product and make his clients happy.
Martin would like to grow the business and get even more large company, commercial and government contracts. So, especially if you have a large building project, and want an honest, talented, reputable, hardworking company to install finish carpentry, give All Level Installations a call!

Law Office of Edgar Saenz 310.417.9900 | www.edgarsaenz.com
Birth and death, love and divorce, money and taxes – Edgar Saenz’s law practice revolves around life’s milestones. Some boys want to be firemen and astronauts when they grow up. All Edgar ever wanted to be was a lawyer. After all, he knows everything about the law from watching Perry Mason...and attending Stanford Law School.
He began his career in Los Angeles as a trial attorney, followed by an appointment to government service (deputy to Rep. Maxine Waters), before starting his Westchester practice devoted to trusts and estates. In addition to estate planning, he assists clients with trust and probate administration and conservatorships. One of the satisfying elements of his practice is working with seniors, who often face special challenges and vulnerabilities. He enjoys forming relationships with his clients, hearing their personal stories, and tailoring advice to their individual needs. When disputes arise among beneficiaries, Edgar encourages clients and their families to find common ground. But when necessary, Edgar’s not afraid to zealously represent his clients in court. Playa Orthodontics
310.216.0101 | playaorthodontics.com
When Courtney Ray was 13 years old, she found the process of getting braces on her teeth very interesting and took mental notes. Little did she really know, this would be her calling. In high school and college, she realized she wanted to be in the health profession. She shadowed various doctors and found she was too sensitive to be around all the sickness. She wanted to do something that was dealing with health and improving the quality of life; she wanted to make an impact on people’s lives in a positive way. Orthodontics is the perfect fit and incorporates everything she enjoys: health, wellness, science, art, people, kids, and fun. It’s seeing transformation before your eyes and improving people’s lives through their appearance and self-confidence. She is so passionate about her profession and absolutely loves what she does!
Dr. Courtney has been practicing for 10 years and purchased her own practice in 2016, formerly known as Playa Vista Orthodontics and now just Playa Orthodontics. Her clients are about 50% kids and 50% adults, ranging in age from 7-82 years old! She gets to know her patients and really cares about them. She takes time to process and customize what specific treatment plan would work best for their situation, whether it be the metal braces or Invisalign. What makes Playa Orthodontics special is the personalization and care for every single patient, and the office is super professional in every way.
Currently, their office is on the corner of Sepulveda and Manchester. And “brace yourself”…she is in the process of expanding to a second office in Redondo Beach early in 2023. Playa Orthodontics is involved in many community events, and would like to do even more, especially with kids.
“Nothing you wear is more important than your smile” (Connie Stevens). So, if you want a beautiful smile with straight teeth and bite, let Dr. Courtney and her office make you smile.
Helen’s Room 310.524.9429 | www.helensroom.com
The “C” word, Cancer. We all have either experienced it or know someone who has. When Monica Kahn’s close friend Helen passed away from cancer, Monica decided to volunteer with cancer patients. She noticed women who had been through chemo wearing shower caps on their heads instead of nice wigs or head coverings, and women who had mastectomies, filling bras with birdseed instead of having prosthetics. She saw a real need to help and started Helen’s Room, named in honor of her friend.
Her current location on Sepulveda is a safe, sacred, and magical place. There is a positive, uplifting feel right when you walk in the door. There are beautiful, donated pieces of furniture, gorgeous wigs, colorful scarves and hats on the wall, a room full of bras and prosthetics, and the caring, positive energy that Monica exudes. Having head coverings or prosthetics gives these women some more self-confidence, hope, and strength to get through this extremely difficult time. Helen’s Room provides all their products and services for FREE, without having to show financial need. They not only provide physical support, but emotional as well. Many women have to go through cancer alone, but at Helen’s Room, they don’t have to.
Monica says she’s very fortunate to be able to connect and help these women feel better in a horrible situation. She has touched thousands of lives over the years. Monica learns courage, generosity, humor, and inspiration from the women who come see her. One former client has donated thousands of dollars over the past 10 years and says, “I’ll never forget how I felt when I came to you.” As a free service to cancer patients, they welcome any donations to help cover costs.
If you or someone you know needs Monica’s services, please make an appointment by phone: 310.524.9429, or email: mkahnhelensroom@aol.com. Helen’s Room is located at 9100 South Sepulveda Blvd., Ste. 216, Los Angeles, CA 90045.
Hopefully, you nor anyone you know will ever need Monica’s services, but if you do, Helen’s Room is there to help.

If you work with Zacha Homes to buy your next home, not only will you be getting someone who will find the perfect house for you, but Robin Zacha is honest and will tell it like it is. She will be there for you even years after you buy your home. You are getting an experienced realtor, and someone you can always call, count on and trust.
Robin’s love of real estate began when she worked as a property manager, in addition to handling the marketing for the Real Estate section of the Argonaut. She left the Los Angeles area for a year to join the U.S. Army Reserves as a nuclear biochemist working in chemical warfare!

real estate
When Robin returned to our community, not only did she go back into the real estate business, but she also started the newspaper Hometown News. Juggling a real estate business AND Hometown News was very time consuming, so she decided to sell the paper and focus on real estate. She realized real estate is where she should be (although her husband always knew that.)
She has sold houses in our area for close to $6 million. Zacha Homes also builds and renovates houses to sell. Robin says she’s a workaholic and control freak, who will get the job done and done right. For Robin, it’s not about the money, but about helping people. She gets to know her clients personally and finds out what they are going through emotionally. It makes a difference about WHY someone is buying or selling. For instance, if it’s an elderly person who is now living alone after the loss of a loved one, Robin will make sure they find a home they feel secure in and maybe with neighbors they know.
People call her years after buying a house to get help with something they need. She really cares for the people she works with. Her clients and this community are like family. With Zacha Homes, you will have all your real estate needs covered, not just for the transaction, but for life.

Lily Love Boutique 323.373.5490 | www.lilyloveboutique.com
Sara was always interested in fashion, from sketching dresses when she was young to working in retail in high school and then finding a love for global fashion while living in South Korea and Italy. When she moved back to L.A. after living abroad and attending fashion school in Italy, she began working for television shows and commercials as a wardrobe stylist, and for Stitch Fix, finding the right clothes for people.
She started a side gig as an influencer and received many compliments on her style. Her mom’s passing in 2018 was difficult and she wanted to do something new and to make her mom proud. After starting a company with a partner, who got cold feet at the last minute and backed out, Sara almost gave up, but didn’t! Starting a business during the pandemic was not an easy task, but Lily Love Boutique was formed. Her mother’s name was Susanne, which translated from Farsi to English is Lily, so she named her business Lily Love Boutique to honor her mother.
Lily Love sells unique clothes and accessories at reasonable prices; it is things you can’t find in a “mall” store. Sara buys what she likes, mainly women’s clothing, jewelry, hats, and bags. The style is considered boho contemporary/beachy. It’s more casual clothing that looks good, but not like you are trying too hard!
If you don’t know how to put clothes together or what to wear, at Lily Love, you can even get personal styling! Sara gets so much joy when she has people step out of their comfort zone by trying new things and seeing that they can actually wear clothes and accessories that they did not think they could.
Located in the Playa del Rey Center, next to Good Pizza, she mainly wants everyone to know…”I’m here!”

AeroCharter USA 424.227.7395 | www.aerocharter.com.mx
AeroCharter USA is the first minority owned business in the U.S. to start an Aviation Premium Ground Handling Company at LAX back in April 2021 and just began their U.S. operations in August of 2022.
Victor Walker’s father worked for a company that built airplanes, but when he was younger, Victor wanted to be a basketball player or anesthesiologist. While in college, a friend got him a job fueling airplanes, and Victor fell in love with the business. He said if you stay in aviation for a year, you will never leave. One night in 2021, he and his friend Luis Ramos, whose family was in the aviation Cargo Handling business headquartered in Mexico City, discussed the idea of partnering. Over scotch and cigars, they decided to try something groundbreaking together. Piggybacking off the Ramos’ family’s business AeroCharter in Mexico City, they decided to launch the company’s first United States location.
Already the best “one stop shop” for the air cargo industry operating in 28 airports throughout Mexico, AeroCharter USA now provides services including premium ground handling services and into-plane fueling. What’s unique and special about AeroCharter is that not only are you hiring a minority owned company, but they do their part to make sure it is the smallest carbon footprint by using electric and alternative fuel with zero or low emissions. They use the finest equipment, which isn’t cheap, but green and very earth friendly.
Victor, Luis, and their team have put in a lot of planning and work over the past year, self-funding their new company. They have been fueling airlines every other day and are talking with cargo airlines about obtaining contracts for ground handling and transporting cargo.
They may be a new company in the U.S., but AeroCharter has more than 45 years’ experience in the national and international airline industry. They are determined and will get the job done with their quality equipment and experienced staff. In addition to everything else they do, AeroCharter USA hopes to transport sports teams to Los Angeles and to also become the #1 ground handler at LAX.
